OOOOOH HUGO

If your new to the blog, this is an update I do every few weeks as we follow the latest developments with Hugo Chavez in Venezuela. I still stay in touch with a number of people in the country who update me along with reports from the region. Chavez now says he wants to slow down the socialist change and has shuffled some senior members of his government. This comes as supermodel Naomi Campbell’s article in GQ is being released. She claims she wanted to see for herself if he was the man of the people as he claims. Tough to do I figure when you fly in town for a day or two, stay in the nicest hotel and only meet the people the government wants you to. I always chuckle when someone, politicians are the worst, flies into a region and spends a day to learn what’s going on. How do you actually do that in a day? Here’s more on HUGO…..President Hugo Chavez is putting the brakes on his drive for revolutionary change in Venezuela, shifting away from radical socialist reforms in favor of a pragmatic focus on everyday problems from soaring crime to trash-strewn streets. The turn comes one month after voters rejected reforms that would have greatly expanded his power and enshrined socialist principles in the constitution.”I’m forced to reduce the speed of the march,” Chavez said Sunday, telling new members of his Cabinet to “accept reality” and “put their feet on the ground.”

“This will be the year of the three R’s: Revision, rectification and relaunching,” he said.

A close ally of Cuban leader Fidel Castro, Chavez spent much of 2007 promoting his idyllic vision of a new Venezuela transformed through “21st-century socialism,” and he began by nationalizing the country’s electricity, telecommunications, natural gas and oil industries.

But Venezuelans tugged on the reins in December, narrowly voting down his far-reaching constitutional changes —and forcing the former paratroop commander to rethink his strategy for remaking this oil-rich, yet poverty-stricken South American nation. ”The problem is not an abstract ideology, it’s putting it to work,” said Steve Ellner, a political science professor at Venezuela’s University of the East. “The ideologues have to demonstrate the ideology can work.”

Ellner expects Chavez to shelve “ambitious schemes that may be criticized as impractical,” such as building offshore cities similar in design to oil platforms in the Caribbean Sea. Instead, the government is turning its attention to entrenched problems such as high crime and rampant corruption —which some say Chavez has failed to correct nine years after he was first elected.

Polls show that rising crime rates — among the highest in the Western Hemisphere —are a leading concern for Venezuelans. The Justice Ministry reported 9,402 homicides in the country of 23 million in 2005 but has yet to reveal complete figures for 2006 or 2007. ”Insecurity and corruption, they are inherited evils that we must stop cold and not allow to continue expanding. If we don’t stop them, they become the biggest enemy of our revolution,” Chavez said Sunday during his weekly radio and TV show. “I call for us to fight more successfully against these scourges.”

Venezuela also faces challenges such as a 22.5 percent annual inflation rate last year — the steepest in Latin America —and shortages of staples like milk, eggs, sugar and beef that have prompted consumers to question the government’s economic policies, including price controls.

Others complain of bumper-to-bumper traffic that clogs the streets of Venezuela’s increasingly chaotic capital, as well as ineffectual garbage collection in Caracas and other major cities.  ”In a socialist country the streets cannot be filled with trash,” Chavez said.

I think all of those Hollyweird celebrities that go kiss up to him are traitors. I think if they think they have it so bad in the U.S…. they should get out.

He is pure evil, that Hugo Chavez.

Comment by Terri ~ Las Vegas

Before anyone creams me for saying that…

that is just my opinion….
I am just so sick and tired of celebrities ~ I simply can’t stand most of them…

What ever happend to patriotism and standing up for your country???

Comment by Avi

I’m getting the sense he is starting to realize what reality reallly is about and is coming out of his fantasy land?

Comment by Karen T

Hugo seems to always have a motive. Nothing he does will be for the greater good of Venezuela. He needs all the money he can get to buy his friendship with Amadinajead.

Comment by John

Let’s put Hugo in charge of the Screen Writers Guild………then let’s see how long these “stars” like him.

Terri……….unfortunately Americans forget way to easily…………remember how most of the country united after 9/11? We all realized what evil can do and united against it………..yet now, some are willing to side with evil. Why? Who knows.

Comment by Karen T

Terri… a couple of months ago on a FOX News show, they intervied this guy that’s writing a book that has to do with terrorist groups. The writer mentioned that he was easily able to get interviews with the PR people from these groups because they like to get their word out, especially if it’s free publicity. The writer brought up the names of many celebrities that support the ideals of our enemies. Many of the terrorists groups did not know who Rosie O’donnel was but clearly recognized many other names. The terrorist(s) group said that if they were to take over America, those celebrities would be the first they would behead.

if only hollywood would relocate to Venezula.

Comment by Tiamat

Hugo Chavez of 2007/2009 is the same as Adolf Hitler of 1933 … The people in Venezuela (as well as some celebs) are being braindwashed by that nutcase …

IF people were smart, they’d start reading the history books to see just how dangerous that little man is … But, are there enough smart people to stop him & Kim Jung-Il and Amadinejhad ??

Comment by Karen T

John… I don’t know why celebrities do that. I have noticed though that the celebrities with college education seem to have more common sense and obviously intelligent.

I don’t think it’s just centralized to celebrities. We hear about them because they have the money and the means to speak out. There must be some percentage of Americans that hold the same philosophy as the celebrities who support those ideals do.

If you’re the type of person that doesn’t follow the news or politics and you’re only hearing sound bites from a mostly liberal mainstream media, plus the people in your household and ones you associate with, you may end up with the belief that Bush is bad, Amaerica is bad and we are the terrorist who invade and suppress other countries.

I’d like to hear Campbell’s report of her findings when she comes back, I’ll get a good laugh out of it. Adam’s right, there’s no way she will be able to get the real picture.

Comment by Karen T

Tiamat… one of their goals is to make America broke. That’s exactly what they’re accomplishing. Wall Street keeps saying the economy is good, but I don’t see that at my level. That’s similar to Venezuela.

Comment by John

Tiamat..problem is that the people that should be reading those history books are the citizens of the countries involved.that are “backing” their leader. And, the dictator to be, usually makes sure that those books are not available to those people, or the people are so poor that they can’t afford them. In some cases, the population is so illiterate that even if you gave them books it would do no good.

Comment by Susan- Phx- AZ

Great article Adam—insight to the economy in Venezuela– inflation, shortages– internal problems- crime—

Shelving those off shore cities and focusing in on Venezuela’s economy, traffic congestion, and so on is pragmatic– but you know Chavez– he has not changed his colors– he is trying to manipulate his people as now showing or talking about making these benevolent changes– ha!

Comment by Susan- Phx- AZ

And yes– how do you see everything in one day?? I bet Naoimi Campbell spent more time posing for herself and having a great lunch and dinner than hitting the streets— Was Sean Penn there with her?

Adam– you need to put a —-p— in Campbell’s name in your article–

Comment by Tiamat

People in countries other than Venezuela need to read the history books … that way people can stop the trio of idiots (Hugo, Kim & Mahmoud) …

Some say the NY Times is a liberal newspaper … They ought to try to read the Seattle PI & Seattle Times … Or for a total mind blow, read “The Stranger” which is a “free weekly” paper in Seattle … Those three papers combined have the US as being worse than the Great Satan …

I can’t even watch the local news anymore … Even the smallest of stories wind up taking a liberal spin to them …

Comment by Karen T

Adam has my blood pressure up again with these stories. I need to go get some work done.

Comment by Tiamat

Adam – Pssst … “Naoimi Cambell” should be Naomi Campbell … LOL

Susan – He screwed up her whole name … Though, maybe it was done on purpose (or on porpoise) … LOL

Comment by Susan- Phx- AZ

Tiamat–

good job– we work well- guacamole and Naomi— see I would have spelled her name Naoimi as he– :D

Comment by John

Karen T…….you bring up an interesting analogy…..Wall Street ANALysts and Hugo. They keep telling us everything is fine and we have nothing to worry about. Yet like you I see everything on my economic level getting worse and worse by the month………….and , luckily, I’m not ‘that’ bad off…..yet, but it definitely is not getting any better…..as those Wall Street boys will keep insisting it is, as they’re pumping our money out of this country as fast as it will go to places like China and India.

Comment by KC-Fresno, Ca.

Adam,

You are right, there is no way she will get the real picture. However, if there is a chance she will find a brain cell that is working, she just may figure it out and then, SHE CAN THROW HER CELL PHONE AT HIM AND CRACK HIS HEAD OPEN!!!! Isn’t that her MO???

Comment by Max

KC: it’d be like killing 2 birds with one stone, as his bodyguards would probably take action.

Comment by Patty

Terri..I don’t know why anyone would jump on your for your first 2 posts…I for one agree!
What happened to traitors being hung?
If they hate it so much here, we could always help them pack thier bags!!

I wasn’t at all surprised to see Oliver Stone down there giving Chavez a reacharound. Chavez may as well have been invading Columbia, Pres. Uribe was powerless to intervene due to FARC’s hostages, and of course, nothing happened. Still, Stone got to document the heroism of Hugo Chavez and the presenter of that award will be none other than Sean Penn. -Rod-

Thank you Rod– I knew someone would get to my Sean Penn question—

Comment by Tiamat

Makes me wonder IF Sean Penn really was on drugs when he filmed “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” … Or if he got brain damaged somewhere along the way … Maybe it was the marriage to Madonna ??

Danny Glover … sad sad sad … Oliver Stone has become his own conspiracy theory …

I miss the Hollywood of the 1960s & 1970s … without the crazed celebs and stalkerrazzi (which is different than the paparazzi) … You could go to “Tip’s” restaurant in Newhall and see Dino & Frank, (Bobby Troup, his wife Julie London) and others watching the master bartender create new drinks and just having a grand time … Nobody would bother them … They’d come over to your table and say hello, even if they didn’t know you …

Comment by Rod Venger

It’s pretty much the usual list of suspects, Susan. Chavez bought off Danny Glover for the price of cheap fuel oil for the denizens of Harlem. -Rod-

Comment by Rod Venger

Tiamat,

It all depends on who you are I guess. There’s a steady stream of hollywierdos that jog up and down this street throughout the week. Walking their dogs. These aren’t “A” listers of course…this is Mulholland in Woodland Hills, not Beverly, but still, recognizable faces. No one bothers them. -Rod-

Comment by Kristin

I should really comment more along the lines of the politics but, I can’t help not feel that anyone who thinks they have a really good handle on things (Naomi Campbell…please let me take a moment to laugh myself sick) are living in a dream world if they don’t live there or spend some “anonymous” time there.

Even in our own country, I think it is impossible to know what the problems are at the heart of a city if you aren’t able to spend some “non-VIP” time there. Of course if you are a super model or a famous movie star, they are going to treat you differently and keep their trash under the rug and in the closet until you leave.

The place is a mess and it needs some really legitimate change. Of course the word “change” gives me hives lately since I hear it every two minutes on TV and radio.

Comment by Kristin

Tiamat,
I thought much the same as your comments.
I watch Turner Classic Movies a lot because generally I don’t have to worry about my kids seeing anything disgusting or wrong if they walk into the room.
I miss the same thing. I miss the days when we had interesting films where there was dialog instead of a whole long hodge podge of profanity. My husband used to mock me for watching old movies and now he sits down and watches them with me.
Most of these old gems couldn’t be made today because of the salaries that the stars of today require in order to even make a film. What kind of a world are we in when the actors and the sports stars make eough money in a year to feed some neighborhoods and then they feel they can tell the rest of us to vote because the money somehow makes them smarter also.

(I just shake my head)

Comment by Rod Venger

Kristin,

I’ve been itching as well. “Change” is the new buzzword but no one’s saying what it is they’ll change us to and worse, no one’s asking.

The other day FOX’s website ran a headline, “GOP Waves Flag of Change” (or something very close) and my first thought was “Yeah…a white flag”. We’re a crowd of blind people stumbling towards the precipice.

I’m off to get some groceries. -Rod-

Comment by Tiamat

Rod – I grew up in the Valley … Went to school with people who are now celebs … The stalkerazzi don’t want the pix of celebs walking in Woodland Hills or getting a latte in Reseda or picking up a pack of steaks at Gelson’s in North Hollywood (I refuse to call it Valley Village) … They want the shots of the pop tarts falling on their faces outside of the clubs in Hollywood because the tabs pay big $$$ for those “shocker” shots … like Billy Ray Cyrus finally picking up his dog’s poop in Toluca Lake after he’d been cited for not picking it up (Guess Destiny Hope can’t find someone to hire to do it for her daddy) …

There was the paparazzi in the 1960s-1980s … The stalkerazzi changed things in the late 80s-early 90s … It’s a whole different era nowadays …

IF the celebs truly did not want to be photographed by the paparazzi / stalkerazzi … then they wouldn’t go to the “hot spots” … they’d go to places that no one is expecting them to be at … like the cinemas out in the Santa Clarita Valley …

Comment by Patty

I also watch TCM 90% of the time. I’ve always loved the old movies, and Im really not that “old”. Even as a kid, they were my choice. Maybe because I had older parents, who knows.
I’m not sure that they can truly write a good movie anymore, too much political correctness. The kind that makes you laugh, cry, and walk away with a “good feeling”.

Comment by Kristin

Rod,
You are so right.
I think that Obama’s whole strategy is to use the word “change” as much as possible. If people looked at the realism of who they elect in office, it would be a totally different thing. One person cannot do that much in 4 years to totally “change” the things already in play. It takes the help of congress, the senate, the house…lots of different departments working together on making changes.

Comment by Kristin

Patty,

I agree. I am not old enough to have seen most of these movies the first time around either. When I was in High School I had black and white glossies of Cary Grant and Bette Davis on my bedroom wall because I liked their style. I didn’t know what they thought about politics or third world dictators and I didn’t care. Their job was to entertain and they did it very well.

My family bought me some of my favorite classic movies for Christmas this year. I would love to see writers create something even half as clever as some of those scripts today.

Tiamat,

I agree with you on that the tabloids pay big money for this stuff. The problem is that people want it too. I don’t personally understand it unless it somehow makes them feel like their life isn’t so bad if someone rich like Brit can have a mental breakdown and fall apart in front of the world.

I know that if I never saw another story on Lohan or Spears or Michael Jackson or the Cruise family, it wouldn’t bother me in the slightest, but I have to be in the minority. Apparently people are watching and listening.

Susan,

I was very lucky and when I was working at a mall in San Diego, Gregory Peck came in to sign some boxed cassettes of the bible he had nararated. I spoke to him briefly and I have to say, he is one of the most handsome men I have ever seen and that was only about 20 years ago. He had a breathtaking presence and was very kind to everyone waiting. I can’t say there is anyone in Hollywood today that I would walk across the street to see, even with no waiting line.
Most of my favorite actors today are all from England or Australia.

Hugo Chavez is pure evil. I traveled extensively for many years to all parts of Venezuela and can tell you that it is a beautiful country with good people but Chavez is appealing to the poor and uneducated and will suely turn the country into another Cuba. I cannot believe that the good hard working educated people of Venezuela will not take him out of power before he totally destroys the country.

lucky you!!! I partied with Peter Fonda– and this is not an experience I would brag about– However, I went to school with Burt Lancaster’s daughter, Joanna, so I was able to meet him– he was stuck up! And Betty Grable I met because my parents were best friends with Betty Ritz who had been married to Harry Ritz- some comedian brothers from who knows when– I couldn’t find the attraction about her– she was overweight and her bleached hair looked like straw– (teen-ager’s perspective- me)– it must have been her million dollar insured legs– :D

John… Kind of trippy isn’t it? We’re one of the richest nations in the world and yet we have so many problems within. I really do see a close camparrison between us and Venezuela.

I really am getting tired of everytime Wall Street gets worried about a crisis, the price of gas goes up. And nothing ever comes of the crisis. I feel worse for Europe paying twice as much (or more) than we are.

Then Congress passes an energy law that forces American car makers to be fuel effieicent. That’s great, but they gave them something like 20 or so years to become compliant! This is coming from a majority Democrat Congress that wants fuel reduction. Those car makers don’t need all that time to make new vehicles fuel efficient.

Kristin, +1 on that! I’m reminded of the IBM engineer that hung a sign is his office that said, “THNIK”.
Just what are we doing? People better give it some thought, drop the whole, “Bush is the worst President in history” babble and understand that it’s within our power to make things worse. It’s far far easier to do that than make things better. Better take work and guess what? As a people we’ve long since abandoned our work ethic and instead take the path of least resistance. If the people want to see how difficult things really are, they need only look at Pelosi’s frustrations, she who promised them the world and delivered virtually nothing. In all fairness, Obama’s not doing anything that every other candidate in my lifetime has done, but how sad is it that we have not learned a thing from the decades of high-schoolish rah-rah speeches and broken promises? Ultimately it’s all out fault, not theirs.

Morning Susan! I’m going to grab some lunch, tend the birds, etc. I’ll be back. -Rod-

Susan – LOL … Adam’s been hanging around the politicians too much … LOL ;-)

John – I went to high school with the gal that starred in the “Holly does Hollywood” series … Don’t go running out to find what type of movie those are … LOL

Naomi’s turning into a career criminal like that SOB Rodney King … LOL … She is definitely getting a rap sheet that’s getting thicker by the year …

Kristin – Yes, people want the tabloids (print & tv) because it helps them feel better about themselves … It’s the whole “Hey, she had a meltdown so now I know I’m not alone” and “Wow, she got a DUI and I’ve never had one” or “She was dumb & got knocked up at 16″ routine … It’s a perverse form of self-medicating by getting pleasure & gaining self-esteem out of the celebs’ misfortune …

The old movie gems were done under the old “contract players” formula … The studios had staff writers creating the movies and put the actors in them that were under contract … The only studio that’s doing that nowadays is Disney … Just look at the Disney Channel to see the kids in the tv series in the DCOM (Disney Channel Original Movies) … I’m not knocking it because it works … Though, in the olden days, the actors/actresses would have chaperones that escorted them to be “seen” at the clubs & such and to keep their hineys outta trouble …

“Seven Year Itch” was on the local PBS station the other night … It was quite a shock to see it … I forgot how talented Marilyn truly was …

The word “change” needs to be wiped off the face of the earth … Nobody that is running for President is a “candidate of change” … They’re all politicians which means it’ll be another politician as president and that’s NOT change …

The media also needs to stop pronouncing campaigns dead or in trouble … There’s been a total of TWO states that have held caucuses … Last time I looked, we had 50 states … Stop people, PLEASE !!!

There are MUCH easier and cleaner and safer
ways to provide an easy death.
Administer laughing gas without oxygen via

This gas needs no special room …only
some light ventilation to prevent
onlookers from getting high.
Guess the scare factor is missing with that.

Tiamat,
You are so very right! I agree with most everything you said.
“Change” is just a catch word at this point.

Blech!

Rod,
Your point about abandoning the work ethic is SO true! I can’t beleive what goes on nowadays. I think that older workers that actually have a work ethic are going to become more and more and valuable as time goes on. I know several young people in my community that have graduated a few years back and haven’t stayed in school and haven’t found a steady job yet. They think that if they want to go out and are scheduled to work, they should just quit instead.

Hugo, Fidel….is this a surprise to anyone?
Can you imagine if we lived like that?

good night— nice talking with you Kristin– and Tiamat– you still crack me up!!! You are totally right about the tabloids– anything to make them feel better about themselves- I am so far from having lived a perfect life– and if anyone wants to know anything about me, I am not going to lie and fabricate myself as being some super perfect example on how to live life– no way- But I still think Britney is a brat– not that I haven’t pulled any of her stunts- what pisses me off, I had to take the punishment and she gets away with her chara— this is where I get upset— :D
