NEW TO BLOGGING??

Just a quick post this time. Some of my new found friends have welcomed me to blogging and while I appreciate their welcome, I have been blogging for nearly 5 years. I have a blog for family and friends which you wouldn’t know about, but here on foxnews.com I began back during the war and its buildup in 2003. I also blogged for the California recall that brought us Governor Arnold. Other stories I blogged on were from Venezuela; on Barry Bonds; big Katrina and Hurricane Rita; the tsunami; and the missile launch onboard the USS Lake Erie.   You can read some others here in the reporter’s notebook archive.

I am new to have my own daily spot and I owe a thanks to Taryn back in NY. By the way…of all the blogs, the one most popular was the min by min account of Tookie Williams. I believe it got something like 350,000 hits over a 24 hour period. I can always re-post it if anyone is interested. Thanks again for all of the welcomes and support.

Adam,
One of the comments you made about the availabilty of things on F & F, I truly agree. I raise my sons to be around all kinds of things with respect. I wish I could remember what the topic was, but you were very correct. I liked the way you put it, and if I actually disagreed with Paige on it.

The only disadvantage to blogging is it can be addictive- I see myself walking over to the computer when I get done doing what I have to do and spending too much time blogging- so I have to remind myself- to step away-

Your blogging sounds interesting- some of us bloggers get caught up on name calling-

Well- now I will be watching you on the tele-

Is your degree in Journalism?

Comment by Michael

Were these Fox News blogs, or independent blogs you created?

350,000 hits??? wow.. I thought 300 on Greta’s was a lot. Thanks for posting the archives.. I was looking for one of those articles.

So, when you were in Venezuela… did you hear people talking about Natalee Holloway?

Comment by Adam Housley

Michael, my blogs were for foxnews.com and also a small one for my family that was a private blog. Also to answer Susan, my degrees are in Political Science (emphasis in International Relations) and also in Journalism.

Adam - This morning I was driving to work, listening to talk radio as usual, when a commercial came on for CITGO. I doubt this is something new, but it is the first time I have heard it or maybe the first time I paid attention to the ad. They were essentially bragging about their use of Venezuela oil. What do you make of that? I would hardly consider our relations with Venezuela as friendly, so why would an oil company want to push that angle?

Kitty- I heard a number thrown around that for the infatructure alone it would be 20 million dollars. I think at this time it’s all just estimates as they continue to investigate the cause and set a course for action.

Carolyn and everyone else…..Yep….I know Greta and now I owe her big!

What up Adam?? Greta sent me. Now how can you get her back?? Regards.

Comment by Michael

You may not even find this interesting, but I did so here ya go.

After viewing some of the other Fox blogs, I started to think about what makes a good blog. So, what did I do? Of course, I googled and I came up with thousands upon thousands of results. Greta either did her homework, or she innately knows how to attract an audience and even better how to build a loyal following.

Volumes have been written about content and targeting audiences, but primarily a blog needs fresh content on a daily basis even if it is just a brief description of the blogger’s day. There has to be some type of activity everyday!

Then you want to generate comments, because that begins to build a sense of community and it can maintain the blog when intriguing stories are hard to come by. Interactivity between the blogger and his following will go a long way in generating comments and sustaining a conversation. The following is taken from a webzine produced by the Digital Journalism class at New York University:

Reader comments are a significant factor in blog popularity, according to several bloggers. Hart Brachen, creator of the snarky, ironic blog The Soxaholix says, “People who leave comments build the community aspect that really helps a site become more than just one blogger writing into space. Comments let you know what’s working and what’s not, and inspire you to keep at it.”

Daniel Kasman, a writer for the popular film discussion blog MilkPlus, agrees. Posted comments will keep a blog “fresh and full of discourse,” he says.

Lockhart Steele, the managing editor of blog publisher Gawker Media, says that after a blog develops an audience, readers will submit tips and fact-check stories. They basically “do all of the work for you.”

Dedicated readers also keep a blog’s integrity in check. “Repeat visitors feel an ownership and loyalty to the blog,” observes Fanblogs’ Donahue. “They will police comments, pointing out when someone is out of line.”

But before a blog is able to rely on its readers to help it succeed, a blogger must sometimes wait months, or even years, before a regular following develops. While some bloggers believe that they’re going to attract regular commenters within days of launching their blogs, Holiday of Fanblogs says, “it doesn’t happen like that.”

Modifying a quote from the movie “Field of Dreams,” he says: “If you build it, they will come … slowly.”

In your case, you probably already have a following due to your television appearances and today you got an enormous leg up from a friend! So, don’t let us down and write something that will give us all pause to think and respond.

Comment by Ernee

I know someone who works for an oil company (not CITGO) and he said the U S gets most of it’s oil from Venezuela.

That may be the reason the nut down there pushes our buttons. We are dependent on him.

What up Adam?? Guess who sent me? Now how are you going to get her back??

Comment by Cecelia

Hi Adam! Greta sent me, too!
Good luck with your blog. I’m sort of new to blogging myself.
For the person who told about hearing the Citgo ad on the radio, the reason that they brag about Venzuelan oil is that the company is owned by Venzuelan government. I have heard that they have an offshoot with a different name, which would confuse those of us who don’t want to purchase oil from such places as Venzuela.

I just saw a Citgo ad on Fox News! I had responded to the post about hearing the Citgo ad on the radio, but I don’t see my post. Maybe it will come through later. Since I wrote that, I was surprised to see the tv ad, and just wanted to comment.

Hi Adam,

I too came over from Greta’s blog to just say hello. I didn’t know you had been blogging so long and I will be back often to check up on you.

That sure is a lot of hits in such a short period of time. I’d love to have a look at it myself if others are interested.

You and Greta and your gadgets. I just learned to text message after having a cell phone since 1999. I am behind time. I do love gadgets and the ones that really interest me I finally learn but I’m no ace like you too.

Greta is a great person and she loves to joke around. That’s why she sent all of us here today. I hope you have a great day. Enjoyed reading your blog today.

I ‘d like to wish u best of luck with it! It will be a blast, I ‘m sure!
I happen to be a reg FNC viewer & i have to say in all honesty: Fox has the best
talent (like yourself) anywhere!
Love the ladies, but the guys are top notch! Very professional, well kept hotties, always prepared,
funny,, charming… I can go on!!!!
Best of all, most of the correspondents like you do not make it obvious if you are
Left, Right or center Politically, and I so appreciate that.

I will be stopping by now & then to check you out..
And keep up the great work , it is much appreciated!

Your blog will give us a chance to know your personality in addition to your professional expertise. It sounds like all of you at FOX really enjoy working together. It makes it so much fun to watch.

Adam, greta sent me here, good luck with your blog. You’re going to have fun hearing from all of us in the country. We seem to be highly opinionated which is what makes a good blog, I think. Welcome

Btw Adam - I think Fox sent Greta to blog school for two weeks to learn how to answer individual comments. Might want to take a look at her notes. :D

Adam wake up!

We in Greta’s time zone have been blogging away while you’r probably still sleeping.

Get with the program! Oh, it’s ok - still too early to buy a new gadget.

Good morning!

Comment by Patty

tap, tap tap…wake up Adam!

Comment by Adam Housley

I have been asked to give the lowdown on Deb, Greta’s makeup artist. In two words….she rocks. She is very nice and always cinsiderate and of course she deals with Greta’s gadget addiction with ease. Seriously, Deb is one of my favorites and I always look forward to getting together with Deb and her boss when they come through town.

AND YES…..I AM NOW AWAKE!!

Comment by Patty

g’mornin!

So maybe you and Debi need to gang up on Greta and add a view videos of your own to “get even”!!! Surely you can convince Debi The Makeup Artist to sneak around a few corners when Greta isn’t looking!! *L*
