Strictly Mexico?

This info comes from a great Arizona Republic article and I am confident you’ll see this story on Fox News today and tonight, so be looking. Listen to this…

All of Mexico’s 31 states, along with Mexico City, require foreigners to present a valid visa if they want a driver’s license, according to a survey of states. So, as the question of whether to give driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants ignited a national debate here in the United States, in Mexico, the largest source of U.S. immigrants, there’s no question: there, you must be a legal resident to get a driver’s license.

This is my favorite quote:
“When it comes to foreigners, we’re a little more strict here,” said Alejandro Ruíz, director of education at the Mexican Automobile Association.

Great article-

As you know I lived in Mexico City for many years. We (the family) got our status as immigrants. With this status we basically had the same rights as a citizen. My father made it a point as to ensure we were legally living there. This immigration status, which was a privilege has restrictions. If I were to leave Mexico and come back in reside here, in order to keep my immigration status, I would have to go back to Mexico once a year and have this passport checked by the Mexican government to acknowledge I was retaining this status. If I failed to do this once a year, my status was immediately revoked.

I think if you are going to live here, do what it takes to become legal. As you know, this state is at the top for carjacking and identity theft. My dear friend who works for the Department of Corrections had his car stolen- yes- off the parking lot at the Department of Corrections- and then he had his identity stolen from the information he had in his glove compartment.

His car was found three blocks away- everything missing out of it- He started getting calls about credit cards being taken out in his name- too make a long story short- he went through a painful ordeal to get this all settled- the idiot got a cell phone out and because of this, my friend was able to track where this thief lived- and yes- illegal-

If the states here in this country are going to be so generous to hand out driver’s licenses to illegals, why not make it easier- and hand them out bogus social security numbers and identifications too- Heck, just give them the driver’s license and forget about the insurance- and then they can go from state to state and get other driver’s licenses-

I love your favorite quote- being that in Mexico, all you have to do is pay a mordida when stopped by a cop- Since when did they get so strict about valid visas?

P.S. Nice to know foreigners have to show a valid visa to get a driver’s license-

Maybe they should focus on half the residents there which drive without a driver’s license- and Adam I know you have experienced driving in Mexico City- their motto- drive as you feel like it and if someone gets in your way, oh well- (mordida will cover the ticket)-

One has to be on drugs or insane to drive in that city-unless it has changed in the past few years?

Does Mexico issue it’s DL’s by each state or only on a federal level? I think part of the problem in the US is that we issue our DL’s per individual state. Each having their own and different requirements and statutes. I don’t know if the US should go to a federal driver’s license vs state issued or not, but it may be a better way to control who gets a license.

Yet, licensing offices in all of Mexico’s 31 states, along with the Federal District, where Mexico City is located, said they require applicants to prove their citizenship, preferably by showing a federal voter-registration card issued by the Federal Elections Institute.

John- sounds like it is by each state since each state has licensing offices-??? (Adam?)

Love your blog Adam- you keep me thinking and reading great stuff!!!! and John adds to the blog too-

You know when I have been to Mexico it is truly like another country, policio wear machine guns and that is on the tourist beaches. We are fortunate here, but I love my country enough to know what is legal and illegal. Anyone that thinks illegals aren’t driving here is just silly, my DH was hit by one with his car parked. They don’t see the need for a license.

Speaking of foreigners…….I was clearing out some files on my PC when I ran across this. It’s a radio communication between a JFK Air Traffic Controller and an Air China jet that’s just landed and is trying to taxi to the gate. This could only happen in New York……

I thought those of you travelling by air this holiday season may enjoy it…..then again, maybe not
Happy Landings

John- on The Big Story just talked about this article- how funny!

The Big Story said we ought to do what Mexico does- say no to the driver’s license if you are not legal-

Why would we say yes if you are not legal? Does that make any sense? The immigration issue is such a mess.

Not only is Mexico stricter on licenses, but also on who can have professional/government jobs. If you are not born there you can’t have these jobs. You also cannot own land unless you were born there. But we’re the racist country! Living in CA I have seen how the immigration will bankrupt this state.

Christine- as an immigrant there years ago- you could own land- I know this because my father and brothers owned property- trying to get Adam to take a vacation at the property-

However, this may have changed- so I could be wrong- but when I was there with my parents as immigrants, we owned property- including the homes we resided in-
