Airports…Lovely Airports
I have been meaning to post this for a while, but since we have spent some serious time in airports the last 6 months and in specific, the last few weeks, I had to start this post. Sky Harbor here in Phoenix isn’t one of my favorites. First you have to go 30 miles away to get the rental car, or so it seems, then the signage is very inadequate. Plus you’ve got two different sides to pick people up…the place can get real frustrating. San Francisco’s airport has some issues getting to your rental car and Las Vegas has a new car terminal like Phoenix….too far away also. So….I have decided to list my top airports here stateside, we’ll talk about international at a later time. Give me your best, worst, or what you like. Here are my favorites…yeah, I know they are smaller and in no particular order: Sacramento, Tucson, New Orleans, Salt Lake City.

Hi Adam!!!!
You are right about Sky harbor. I live here and it is a terrible airport.
While you are here you might want to try and eat at a place called Cowboy Ciao and ask for the “Stetson salad.”
It will certainly make your stay a better one.
Would love to see you this week and just hope our paths do cross.
For Now, Montana……..living in Apache Junction, AZ.
Tampa — super and getting better
Long Beach Airport………its old art deco, simple to get in and out. has local and international flights. It’s such a simple design that it works! ever since the 1940s!!!
Oklahoma City. Expanding, but still user friendly.
Kansas City is easy Adam!
Montana……we have dear friends (snow birds) that live in Apache Jct.!
Rental cars available at terminal in OKC. Easy access, across street from terminal, walking distance.
I did Phoenix in November-long lines for rental car and yes, long bus ride to get there. So we signed up for Rapid Rez with Budget for our next trip there in June.
I like Tampa - car rental in the airport is a great feature!
Best: I like the airport in Maui, because when I got there I was in Paradise!
It is also my worse, because on the day we were leaving and the plane was leaving the gate everyone was making a big fuss about something as they looked out the window… It was my suitcase, laying on the ground. So we had a little delay on takeoff.
When we got home and waited for bags in baggage claim, there was a big cheer from everyone..it toppled out first.
Adam
How about FAT (Fresno Air Terminal) Hear everything is right there and available - True or False???
How about Denver? It took years to build.
Love Hollywood-Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena airport … Oops, it’s Bob Hope Airport … Only cause it was 10 minutes from where I used to live … But, when I was in jr high school & there was hot weather & the windows were open, the teachers would have to stop everything til the planes passed by …
HATE HATE HATE SeaTac … Too far away … Horrible traffic on the 5 to get there … Signage is bad to get onto the hwy that takes you to the airport … Add in the construction for the bloody light rail … It’s a nightmare … I was there in October and they had such a tiny sign to point you to the parking structure & an even smaller “hole” in the construction walls to get into the garage … I wound up being in the wrong lane & had to go all the way around the loop to get back to the parking garage (because no one was letting anyone change lanes) … Security can be extremely rude at the drop-off lanes (shooing you out before you’ve even gotten in the car, if you’re switching drivers) …
My husband and son flew into Salt Lake City in October and then into Casper, WY for a hunting trip.
When they arrived in Casper…no luggage. Lost in Salt Lake. That means no hunting clothes or guns. At least there was a Walmart on the way to buy some clothes. The ranch was 1.5 hours away from the airport. The folks at Casper airport ended up delivering the located luggage and guns the next day to the ranch, so Kudos to them for that.
Sorry—all my stories seem to be complaints about the people that work at these places..I’ll go look for the complaint department.
I only know McCarran, LaGuardia, Kennedy and Newark. So I can’t comment because they being International
But if I was able to comment, I wouldn’t have very nice things to say.
OK-I have another - DWF; Dallas Fort Worth. Too Big, my sister came to pick me up, I sat outside and waited 1.5 hours for her as she drove around and around and around. The security guard was keeping an eye on me since I was there so long. He finally approached me and at the same time my goofy sister finally pulled up.
Where do I go to complain about family? LOL
I don’t fly much, but I like Jacksonville..I live close and have had good experiences flying in and out of there.
Sky Harbor is difficult, and Adam make sure to NEVER park in the loading/unloading area outside just for a sec to run inside, even if they tell you to. My husband got a ticket for doing exactly what an airport worker told him to do…the police are anxious for “Tourist money”.
Dallas was a really nice airport, though they kept moving our gate which was a pain.
Adam–
You didn’t ask about cost. $$ Guess where the nations most expensive is?
Yep-mine. Cincinnati; which by the way is really in Kentucky. This is where you will pay the highest amount for a ticket.
DFW is an easy pickup but not so to take off. Austin has a pretty easy newer airport.
Jen: At least the Wyomingites were nice!
The one that sucks is the Seattle Airport– they lost Ken there–
and ditto to Sky Harbor– you have to take a shuttle to rent a car– as my cousin has had to do this twice when he and his family paid me a visit–
Adam– posting this in all your new threads-
NFL Experience- from the internet and phone call- next one is Thursday and it starts at 3:00-
Dallas/Fortworth Airport is a lot of walking– try that with a broken foot!
O’Hare airport were extremely accommodating to us–
Max–
:D
That’s right–so you will fit right in.
I may have to take up that hobby to come visit you.
Aeropuerto Internacional de la Ciudad de México— zoo too-
well it was- you would know better Adam- as you have been there recently–
The airport in Puerto Vallarta was nice–
I sure don’t know how you do it…
I used to be a traveling District Trainer … and I hated the whole airport/car rental deal…
(especially b/c I was all alone)
UGH..
I wouldn’t go back and do that for all the money in the world….
LV airport is a pain, I admit…
it’s a pain just to drop people off at the airport… they need to do something about that…
there are so many people crossing and it can take forever to get to the other side.
We need little stop lights like they do in Oakland.
Jen: I really want to get Lynn Chenney’s book about growing up in wyoming. I need to learn how to hunt, it’s illegal here.
I think I need skis … or a snowmobile … I’ve got like 6 inches of snow here …
Twas another Puget Sound Convergence Zone snow storm …
Anybody got opinions on the airport in Wichita?? My folks are talking of goin there in June … Need pointers …
I hate to say this, but I haven’t flown in 25 years
The last time I flew was in the early 80’s and even flying in and out of LAX was no sweat. You reported for your flight 20 MINUTES before departure and away you went. Being in uniform actually helped back then. Flying in and out of Van Nuys was even better. Van Nuys, being (or was?) an Air National Guard base as well as a civilian strip, made it a natural for my flights since I often was on military craft. Back then I invariably flew in the jumpseat in the c*ckpit doorway too, both on Continental’s flights as well as the military’s.
On the otherside, Denver was kind of a pain if I had to fly in and out of it since it was an hour’s drive from home. COS (Colorado Springs Municipal Airport) was dual use, served by the city and by Peterson AFB. I either had to walk from the barracks to the AFB terminal a block away or drive 4 miles to get to the Continental terminal. Either way, same thing, just get there 20 minutes before the flight leaves.
*-> I think the only time I had trouble with a flight was on one from LAX to San Antonio. Man, I didn’t get out of Texas for 3 months!
Time’s change, and as with most things, not for the better. -Rod-
Easiest airport to get in - out - car rental - Palm Springs.
Other easy airports - Minneapolis / St. Paul, Portland.
Pain in the dupa - Atlanta, Dallas, Detroit
K2–
I forgot about Minneapolis/St. Paul– but that has been a long time ago– I lived in Minneapolis for about a year– left in the winter–
I was just looking at my passport from 1957–
Last flight for me was Seattle–
Susan,
definitely a good time to leave here.
One of these days, i will travel to warm parts of the country during the cold season……
Susan,
You really need to get a new passport
K2–
You crack me up– I was just emailing someone about how cool you, Jen, Patty, Terri and a few others are– they were asking me about blogging–
You know you can always stay with me– Your presence is always welcome!
xxxxx
I would have to say my favorite is Tampa too.
I know we are not talking about international yet, but I hate hate hate Frankfort Germany.
Susan,
you are such a sweetheart.
Looks like your search for Adam is going to be a little more work….maybe he could just send you an email to let you know where he will be…
Our next trip will most likely be to Palm Springs to visit Mom-in-law, in late February - a good time to ‘get out of town’.
My favorite airport is the airport whose gentle breezes help guide my craft skyward…..ever higher to a point where I can observe the realities of life from the safety of the heavens……..then have the outstretched concrete fingers lure me back down to return and relive those realities……..for better, or worse.
There are two that I don’t like flying in and out of Dallas (I agree with Adam about going from one terminal to the other) and Atlanta. They are a pain! Oh and Orlando is a pain too!
I do have several that I like…Charlotte, Honolulu and Tampa.
K2–
reference to Adam sending me an email–
I would have loved the opportunity to have met him so all of you could have seen some pictures too– I like to share– there was also a request in my email box asking I get an autograph-
I, personally, don’t do autographs– never have– so this would have been for somene-
but if this meeting does not happen, I will not lose any sleep– Whatever happens, happens–
lol
P.S. K2-
For the record, given my excitement on the other thread, I am NOT into begging– I have my dog for this– and she does enough of it–
Susan,
too funny - looks like Tomaso (sp?) will have to go with you, then. Or, I can just beg for you.
K2, at your service.
K2–
lol - Tomasa– (a) words ending in -a- in Spanish, usually is feminine– as-o- is masculine–
there you are for a quick lesson in grammar- lol
Susan,
Gracias.
