Tough Call on the High Seas

The video from the U.S Navy and the radio contact from the Iranians is not only disturbing, but somewhat common so I am told. I was aboard the USS Milius in the Persian Gulf for a week just prior to its missile launch to start the war in 2003 and also have spent time on the water with the USS Reagan and recently with the Lake Erie in the Pacific.

Each Captain told me, deciding when and if to engage is the toughest decision they have to make – especially in that region of the world (The Persian Gulf, Indian Ocean, Red Sea area), where they encounter smaller vessels all the time. Many are native fishermen with no radios and boats that barely float, but which could still possibly be a threat.

The Iranians also regularly send boats out to harrass our warships in an attempt to incite an incident. As one Captain told me, “If I fire on a boat and the people are innocent then it becomes an international incident and I have to answer to myself and my superiors. If I don’t and they hit us, then I have allowed my men, women and ship to be attacked. We are in a very touchy and difficult position.”

There are rules and regulations from the Navy and Pentagon for engagement, but Captains make the final determination on the front line. Here’s a picture I took as our helicopter approached the USS Milius in the Persian Gulf.

Didn’t the Iranians just play battleship with the American ships? Bush said- it wasn’t necessary for them?

Comment by Susan- Phx- AZ

What were in those boxes which were dropped by the Iranians?

Comment by Susan- Phx- AZ

BTW– COOL picture– the water looks so inviting– maybe not?

Unfortunately, one of these days they will succeed…………in either starting an incident, or worse yet, blowing up one of our vessels.

Comment by Terri ~ Las Vegas

In my opinion… they posed a real threat to Navy… saying they were going to explode in two minutes…racing and towards them…. I watched and listened to that video….
they weren’t innocent casual boaters….

I think the Navy should have blown those five boats to bits.

But that’s just me….

one day…. we’re going to get it again.

Comment by Susan- Phx- AZ

What was in those boxes? Anthrax– :D

dirty fighters-

Comment by John

The Cole was basically a terrorist operation. As crude as this may seem, these are offensive military operations by Iran against our warships. The question is why are they provoking us into an attack? What are they hoping to accomplish, militarily and/or politicaly, by having us attack them? Are they baiting us into a trap? This is equal to “taunting the tiger” and you see where that led us.
Many questions with very few answers.

March 19, 2003 the day the war started and the day my only brother died (but not connected except by the date) :(

Comment by Karen T

This war is so much different than previous ones. I would imagine that our service men and women had to undergo additional training. The traditional training couldn’t possibly keep up with this day and age. Now their using cell phones and IUDs. You can’t even tell if a man, woman or child is going to blow you up. I never see pictures of the enemy’s uniform. What I see is terrorists dressed in civilian clothing.

Comment by Karen T

Why isn’t Amadinijead stopping those guys from antagonizing our ships? Does he really want us to interact like that?

Comment by Max

but Captains make the final determination on the front line.

That a big difference between the UK and US military, if the UK navy was under the same rules those Royal Marines would not have been caught last year, as it was, the captin had to phone london, to ask some beaurocrat if he could blow up the Iranian boat, the reply was No, but even if it had been a Yes it would have been to late. This is one reason i’d much rather be in the US military that the UK’s.
That was the same reason the Germans and then the Americans did so well in the world wars, gave much more control to those risking their lives.

Comment by KC-Fresno, Ca.

Iran stated that the US “fabricated” warship confrontation video

WOW, let’s get a visual on this one

We (the US) are by someone’s swimming pool, putting little toy boats and a ship in the water, and then using a hair dryer to blow the boats all around the ship, while someone laying in a lounge chair is yelling, we are going to blow you up

Don’t know how Iran figured it out so fast

Amadinijead is a dirty low life– and he text messages with Chavez and sends Castro meds for his dialysis— :D

Amadinijead doesn’t have control of the Revolutionairy guard, he used to be a member, but he is not their leader. They answer to the Ayatollah.

Comment by Karen T

It doesn’t matter to me how myself or anyone else spells the President of Iran’s last name… I don”t have that kind of time to look it up on the internet, I’m sure everyone knows who I am talking about though. I do know how spell Adam’s last name and have posted it correctly many times.

Adam’s last name– House in the Lai-

Comment by Susan- Phx- AZ

Karen–

come on– you know I am having fun— at least you knew who he is– I just know him by the horse’s arse– I had to type in your name of him to get the spelling– true story

Comment by John

Another ” impossible ” decision for the military could happen if there was another 9/11 type attack in progress. When do you determine to shoot down an airliner filled with hundreds of innocent civilians that appears to be headed for a target? I’d hate to be that decision maker.

Comment by Karen T

John, I read the 9/11 Commission Report (it was long). It was hard for me follow exactly who had the authority to make decisions. It was a mess! There was a power struggle between departments. And I mean this includes things that happened leading up to the attack, even when Clinton was in office. What happened in the minutes that followed the first tower being hit was insane. What a horrifying decision to make, do you blow up a plane filled with innocent victims in order to save the lives of other possible victims on the ground, without the knowledge of knowing if the terrorists are going to use that plane as a weapon?

Comment by Susan- Phx- AZ

Comment by Avi

Karen i read the 9/11 report as well in 7th grade… i have it on my book shelf still…. first politcal book i read…….. good read alot of details and shows the mistakes ….

Comment by Max

Susan: Avi wouldn’t need a visa as he’s American. I wouldn’t need one as the visa waver program would allow me to stay for 90 days, though I will need one when i go to college. but that should be easy to get.

Comment by Max

I read the 9/11 report as well, the problem was that there were so many different agencies. No one had control, what is needed is for mergers of various agiencies, it would save money, and allow clear control in similar situations. The department of homland security is a step in the right direction, but we need other agencies merged as well.

Comment by Patty

Avi…you have to be one of the only 7th graders to read that report!! (atleast the ones i know)
Is school over there, like here? I mean like 7th grade here would make a kid 12(ish) yrs old.

Comment by Patty

Max, i think thats where the gov’t screws up big time. even as far down the line as i am, none of our offices can get along. It gets so old! We are all supposed to be here for one goal.
example….Why should our office to the very same thing thier office just did, all because they wont share info. grrrrrrrr

Comment by Avi

YAH it was when i was 12/13ish …… It wasnt to hard to read ….. would do you mean is school over?

Comment by Avi

oo and i remember my science teacher wanted my book after i finised reading it lol…. i read it during reading time in science class( our school had reading time ) haha

Comment by Patty

avi…not… is school “over” as in done…it was “over” as in across the water :-)

Comment by Karen T

Max… I sure hope our Government has their act together now.

I can’t imagine what this Captain had to go through when he was confronted with these little boats making threats. I have a lot of respect for him and wish him well. Obviously he’s an excellent Captain.

Comment by Karen T

Adam… I would guess that the time you spent on those ships, you were able to see first hand the attitude of our military. Most of the reports I hear, when it’s coming directly from our soldiers, is they want to be there and they have strong convictions as to why they should be there.

These are extrodinary men and women fighting to keep us safe, all around the world. That includes all of our allies military.

Comment by Max

karen: at least he knew he had the option of blowing them out of the water.

Patty: a lot of problems in my life have been caused by people not doing things, because other people said they would do it, but didn’t, and no one told me it was to be done. Socialism has screwed up a lot of my life so far, lol!
Government just needs streamlining, and a lot of things could be passed off to the private sector.

Comment by Tiamat

My apologies Tiamat… That was my imprsession of multi-tasking while at work! I stand corrected… IEDs… bah hahahaha

Comment by Emily

Our military is out making the tough calls all the time. Sadly, we don’t hear much about the positive or great decisions they make, but the bad decisions are the only ones we are going to hear about over and over again on the news for weeks and months. I know that their actions and decisions need to be reviewed, I just wish that there was equal focus placed on the good things they do.

Comment by Susan- Phx- AZ

I think this thread should be– Tough Call on the High Thread- :D

Emily– you peeked in— bless you– I knew the thread- Waiting and Waiting- would become too long of a visit— tee hee-

Terroists— well- they just seem to multiply like littte bunnies— How about poisoning these guys?
Like Eva Braun should have done to her boyfriend? These most omnipotent leaders are the ones who poison the mass– called like Stockholm thinking—

We have to kiss their butts to go by treaties and so on and so on– when these murderers who don’t want to exchange trade in a benelovent manner to help this world get along, because their egotistical low fused brains have to have control—

SO PATHETIC!

Comment by Tiamat

The 9-11 report had problems because of the problems of WHO was on the commission … Jamie Gorelick should NOT have been on it … It was she that developed that wouldn’t let the CIA talk to the FBI, which has got to be one of the stupidest things the federal govt has ever done …

Iran is taunting the tiger … and they will get bit …

Susan – Go go some gadgets … ;-)

If I were the US Navy, any boat approaching or brazenly circling would be blown to Kingdom Come.
Did we forget the USS Cole?

Adam–
in response to your comment to Avi about the psycho in Iran– yes– the email address can be tracked– but here is a taste of his only- very only- first introductory paragraph-

A Guideline for Islamic Governance 2007/12/01
In the Name of Almighty God, the All-Knowing, the Most Lovingly Compassionate

One’s perspective regarding government and governance determines the way one ?should cooperate with the people. If one recognizes government as a privilege and prey ?of the governors, then the period of governance can be counted as an opportunity to fulfill ?the expectations of certain individuals and groups or the ostentation and hedonism of the ?governors.?

But if in our view, “government” would be a responsibility before God for ?establishing justice and a duty to ensure the rights of common people, serving the ?servants of God and helping the oppressed- then the most important issue will be the ?people’s concerns. If this is the case, governors would not view themselves as better than ?other people and they wouldn’t put themselves in any other position except serving the ?people……. blah and blah and blah ?

Here is a fun true cop story— and I copied it from the cop’s site– and I don’t think he will yell at me

I’m Amphibious!

When I was a police officer, in North Carolina, we had one particular individual who was a long time dealer in street pharmacuticals. I got the arrest one day when he was finally caught with product on him. We got to the jail and as I was filling out the arrest report, I asked him the very last question on the form “handedness”, “Are you right handed or left handed”? This guy looks right at me, puffs out his chest with pride, as he tells me “I can write with both hands, I’m amphibious”!

I thought we had 1/2 mile security bubble around our ships? If some lunatic is screaming over the radio and coming at us at 60mph, hose him down when he gets to 600yds. That’s 200 inside the bubble and that’s called intent. Make sure it’s all caught on video with the appropriate audio dubbed in. -Rod-

Comment by Max

Susan: have fun at your work! :)

Comment by John

Rod……….that’s what makes no sense. The Iranians know full well what our “buffer” zone is before we defend ourselves when provoked and history has shown that we will defend ourselves. The question is, why are they provoking us into an attack? They know full well the deadly capabilities of our navy ships. Are they trying to see how we counteratteck so they can learn how to attack us succesfully? Are they performing “dry-runs” for some sinister future attack? Are they under orders from Tehran, or are these rogue elements of the Iranian armed forces just raising some hell?
So many questions, besides the obvious ,”are these guys idiots?”, come up.

Give them some pride and training. Teach them survival skills, and basic hand to hand combat. Make them all excellent marksman. We could even teach them how to wear suicide vests properly. Teach them to scope out where to detonate at to cause the most damage. We could outfit them with vests that work like “miles” gear (old army guys will remember that but for the rest think “laser tag) they could run into crowded streets and “detonate” their training vest and see how much damage they would have caused. Towards the end of their training, when they are all amped up and ready to kill we could get them all excited about passing the “live fire” range. march them out to a field and have the first guy run into the field and detonate with his real vest “ooooooooh” we could all exclaim as he gets blown to hell “nice job” lets get the next guy in the shoot and see if he does better, keep all of those guys highly motivated as they wait in line to demonstrate what they have learned. We could put names on the walls for those that detonated themselves the best and keep those guys trying to out perform the guy that detonated in front of him. then when that entire “graduating class” has passed the live fire and all that remains is a pile of blown to bits carcasses, all of us trainers can go take a piss on them and get ready for our next rotation of recruits while the bulldozers clean up the “terrorist live fire range”….just a thought

Off subject………….just got a call from a buddy of mine who’s vacationing in Ecuador with his wife. That volcano, Tungurahua(sp?) is getting ready to blow. They’re about 85 miles to the north of the volcano in the capital,Quito and they’re being warned that this could be a really big eruption at any time. Possible effecting the city itself with ash and lava fallout if the volcano explodes……….ala Mt. St Helens. Some scary stuff down there

Adam

Thanks for commenting on my swimming pool, toy boats analogy – 1/9/08-4:05pm. Hope you also know I was being very sarcastic.

Also agree that the foreign press will treat this claim on facts instead of skepticism which is the proper and correct way to handle this.

I just could not believe that he thinks we (US) have nothing better to do than to fabricate videos against his country.

Must say, I am a Leo and this old (oops-mature) lioness had to roar on this one!!!!!

Here is a link to one of Adam’s bogs when he was on the USS Erie. It’s a good read and gives minute by minute account of what took place when they did the simulated missile launch. The “Day Four” link will have you on the edge of your seat.

There’s other blogs I’m reading now.

Adam…I can’t find the blogs for the USS Reagan or the USS Milius. Do you have a link handy that you can post please?

What I found interesting, aside from the missile testing itself, was the use of contractors in the Navy. I heard that in Irag we are even contracting out the mess hall duties. I heard a report that said it cost $16 per meal per soldier and if the soldier gets back inline to eat again another $16 was added onto our bill. On the USS Erie there were Navy guys who had their own responsibilities but also spent time in the mess hall.

In Adam’s blog (I posted the link above), on the USS Erie, Adam mentioned that there were contractors from Lockheed (and other companies for other reasons), the ones that developed the radar eguipment/system to intercept missiles. I can see why those contractors were there.

None the less… the simulated missile launch was a success. I thought it was nice how Adam connected some of the crew with their families through that particular blog. The crew, through Adam’s eyes, seemed to have a lot of respect for their captain. Including Adam who suddenly felt the need to tuck in his shirt even tighter when he saw that crew members were hustling to get their uniforms flaw free when the captain walked in. I got a good laugh out of that one!

from your comments above: I have spent enough time with the military to tell you they will not let Cole happen again.

Do you believe the Iranians said this about Vincennes?

Bold statement Mr Housley I understand that you are making a point but all you have is reporter experience. That is your only measurement. There are many Lessons Learned from many incidents we- –The US— do not want to happen again. But no one has a crystal ball and reporters nor pollsters have the capability of telling that fortune.

Now with that said I hope your not offended and are able to accept this as Americas constructive criticism regarding the news. What America is concerned about is what the majority wants to tolerate and if it will be a physical or financial impact. Hopefully we as a whole (US) take that in complete considerationwhen we exchange leadership upon this election year

After review of the videos on TV, it’s clear that they were also shouting threatening comments back in response to the warning given them by the Navy officer.

The basic premise is that we ARE at war with the Jihadists and fundamental terrorists making up Hamas, Hezbollah, Al Qaeda, etc.

Those boats were also much faster than the one which hit the USS Cole.

Respectfully, we should have torched them.

Having spent 4 years in the Navy, all be it 1964 to 1968, there is one thing that you learn, “The more manuverable ship give way in case of incursion”. With what appeared to be (cigar type) speed boats, there was no time for political thoughts to have even been considered. The Captains first consideration always is the same, the saftey of his ship and crew. He failed.
He should be relieved of his command. We are lucky things turneds out as they did.

This attitude it exactly what happened on 9/11/01 and with North Korea when they captured our ship and crew many years ago.

If you have a child who tells you their going to kill themselves, You, must act. Whats the difference here, and these people know what their saying.
