Guyana

From the time the pilot tells us we have reached the Guyana coast, I can tell things here are different. A blackness envelopes the land like nothing I have seen before. At least when you cross an ocean, the reflection from the moon can sometimes bounce off of the mighty waters thousands of miles below.

In this case, no illumination whatsoever. I see nothing.I am told we are crossing over the jungle and for that matter, almost all of this once British colony consists of rain forest jungle. I don’t even realize we have reached the capital city of Georgetown until the wheels touch down on a hard landing. The airport reminds me of Maui’s back in the early 1980s before tourism took the island. The door opens and humidity fills the cabin and as I step out onto the stairway that leads me to the tarmac, the ground has been recently washed with a thick tropical rain.

Getting here to cover this story, which I will explain in the coming days, was no easy task. First, as you may have heard, the Venezuelan Government had been threatening to throw us out of the country. What the hard-liners didn’t know, was that we had already booked tickets and finished our reporting. So, at 6am we were of to the airport for what would become a very long day.

It seems flying out of Venezuela can be a bit interesting these days, unless you are flying to a U.S. hub like Miami, or Houston. Getting around the Caribbean can be a bit tricky and there’s no straight shot flying between Venezuela and neighboring Guyana. So when we got to the airport and stood inline looking at a counter for the airline ‘Aeropostal’, we became a bit worried when it appeared the counter hadn’t been used since the Carter Administration.

First a half hour passed and we were warned that lately it seems the airline has some issues with being on time. Delays can be as short as ‘only’ a couple of hours, up to 10! Looks like our stop in Port of Spain Trinidad is in jeopardy.

After an hour the news comes. Apparently there’s a bit of a strike by the employees … tough to figure why they would do that when they haven’t been paid in months, according to airport security. No one ever really comes to tell us we have a better chance of flapping our arms and flying ourselves, than boarding this Venezuelan airline, but it becomes clear that the flight is at least 12 hours delayed…that’s not going to make Hugo happy.

So on the phones we go. Nora secures seats back to Miami and then a flight to Georgetown, a long way, but likely the only option. I get on the other line and find that we can get out of Caracas to various Caribbean islands, but flights from those islands to Port of Spain or Georgetown are all sold out. I could have gotten us on a triple connection that saved an hour, not worth it. Instead we booked the Miami flight and crisscrossed the West Indies on quite a unique travel day.

AND…after all that, the story in Trinidad, the arraignment on the JFK terror suspect….well his hearing was postponed. Rumor has it, that he might be released rather than extradited to the United States because under Trinidad law, the charges have to match and it doesn’t have a terror prosecution charge like the United States does. That could get interesting. More on this story tomorrow and also I have a ton of stuff written about Venezuela that I will post in the coming days also.

As venezuelan, I am most gratefull for your audacious determination in the uncoverening, for the world to know, of the real criminal nature of Hugo’s Chavez regimen. We, venezuelan people need all the help we can get to get rid of this nightmare called “revolution”, that has cost us our future.
Thanks again, and pardom me for my spelling…

Adam– you need to put up another Venezuela thread— for me– I am still over there looking at a new link which has a newspaper article describing you and what you wrote on your BLOG– being at the airport—

so then I started clicking on Chavez and saw the video of him addressing the National Assembly– he proposed a new referendum– in which he stated to his audience it was up to them, their voices and or petition to make an amendment to the constitution there so a president can rule indefinitely– the all stood up and started chanting his name—

He also said the price of oil, thanks to him, went from ten bucks to 100—–

But this one I have to share— it came from the comments written about you and the airport– no need to watch it all- It is in Portuguese– but one doesn’t need to know the language as the video speaks for itself- I kind of like the music– like rap sort of-

WOW CHECK THIS OUT FROM DEBKA.COM

DEBKAfile Exclusive: The successful test-firing of an Israeli long-range nuclear-capable missile Thursday timed for Russian naval exercise

January 18, 2008, 12:30 PM (GMT+02:00)

It was coordinated with the US Missile Defense Program.

Israeli and US defense officials tied up the last ends during President George. W. Bush’s visit last week. The successful test of a propulsion system for the dual-stage missile from the Palmahim base Thursday, Jan. 17, was a breakthrough. Western military experts report the new system can propel the missile to any point on earth – an intercontinental capability owned only by the US, Russia, China and France, with important applications for Israel’s military and civilian satellite programs as well.

The test’s context was as much the huge Russian naval maneuver launched in the Mediterranean Tuesday, Jan. 16, as missile and potential nuclear threats from Iran. Eleven vessels were drawn for the war game from two Russian fleets, Atlantic Northwest and Black Sea. It is led by the Admiral Kuznetsov air carrier with 47 warplanes and 10 helicopters on board and the Moskva missile cruiser.

The Israeli propulsion test coincided with a tactical Russian missile launch and landed in the same part of the sea. It sent out a signal that the entire Mediterranean, including the permanent bases Moscow is in the course of establishing in the Syrian naval ports of Tartous and Latakia, are within range.

Our military sources report that US Sixth Fleet vessels cordoned off the landing area of the Israeli missile and prevented Russian ships from closely tracking its course.

Those sources stress that the missile tested Thursday was not the Jericho-3 described by “foreign sources” as having a range of 5,000 km, which is a three-stage missile, whereas the weapon tested had a dual-stage engine.

The day before the test, Lt. Gen. Henry Obering, head of the US anti-missile missile authority commented that Iran was the most active country in flight-testing missiles last year, behind Russian and China. “They’re developing ranges of missiles that go far beyond anything they would need in a regional fight, for example, with Israel,” he said.

Western military sources sum up the test as demonstrating that while Iran was still in the development stage of its ballistic missiles, Israel had raced ahead and left the Islamic Republic standing.

Amid these developments, Israeli foreign minister Tzipi Livni arrived in Moscow Wednesday, Jan. 16, and, in an unusual tone of reproof, remarked that the fuel rods Russia was letting Iran have to power its nuclear reactor in Bushehr could be used for making nuclear weapons.

She was challenging Russian president Vladimir Putin’s assurance last December, when the first delivery was made, that he had received Tehran’s guarantees that this was not happen. At the time, President Bush justified his approval of the consignment by arguing it would serve to convince Iran to give up uranium enrichment.

By challenging the two presidents, Livni made it clear that Israel has no intention of standing by for Iran to arm itself with a nuclear bomb. The public demonstration of Israel’s intercontinental missile capability gave her extra muscle.

But the next day, Moscow shipped a third consignment of 11 tons of nuclear fuel to Iran’s Bushehr.

Canada takes close allies U.S., Israel off torture watchlist
By News Agencies

Canada’s foreign ministry, responding to pressure from close allies, said on Saturday it would remove the United States and Israel from a watch list of countries where prisoners risk being tortured.

Both nations expressed unhappiness after it emerged that they had been listed in a document that formed part of a training course manual on torture awareness given to Canadian diplomats.

Canadian Foreign Minister Maxime Bernier said he regretted the embarrassment caused by the public disclosure of the manual, which also classified some U.S. interrogation techniques as torture.
“It contains a list that wrongly includes some of our closest allies. I have directed that the manual be reviewed and rewritten,” Bernier said in a statement.

“The manual is neither a policy document nor a statement of policy. As such, it does not convey the government’s views or positions.”

The document – made available to media outlets – embarrassed the minority Conservative government, which is a close ally of both the United States and Israel.

“We find it to be offensive for us to be on the same list with countries like Iran and China. Quite frankly it’s absurd,” U.S. Ambassador David Wilkins told The Associated Press. “For us to be on a list like that is just ridiculous.”

He said the U.S. does not authorize or condone torture. “We think it should be removed and we’ve made that request. We have voiced our opinion very forcefully,” Wilkins said.

A spokesman at the Israeli embassy said Israel forbids torture.
“Israel’s Supreme Court is on record as expressly prohibiting any type of torture. If Israel is included in the list in question, the ambassador of Israel would expect its removal,” spokesman Michael Mendel said.

Asked why the two countries had been put on the list, a spokesman for Bernier said: “The training manual purposely raised public issues to stimulate discussion and debate in the classroom.”

The government inadvertently released the manual to lawyers for Amnesty International who are working on a lawsuit involving alleged abuse of Afghan detainees by local Afghan authorities, after the detainees were handed over by Canadian troops.

No one from Amnesty was immediately available for comment.

Under “definition of torture” the document lists U.S. interrogation techniques such as forced nudity, isolation, sleep deprivation and blindfolding prisoners.

It also mentions the U.S. detention facility at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, where a Canadian man is being held.

The man, Omar Khadr, has been in Guantanamo Bay for five years. He is accused of killing a U.S. soldier during a clash in Afghanistan in 2002, when he was 15. Canada has long publicly said it accepts U.S. assurances that Khadr is being treated humanely.

One of Khadr’s lawyers, Dennis Edney, said the document shows Canada says one thing publicly but believes something else privately.

“Canada was well aware that Omar Khadr’s allegations of being tortured had a ring of truth to it. Canada has not once raised the protection of Omar Khadr when there are such serious allegations,” Edney said. “What does that say to you about Canada’s commitment to the rule of law and human rights. It talks on both sides of its face.”

Other countries on the watch list include Syria, China, Iran, Afghanistan, Mexico and Saudi Arabia.

The foreign ministry launched the torture awareness course after Ottawa was rapped for the way it handled the case of Canadian engineer Maher Arar, who was deported from the United States to Syria in 2002.

Arar says he was tortured repeatedly during the year he spent in Damascus prisons. An official inquiry into the affair showed Canadian diplomats had not been trained to detect whether detainees might have been abused.

Adam put this thread up with very little information, except that he’s running through a jungle somewhere. I think he’s doing this in lieu of the picture of the day. He puts the picture up and will give us a subtle clue. I am determined to believe that the clue in this Guyana story is the jungle.

I wonder if the killing down south has anything to do with that Marine? Maybe he was moving back north trying to stay ahead of the FBI. That’s just speculation, obviously… -Rod-

Comment by Karen T

Could be the marine, but with the death penalty on his shoulders now, would be better if he stayed in Mexico and hope for extradition. Mexico won’t extridite unless the death penalty is off the table for the criminal. But yeah, mayne he is hopping back across because of the sitings in Mexico.

Comment by Karen T

This is video of the Guyana Jungle, boring video, I don’t think this is what Adam means when he’s runing through a jungle in Guyana. I picture him with a bandana across his forhead, machete in hand swiping down the brush to make a path with Nora and Eric in tow.

Illegal airstrip found in Corentyne River area
On December 10, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) discovered a large illegal airstrip on December 10 in the Corentyne River area some 80 miles upriver from the Orealla Village. This discovery apparently has disrupted a wide-scale illegal narcotics operation in the Corentyne area. About a mile from the airstrip, the troops also found an abandoned camp where a stock of food supplies and a generator were apparently deliberately burnt by the occupiers.

Carl, before this blog, I would see Adam doing live reports and Steve Centanni doing live reports on FNC. I always paid close attention. But no matter how many 1-5minute live reports they did, it was never enough information on the subject they were covering. This is like reading a book vrs watching a movie that was made from a book. must have been the lack of illumination as Adam had when he was on the plane–

Mitt and Monica Lewinsky’s ex boyfriend’s wife running for President– ( I received an email with a bumper sticker which had this one written on it- and I posted it on the Who Do You Love– KT liked it) :D

Anyhow, Ken is laying on the couch- watching college football- fatty Tomasa is right there next to him– they are fed, warm, and comfortable– only in America!!!!

I am headed over to Venezuela to see what is going on there– see you in a few

teach the illegals how to fight– we might be needing them– the price they pay for being here- :D

I am more worried about the external now than the internal– besides that I am a hypocrite because I hang out with illegals–

I just saw another disturbing video- by Rebeca– Caracas Nine– Stephen Baldwin is my Patriot now!!!!

Comment by Susan- Phx- AZ

Adam is a Patriot– his presence there caused quite a stir with the good people– they are so grateful he went there — there are articles from reporters begging the countries to please do something– and one guy like Adam did so much in such a few days–

My hat goes off to Adam– stand and clap– :D

Persona non grata— Don’t forget to see Cristina’s post– the one posted with you being stuck at the airport—-

Comment by Susan- Phx- AZ

Tammy–

I live in Az– I will set up camp at the border and let McCain go deal with the whacko’s– the illegals will beg to want to go back home if they see me there- I will screen them– are you here to work or here to deal drugs, murder, and rape? :D

Comment by Karen2

Susan,

I believe you!

Besides, McCain has ‘heard’ the uproar of the people on his immigration plan. It is back to the drawing board for congress to come up with a reasonable plan.

Comment by Tammy

If you need any help at the border let me know. Derek and Rod aren’t the only one’s who know how to shoot a gun.

He has definitely changed his perspective– but you can’t just wipe out the whole thing here right now– it takes time— too many of them– I am surrounded by them–I live in El Mirage– and do you think I want to see these people lose their homes- their jobs? No way– Since it is already a mess, the alternative is to control it now—

Persona non grata–
never mind– I think you saw Cristina’s post– you may not have posted to her directly back here visibly, but I am sure you saw her– her tone read nice on her post– so polite-

Here’s a reasonable plan: GET OUT! Too many good, honest folks have come through the right way and it is insane to give anyone amnesty.

The other day my husband had to transport a Latino child from home to preschool and back again. On the return trip I road with my husband to spend some time with him. My husband has served this nation through our military for over 15 years and is still doing so. As he got out to escort this young child back into his home we both noticed a sticker on the back window of the family car.

It was of a goat urinating on AMERICA!!! My husband looked at the sticker, looked at it again and then gently put his hand on the back of the Latino boy so that he could make sure the little boy didn’t fall on the ice in the drive way.

These people are getting a FREE education for their child in the very country they want to pi** all over!!!!!!!!

First I wanted to kick somebody’s arss then I wanted to just cry because I can’t believe my husband is such an awesome man.

NO AMNESTY………………..GO FRED THOMPSON!!

Oh Tammny,

that makes me mad! I did not and do not support McCain on is immigration plan of last year. Actually, I am pretty unforgiving about it. Sorry Susan.

Lived in Ca for over 16 years. Part of my job was to meet with people in accidents. You cannot imagine the number of people who were living under false ID papers. The fraud was rampant. My position is illegal aliens – not illegal immigrants. To me, the first thing that needs to go is “anchor baby”. Secondly, pressure on employers and government to have a program to properly ID individuals seeking work. Thirdly, more border control – and, I mean real control. Give the Border Control the tools, manpower and authority to do their job.

watch your backs a bit?

Hello— every loving person in Venezuela was posting left and right about Eva Gollinger and others demanding you to be gone–

I was even wondering if at the airport, if you were going to be carted off the plane– The US Embassy has no control over whackos–

I am trying to think of that book from about the KGB when they took the journalist in Russia and just basically tortured him? Any clues? A book my dad gave to me to read when I was in my teens-

Talk about alarm– I was freaking out– I even wandered over to Greta’s asking if there had been any news from you–

Comment by Tammy

Still not understanding the whole screening bloggers thing. You’ll have to type slower I can’t read that fast………hahahahaha

Anyway, I didn’t know that you just clicked on your names to get info……….I feel so technically savvy right now!! Thanks Jen.

I went over to Greta’s yesterday for a hot second on the open wire thingy……..wow.

Anyway, some woman asked why you don’t hear more in-depth stories about the Muslim taxi driver who shot his two daughters and left them for dead in his taxi as an honor killing.

Some idiot went off on her for being a racist and then somehow got all of her personal info (full name, residence etc) and posted it all over the blog site.

How do they do that?

And Adam – why don’t we hear about it more? Why are we so focused on the Mexican Marine and not much on the two girls that died in an honor killing? Is it because it’s a Muslim thing? Know you’re busy trying to stay alive and all in some jungle but just wondering anyway.

McCain for President—

Comment by Tammy

Rod – went to your website……..cool. What’s up with the colored balls – does that have some kind of significant meaning or is the guy just trying to get attention.

Susan – your John McCain comment at the end of your last blog made me LOL.

Good night Adam.

Comment by Karen2

Tammy,
I think the reason it is not talked about as much, is that they know it was the father and he is hiding.

I heard the father shot the girls because of their “western ways” and wanting to date non-Muslim men. This killing came on the heals of a similar one in Canada.

Very tragic. Makes me want to get on my soap box about assimilating into the country in which one lives……i.e. American Culture if you want to live here.

p.s. Some of Greta bloggers are not for the faint of heart – can get nasty over there.

Tammy–

I think persona non grata leaves the sensationlism to the others– he did touch a bit on Chester the molester and David Copperfield and OJ– But I, in my perception, think he is more of a reporter for the bigger conflicts– environmental issues, extenal– although, he played ball and I as sure the Bonds thing was of major interest to him because he played ball al el natural!!!!

And he has to maybe report within what is given to him? How does that work, Adam?

Comment by Susan- Phx- AZ

Muslims, terrorists, Chavez, Castro, Eva Gollinger—
McCain for President

Comment by Tammy

K2 – Preach it!! I totally agree

Susan – that makes sense to me. I guess it just bothers me that (like Rod said earlier) somehow we are going to be surprised about the truth?? Even if Adam doesn’t report on these kinds of issues perhaps he could get someone motivated (hint hint)

And SREW the political correct crap – that is (in my mind) one of our biggest downfalls.

Tammy,

Just some guy getting attention I guess. He’s an “artist” I suppose. I liked the silliness of it so grabbed the pic :)

Susan: Yes i was sleeping, or trying too.

Adam: I’ve had cameras, i just don’t take photos often. Not sure why not, it’s probably because i stay in the same area most of the time. When i travel i tend to take more photos, but still not that many. Normally i’m too involved to record the moment.

Comment by Karen2

Susan,

Don’t know about the VP yet. Plus, that will be upto whoever wins the nomination.

If it is McCain, then I think he needs to side with someone who is more focused on the economy and carried a stronger illegal immigration stance. Some time back, it was rumored our governor, Tim Pawlenty (state of MN) was supporting McCain. So, it could be somebody who the nation does not know!

Pawlenty did just come out with a proposal for stronger positions against illegals.

http://www.startribune.com/politics/11757591.html – this link discusses the rumors of a McCain/Pawlenty ticket.

We’ll start to narrow down the options after Super Tuesday (or, we could always support Rod for position of VP)

Comment by Kathy in Texas

I heard a rumor of McCain/Liberman. Not sure if the person who told me knows more or less than I do though.

K2,
My sons shoot in 4 H shooting sports. I grew up shooting, it is a lot of fun. We had a rash of home invasions in our small town. I said more than once loudly if they came into my house they be prepared to die, I don’t aim to wound I shoot to kill. There were homes near me broken in, but not mine and my DH works shift work. At the time my dad made me learn to shoot I was so ungrateful, but now I am so glad. I have very little fear, that and the fact I am just a hot head.

hello big shot reporter
the airport where you landed is not in the capital of Guyana. repeat is not in the capital of Guyana. you landed approx. 26 miles south of the capital in a place called Timehri. get your facts straight before you mis.inform

Comment by Karen2

Kathy Texas,

The McCain / Liberman ticket has been rumored a lot. I think since Liberman gave his endorsement to McCain. Although I think this would be an attractive ticket – I can’t see the Republican Party go for it. The only way I see this happening is if they ran under the Independent Party.

As for shooting, I would love to learn. But, have terrible eye hand coordination – you should see me trying to type this :)

I think it would be wise for anyone to learn how to handle a firearm.

Just look at Venezuela, Chavez took away the right to own weapons. So now only the government – military can own guns. NOT good.

Message to Congress / Supreme Court – Don’t be messing with the 2nd Amendment.

(hope this doesn’t repeat – tried once and lost the post)

Comment by Dawne

“don’t even realize we have reached the capital city of Georgetown until the wheels touch down on a hard landing. ”
What a twisted story, there are no airports in Georgetown, Guyana’s Capital. The Airport is many miles maybe (30) from Georgetown. If it is night, raining and no moon, what do you expect if not darkness. Things in every country are different , so please no sensationalism or misrepresentations about my country.
