Fire in Carbon Canyon
by Adam Housley
This is morning video shot with my hand held camera from our live location down inside Carbon Canyon in Malibu.
Firefighters continue to extinguish hot spots and flames are sporadically igniting along the hillsides around these homes. Back in the fire of 1993, more than 120 homes were lost in this area, this time it appears only one has been lost, but the Santa Ana winds are starting to pick up.

I hope after this is all over with- like soon- Governor Arnold holds a big reception to honor all of these firefighters!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow… even the smallest bit of smoldering flames need to be put out so it doesn’t turn into something bigger. This has to be overwhelming to the firefighters.
Any reports on containment yet?
Those firefighters are TOTAL heroes..please tell them I said so.
Karen T. Last update I heard was that there was 10% containment.
Watched your coverage this morning. Awesome reporting!!! Those firefighters are amazing, risking their lives like that. I can’t imagine doing that job. I worry about their health tho’, not wearing some type of breathing apparatus. Your still pictures are breathtaking. Are you using your new camera? And Jeanne, you’re nuts if you think fires are a blessing!!!!
Great job covering the story live on Fox News and still keeping us informed in the blog world today!
Greta has also been wonderful with the coverage of her trip with Laura Bush. These kind of things really bring these blogs to life. I love it!
I expected it to be higher than 10% by now! Thanks Wendy
Adam,
Don’t they cut the brush down around houses? At the farm we mow down grasses, weeds and what have you to keep any fires from the highway.
Hi Karen. The problem is that some of the wind gusts are almost 90 mph, so it is incredibly hard to get a grip on the fire and the fixed wing water aircraft are not useful in high winds. It’s absolutely awful.
There is 0% containment on the San Diego fire – and that fire was evidently deliberately started.
I can’t believe this is happening.. it’s so surreal.
The firechief of San Diego has just stated that she has more homes and buildings on fire then she has personel and equipment to fight them. She expects a lot of people to become homeless before it’s all over.
This is becoming very serious very fast.
wow that looked lile it was bad!
wow…so much is happening. it looked bad.
I just saw the live stream on the Fox News web site… the report says 250,000 people have been evacuated. I just can’t comprehend that many people leaving at one time.
Adam.. you guys aren’t MIA are you?
No levity to be found here-
I left the word “needs” out for Gov. Arnold- he needs to hold a big ….
Yes Adam- if you can get close to a firefighter, they need to be embraced and commended for doing this job-
Who said fires are a blessing? I am trying to understand the logic?
Maybe when camping or a fireplace- and even at that- you have to make sure you put these out-
Adam, we appreciate getting such an up-close look. It is beyond sad. Be safe out there.
John, I heard that too. I’m also listening to KFI Radio, and a guy from their sister Radio STation in San Diego, said that the fire is SO bad, it may burn all the way to the beach – it is terrifying –
John… they 500+ firefighters yesterday and that wasn’t enough… now San Diego is on fire.
Wendy… deliberately??? You’ve got to be kidding
Karen T-
It is the flying embers which are scary- one of those little guys can start a whole new event-
Earlier when asked to Adam about the start of the fire- Adam believed it was because of the power lines being down-
Is there now evidence an arsonist started this?
Are there any celebrities or democrates wanting to recall the fireman because the fire is to costly?
Is there any difference between the California residents & the brave fireman & the Irag residents & the brave soldiers?
You do not have to answer these ?’s just seems like a simular situation.
Susan… I see what you’re saying
Karen T. Yes, arson investigators are looking into what they call “points of origin” for the fire in San Diego. Apparently, there are 3 places where it looks like the fire was deliberately started. Just unbelievable.
I can send you some good pumps to pump water into that area. Looks bad stay safe.
Wendy…since you no doubt know Calif area better than I do.
Are these fires close to Vista, east of Oceanside?
Ive tried to track it on the maps, i haven’t figured out if it had crossed west of the Hwy 15.
Just curious, I have family there. Thanks.
Susan, Phx. The Malibu fire is believed to have been started by downed power lines — it is the San Diego fire that is believed to have been started deliberately.
Adam my sister also lives in california on Highway 79 Warner Springs and i cant get in touch with her so is that near the fires also???????
Fox News just sent one of the automated emails to me and it was telling everyone to go to Adam’s blog to see the latest videos and photos… I thought that was wild!
Adam.. sorry… you guys must be busy, I should have realized that
Wendy…you’re right… that’s unbelievable, frightening… so many lives have been turned upside down and it’s just not stopping
Patty. I’m not familiar with Vista, however, here is the link to the Vista Fire Department….you could call them and ask what the local situation is…. http://www.ci.vista.ca.us/fire/contacts.htm
Cathy Mass….just call the Warner Springs Fire Department….they will be able to tell you immediately what the situation is.
here is the latest updated map on the fire locations if you have family in California

There are many fires burning in Southern California right now. One that is tragic for the families involved is the Grass Valley Fire near Lake Arrowhead. The fire has gone right through a residential community and the toll in homes will be in the hundreds. Early today it looked like that fire was 70% contained but, as winds picked up, it went out of control. Most of the assests that could have been put against that fire were committed elsewhere and the firefighters are just overwhelmed.
God bless our brave firefighters!
Bill K. I coudn’t agree with you more about the firefighters. My father and uncle are retired Firefighers.
My brother-in Law and one of his sons are LA City Firefighters. Those men and women do earn their pay.
I am having a hard time getting accurate data on the current fires – slow updates on official channels. Any blogs to suggest?
Very devastating. Keep up the great journalism and Be Safe!
Indeed David- this is very devastating- and depressing-
I can’t even imagine the panic these people are feeling at this moment- panic now and then the sadness-
These arsonists- this is unbelievable- I don’t even want to write what I think- this site has been respectful. Less than human freaks-
I agree wth Susan. Arsonists are horrible. Why do they do it? Hard to imagine what is in those peoples minds, if they even have a mind. What I am thinking about them is not fit to print because like Susan I want to be respectful.
Thank you for the info Wendy!
I know JoAnn-
I don’t edit my mouth when I get started- Even Adam would flush and I am sure he has heard everything- (playing ball)
Is there a site up somewhere with a map of effected areas? Not sure if famiy is being effected but can not reach.
Please, keep a vigilant eye out for unusual actions by normal appearing people. We have fire bugs among us that for some reason, get excited and start fires. Sickening!!
Thanks to all our firemen and women. Sure, they sit around alot, get paid great wages, and we often wonder why they are so revered. Well, now you can see why.
And to those who toss their cigarettes out the car window, anywhere, you are criminals. The next clown I see do that, you can bet he/she will get a ton of angry me.
watching from wisconsin and growing up
in southern california, my heart breaks
for all and praise to the heros.
Hey thats me on the hose sprayin around that abandoned house. Just got home today from being out for a little over a week. After the canyon fire me and my strike team were sent lake arrow head and thats where I’m coming from. That fire seems to be almost done though so good news to locals of that area. And as a fire fighter I’d like to thank all the folks that help us out by supporting us. Much appreciated
That’s my cousin! Hopefully this will all end soon and everyone makes it out safe. God bless all the firefighters, we’re very grateful! Keep up the great work Glen
I’d prefer reading in my native language, because my knowledge of your languange is no so well. But it was interesting! Look for some my links:
