Tiger attack details emerge

In this day and age, it’s hard to imagine that there is public place, especially a zoo, that isn’t equipped with extra sets of eyeballs everywhere. I was really surprised to hear that there are no surveillance cameras at the San Francisco Zoo where the Christmas Day tiger attack left one teenager dead, and two of his friends badly mauled…. but that is the case.

The sun is not quite up, and I am typing this to you at the San Francisco Airport, heading back to New York. As you’ve probably been following with our Fox News blogs, Adam Housley remains on scene and will be continuing our coverage of the story.

As I was finishing up my final live report from the back gates of the zoo’s employee entrance, zoo officials came out to do a quick interview to tell the reporters that the necropsy of Tatiana the tiger was complete, and that she was found to be in good health, and had been shot 3 times. We had heard that the zoo would be re-opened today, but it will remain closed while the investigation into how this all happened continues.

There is new information coming out in the last 12 hours about how the three young men may have accidentally participated in the tiger attack. We reported yesterday that investigators are looking into the possibility that they taunted or teased the 350 pound Tatiana, which may have given her the extra motivation to lunge and make an incredible escape over a 20 foot moat, and 18 foot tall wall. As I was getting ready this morning in the hotel room near the airport, all the local stations were reporting on the possibility that one of the men dangled a leg over the wall, and that when Tatiana got out, she attacked them all right there, and that the two survivors ran to the Terrace Cafe, leaving behind a trail of blood, which is how she was able to hunt them down specifically (there were other people inside the zoo when this happened) and attack them again. There was also reportedly a shoe and blood found in the area between the gate where visitors stand, and the edge of the moat. Adding even more intrique into this theory, a foot print was also reportedly found on a metal fence, suggesting someone may have climbed it to get closer to the tigers, and if that happened, maybe the tiger was able to latch on to a leg or body part to get up and over the wall.

It’s hard to imagine that anyone, especially moms and dads would want to take their children back to a place right now where this happened (can you imagine the horror if the tiger broke free at a busier time when little kids were being pushed around in strollers with balloons and cotton candy???) but sure enough, yesterday, there were parents holding onto their tots asking if the zoo had re-opened wanting to go in. The San Francisco Zoo has never had a problem like this, and is an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the organization even says the SF Zoo goes beyond local, state, and federal requirements.

There will be a news conference today from San Francisco General Hospital to bring us up to date on the two surviving victims, friends of the 17 year old that was killed, who are brothers. Doctors say they have made a miraculous recovery because they were young and in good health and that the medical staff was able to clean their wounds quickly to clear out any bacteria from the bites and claw digs. If you’ve ever been scratched by a house cat, and your skin swells with a red mark from the “kitty venom” you can only imagine what these guys had going on.

With that, I’m off to New York. I’m trying to download some pictures for you from my family’s cattle ranch here at the airport, but it’s not working (argh!) So, I’ll do that tomorrow. I can’t wait to show you how cool it is out there in Elk Grove, and what real cowboy’n is all about (not me, my cousin Tim and my Uncle John). Really amazing story and great pictures to share. Giddy Up!

Laura,

This story is disturbing in so many ways…the zoo should remain closed, at least for awhile…I know I would not feel comfortable going there until the investigation is complete with some answers to how and why this happened…this is so tragic…

Adam has done a great job covering this…and you also,,

thanks debbie in tennessee

Thanks for the update! You have made this story a little more clear with your descriptive words. Teenagers can be very foolish and it is sad that a prank may have cost a life. It is also sad that the tiger could not have been subdued in a more humane way, but it appears that timing was critical.

That 350 pound tiger must have been moving like greased lightening when it leapt over that moat! Something just doesn’t sound right about all of that….

Laura, do you know why the Tiger was shot and killed rather than tranquilized? I “assume” that there were Zoo employees on-site who would have had access to tranquilizer guns. I would be interested in a follow-up to that.

From what I read, the police did not have the time to wait for someone to come around with a tranquilizer dart. The tiger was about to devour another victim when the police arrived. They yelled at the tiger and it started coming toward them. If that is correct, then there were not many options available at that point.

Re: Comment by Celia : “Laura, do you know why the Tiger was shot and killed rather than tranquilized?”

Celia, you have got to be kidding. I hold a carry-concealed pistol, and I have to tell you, if I saw a tiger mauling a human I wouldn’t hesitate to empty it in the beast.

What kind of fairy tale would make you believe that there was any time at all to consider a tranquilizer? The tiger was ACTIVELY MAULING an individual, to say nothing of the brave police who were there to dispatch the animal while being grossly undergunned. Each police officer within range was in grave danger… that animal could and obviously would kill a human in seconds, even when wounded.

Michael & Carl…..thank you so much for your responses to my question about why the tiger was shot and killed rather than tranquilized. At the time I asked that question (which was several hours before the posting timestamp), I did not know all of the circumstances and it was not smart of me to ask until I knew more information. My understanding at the time was that Zoo officials were near the tiger before the police arrived. So I wondered why the Zoo officials didn’t use a tranquilizer gun while waiting.

Another misconception I had at the time I asked the question was that there was no way the tiger could have jumped the wall and it was being reported that someone let the tiger out. Reports have since changed, including the wall being lower than it should have been, and the tiger likely did jump over the wall.

If the boys taunted the animal, they have to be accounted for the consequences of their acts, including the death of this very animal. Tigers are enlisted between endangered species and must be protected, not abused. And people are supposed to be rational enough not to expose oneself and others to situations like that. What will be the next stupid action of this kids, and to what tragedy will it lead?

You need a brain. Maybe you can be given the tiger’s at its necropsy. They were standing on the enclosure railing yelling at the the tiger ‘like normal kids’, as their mother put it. And at least one was drunk. And they had drive to Frisco under the influence of pot. And were on probation. And had pot with them. And a kit to defeat drug testing. And they wouldn’t talk to cops or paramedics.
Yeah. They didn’t do a thing.
