Media Burnout??

I had a good friend send me this link to a Ball State University study about burnout in newspaper journalism.
Interesting and since I know some of you are cynical about papers these days, I thought I might stick up for them a bit. I still read the paper, several in fact, even if they upset me sometimes with their slant. Of course it depends on the paper and the issue and the writer.
The three-component Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey was implemented to examine burnout among newspaper journalists. With a moderate rate of exhaustion, a high rate of cynicism and a moderate rate of professional efficacy, burnout among journalists demonstrate higher rates of burnout than previous work. Additionally, journalists expressing intentions to leave the profession demonstrated high rates of exhaustion and cynicism, and moderate rates of professional efficacy, making them “at-risk” for burnout. Also, 74.5 percent of journalists 34 and younger expressed intentions to either leave newspaper journalism or answered “don’t know.” The most “at-risk” to burnout appear to be young copy editors or page designers working at small newspapers.

I think that society’s thirst for instant information is the main reason newspapers are less popular, at least among the internet and 24 hour news watching crowds. I still read certain sections of the daily paper at certain times of the day……………..kind of akward holding a laptop on your lap while “relieving” yourself………….and, it makes a better backup as the forementioned, should the role be empty.
Funny John!
I don’t feel sorry for the journalists at the newspapers. For the most part – most of them puke out their liberal half truths on us peasants down below. Consumers are voting them out with their pocketbooks and that’s just the way it goes.
My one of my big local papers that I liked stopped the presses last month after being in business for 126 years. People don’t subscribe. I read the paper online..but it won’t be on here now either. Now I don’t know how to find out who died.
Our tiny local paper added colored pictures to help increase subscription, but that just isn’t what people want- instant information is too available, like John says.
I think when the older generation is gone, most newspapers will be too.
Unfortunately, access to the internet is so easy to read the paper– reading the paper is going to be something we see on Norman Rockwell’s pictures—
Cool picture your friend sent to emphasize your post-
We have someone here trying out for the Major Leagues– this 14 year old, using his bat, just whacked the chara out of burglar who broke in his house as the kid hid in the closet– O’Reilly- Patriot!!!!!
Bats are a good investment– I own one too– but I don’t use it for playing ball– I bought one four years ago when someone tried to break in when I lived at Canyon Creek and Tomasa still had life in her and scared the chara out of him– he made it to the window and that was it– She jumped on the window sill-and started growling and barking- I lived right next to a wall- the guy jumped that wall faster than Tatiana! So I bought a bat the next day— as this happened at 2:30 a.m. true story-
The guy who tried to break in was probably going to steal stuff so he could pawn it to buy some of that Venezuelan cocaine– but then if he had broken in and I had a bat, I would have used it as the 14 year old did and I would have been in the newspaper– (did I connect this, Jen?)
I don’t own a gun– A) I don’t know how to use one B) I am afraid of guns-
For me, reading newspapers has become obsolete. Aside from the issue that they’re slanted to the left and one may even say to the extreme, we’ve become acustomed to having instant information. we’re spoiled.
Until you made this thread I never once considered the reporter who writes the stories and the effect it is having on the writer. As a reader it visibly comes out within the stories that there is an underlying agenda coming from the newspaper.
If a journalist has social views that are somwhat conservative and somewhat liberal and if they write a story, would that journalist feel the need to slant the story farther to the left (more than perhaps they wanted to) to conform to the overall views of the newspaper itself? Are the majority of these newspaper journalists really that liberal or are they slanting their stories, against their better judgements, to make the bosses happy?
You mention in your post the number of young journalists that this is affecting. There would probably be a honeymoon period of getting out of college all energized and ready to tackle mainstream issues. They naturally have the thought of freedom of speech backing them up and some would already have an idea of the topics they want to cover.
But no matter how you look at it, regarless of the topic they are covering, it seems to come down to liberal vrs conservative. This is a day and age where the journalist is constantly on the move to get the stories quickly and beat everyone to the punch. How much stamina can a person have to do that. And how often do you hear of positive stories in the news? It’s mostly all negative and cristicing something or someone. Living that day in and day out must have some affect on the journalist.
Susan,
You’re A) Afraid of guns because you B) Don’t know how to use one, but C) Could easily learn.
On the otherhand, I shoot 100/200/300 yard benchrest (precision rifle) and will shoot 5 shot groups 1/4″ across. Or the idiot fly that lands on my target. Serious. It’s good to have a skill
Burnout…a newspaper is obsolete before it’s delivered. It used to be we were satisfied with that, but things have changed. A newspaper reporter’s work is kind of stuck on the bottom shelf. He can’t keep up with what’s going on. By the time his work gets into the consumer’s hands, most people have already known about it for hours. His day’s work getting updates will be over 12 hours old by the time someone reads it in the morning. Burnout therefore seems to have a large apathy component. Why bother? -Rod-
Lately im getting bored of reading the paper…. its like old news sorta ( if you check the news at lets say 11pm) then the paper isnt going to have any more info a little of any
hence papers can now be read online
besides the NYT supplament in the paper the rest of it is old news if you know what i mean…..
the features and the Friday paper is better…. more indepth stories….
and we get two english dailys the J-Post and the Harretz ( which has more content)
and israeli hebrew papers which we barely read lol !
Avi… we’re too spolied!
I’ve been accustomed to watching cable news for years now. When I turn on the local news in the morning, I notice the difference in the style of reporting. I also recognize that the local stations are not going out in the field to get their stories. I’m here in Vegas, a lot happens here. But what I see from the local networks is that their going on the internet and getting stories from other entities. They’re not spending money on their own reporting. Then when several times I hear their reports, ones that I heard on FNC the night before, and they don’t have their facts straight. FNC shows you the report and backs it up. These network reporters are not even reporting what’s really happening.
When I go online to look up a story from a newspaper. There’s also a noticible difference in the style of reporting of what I see on the FNC website and the newpaper’s website. Now I don’t know if that’s because I have a preconceived notion that the other newsarticles have a hidden agenda so I can’t take any of their reports as fact.
Speaking of media burnout…………………..BRITTNEY SPEARS!! Okay, can we just let this one go? Do we have to follow her on a slow speed chase to the food court? Do we have to follow her three hours late to the court room? And guess what………..I got all that info from watching Fox giving little blips here and there.
I’m a Christian, I pray for the girl – but I do not care to hear her step by step screw ups every single day. When the media drops this girl because she is all used up – what happens next? She gets life from this stuff (as crappy as it has to be). What will she have to do next to recapture the media’s attention?
I would much rather hear about the Chinese having a stare down with the USS Kitty or something along those lines.
Brittney Spears is a sad story that just keeps getting sadder (is that a word – it doesn’t look right). Can we just please NOT go to the scary hell where Brittney lives anymore?
Done venting.
Thank you.
Tammy, I agree, I don’t like watching those reports, it’s been an over kill lately.
Here’s my thinking on this issue….
I want FNC to be reporting on the pop tarts. Those story lines pull in people around the world that would not normally watch FNC. They would normally be watching left wing cable channels where they are being brainwashed. It’s better for the greater good if they watched FNC.
Karen, good point about the reporting. I’ve noticed that a lot of news outlets are just linking to stories found on topix.com. CNN seems to do it quite a bit. I guess they save on wages that way. -Rod-
Rod, I didn’t know that the big networks were doing that too… What crap!
It is. Or they send you to a local affiliate website. It’s lazy, it opens too many windows and increases traffic on the net…probably slowing it at times. -Rod-
My sister is an editor at a small newspaper. She is an excellent employee and has enjoyed her job until recently. She has had a steady stream of lead editors over her the past 3 years and none of them stay long. The last one proceeded to hire inexperienced people to take over jobs as he either fired people, or they left. This leaves my sister with a whole office of newbies that need constant guidance and don’t look past their nose to find the answer to anything.
The poor girl had a breakdown this past summer due to the enormous amount of stress that she is under. She is doing well now, but hopes to go to a larger paper so she isn’t spread so thin. I have a lot of respect for what she does. She puts her heart and soul into her job. Her husband just recently left the paper they were both working at and he wonders if he will seek a different career too.
Adam–
I bet you do– bat ownership– except you know how to use them– or BATS as those things that hang out in caves? And if so– you just called me a bat or batty? I have a picture someone sent me of my head on a bat– true story– I can send it to Rod and he will tell you I am not kidding–
that place where that guy tried to break in where I lived was like a bat cave– the lighting from outdoors was poor because of the north -south exposure and the high walls, so I use to call my place- the bat cave– and one of my neighbors back then sent it to me as a joke—- I printed it and hung it on my door- Welcome and the picture-
You need to interject this picture in one of our debates when we get heated up–
Tammy,
I have to agree with you on part of that. The thing I don’t understand is that I hear the media outlets saying that everyone wants to hear about Brit and her disaster of a life. YET….I hear the fine people here and others I know say that they could care less.
I think the girl is addicted to the high she gets off of her own fame. I completely avoid Entertainment Tonight and some of the other shows that are formatted around her, but I can’t help see her on FOX. It’s disturbing, I have a hard time understanding why it is news, but I guess it isn’t just up to me.
Poor thread– you didn’t get enough attention–
well I will say good night to you- nite
John–
If stop by here I need a fix–You said you’d keep us updated on other news while Adam is out and about.
I don’t get the paper. Thanks.
Jen–
I think Juan did an update on the tiger thread– new news came out today– I read it over at Greta’s– her dog is sick too—
John’s report is on Hugo and the Cartels at 12:13 pm.
-Great reporting I might add.
Our local paper is awful, they cover every town around here but the one they are in.
Nationally the papers just have a bias, no way not for it show. The way they word an article you can tell what the reporters think. I don’t feel sorry for people doing a job they don’t like, we all do that most of the time.
BTW Adam I will do the legwork for you on the Bush wedding if you need some. Never want to be seen on camera, just want to be snoppy.
Adam… that was good…. you have BATS! ha ha ha!
How many are silver plated like baby shoes???
Susan – Maybe Adam’s BATS are in his belfry??
LOL
I had a bat come flyin’ at my head at a SoCal amusement park … Needless to say, this girl was NOT amused … Twas the live bat mammal, not the wooden / aluminum kind …
I used to work in the news and entertainment industries … But, I left both behind … Lost the taste for the blood lust, so to speak … The thrill of the “kill” just left me empty … Though, seeing the worst humanity has to offer tends to do that to some people …
Susan – I went into a self-imposed exile because of certain subject matters that Adam was covering / blogging … What I have to say may very well alienate people … So, I’m holding my tongue (& fingers) …
Tiamat-
bats in the belfry–
so that is why you were not around–
when we lived in Baranquilla, we use to leave the patio doors open, and a bat flew in one night– scared the crap out of my brother and me– dad started closing the doors–
