30 Days?
The director of the San Francisco Zoo, Manuel Mollinedo, gave an afternoon press conference as we await the police findings. Here are the highlights.-He says he’s “extremely satisfied with the way zoo staff responded and put their lives on the line.”
-He avoided criticism that two surviving victims were denied help in the frantic moments following the mauling.
-Mollinedo also said something happened to provoke the tiger. He wouldn’t elaborate and cited the ongoing investigation. “All I know is that something happened to provoke that tiger to leap out of her exhibit,” Mollinedo said.
-The zoo is scheduled to reopen Thursday.
-A new portable public alert system is being put in place that would notify visitors during emergencies. There was no PA system in place at the time of the attack and he doesn’t know why the old one was eliminated.
The latest reports claim that the zoo will have an entirely new security system for the tigers, including higher walls, within 30 days. Zoo officials we are told, are also looking at other enclosures and safety measures involving other animals and security camera’s will be installed. Still….information is beginning to leak out.More from the two men who survived and their lawyer Mark Geragos who claims the attacke went on for nearly 45 minutes without ANY witnesses, other than his clients.
We have yet to hear anything of note from the zoo in recent days, other than a quck defense, and all of us await any information from investigators who said just a couple of days ago that their investigation was close to concluding. Here’s the latest information from the case, I have compiled information from several articles, including from the Chronicle.
The two brothers who survived the Christmas Day tiger attack that killed their 17-year-old friend frantically sought to get help for more than 30 minutes before the zoo workers finally called 911, ”They were out there for 30 to 35 minutes and nobody takes them seriously - especially when there was blood. It’s incredible,” Geragos said. Sam Singer, a newly hired spokesman for the zoo, said Tuesday that it was “highly unusual that (Geragos) is the only person who has the facts, when the San Francisco Police Department hasn’t even completed its investigation.” ”Anything that a defense attorney says has to be taken with not a pinch of salt, but a ton of salt,” Singer said. Geragos said he was retained to represent the interests of the brothers, which may include litigation against the zoo.According to the brothers’ account, as related by Geragos, the tiger’s initial attack took place well before it was eventually reported to authorities. In the attack - at about 4:30 p.m. - the tiger first went for Kulbir Dhaliwal and then attacked Sousa, who had tried to distract the big cat, Geragos said. The brothers were unable to stop the attack, so they went looking for help. They decided to go back to the cafe, 300 yards away, where they had bought nachos earlier. But it was near closing time for the zoo, and the cafe already had locked its doors. Eventually, someone inside called 911 at 5:07 p.m., the first notice authorities outside had of any attack at the zoo. It is unclear exactly when the brothers first attempted to notify people in the cafe about the attack. After trying in vain to get inside the cafe for refuge, the brothers spotted a female security officer in a golf cart, but she appeared to be “diffident” in the face of their frantic efforts, Geragos said. The attorney said he wants to speak to that security officer as part of his own investigation. ”She was told about Carlos,” Geragos said. “They were trying to get help for him. ”The security guard did virtually nothing,” he added. “Here Kulbir is bleeding all over.”The attitude of the zoo is reflected in dispatch logs of the events of that night. The first call to fire officials gave no sense of urgency, even suggesting the whole thing might be the product of a deranged person’s imagination. Law enforcement authorities familiar with the incident say the vague nature of that first call meant that the incident was not given immediate priority. The early report on the police log casts doubt on the incident, suggesting that zoo authorities considered the information unreliable. ”Zoo personnel dispatch now say there are two males who the zoo thinks … are 800 (code for mentally disturbed) and making something up … but one is in fact bleeding from the back of the head,” according to a police log entry at 5:10 p.m.Geragos acknowledged the brothers were frantic and visibly shaken when they tried to report what happened. “They say they were acting crazy. … I don’t know how one is supposed to act after being attacked by a tiger,” Geragos said. By the time fire officials arrived at the scene at 5:12 p.m., they already knew a tiger was on the loose. Fire crews were told that zoo security had called a “Code One, meaning they can’t let anyone into the zoo,” according to the fire log. The medical crews were let in under police escort, and by 5:20 p.m. they found Sousa’s body, according to police dispatch logs. After reporting the incident at the cafe and to the guard, the brothers were attacked again by the tiger as they were waiting outside the cafe for someone to help. Geragos said it was about 45 minutes from the time the three young men were first attacked until help finally arrived. Geragos denied that the animal was taunted by anyone that day. “As far as I’m concerned, that’s an urban legend,” he said. “There was no taunting of the tiger.” Geragos said the three friends had come to the zoo to “hang out.”The brothers have no idea why the animal attacked. “They had just gotten something to eat,” the attorney said, but he declined to go into the actual details of the attack, saying he was still investigating them. The two brothers are distraught at the death of their friend, he said. ”These guys were close,” he said. “Paul is very shaken up.”Meanwhile, a new 4- to-5-foot-tall glass wall is the most likely addition to the tiger grotto, authorities say. The barrier would rise on the public side of the tiger grotto, adding to the 12 1/2-foot-tall moat wall and increasing the height of the barrier to 16 1/2 feet. It would be built of tempered, laminated glass, and a similar wall would also be installed in the lion exhibit. At present, there is no glass barrier between the tiger grotto and the public observation area. Visitors are protected only by the moat wall. In addition, surveillance cameras and electrical “hot” wires are being considered for the tiger grotto, zoo officials said. The barrier and other additions would be built within 30 days under emergency plans authorized by the city’s Recreation and Park Department, which oversees the zoo. The final design has not been approved and is subject to change. The zoo is scheduled to reopen to the public on Thursday, although the lions and tigers will not be on exhibit, either outdoors or in the Lion House. Zoo officials have not decided whether to go ahead with a media tour and inspection of the tiger grotto today.

If anyone wants to see some really good pictures of the layout of the Tiger enclosure follow the below link.
You will also be able to see how insignificat the 4 foot rot iron fence is, it is only a few feet away from the edge of the moat, I personally don’t think the 4 foot fence would make any difference in this attack.
Our Tiger enclosure here in Tulsa is pretty much just like this one except our moat is 17 feet deep.
The diagram will also show what improvements the Zoo is going to make to the enclosure.

Your blog is very quiet right now– so I went back and read your article– I got focused on the building, additons, and adjustments the zoo will be implementing– I would think this would be rather noisy– where are they going to house these animals? And no, I am not trying to be funny!
Jen—
Adam can’t stay out of zoos– the plaque would have been cool to have put in front of the second slide show— Adam names the animals…….
The creation museum I would have loved to have gone——- how fun would this have been—
Did anyone check out John Denner- he plays the guitar!!
Ahhh Adam and his beasts…I love it!!
grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
just doesn’t sound the same when i’m giggling!
Susan-
Your second slide show was awesome! So funny!!!
I was so frustrated last night when it wouldn’t go through and gave up on trying to send anything else.
I will rate and comment on it 5 Stars!
I just cracked up when we saw Adam at the museum and fortunately we had the camera with us. Yours wins though!
See you at Picture of the Day!
Just to answer someone’s earlier questions, yes, these two brothers have a criminal history. And have been known to be difficult with police in the past. And yes, I agree with someone else’s point, being intoxicated might have hampered their credibility when seeking assistance. And how long did it take for them to seek it since they know they had caused the trouble?????? Maybe only after they had no other option since the tiger was hunting them and only them.
See Jen S I knew you could do it you just needed some motivation.
John44 is my new HERO!!!!!!!! YIPPEE.
I still like you too Adam.
Who says a taunter can’t be a hero!!!!
Yep he was there; Susan I found him too…and I wasn’t even looking for him.

*****Adam — You can be mad at me, but only for a day okay.
OK—This is what I tried to post last night and this morning.
Wow Wow–busy day here. I missed some fun but have some more to share. We went to the Creation Museum today, perhaps you’ve heard of it ..new in Petersburg KY. It explains Young Earth Creationism–you know the earth is only 6,000 years old and dinosaurs were on Noah’s Ark. ?? I have a bit of a problem with all that, but that is for another time and blog I guess….
Anyway it all starts at the beginning and you know who is at the beginning, Adam of course!
Look what it says about him.

John44—-
You are right! I just need some taunting— I’ll try again and post it as two separate comments…maybe it won’t take two links from photo bucket in one comment box??
Wish me luck….
It shouldnt matter how much taunting or teasing is done. A TIGER SHOULD NEVER BE ABLE TO ESCAPE ITS ENCLOSURE!!!!! Thats the zoos fault! Now people are making a memorial at the zoo FOR THE TIGER?! Misguided idiots.
Jen S
you give up to easy think like a Tiger and you to can clear the wall to join the rest of us.
Adam— Bah Hum Bug….it still won’t go through.
I quit.
HERE IS WHAT I WAS TRYING TO POST LAST NIGHT..BEFORE MAINTENANCE KICKED ME OUT.

Hum, I think his name was Mike Morgan.. played at Valley High..
can’t remember what team he played for.
Adam (in response to an earlier comment)
my ex husband (high school sweetheart)
played professional baseball for the Dodgers minor leagues … he was drafted out of high school by the Reds, but decided on going to college instead … then, he was drafted out of UNR in the early 80’s. He played for the Dodgers about 5 years, until he threw out is rotator cuff while playing winter ball in Venezuela. He was quite crushed when he was let go. He sure loved that life and playing ball… he was a pitcher. Ball players sure have the life, that’s for sure!!!
Single A in Lodi, AA in San Antonio and AAA in Alburquerqe. It was great for HIM, it was hard on me b/c of the groupies. He roomed w/ Sid Fernandez in AA (I believe). There was another kid he used to play against while in HS here in LV .. I think his name was Mike Smith??? He was in the majors for a while. Anyway.. it was such a long time ago, I forget names ~ not so sure about the Smith part. They were rivals during HS.
JACK HANNAH DID A STORY AND COMMENTED ON THIS ISSUE AND IF HE SAID THERE WERE SLINGSHOTS PRESENT THEN THERE WERE SLINGSHOTS AT THE SCENE OR ON THE BOYS IT WOULD M,AKE SENSE TO ME THESE JERKS USING A SLINGSHOT THEY COULDN’T USE A GUN A SLINGSHOT DOESN’T MAKE NOISE AND YES I BELIEVE THEY WERE TAUNTING AND ABUSING THIS TIGER.
THERE WAS NO OTHERE REASON FOR THIS IGER TO COME OUT OF IT’S COMFORT ZONE UNLESS IT WAS TEASED AND ABUSED TO ANGER IT AND IT TOOK A WHILE TO DO THIS FROM 4PM TILL THE TIME IT HAPPENED AFTER 5PM THINK ABOUT IT THATS A NO BRAINER.
The friends of the victim has lied about everything else and refused to give their name , what makes anyone think they are not telling lies about the security guard I cannot see a security guard ignoring their job with a serious report such as this , these men or boys went to the zoo with something other then viewig the animals in mind. Vodka bottle, sling shots duhhhhhh how could anyone with any kind of sense at all think this was normal these guys were taunting this poor tiger and doing things that she didn’t deserve and unfortuntly one of the men lost their lives over stupidty , this is the outcome of meaness . This has been a safe zoo for everyone for over 40 years . Geragos is just an attorney with $$$$$ signs in his eyes and publicity , of course he is going to say these fine unstanding young men just went to the zoo out of love for animals NOT!!!! They were looking for something and I BET THEY HAD BEEN THERE IN THE RECENT PAST AND GOT TO DRINKING OR WHATEVER AND WAS LOOKING FOR SOMETHING TO GET INTO.. WHY WOULD THESE GUYS GO TO THE ZOO ON CHRISTMAS DAY IN THE AFTERNOON ???? WOULD YOU THINK THEY WOULD WANT TO BE WITH THEIR FAMILY ?? I THINK SO, AND I BET A BACKGROUND CHECK WILL SHOW THIS IS NOT THE 1ST TIME THEY HAVE BEEN INTO TROUBLE. THE TRUTH WILL COME OUT.
I don’t believe the slingshot story, I think someone made it up just like the board across the moat story turned out to be made up, and they were inside the moat story was made up etc. theres a whole lot of made up stories going around but I do believe this witness for some reason.
The NY Post stated that a city official with knowledge of the investigation told them about the slingshots and the vodka bottle. Maybe the slingshots were found hidden and law enforcement was keeping it to themselves until test results were known if they were linked to the suspects/victims.
I hope they find the 4th man.
There you go I had a feeling there were no slingshots, just maybe yelling etc. and now we are hearing from a witness with nothing to gain that Carlos the boy who died was not taunting, all he did was try to save his idiot friend.
Susan
Hey, what’s wrong with two Leo’s under the same roof?????
I think the zoo property is publicly owned, but the zoo’s operation is privately managed.
Joe Papa - I think you are correct with your dog analogy.
Is the SF Zoo a private zoo (privately owned) or is it publically owned? If it’s local, state or federally funded than any lawsuit against it would actually have to be paid by the taxpayers, right?
What is the very latest on this story?
I caught something about an eyewitness coming forward and there being serious doubts about any sling shots being used.
While I feel sorry for the family that lost their child, I can’t help but think the survivors and their families have jumped on the “get rich quick” band-wagon. They’re wanting to sue the Zoo for something these boys probably created. We’ve yet to learn all the facts, but if drinking was involved, you can’t help but wonder what 3 young, possibly drunk, boys can get in to. Or, in this case, what they can provoke.
NB…the witness must be Jennifer Miller. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/01/03/MN9TU8AGC.DTL
She claims there were 4 young men at that area and only 3 of them were taunting the cats especially the oldest one. Sousa was not and seemed embarrassed by their behavior. Miller’s family left because they were disturbed by the behavior…which started at 4pm.
So…who’s the 4th man? Too many outstanding warrants to stick around?
Whether the tiger was taunted or not, it was the zoo’s responsibility to ensure that it was impossible for it to escape its enclosure.
I have read no reports where there were any witnesses to these young men behaving inappropriately. The zoo appears to be doing damage control by shifting the blame to the victims instead of owning up to their responsibility.
Regardless, the liability falls on the zoo. If your dog escaped your back yard and mauled a neighbor’s child, guess who would be responsible?
ADAM—GRRRR
Three attempts to post last night. 10:30 est. It went to that place where you can find them….you helped me before with that, remember?
Hi y’all–I tried to communicate last night but….
You know I’m a regular on here I am good ….it’s nothing bad. See if you can find it for me. I will never ask for a favor again; unless you owe me like when I stick up for you. Ha.
Please and Thank you.
The whole story is very tragic..
http://www.johndennerrocks.com
I forgot to add how much I appreciate the extra few feet of Tiger wall we have that was very thoughtful of them.
Really the thing for me is not whether anybody gets any money or whether the Zoo gets hammered, I just want to see All the Zoo’s safe for people to bring their kids, luckily it does appear that the Zoo here in Tulsa is safe, I cannot see any area’s where they have taken short cuts.
The animals do not look like they can escape it does look like people can get into some of the enclosure’s if they wanted to but if they did then if something happened in there is would be their problem not the Zoo’s.
As I said before our Zoo has 17 foot high Tiger moat walls.
Susan … you may be onto something. Ha!
Thanks Susan
nb–
maybe the witness is one which was at the display Geragos exhibited in the Peterson case? the boat display?
John44 and Jennifer– sorry Oklahoma lost last night– I was cheering for them because of you two-
Were there ever any pictures of the other 2 boys other than carlos ?
Adam,
Earlier this morning, I heard a “teaser” on Fox & Friends that there was new information from a witness in the tiger attack. No follow-up yet.
Is this witness real or simply a figment of Geragos’ imagination? It’s interesting that after days and days of no witnesses coming forward, 48 hours after Mark Geragos arrives on the scene we now have a witness that’s speaking out. Hmmmm.
John44–
Adam has been all over the frigging place– one day, check out his old threads and pictures– and I bet this hasn’t even scratched the surface of where he has been–
speaking of which– Adam when are you going to deliver a picture of the day?
— lots of people here now to play the game– I promise not to post a few hundred so everyone else has space to post— I promise!!!!!!
Max— thanks for the trivia– it paid off because you got to share some interesting stuff— the lion is my favorite too because of my astrological sign but that black leopard at the zoo the other day had me wondering which I liked better- the lion or the leopard—
Here is a fun thing to read to start your morning off-
Veterinarians perform python surgery to remove four golf balls it swallowed after mistaking them for chicken eggs.
Adam– Terri knows someone one very well who played ball and you might just know him—
Terri– jump in on this—
Adam
I would imagine it is really interesting being a reporter, you probably get to meet really interesting people and go to interesting places on Fox’s dime.
It’s probably an adventurous lifestyle.
Oh, and Lions are my favorite of all the cats.
Susan: well that’s on the edge of research. Research has only determined that long manes are assosiated with fighting prowess. Male lions often lead packs in groups, with the longest maned being the overall leader. One dominence is determined lions will rarely fight within the pack.
The reason i know so much is that i’m still the same as when i was a little kid. I used to watch the dicovery channel all the time. When i was about 14 i stopped watching discovery because i got bored of watching programs i’d seen a few times before!

Susan: Actually lions do have bad hair days. When a male lion looses a fight it’s mane falls out.
Lionesses like lions with long dark manes, because that means that they rarely lose fights, and the dark color means they have a rich diet.
______________________________________________________________-
Max— I never knew this—- what don’t you know? thanks for explaining this to me—
I turned off the computer and I realized I had forgot to thank you—- so sorry
Does the male lose its mane because he is stressed or because it fell out in the fight? (serious question)
((hugs))
Oh my goodness– busy people here–
LINDA
— there were two slide shows- hope you got to see them both– one is for all the bloggers and the victims and the second for those I should have mentioned personally– the first one- I don’t think you saw- by your comment- the first one is at Jan 2- 1:29 posted– way up there with a comment to Cee Cee to check it out— I am looking so to hearing what you found out and heard as well as a few us, I bet– especially about Geragos- Oh– and so you know, the zebras on the first slide show, I think you missed, I thought about you– true story– so please check it out—- so when you can, scroll all the way up to the top and you will find the first slide show- like I said at 1:29– you need to find the zebras
I forgot to tell you, I sign as paradise– sorry– and yes, I did see the tigers on the wall- especially in the second picture–
John44-
XXXXX
I think probably atleast one of the boys was taunting but I have a hard time believing there was a slingshot because if there was I think that would have been brought up in the very first story.
Jennifer you look alot younger than your husband which is not unusual my ex-wife was 13 years younger than me.
This is addictive - I’m going to sign off though - the computer is taking forever
John - do you think the slingshot story is bogus - Dan is fairly careful with his reporting - still doesn’t mean the zoo isn’t primarily to blame imo
I don’t know if the slingshot story is true yet but it’s coming in from a number of sources now. Dan on that other station said it tonight.
It still doesn’t relieve the zoo of their responsibility.
I am surprised they don’t have videos on the cages to protect the animals as much as the people.
John 44- I liked your video
It is 9:30 here in Tulsa about my bed time, this has been fun tonight though, blogging can be addictive this is only the second blog I have been on, my first attempt at blogging was on an Aviation website where everyone complained about contracts etc.
I still check it every once in a while but it is not as fun as this one, it’s funny how this Tiger story really got everyone going.
I haven’t seen the report. I’m watching football. What I’m getting…I’m getting here.
It doesn’t sound like you believe it. What’s your take, John?
You guys don’t really believe that slingshot story do you.?
Maureen,
It sounds as if the brothers were up to no good. I’m not casting stones, but why would someone have a slingshot unless they were planning mischief.

I have a brother in Tulsa and another in Mesquite as an Army Recruiter. He was stationed in Hawaii a few years ago and didn’t like it. To each his own, I guess. My father-in-law’s wife is retired from Sabre, so we have AA ties. Yep, my family is in OKC.
That’s funny that people would ask if you knew someone.
And thanks Jeff for your comment. My husband counts it a privilege to serve in the Navy (the Army borrowed him for his stint in Baghdad) and I count it a privilege to send him off.
To whom much is given….much is required.
There is yet another news report tonight that there were rocks and branches found inside the tiger cage and the brothers were found with slingshots.

Also thank Joe for his service it’s truly appreciated.
Jennifer I noticed you said you have family in Oklahoma I live in Tulsa maybe I know them there are only about 600,000 or so people here so you know I probably might know them.
thats a joke
I work at American Airlines as a Aircraft Mechanic and everybody is always asking me if I know someone that works out there, my reply is always well there is only about 8,000 guys at the overhaul base with me so NO I probably don’t know them but every once in a blue moon I do actually know who they are asking me about.
I have pretty much lived in Tulsa oklahoma all my life except for 3 years in Hawaii in the Army, that was sweeet, I would love to live there forever.
Nice slide show Susan.
I learned some interesting things about the designs of walls/barriers for animals today, but I probably won’t post it until tomorrow…long day and it’s late here.
I also want to check out something else that Geragos is claiming, but doesn’t ring true. I’m sure that doesn’t surprise anyone.
~Linda
It’s back to school and work for us tomorrow. I’ll catch up with y’all when I can….
I’m going to bed…my Sooners are getting beat in the Fiesta Bowl….and I’m not happy about it.
Hope y’all have a nice night and a great day tomorrow. It’s been fun.

Thanks, John. I had some other pics that I wanted on the show, but they wouldn’t upload correctly. I had to delete three of them.
I appreciate your comment, too.
Nice slide show Jennifer I’m glad you kept trying the upload it’s nice to put a face with the name.
Ok…since slideshows are the flavor of the month nowadays….Here’s mine.
But I must say, it took me 10 tries to get it to upload. The connection kept timing out.

Did you notice the Tiger pictures on the wall, I had them on my walls in the military and all over my walls here at home now.
I have always liked big cats and birds.

Houston? cool site!
whoops..”memorials” not memories
I guess this place is easy for a Texan to like.
Didn’t the zoo director deny the slingshot report? I thought it was interesting that the NY Post got that tid bit before anyone else in CA.
Since we’re doing the slide show sharing…check out the first one listed “memories” and see if you can figure out from the first 5 photos what city it took place in Texas:
