Luck in a Fire?
At this writing, we are grabbing some much needed rest down the mountain. So many people are here in the San Bernardino/Riverside area. Thousands of evacuees fill all hotel and motel rooms and so many people have opened their homes to others. Also, many of you have asked about updates. I am hoping to get some better information on areas around the ‘Slide Fire’ by 8am PST tomorrow morning. I will post any information once I get it. We’ll be live on the hill in the 7am EST hour Friday.
A quick story, before I get some sleep. As many of you have read, we found one neighborhood mostly destroyed. A friend of this blog whom I have never met asked me to see about their street and we found devastation. Photographer Keith, whose picture you can see on this blog with his camera as a home burns down, was asked via e-mail to check a friends place. We had a 30 minute break and he jumped in the SUV and ran a couple of miles away.
Oddly, when he arrived at the address, his friends home had survived and it stood next door to the home he captured on video burning down on Wednesday. We had no idea. Fire destroyed three homes in that area of Rim of the World Road. Embers had caught some roofs on fire, but amazing work by firefighters kept the flames from spreading to other homes in the neighborhood.

Everyone has been pumped by adrenalin-
I can’t imagine how exhausted everyone is going to really feel by the time this slows- It is going be like a “crash”-
Great story. Do you think that you guys will be forever changed? It has been tough to be a few miles from the devastation, hard to imagine being in it. Great coverage. Thank you. Love that little angel picture…..sure says a lot!
Thanks, Adam, for your fine coverage during this terrible disaster.
Say what do you say so?
Who has the most asinine remark about these fires?
Jamie Lee Curtis or George Carlin?
Adam,
Rest up, I have been amazed how this blog has helped you with stories, and so many with information. When I first came here it was a great place to goof off, now I look for insight and interest. I have heard from one friend but not the other, I am hoping she just slept and is okay.
Adam, where are you this morning? No report, except on little segment.
Raise any concerns for you?
I, like many others here, cannot be near a TV during the day and, again like many others here, I just want to thank you and your crew for giving us these updates through the blog. Great job, Adam.
I don’t know how much time you spent in the majors, ( my nephew does not have your baseball card and he’s got a ton of them ), but you are definitely a major league reporter.
Good reporting. But nobody is reporting about Ramona, the first town hit by the Witch fire on Sunday. That town has run out of water. Evacuees may not be allowed back before November 8. I hear the National Guard is occupying the town.
Adam, I have chosen to communicate with you for two reasons.
1. You broke the story about the arsonist.
2. When you shut that congressman up when you were reporting from the Peruvian Earthquake, that was the most honest and true piece of reporting we have ever seen. Even better than Shep from Katrina.
Now, having seen that you are hopefully getting my messages, I have something bugging me about the firefighters you posted the video about a couple of days ago.
I notice, the structure has already burnt. The firefighters are standing there looking at it.
My question is, since that structure was already gone, why weren’t they on to save the next structure that hadn’t burned yet?
Were they tired, and taking a break? They didn’t seem very concerned to move on.
With the bizarre random but somehow not so random burning of houses, I’m tempted to believe that maybe some of the firefighters are in on the theory that I have been discussing and sure that you are aware of in my ATS thread entitled “Man caught setting fire in SoCal”
Also, did you show the Silverwood Country Store in one of your reports? I think you did, but can’t be sure, cause I don’t know what is looks like.
Very important, cause when I called their number, because they are connected to arsonist John Rund, a lady answered the phone, and it sounded like the entire town was there in the background.
Sorta the way a command center would sound, had they had that phone number routed to them, in case someone made the connection, know what I mean.
Keep up the excellent work. I know you hands are tied to a certain degree, but I can tell you are trying. Our country relies on you being able to expose the truth.
Otherwise, once again they will be able to pull the wool over our eyes.
“Biblical pun intended”
I will repeat what others have already said! You have done a fantastic job covering this horrible story, both with updates throughout the day on FNC and especially on this blog. It is very much appreciated!
On Greta’s blog I made a comment that the two of you have really gone all out with the blogging effort while some of the other Fox blogs seem to be limited by a clock. Again, I am not criticizing those bloggers, because some of them are a great deal of fun. However, to get the complete story along with constant interaction with readers you two are the ones to read.
Housley and Greta are heads above any others and that goes beyond Fox!!!!!!
Firefighters never get the respect they deserve for the risks they take to rescue people, property and nature!!!!!! I think the answer to the question Susan asked “Who has the most asinine remark about these fires?” must be Steve Svensson who has to ask if the firefighters are tired or taking a break in the video Adam posted. Of course they are tired and no they are not taking a break at least not the type of break that they need and deserve! They’ve been risking their own lives to battle these fires in incredible heat and with almost no sleep. They’ve gone from structure to structure and fire to fire putting their own lives at risk and on hold. In fact FOX had one photo of firefighters sifting through the ashes of a home that belonged to one of their own. Instead of asking Svensson’s question “why weren’t they on to save the next structure that hadn’t burned yet?” the question that should be asked is “what can we do to show our support for all that they do and have done?”
That’s really cool that both Keith and you are following up on requests and that’s great news that his friend’s home was able to be saved. This is just unbelievable.
Correction to my former blog. Ramona has just started letting evacuees in to check their homes and neighborhoods. However the town water system was damaged and those not on well systems are asked not to use water for any purpose until further notice. Thanks again for the outstanding coverage and for providing this forum.
