Chocolate Beer?
I found this one online this morning and couldn’t help but post it! You guys have to love this one.
Chemical residues found in pottery in the area of Central America that is now Honduras have revealed that the ancient peoples were drinking alcoholic chocolate beverages as long ago as 1150BC, probably to celebrate occasions such as births and weddings. The evidence suggests that they were alcoholic drinks made from fermented pulp of cacao fruit. The findings, from a team led by John Henderson, Professor of Anthropology at Cornell University in New York State, push back the origins of chocolate consumption by at least half a millennium. The earliest previous evidence was dated at about 600BC. Professor Henderson said it was likely that the distinctive taste of chocolate was stumbled upon by ancient brewers fermenting cacao pulp to make a kind of beer known later to the Spanish as chicha.
Chocolate was important to the Mayan and Aztec civilisations, and was even used as a form of currency. The Maya had a god of chocolate.
HISTORY NOTE:
At the time of the Spanish Conquest in the 16th century, chocolate paste was mixed with ingredients such as water, maize, chilli and honey to create a variety of drinks, most of them extremely bitter. The idea of mixing it with sugar emerged in Spain in the 17th century, and chocolate in its solid form did not materialise until the 19th century.

Sounds good to me!! Any chocolate wines in your family’s future?
Adam, under “Thank You” I posted this comment. News Alert: Greta may be getting a beer label with her name on it. Maybe it will be chocolate. I can only hope so. I love chocolate. Maybe Greta is playing catch up. What do you think? Newt has something to do with it. This is so much fun.
I’m convinced God made chocolate for us humans to enjoy, and that’s why it’s very important to have at least one large bar of Cadbury’s Fruit & Nut chocolate in the house at all times! Doesn’t chocolate go better with wine than beer?!?
Adam, please tell us more about your family’s vineyard — I really enjoyed the video you posted.
Adam, go on Greta’s blog and read and listen to Newt. This is not a tall tale. Some time back Greta posted a picture of her drinking a beer from a bottle in a hotel room. I think there may be something to this beer deal. Check it out.
So the speculation is that 3157 years ago the ancient peoples drank their chocolate brew to celebrate births and weddings…………..Or, did they drink because they were married and had kids?
GretaBrew just doesn’t have that appetizing ring to it……kind of like Bar Mat Shooter, it just doesn’t work for me.
I knew chocolate played a big historical role- but chocolate beer? Did they have chocolate lite beer?
Newt is the one who came up for the idea of having the Greta beer- She had posted a video where Newt kidded her-
I don’t get the feeling she drinks beer either- or anything-
Chocolate has magnesium in it-
Hi John-
Yumm Yumm! Favorite Story of the day! I personally love cheese and fruit with Wine, followed by chocolate and coffee. That is my favorite type of party!
Yep Greta drank a beer somewhere in her travels.
chocolate covered strawberries are good too- My neighbor makes them all the time-
Question here- Does Adam drink beer?
I like coming over here- Adam posts some cool stuff- kind of gets me thinking on other subjects than dead bodies-
What about the spillage Adam? Are you going to have anything to write about it?
Kathy….that sounds good. I’m much simpler date than that though. A half gallon of Boonesfarm Raspberry Wine and a plate of Tater Tots will always please my palate. If not that, then a 12 pack of Bud and a couple of bags of Cheez-Doodles will always put a smile on my face.
And Hi Susan.
chicha- interesting- this is my word for the day-
Chicha is a Spanish word for any variety of fermented beverage. It can be made of maize, manioc root (also called yuca or cassava), or fruits, and other things. During the Inca Empire women were taught the techniques of brewing chicha in Acllahuasis (feminine schools). It is traditionally prepared from a specific kind of yellow maize (jora) and is usually referred to as chicha de jora. It has a pale straw color, a slightly milky appearance, and a slightly sour aftertaste, reminiscent of hard apple cider. It is drunk either young and sweet or mature and strong. It contains a slight amount of alcohol, 1-3%.
While chicha is most commonly associated with maize, the word is used in the Andes for almost any homemade fermented drink, and many different grains or fruits are used to make “chicha” in different regions.
In Peru, chicha also means an informal and transient arrangement, or a street vendor. In Chile, chicha refers to a type of homemade sweet wine made by families for special occasions. In other Latin American countries like Panama, chicha can simply mean “fruit drink.”
In Venezuela, chicha is a non-alcoholic drink made with rice and milk. It has the consistency of eggnog, it is usually flavored with cinnamon and served over chopped ice. In Venezuela the alcoholic variety is called chicha andina.
In El Salvador, chicha usually refers to an alcoholic drink made with maize, panela and pineapple. It is used as a drink and also as a ingredient on many traditional dishes, such as “Gallo en Chicha”, a local version of Coq au vin. A non-alcoholic version usually named “Fresco de chicha” (chicha softdrink) is made with the same ingredients, but without allowing it to ferment.
John-

Boy did I get sick off of that 2,000 years ago-

MD 20/20 is where I draw the line. Any wine that’s displayed at your local Home Depot right next to the gasoline additives for your car engine can’t be good.
Vansustweiser…..I like it. It’s got a nice Wisconsin ring to it and sounds like something a Cheesehead would drink.
John and you and Hubby would make a great date! But then again you two are too much alike!
Thank goodness for Spain!
I’ll take my chocolate on the side please!
I love the “Vansustweiser”, how long do you think before she jumps on it? *L*
YOu guys are all way to quick today
Adam-
