It is hard to imagine, but a city government, Berkley California, in this country has come out and attacked our military with contempt for those military men and women who protect our safety and our freedom’s. They are saying our military men and women should be silenced and shunned.

I spent twenty years serving in the Marine Corps. To read about such really upsets me. I do not understand the thought behind such thinking. Many of my fellow Marines have lost their lives defending the right of safety and freedoms for our citizens.

I was hoping when I heard of this it would only be another “SNOPES”. But, no, after reading the attachment of their agenda I find the article was true. I feel very sad that we have such a divided group of people. I have one thing to say God Bless America for having such devoted young men and women who serve us.

I totally agree with the comment :“If the city can’t show respect for the Marines that have fought, bled and died for their freedom, Berkeley should not be receiving special taxpayer-funded handouts,” . What a bunch of low life morons!!! I wish I lived closer so I could take the stand in front of them and spit in their faces!! If they dont like it….MOVE!!!

I think all Federal funding and Federal grants to Berkeley, San Francisco and Santa Cruz should be withdrawn. I also think ‘Fleet Week” should be moved to another place. Why should we bring money into a place that is so unpatriotic?

I am livid. I have a son who spent 21 years in the Air Force and retired two years ago, three brothers who all served in the Armed Forces, one in Vietnam. Uncles who served in the Calvary,
WWI, WWII and even some who fought at Gettysburg. They were heros and kept our country safe.
I want our government to stop all funds to the City of Berkeley. My son who spent 21 years in service to his country was born in California. We lived in that state for more than 25 years. I won’t even go to California for a visit.

Berkeley has always been a drug induced, wacky city but it has gone too far this time. I will do everything I can to get as many people to write against them. The sad part of all of this is the fact
that if we were attacked, our troops they are trying to remove from their city would have to defend them. It is their job. It is not my job, however, and I intend to say only nasty things about that city along with San Francisco and Oakland. They are a poor image of what our country stands for. When people hear I use to leave in Southern California, they always ask where would be a good place to visit in California and I say, go to another state you would not like California, especially
Northern California but if you have to visit California, go to the Southern part. When they ask why, I tell them about Berkeley, Oakland and San Francisco and many of them do have soldiers in their families and then I have recruited a few dozen more to take up the cause of slamming these cities. My next call and email will now be sent to my Congressmen and Senators. Stop the funding of
these cities in particular Berkeley.

Code Pink represents the scum of the earth, and the dispicable support by the City Council is one of the most outrageous and cowardly acts I can think of. These people are so consumed with hate that they need to be treated for what they are — mindless idiots and irrelevant. That the very same military who protects them, protects this great country of ours should be subjected to such treatment at the hands of those who are most likely effite snobs with very little understanding of the real world, is, at the very least, ludicrous. I would encourage everyone planning a trip to California to avoid, at all costs, the town of Berkeley, along with any eating establishments, hotels, and motels. DeMint is correct all federal funding should be stopped. I would love to hear the thoughts of those runnung for the presidency on this subject. My guess is none of them have the backbone to stand with DeMint.

It has long been known that Berkeley is “special”. Really, there are some very astute “free thinkers” and I respect that. I even respect the Code Pinkos right to protest. But what the residents of Berkely don’t understand, is the reason they are allowed such freedom is because the military have pledged their lives to protect those freedoms. Jim DeMnt is on the right track. If they don’t want government supported programs, they don’t get the funding. Berkeley has always suffered from a Kumbaya mentality. They have no concept of the price of freedom. It certainly isn’t free. I hope Sen. DeMint is successful in rescinding the earmarks allocated to this ungrateful city. I am a mother and a wife I live in Casper Wyoming. I just finished paying my taxes yesterday and I don’t want any of the money I and my husband worked so hard for going to this un-American. prideful, and crazy city. I don’t feel that we should support with tax payers money a city that doesn’t share equally in the Work. I seem to remember a fable about a chicken that worked the fields, cut the wheat, ground the wheat and made the bread. The chicken had many want to enjoy the bread, but no one to help in the work. I would dare say “let them put their money where there mouth is”. If my son wants to join the military to protect and serve, I support him. These people are wacko’s and I hope they loose funding. If they don’t want to be citizens then they should just seceed. Its not like they want to contribute anyhow. Somehow I think the rest of us wouldn’t even notice.

This action by the city council and mayor of the “Peoples Republik of Berkeley” comes as no surprise. I’m a former resident of that Socialist enclave. At the time I lived there, the mayor and some of the city council were members of the SWP, (Socialist Workers Party), which was what the Communist party called itself at the time. It seems little has changed since I had the good fortune to leave that Garbage Dump of a city.

I completely agree with the plan outlined by Senator DeMint. I live about 45 minutes east of this hell hole (grew up much closer than I currently live). Berkeley once again shows it’s colors at a time when the country should be coming together and supporting the men and woman that have volunteered their lives to protect our rights. If it were not for the Marine Corps and all of our other Armed Forces, they would have been executed for putting such tactics into place. They are clearly out of their minds. If they could put this much energy into helping the homeless and uneducated people in their city and around the Bay Area it would make a huge difference to the area, our state, and our country. The Senator is correct in taking there monies away , and I applude and salute the Marines for standing there ground I would not expect any thing less. I am a Retired US Marine. I think Berkly people ought to get a life.

I support the Berkeley City Council’s right to ask for the departure of the U.S. Marine Recruiting Station. I also believe that the federal govornment does have some responsibility to respond to the demands of its constituencies. I believe Senator Jim Demint’s idea is on track.

First, we should pull out the Marine Recruiters. This should be followed immeadiate removal of ALL federal offices in Berkeley. The citizens of Berkeley can receive federal services in offices in San Fransisco or other surrounding communities. In addition all federal earmarks should be withheld from Berkeley and they should be barred from application of grants from federal agencies.

Next, we invite municipalities across America to follow Berkeley’s lead and respond in kind to their requests. If city councils proceed with the same enthusiasm as Berkeley’s, I believe we can eliminate the deficit in short order.

When Berkeley decide they want to share in the federal spoils, they can do so with a simple appology and an open arm embrace of the Marine Recruiters.

Glad I don’t live in Berkley. While it might not be the want for those who live there, it is a reality that we live in a world that has always required a military presence to sustain any society in the way in which the majority of its citizens want it. In my lifespan, the majority of military personnel I have known are respectful of everyone…none the matter. I am very disappointed that the individuals in Berkeley’s government who choose this course of action could not rise above one issue and see that is because of those who have enlisted in our military that they have the right to say anything without persecution. In my opinion, they are the persecutors.

I was so disappointed to the City of Berkley. My husband and I was even planning to go visit the place this summer to check on USC- Berkley and we want to send our daughter there. And by the way, my husband is in the Navy and when I learned about what the City did to the Marine Recruitment, I just felt crying and I finally cried when I started reading all these comments. I came from a different country and I could say how lucky this country is for having so much brave people who put aside all their personal lives to serve us and our country. Being married to a military personnel, I know how much sacrifices we have been going through to serve each and every of you and it’s a big ashame for Berkley council not to even appreciate what these great men and women have been giving us. FLESH AND BLOOD!!!!! Obviously, still not enough for them. After this incident, I lost my momentum to even send my daughter to Berkley. My daughter adores her Father eventhough he’s been away from us for alway 6 years now due to his duty ro serve our Country.

I am a retired Navy officer and sent a letter to every one of my representatives urging them to support Sen DeMint’s legislation. EVERYONE who disagrees with Berkeley’s idotic decision should do the same. Remember, it was the US Military (the Continental Army), and our Founding Father’s who gave us, the media, and the Berkeley City Council, the freedoms we now enjoy.

My grandfather who, seved in the Navy during WW2 once told me that “America has not had it’s fae slapped hard enough yet.” I guarantee these punks who shun the military would be begging for the Marines if we were ever invaded. Their logic goes like this: whenever America is not in a crisis we shouldn’t have a single soldier, but whenever we get attacked, it is time to blame the soldeirs for not defending us. I swear, if Americans lost every freedom for about six months or so, and we could have all the terrorists come over and start cutting off people’s heads, and killing them just because they aren’t Islamic, I personally guarantee that all these idiots would have a whole new game face. The one thing that in my heart I know is right, (but I wrestle with in my emotions whenever I read such debasement as this) is that they want to destroy America, and they want to live with all it’s freedoms, but they don’t want to make the sacrifice. Statement from Mayor Tom Bates on the Berkeley Marine Recruiting Center

I have heard from people all over the country regarding the action taken by the Berkeley City Council regarding the Marines recruiting center.

Let me be absolutely clear that this is not about the men and women who are serving our country in our armed forces. I am a retired U.S. Army Captain and I respect the choice of those who are serving our country.

However, this community strongly opposes the war in Iraq and the foreign policy of the current administration. I believed from the beginning that this was an unjust, illegal, and immoral war of choice.

A year ago, the U.S. Marines established a recruiting office within a few blocks of our local high school, community college and university. Since then, community members who oppose the war in Iraq have been exercising their free speech in protesting the presence of the Marine recruiters. Pro-war protestors have also attended to exercise their free speech rights.

On January 28th, the Berkeley City Council took action to waive the permit fee for anti-war protestors one afternoon a week. Any group, whether pro- or anti- war, can obtain such a permit. In addition, the City Council indicated its desire for the Marine recruiting station, as a visible symbol of the war, to be relocated.

I understand that there are people across the country that may not agree with this action but it is the Berkeley City Council’s responsibility to represent the will of the people of Berkeley.

I also understand that the language proposed to the Council did not adequately differentiate our respect and support for those serving in the armed forced and our opposition to the Iraq war policy. I will be working with the Council to clarify that language at our next meeting.

I hope that our country will end the war in Iraq soon and bring our troops home safely. We are truly fortunate to live in a country that can tolerate and accept a range of views and opinions.

As a VETERAN of 16 years, with several years of combat experience, I believe I have earned the right to speak on this subject. Personally I find the comments towards the City of Council of Berkley to be extremely disheartening and based solely on emotion or some misguided belief.

First of all, many of the people responding are merely wrapping themselves in the false flag of patriotism. Correct me if I am wrong, but Iraq did not attack the United States – and yet – we attacked this country and are currently occupying it. To date, I have lost more freedom as a result of the Bush presidency then I have to Iraqis or any terrorists! As such, let me ask – just exactly what freedom is the military securing for the people of this country? If it is so crucial to the American way of life then every male between the ages of 18 – 35 should be required to serve two to fours years in the armed forces. In addition, there should be a mandatory war tax and the fruits of labor should be focused on supporting the war effort. Absent this – the war is merely an excuse for the military industrial complex and the government to expand its sphere of influence.

Hopefully America will one day wake up see our actions for what they are – IMPERIAL ARROGANCE!

Time to get rid of liberal idiots. time for a little uprising. If you can’t appreciate those who have fought and died protecting and preservng our freedom, then you don’t deserve freedom,. you will have to fight and die for it yourself. If you have the guts. freedom is for those who sacrifice for it, not for those who inherit it from the sacrifice of others, and who then turn on those who provided it.

Right on DeMint!

As a wife of a Sgt in the Marine Corps, I am disgusted!! I personally sent an email to the mayors office, which I got off of his website. I truly doubt that he will ever read it, but I really hope he does. I feel if the concern is the “don’t as, don’t tell” policy, they are protesting in the wrong spot. The Marines in that recruiting office did not make the rules and they are not the ones to change it. They are told what to do. It is really sad!! Most of the Marines there did not volunteer to go there either, they were told too. I am really glad to hear the Marines will be staying there even though they are not wanted!! It makes me furious that people like my husband are dying for him or any of the people in that town. I really hope that others are just as disturbed as me and someone is able to change it. I wish I lived close, because I would protest the ones standing out there!! Simper Fi!!

I will be writing my state Congressman to urge him too back up MR. DeMint, in the withdrawl of federal funding to the city of Berkely. If they did not foresee the fallout from the action they decided to take, then Berkely city council needs to lose their funding just out of stupidity on their part.

I spent four years in the Marine Corps, and although this seems like a slap in the face to all service persons, I can assure you, it only makes those Marines at that recruiting office prouder to wear the uniform. Frankly, they have bigger fish to fry, a more pressing and important matter, that of keeping us safe and free. Please, let code pink protest so that the rest of the country can see the true face of ignorance.

I’m not entirely sure how the City of Berkeley came to the conclusion that a federal agency is bound by a municipal ordinance that applies to Berkeley’s hiring practices, but I digress. As a former Marine, as a man, and as an American, I’m sickened by the actions of the Berkeley City Council and the rhetoric of that city’s mayor. (By the way, the action condemning the Marine Corps was passed by a vote of 6-3, not 8-1 as reported by many media outlets. The issue of a parking permit for Code Pink was an 8-1 vote.)

I sincerely hope these officials continue to be re-elected to local offices and remain in the Bay Area so that the rest of the nation isn’t infested with their kind.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Berkeley encourage all
people to avoid cooperation with the Marine Corps recruiting station, and applaud
residents and organizations such as Code Pink, that may volunteer to impede, passively
or actively, by nonviolent means, the work of any military recruiting office located in the
City of Berkeley.

Berkey cannot be allowed to pick what federal office is permited in their town.This is seccession. Take their federal funds and give it to Wounded Warriors and top it off with a fine for contempt.

When I read about this yesterday I searched for the City Council of Berkeley to let them know what clear minded patriotic people think. I do live close enough (thankfully not too close) to these freakazoids to go there and support the Marine’s. My son is currently at boot camp in San Diego for the Marines and I couldn’t be prouder of him. I would support Berkeley to be an independent entity. No Federal funds or help for ANYTHING. How many students get Federal aid? How many are on Welfare? How many get Federal money for what ever? I would’t spend one thin dime in that toilet of a town. Have you ever been there? It’s dirty, smelly and disgusting. This just solidifies my prior opionion of that hell hole.

Bravo, Senator DeMint for your actions. I plan on e-mailing him to give him my thanks. Why didn’t McCain take this up? After all, he’s supposed to be the military man of the day.

I read this story last night and I was outraged by it. I even woke up this morning angry about what I had read and talked to many people at work about it. I was refeshed when I read what Senator DeMint wrote because that is exactly what my thoughts were. I hope that other influential persons take the same stand as he did. I still remember Berkeley back during the Viet Nam days and what they did then and it appears they are doing the same thing again. A short time ago the Marines were not allowed to do a commercial in the City of San Fransico either and that didnt settle well with me either. Seems the entire bay area is just plain out of touch with the men and women who fight for their freedoms. I fully believe we should suspend all federal money to them, boycott anything coming from that city, keep all military people out of that city and the bay area for that matter so that they wont get a single tourist dollar from them. As for all future PAC 10 away games that the California Bears play, the opposing team should invite the Marine Corps Marching Band, Color Guard and Silent drill team to participate in all game activities. Better yet, if they are so self rightious, perhaps they should become a sovern nation and not be a part of the great USA.

Berkeley is a toilet anyway. For all I care they can become independent and never receive any Federal Funds. How many students there have student loan from Federal Funds? How many on Welfare? How many individuals receive federal money for what ever? They are scum! I am close enough to go there and support those Marines. Remove ALL federal funds from any city that sets itself above the Republic. If the idiots in Berkley, who have been on a drug high since the mid 60’s, are so arrogant and unpatriotic then remove all funds. I am writing to my Congressman and Senators to demand all funds be removed from this UNAMERICAN bastion. Perhaps it is time to recreate the House and Senate committees on UNAMERICAN activities. The same applies for any city/town that has declared itself a Sanctuary city.

As a 20+ year retired Marine Gunnery Sergeant, you can imagine my response. The self appointed, so called “intellectuals” often choose to ignore the subject of history in their education process. They think that you can “reason” with those who would kill you. I think a good test of this would be to corral all of these “intellectual derilects” and send them to a combat zone with their liberal lips blazing and see what happens. Another consideration about Berkeley is that perhaps the supply of “real men” has dwindled due to the heavy immasculation exerted by liberal gay politics, and cowardice. The fact is that history has repeatedly demonstrated that “evil triumphs when good men do nothng”. These “sheep” bask in the liberties paid for by others, and then exercise freedom of speech to whine about their “presence”. I think that my beloved Corps should open a base near Berkeley, and expose the population to the “masculine virtues” exemplified by United States Marine Corps.

P.S. They must not have studied latin either, or they would know the meaning of Semper Fidelis.

Those as outraged as I find myself need to direct their energy towards their duly elected Senators and Congressmen. Grass roots “fixes” DO sometimes occur when the populace rises up to express their opinion, coupling it with their vote. Tell all your friends and family, spread the word and inundate the lawmakers with your voice or pen to support Senator DeMint’s Legislation by asking that it be allowed into and through whatever screening is needed and then placed on the Senate floor to be voted upon. It would be appropriate if the Legislation suspends not only “Earmarks” (Pork???) for the Socialist Republic of Berkeley, but ALL federal funding for that Socialist enclave. It should also be added that Federal Troops (and hopefully it will follow on the state level for State Guardsmen) not be allowed to enter that Foriegn enclave to assist with disaster work, riot control, humanitarian work, or to repel any invaders (along with any other concievable use). Once federal funding ceases the “snobs” in Berkeley will soon find themselves living in a location where property values tank, crime is rampant and basic services a luxury. Maybe when they have reached the point of understanding what it feels like to live as a low end third world country then and only then SEND IN THE MARINES, and see what appreciation really is. Federal funding should not be restored UNTIL the entire council has apologized in print, radio, TV, and billboards; visits a VA hospital treating the nations wounded while giving thanks for their actions; hosts an Armed Services Appreciation Day, and finally renounces all treasonous behaviours.
I was born and raised in that state, have served in the Military since 1987 and will not set foot in that state again nor allow one cent of my money to be spent in that state or for any company headquartered out of there until they pull their heads out of their collective rear ends.

I am s US Marine and I am outraged at the audacity of this communist city in America. It’s one thing to protest and have the freedom of speech but this code pink being backed by the city council is treasonous. They should be tried, convicted and hung on main street for their deplorable actions.

Since code pink got a parking space and the right to protest in front of the office, I think we should send the entire 1st Marine Division from Camp Pendleton and Twenty-nine Palms over there to “protest” as well. Let them conduct an urban warfare training exercise throughout the city and treat it them as our old Cold War enemies. Then round up the whole lot of them and turn them over to the French and Iranians.

Thank you, Senator DeMint, for bringing this issue to the U.S. public. Honestly, do the city council members and Berkeley, CA residents support this? Do they really believe that we should shun the young women and men who, unconditionally, serve our country without hesitation or reservation? They should try this…ask themselves whether they could ever measure up. I seriously doubt whether any of them have even the minimum requirements that our U.S. Military personnel possess: morality, leadership and physical qualities — each one of which are unsurpassed in this nation.

We, also, have a daughter who is unimaginably beautiful, extremely intelligent and could choose from anything she wanted as a career . Did that make her pursue anything less than U.S. military service? No!! She’s chosen the U.S. military because she is proud of our country, wants to make a difference and knows that she will be challenged daily — academically, militarily, professionally, and physically — and she will be there, when each of you are “fearful” — to protect you.

I, too, believe that all federal funding and federal grants to Berkeley, San Francisco and Santa Cruz should be withdrawn. I also think “Fleet Week” should be moved from that area. They are, obviously, anti-American and anti-Military. Bill O’Reilly — how about another “boycott”?

I am also shocked by this — although I am not sure why. I am certainly happy I don’t live anywhere near that (appropriately named) garbage dump. Why anyone would want to be represented by such mindless representatives is beyond me. How stupid of an action is it to take on an issue they can’t even control? Nice waste of taxpayers money.

I will also be sure to never visit this foreign city again. It would be helpful if they would secede from the U.S. and support their own desires without assistance from others outside their city. If only…

I support Sen. DeMint. I will write to my own congressmen to ask them to support Sen. DeMint. Berkeley is always a warm bed of Marxism. What will the town do next? Perhaps declare them to be part of Cuba? I don’t want my tax dollars to go there.

This has to be one of the most ridiculous exhibits of left wing, socialist behavior I have ever seen. I hope and pray that the actions of this council do not go unpunished. I would love to see any and all federal funding for this community stripped immediatly. The lost revenue should then be recaptured via increased taxation of the citizens of this community. This is America, the rights that allow these individuals to make such statements were gained and are protected via the blood, sweat and tears shed by generations of soldiers and their famlies.

I recomend that Code Pink stage a series of protests in San Diego, particullary MCRD San Diego.

When they finish there I would love to invite them to San Antonio Texas, I would have to assume that these protests would be quite short and would definately increase business for local emergency rooms.

I can’t express the outrage I felt when I heard about the Berkley City Council’s resolutions. I am the granddaughter, daughter, wife, and mother of military members, Navy, Air Force and Army. I am also an Air Force veteran. I pray daily that my husband and children will be kept safe in the performance of their duties and now I’ll pray that that duty never takes them to California.
I will be contacting my congressmen urging their support for Senator DeMint’s proposal to cut federal funds to Berkley. The money taken from Berkley would be better spent on our troops serving in Iraq and Afganistan (maybe some could even be allotted as hardship pay to those stationed in Berkley).
I encourage everyone to contact their own congressmen and ask that they support Senator DeMint’s propsal, as well.

After reading what the Berkley city council decided to do, I have never had a more immense feeling of disapointment. First of all, isn’t Berkley supposed to be a place of tolerance and free thinking?? Secondly, I agree that the residents and council members have the right as US Citizens to voice their opinions and their opposing view to world events. I also think that if they had to endure a loss of the freedoms that they take for granted, they would think differently. An equally big disappointment is former service members who likely have seen and who apparently have lost their sense of what liberty and freedom, right and wrong are. I think that most Americans know that their freedoms will not be taken from them, I hope the citizens and officials in Berkley can figure out why. My initial outrage has tempered slightly now, and I support cutting federal funds to Berkeley, period.

But I am thinking of a demonstration for SUPPORT of the USMC and other branches of the military be staged in Wacko-Ville (aka Berkeley).

Think about it? IF say a few 100 thousand people stayed around Berkeley,( Remember folks no money to them) and we meet and demonstrate at the city council building, the mayor’s house, and the councilmen/women’s house to show our support for the people who walk the line for use! Give them a taste of their own medicine.

However, it would not surprise me to see them be bigoted and refuse to give a permit for this and squash the 1st amendment rights cause they don’t like it?

I spent 22 years in the USAF. This is the type of garbage that California has been known for more than 40 years. The City of San Francisco, not to far from Berkley, won’t let the historic battleship Iowa open as a museum. Now, Berkley is playing with themselves and their Code Pink butt buddies.

They should be investigated, charged, and made to defend their anti-American actions in a court of law, as well as the court of public opinion. Too often, these cowardly denizens reap tons of attention with their outrageous behaviors, knowing that there are no consequences for their deeds. This needs to change.

I am a veteran of over 30 yrs and a Former Marine. I think it is disgusting that only one sitting Senator wants to take this up. I agree that all Federal Dollars should be removed from the city. They are arrogant and ignorant.I have written to the city lawyer and city mayor and told them that they are dead wrong to go around inciting a riot infront of a Marine recruiting Station. I would ask them to come on TV and tell America why they think they are still deserving of Taxpayer money.

I sent the Mayor of Berkeley an email yesterday voicing my disgust with him and his cronies. Never got a reply, but I did’nt think I would. Isn’t that space in front of the recruiting station reserved for a TANK? Why don’t the Marines park one there, after doing donuts in the main square. And then allow the city to repair the pavement at THEIR expence.

As a Marine who has served for 11 years, the decision by the Berkeley council is hard to swallow. I have spent my adult life serving my country, not because I want to kill people, but for the Marines that have gone before me and served. We do not chose where we will be sent, we leave that to the politicians. We join to protect our country against all enemies, foreign and domestic. Does Berkeley protest against the Marines who helped our country during Katrina, the Indonesian Tsunami, or most recently the Bangladesh cylcone? It all boils down to uniformed, igonorant people who have probably never stepped foot off of American soil. We are spoiled as a nation, and as such we will have spoiled brats. The Marines have been around for over 220 years, and it really doesn’t matter if we leave Berkeley. Brave men and women will continue to serve the Marines, not for the uniform, not for war or peace, not for recongition, but because we believe in the values that this country stands for. We will give our lives to protect those values. Even if those values allow ignorant people to discriminate against us.

As usual the left leaning haven called Berkeley has mistaken gratitude for attitude and copped one. Not a surprise, but a shame. I agree with pulling EVERY federal dollar out of that town, and then maybe after that, the Governor could consider some of the state support as well. They can either be a part of us, or apart from us – - – let’s let them consider the consequences of ignoring the freedom bought by the blood of our military by living “on their own” for the nanosecond it will take for them to cry foul.

I agree with all of the above. “Government money” belongs to the taxpayer. I am fed up with all these earmarks and wish they would bring back the “Golden Fleece” awards that Proxmire was responsible for. Another comment I totally agree with is moving Fleet Week out of San Francisco because of their intolerance toward the military. I say we need to convey our thoughts to Feinstein, Matsui, Boxer, and Pelosi.

I agree with pulling all federal fund support from Berkeley; however I believe this is a passive action such as the ecomonic sanctions taken against Iran. I would encourage a more aggresive approach such a thorough auditing by the IRS every year until they die, extensive drug testing of all local federal and state employees, elected officials, professors, and teachers. Further Congress should explore the storage of nuclear waste, seismic and experimental biological testing in the vicinity of Berkeley city hall. In the future, the Marines need to offer a considerable bonus to all retirees willing to locate in Berkeley until these current wackos are in the minority and no longer in power of the city.

I think this was bound to happen at one point or another with this City. Sen. DeMint is doing the right thing. I don’t think we should stop there however; don’t only stop federal funding but state funding as well.

I also respect the rights of Code Pink and the first amendment, regardless of if I think it’s right or not. However a government group, such as a City Council, does not have the right to protest, they have the obligation to insure the rights of EVERYONE. What they are doing is taking the right away from the people in that community to make up their own minds if they want to support these Great States of a United America. They are saying, “if you want to support the war or any other military function, you are not welcome here”

I believe ALL FUNDING, State and Federal, should be revoked until all members of the city council have been removed from office and a formal apology has been made to the USMC and all other branch’s of the military. I also encourage everyone to tell their friends, relatives, neighbors , co-workers and anyone else in your life to write their congress men and women and Senators, and if you live in California like myself, the Governor and demanding something be done. Put pressure on our elected officials and remind them that we do elect these people and something of this magnitude will not be forgotten.

I sincerely hope and pray that Sen. DeMint can resend the federal funds earmarked for Berkly. Since the pink commies that are protesting the office have so much time on their hands they should raise the hopefully lost funds Sen. DeMint can resend. Yes they have the right to protest but as a tax payer we should have the right to resend the tax $’s we paid. Giving it to the military is the right thing to do. As my Senator I pray he can accomplish his goal. Yes I said pray, and we need to be allowed to do more, especially in our schools. I served 8 years in the USNavy Submarine service so the military and its men and women are close to my heart.

It also would set a very dangerous precident if we allowed individual municipalities, counties, or states to undermine the federal governments mandate (under the constitution) to provide for the common defense. I think we should pull all federal funding from anything and everything in Berkeley, and since they don’t like the military, pull all DHS funding as well. Furthermore, I would encourage ALL businesses to abstain from doing ANY business with ANY company within the city limits of Berkeley. Putting the pressure on the businesses will in turn put the pressure on the people who will then put the pressure on those cowards on the Berkeley city council. Go for it Sen. Personally, I think that the behavior of the Berkley City Council meets the dictionary definition of Sedition: ‘Conduct or language inciting rebellion against the authority of a state’. However it does not meet criteria that will meet Supreme Court muster. What I would like to see is an amendment to U.S. Code which would make it illegal for persons to physically interfere with the U.S. military in the performance of it’s legal duties. This should also include persons who interfere with DOD’s civilian contractors. There should be meaningful ramifications for individuals who chose to indulge themselves in this manner. Punishing the entire city of Berkley is too wide a broom.

I will pay big bucks to see that Berkley bunch try to throw any Marines out of any
place. Marines please let the women Marines do this job. I’m sure they would consider
it a honer to whip up on that bunch of traitors.

I found it interesting that California’s own elected senators or representatives had any comment about Berkley. I fully agree that Berkley should not receive any federal funds- What would happen to that city if the university funding was also pulled. The City of Berkley is violating the right to free speech in it’s wanting to drive the Marine Recruiters from their city. I believe all federal and state monies should be frozen and the city council brought up on charges of impeding free speech. It makes one wonder if these people who enjoy their free speech right should not spend some time in a country that jail’s such actions. We one country and we are at war like it or not support our troops. After hearing about this…… I became livid, contemptuous and other words I will not say. I live in the Northern California area, and I am embarrassed and ashamed. Pull all and any funding we can from them. While I NEVER want to see another terrorist attack on our soil (but its only a matter of time), if it did happen, I couldn’t think of a place that would welcome radical Islam more. Can you? Bastards!

As far as I’m concerned with Berkeley, San Fransisco etc. the next time something like what happened in 1906 or October 1989 (two major earthquakes) the area should be left on its own unless it changes its ultra-left leaning America hating ways. I wouldn’t hold my breath, though.

I think that Senator Demint has a great idea– just cut the federal funds to this liberal city. The reason they are able to demonstrate is because of our brave military that protects them.

What seems a bit trivial is why the protesters are against the Marines, when that is not where their problem lies, it lies much higher up than that. Do they know what they are protesting? Are they protesting the actions of the Marine Corps. relating to their actions in handling the WOT overseas, or is it the fundamental military presence that they disagree with?

My husband is a Marine and has been for almost 14yrs, he is currently on his second deployment to IRAQ and will be there and away from his family and friends for 13 months so those IDIOTS have the freedom to disrespect our military and country. We are living in California due to being stationed here and cant wait to get out of this state. We are from the south and cant wait to get back because down there they respect the military and our country. My husband has done recruiting duty and we were also in a very non-military friendly city and he excelled at it. These recruiters in Berkeley can overcome this and shove it back in thier faces.

Please take all federal funding away from these people, they dont deserve it.

Support your troops and keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

The Commandant of the Marine Corps has the authority and should declare the City of Berkley as Off-Limits to all Marines if they are forced to move out. And then all other Service Secretaries and Service Chiefs of Staff follow suit and similarly declare the city as Off-Limits. Such declarations by Military Commanders are authorized when the business or locations within an area are deemed unsuitable to a servicemember; either due to the trend of poor business practices with military members, or because the overall climate of that location does not contribute to the standards, health, or welfare of that soldier, sailor, airman, or Marine.

Remove the servicemember from the City; along with her/his economic strength, and watch the city beg for them to return.

Then the Veterans Administration should notify all those servicemembers (active and retired) to withraw from the campus at Berkely if they are receiving that education under the GI Bill.

Foolish and left-wing mindsets that exclude those who fight for our freedoms need to understand the cost of such ill-advised and minority thinking.

This is the most disgusting demonstration I have ever heard of or witnessed. Protest the WAR if you wish but not the Marines or any other branch of the service ….they are doing their job.

Let the Berkley city counsel have their way and make the marines leave, but then cut all federal funding to Berkley and when the next natural disaster hits that area of California let the Berkley city counsel call in “Code Pink” for help.

Not only should all federal funds be cut off from the city, but cities should not be able to

Federal funds should not go to any governent, private group, or person which restricts military recruitment, veteran activities, or uses their activities to make political, social or ideological statements. This does not restrict any individual first amendment rights because there is sufficent private source funding, if they seek it. Cities such as Berkley (CA) have enough local problems to take care of, and should stop claiming they’re speakinf for all of their citizens.

If I remember correctly, a Black U.S. Air Force Recruiter (Name: Moslel or Mobley) was murdered in his office in Berkeley about 1970, by a man shouting “You’re Killing People”. I hear those same words today.

The so-called town of Berkeley is run by a bunch of hypocrites who are protected by the U.S. Armed Forces who the U.S. Marine is a part of. Maybe the Commandant of the United States Marines should warn the Berkeley Mayor and his city council that if they mess with the United States Marines assigned to the United States Marine recruiting office in that city that he will repeat what the United States Army’s General Patton did in Phenix City, Alabama in 1941. “General Patton training troops at Fort Benning Georgia in 1941. Patton personally drove a tank through the “strip” of bars and cat houses across the river at Phenix City Alabama whose residents frequently robbed, beat and even murdered soldiers on weekend pass.” The City Hall in Berkeley is no different than were the 1941 Cat Houses and bars of Phenix City, Alabama.

Senator Demint is doing the right thing and I put my support behind him 100%. Senator Demint, please encourage the president to help you pull our tax dollars away from these left wing loons. I am sickened by this. I have family and friends who have served our country and it is the act of a traitor that does what Code Pink is doing. They should all be shot or hanged as traitors. At the very least, can’t we put them (along with hanoi Jane Fonda, Susan Sarandon, Tim Robins, and the like) on a ship to anywhere (except the US) they want to go. We should cut all federal funding to the University at Berkeley (UC Berkeley). This is one of the big money makers for the city. We can start by freezing payments for 6 months. If they don’t respond with a VERY positive response. We cancel pending contracts and penalize the University AND the city with a 5 year ‘No Government Funding’ fine.
If this is not strong enough, then we should start penalizing the cities that border it to apply regional pressure.

It is outrageous, I felt they should have withheld their federal funding back whe they first started this attack with ROTC, I work as a civilian for the military and couldn’t be any prouder of the men and women who serve. My son is in the National Guard, my older son served 10 years in the Airforce, and my father was retired Airforce. I strongly feel if they suffer from any attacks or have a natural disaster we should not come to their aid. Where are the presidental canidates on this subject, where is ARNOLD? better yet WHERE is MCCAIN?, their all full of it, they don’t want to offend any special interest groups who will support them in the election. If Bush doesn’t speak out against this, then he will truly show his true colors like he did in not supporting the service men accused of killing innocent Iraqi’s and the 2 border agents who are still in jail for doing their job.

I’m sure there are residents of Berkeley who disagree with the City Council’s resolution not to welcome the military recruiters. That being said, the City should allow all views to be expressed, Marines and Code Pink alike, and let democracy take its course. Their passing a resolution to suppress any specific view, shows that they want to forcibly deprive some residents their democratic right to exercise their support for whomever they wish. That’s not what any government within the U.S.A. is supposed to do. They should be ashamed of themselves. As a U.S. citizen, I am certainly ashamed of them.

We owe our Marines a debt of thanks. I suppose what these people who appose the marines recruiting sessions really want is for the U.S.A. to bring back the draft. Do they want to bring back the draft!? These poor souls know not what they do.

The actions of the Berkley City Council are unacceptable. I know it wont happen, but the people in Berkley should be embarrised and vote to remove this city council. But… they do have the right to do this,,,,AND we have to right to speak out and tell them how bad this action is.

I think we also have the right to WITHDRAWL FUNDS from the area, REFUSE TO DO BUSINESS with people / business in Berkley, WRITE to your senator to vote against any support of this area, CANCEL TRAVEL PLANS to this area and in general,,, excercise our right to express our discontent. Our military and those that have served before them have given their lives to give us the right to free speech, the right to vote, the freedoms and safety that we now enjoy everyday. We owe them all of the respect and support we can provide.

I am a strong supporter of “states rights” and the role local municipalities plays in our system of government but there are consequences to the actions of the City of Berkeley. There needs to be a close look at any and all federal funds, in kind programs and federal tax benefits provided to any activity of the City. It doesn’t surprise me what California does. I have my own opinion of a certain group of people, but I will keep that to myself. I would just say if they don’t like “The Home Of the Free”, because of the sacrafices of the Brave, move to China.

For a Berkeley to attempt to give the Marines the “boot” is unconstitutional in my opinion. They need to sit back and think for one second, What if the military was not here? Thank You Senator for standing up for our Marines and all others who proudly wear the uniform. I was considering UC Berkeley as a college option for my son who is graduating high school this year, but they will now loose tens of thousands of dollars in tuition I would have otherwise forked over.

It is appalling and shameful that Berkley and San Francisco receive any kind of government funding whatsoever, when they are so hostile towards those who protect us. I absolutely agree it should be pulled, and they should put more parking spaces for Code pink to park in and then wall in the city.

I agree totally with DeMitt. Our Armed Forces sacrifice daily for the rights of us; U.S. citizens to live in this beautiful, free country. These “few” however think they need to be heard and they do have that right. However the vast majority believe as I do and thank the Armed Forces for the job they do. If they are so unhappy I would hope they leave and find a more suitable environment!

I would like to ask a question of all the presidential hopefuls! “As the possible future Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces, what is your position on Berkeley’s actions against the Marines, and what would your actions be were you in office today?”
I think I know what half of the candidates would say and would honestly like to hear what the other half would say. I think this question would shine a lot of light on what to expect from the next 4-8 years. I would really like to see how quickly they could spin, avoid, or change that question if it were asked live in a debate! And they might earn my respect if they did actually address this question!

The greatest tragedy is good people dying so their small minded “countrymen” are free to openly hate them, without any risk to themselves.

My husband is a screenwriter and I recently moved him away from Hollywood and back up to the beautiful San Francisco Bay Area where I grew up. I am absolutely disgusted by the liberal cesspool that this astoundingly gorgeous city has become. We were thrilled to move away from an industry that has the audacity to always assume its members sit on the far left. I usually leave the political antics to him as he has never been one to shy away from expressing his conservative views. I must admit this Berkeley situation is the straw that just broke this camel’s back! Tell me who to write and where to protest and I am there. Berkeley sits about 20 minutes from the place we call home, but its values could not be further from our own. Doesn’t one need to volunteer to become a Marine in this country? And isn’t it soldiers, such as the Marines, who defend the right for citizens to be able to volunteer to become Code Pink wackos? I really consider myself a moderate, but this has me completely incensed!

San Francisco area disgusts me. We had planned a trip this April and it is now cancelled.

Those members of the Berkeley City Council voting to kick Marines out of the entire city suck (no pun intended). Those high-minded liberals don’t seem to realize they are guilty of discriminating against a specific group of people (Marines) and that is just as illegal as discrimination against gays is illegal. When blacks were being kept out of certain schools in Little Rock, AR the federal government has sent troops to schools to prevent discrimination against blacks. Perhaps troops should be sent to Berkeley to protect and insure the right of any citizen wishing to speak with recruiters to do so. However, withholding federal funds from the city on the grounds that the city’s official policy is discrimination seems to be a better solution. In addition, perhaps the U.S. Justice Department should file a federal discrimination suit against the city.

Good for you Sen. Jim Demint! Not only should all federal funds be withheld, but military support for the city should be withheld in the event of a natural disaster as well.

City Councils all over the US should vote in a statement that protests any of our hard earned tax dollars being channeled to Berkley California!

Just email the city council and let them know how you feel….If their email system gets flooded with enough emails, that may make them realize that they are NOT average Americans who love this country….Also email your folks in Congress and lets get the federal funds OUT of this city! I have never heard of any recruiter forcing a young man or woman to enlist at gunpoint, and they should have the right to state their case in every city in the USA! Freedom of choice is a part of this as well, and our young people should be able to choose freely what they want to do. As far as Code pink goes, what a radical group, so filled with the hate they are preaching against. They are similar to the Westboro Baptist Church in my opinion, that do little but spew hate and filth and call it patriotism…..I for one am proud of each and every young man and woman that has EVER worn the uniform of the United States. I agree with cutting federal funding, etc. The state of California should also react. How much economic benefit do the Corps and other military branches provide to the state? Camp Pendleton, Coronado, San Diego Amphib Base, Twenty-nine Palms, Edwards AFB, etc., etc. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you…

I think anyone who goes to such a great length to dishonor those who have spent their all for us to have the most freedom in the world is a tragedy. Perhaps the Berley City Administration and Governement could be exiled to some other country not of their choosing and see what our military has fought and died for. For me personally, this is a double shame. As a native California born in small town about 90 miles for the bay area and having spent so many great times in what was once a very fun San Francisco , my vitriol is nuclear. What the population of the bay area has done to this once great place to visit, has destroyed many of my personal memories. Haven’t been in the area for 30 years and don’t plan to visit any time soon. Wasn’t it just last summer than a San Francisco politician said that he didn’t believe that this nation even needed a military. Warped mind in my view and gives us all a peek at the kook evironment that exist there today.

Secondly and more importantly, as a Marine sworn to protect this nation while I was in uniform for 26 years, I would have sucked it up and done my duty if I was so ordered, and would given personal energy at a great rate if the bay area had called for help in a disaster, or population unrest or even a terrorist attack. Today, now that I have retired that uniform, I wouldn’t give that area or population one drop of my sweat. You may say that this view is unfair because that there are many good people in this area who may deserve our help at a time of need. I say, they allowed this bay area to be lead down a path they should have recognized and push back 30 years ago.

What about our rights? My tax dollars are spent by someone who does not respect what our soldiers and what our military stands for;all our freedoms..My first opportunity to visit outside the UNITED STATES I was 12 during the 1970’s……I saw how fortunate it was to live in USA, I am so grateful to not live in the abject poverty I saw in some of the countries I was fortunate to visit. I am angry about how most of tax dollars are miused………..We need term limits on the idiots handing out our tax dollars to these people who don’t appreciate where they are fortunate to be. Ship them out to the new country of their choice and revoke their citizenship.

As to the “Liberalist” population of the Berkely and San Francisco areas, one doesn’t have to wonder why they are known as the “Land of the Fruits, Flakes and Nuts” by those of us who still have possession our common sense! As a former Marine Sgt and Vietnam Veteran, I tried to go to the City of Berkeley website to let them know I am outraged and will never again visit or shop in the City of Berkeley. Their website is down. Go figure. Hopefully, Senator Jim Demint can not only take away earmarks, but maybe pursue denying other federal funding. His success may stop some of these cities, like San Francisco, from violating federal laws, such as illegal immigration sancuary.

That’s where Republicans lose the fight, they are too busy working, spending time with their families, going to church, and helping their neighbors to protest, where as the crazies have nothing better to do than complain because they are miserable people. Why else would you spend your free time holding up a sign on a street corner yelling hate speech instead of doing something positive in the community. They refuse to believe that we are no longer in the 1960’s, and our military is now completely made up of brave men and women who have VOLUNTEERED their lives for the better of our country. Liberals hate everything about America and they will stop at nothing to change her. This political season should be a wake up call to conservatives everwhere. The left wing haters and bloggers are actually starting to pull some weight and manipulate policy in the Democratic Party. If we don’t even the playing field with our voices, they will win and America will be changed for the worse. So get out and make yourself heard. I am also outraged by Berkeley’s efforts against the Marine Corps and our military. I’m no lawyer but I see their actions (physically interfering with the military recruitment process) as one step away from treasonable actions, especially during wartime. This is not Vietnam nor the time to “burn bras” in front of the White House, no matter how “Pink” anyone is. I am in complete agreement with Senator DeMint and strongly believe that all federal funding should be withheld from Berkeley – “You scratch my back, I scratch your back.” People (including municipalities) should be held accountable for their actions. Other comments on this issue regarding not holding “Fleet Week” or other federal or military activities in or near Berkeley are also sound and correct. Our federal government should do nothing to “aid and abet” Berkeley until it behaves as an American community. Period.

I would keep a recruiting office in Berkely even if they never recruit another person from that area just to piss them off. I am so sick and tired of small groups of vocal nuts attacking things that are fundamental to the American way of life. Yes, they have a 1st amendment right to be stupid, as DeMint observed, but I sure as Hell wouldn’t let these nuts run me out of town. How dare the City of Berkeley thumb their noses at the United States Marines who defend our daily rights and freedoms. They don’t deserve even a penny of Federal funds. Please everyone, contact your local senator and have them stand by Senator Demint so that we can correct this wrong.

I would definately stop all federal funding immediately. I would put road blocks up at all federal highways that feed the city. I would put Marines at all those roadblocks. I would stop any federally received services to the city such as water systems, electricity fed by federal dams, etc…

I would close all the federal post offices, and any other federal offices in the city.

I would do this until the American citizens in Berkley (if there are any left) recalled these officials and replaced them with Americans.

I was watching this appalling report a few minutes ago and was compelled to respond. These people should be kissing the ground in thanks that they have a place to express themselves in this manner without any fear of being rounded up in the middle of the night. YES there are places in the world where this DOES happen, but it is because of those Marines and the sacrifices they and those who came before have made insure that nothing like that happens in this country. While I find it unlikely that public funding would ever be withheld from this area, popular condemnation of their actions on posting fora such as this will help to put pressure on public officials there that perhaps there might be more important issues to consider. This is an outrgage but coming from Berzerkley not suprising. These city council and all the idiots they represent (people who live there) do not understand, the marines are not trying to recruit you. They would not take you! They are trying to reach the small percent of decent, patriotic americans who live there. Maybe it’s not worth it but it is illegal to prevent them from recruiting to protect our nation in every city in the land. The first duty of the government is to protect our people by providing for the common defense, to this end we have a military force, to have that you must recruit. If I could afford it I would fly up there & stay there & protest every day, if I was young enough I would join the armed forces to protect our nation from islamofacist extremism & any other challenge we face. Thank God these people are a small minority. I will be contacting all my representatives to support Sen DeMint recommendation to stop all federal funding.

I agree with the congressman, but I think these Federal handouts, for the most part, are pork-barrel projects that are probably given to many other cities in the U.S…..what in the hell is the Berkeley/Albana ferry service anyway?

Maybe the people of Berkely are tired of having their kids lied to and enticed into fighting in an unjust war, only to come home in body bags. For what? To line the pockets of Halliburton and the oil companies.

I think that Berkley should be ’shunned’ by all parts of the National Government. No Federal monies should go to Berkley in any form. Federal employees should not live there or purchase anything from any business in the town. I would pull all military offices, not just the Marines, out of there. Not as a surrender but because I don’t want the rent money going to anyone in Berkley. Move them to just outside the city limits. There are probably some un-necessary Post Offices there, for the convenience of the residents. Lets cut that down to the bare minimum.

In other words, hit them where it hurts, in the pocketbook.

Too bad we can’t require anyone, coming out of the Berkley city limits, to show a passport.

I would also not object to seeing a large pink circle with a slash through it painted on a certain parking place.

I completely support Senator Demint’s efforts. The downside is that people and agencies who need and deserve these funds, many of whom may not even remotely support the city council’s decisions, should think about letting the council members know they’re the unwelcome ones and undertake a recall effort.

It is not surprising to me that the type people that make up Berkley’s City Council has taken a stand against our military They are worthless and not worthy to live in this country. As a former 20 year City Councilman and former Mayor of a small city in Washington I am ashamed of them and support completely withholding any kind of Federal tax money to their city.

While it seems unbelievable what the city of Berkeley is doing, I supposed we shouldn’t be surprised that one of most liberal places in the country would dishonor the very people who give them the freedom to publicly display their ignorance. But there is no way that one dime of federal funding should go to a community that has no use for the government anyway.

It continues to show that the Berkeley town council and those residents of Berkeley who support removal of the Marine Recruiting station are truly disconnected from reality and should not benefit from any Federal Aid or programs since they do not want to support the elite defenders of our freedom. I can understand their refusal to support the war in Iraq, but come on…without a strong well organized military, of which the Marines play a vital role, we would be vulnerable to all types of threats. It seems ironic that these alleged supporters of free speech are protesting a military branch that allows them to enjoy the right to free speech and the freedoms that allow us to be Americans. Whether you like it or not, manu of the good citizens of this country will work to deny your access to any Federal Taxpayer Dollars, also, you (the city of Berkeley) should not receive any California State Taxpayer Dollars as long as you have this immature, attitude about the United States of America’s military. I am in complete agreement as far as halting all Special funding from the government, however I also believe that they should lose ALL Federal Funding of every kind in addition to special funding.

In addition to the loss of funding, I think the Federal Government, in light of the many base closings around the country, should exercise the right of eminent domain, and turn most of Berkeley into a large military base complete with housing for those who serve in the armed forces.

Instead of scattering the personnel from several bases, condense the personnel from all branches of the service at Berkeley!

But if they(Berkeley) think that little of this country and those who protect them, they should all rightfully lose what they have because of that freedom and be forced to have to find a place of “their own”.

I love your show and love fox. I recieved a disabling gunshot wound while fighting with the 7th Marines on September 14th 1968 in Vietnam as an infantry m-60 machine gunner. The next time the town council of Berkley screams for the military to come put out the wild fires that might threaten their scummy town, I think they should just let the town burn to the ground. When I came home from Viet Nam, I clearly remember the first thing I saw when we deplaned was a bunch of war protesters holding up signs proclaiming that we were baby killers, and other vile slogans. I have never forgotten this experience, and I wouldn’t want any of this generation of soldiers to feel the pain and shame we did when we were welcomed home in this despicable manner.

Let Berkley have their protests, the Marines are certainly welcome in my town. I would like to shake the hand of every one of our brave soldiers coming home from a war we should not had have to been involved in. If Clinton had done something besides chase Monica Lewinsky around the Oval Office when they attacked the WTC the first time, we wouldn’t be in this protracted war of cultures.

You can clarify the language all you want, but you and your council need to go.

If there are any American citizens left in Berkley then I hope they toss you and your nazi city council officials right out of office.

I also hope that the Federal Government closes all its post offices and any other Federal offices that service your city. I hope they put road blocks up to close all Federal highway access to your city. It would be benificial to America if they also shut off all other Federal utilities that may be suppling your city such as electricity from Federal dams, or any water supplied through Federal water projects.

Of course, you and the council members could always resign immediately and solve the issue today.

I agree entirely with Senator Demint. Cut all funding to Berkley. I for one would be extremely upset if 1 cent of my tax dollars goes to the protection of Berkley. It is one thing to speak against something and to legislate against it. What Berkley doesn’t seem to understand is that their freedom of speach is guaranteed but we must suffer the conscequences for our actions. If Berkley refuses our troops then they should have no right to the protection thereof.

Again, I am a VETERAN of 16 years, with several years of combat experience, and believe that as a result of this believe I have earned the right to speak with credibility on this subject.

During my tours I have held a dying 19 y/o soldier in my arms as he asked me to take care of his brother and mother and have made one too many of the heart wrenching notification visits to the homes of fallen soldiers.

I ask you why do we fight this war based on lies? I have lost more freedom as a result of the Bush presidency then I have to Iraqis!

If this so called “war on terror” is so crucial to the American way of life then every male between the ages of 18 – 35 should be required to serve two to fours years in the armed forces. In addition, there should be a mandatory war tax and the fruits of labor should be focused on supporting the war effort.

As a retired police officer and Marine, I salute Jim Demint for his actions regarding the Berkley slugs. As individuals they all hate the cops until one of them gets mugged. I don’t want another dime going to these parasite groups or cities. These are the same people who despise SUVs but put out the cry for them when they have a weather emergency. Personally, as a former Marine, why would we even want anyone from Berkley serving in the Corps? With any luck, Berkley will fall off into the Pacific when the next quake comes. I am currently serving in the active duty US Navy and I have a lot of respect for my fellow Marine brethren. The ungrateful people of the Berkeley City Council have absolutely no right to spend federal money while at the same time trying to actually put something into law that encourages the disruption of a federal recruiting office.

If this is just a protest against the “Don’t Ask-Don’t Tell policy” then there is a much more professional way to do business. But I have very little sympathy for anyone who tries to silence those who have fought, bleed, and died for their Rights and Freedoms! I agree that American Service men and women provide the right for Berkeley to make these types of decisions freely.

Why dont they move their campus to Bahgdad or some other place where Al Quida or someone like them decides who gets to go to school and who don’t and let them do your recruiting for you. LETS BE CLEAR, no “gay agenda” exists on this issue of our men and women in the military and the recent actions of The City of “Bizerkly.” This city has a well documented history of being out of touch with mainstream society. It has consistently pushed the limits of the law and in some cases violates the law when ever it thinks it can get away with it.

While, we feel that members of the gay community should be permitted to serve in the armed forces-that is/was not the motivation for the actions of Berkley’s City Government. This action was pushed forward by those traitors call “Code Pink” and “Move On.org”! The fact is this city has a long standing history of being a renegade city that dates clear back to the 1960’s-70 and the Vietnam War. Nothing has changed since the 1960’s in this city and the violent riots on the Campus of US Berkley.

Back in the mid 1960’s, this city tried to legalize pot, until the Alameda County Sheriff came in a nearly took over their police department. The City of Berkley gave in and fell into line with mainstream society-this is what needs t be done now with respects to our US Marines-cut off the funding and get their undivided attention! This city and all the “crazies” that live there were some of the very first in California to violate Federal Drug laws in its support of marijuana after the State of California decided to legalized personal possession of marijuana 1992. Now they have stores that sell marijuana (an illegal drug under federal law) right over the counter! So, why we are at it cut off all the funding to their police department as well!

In Berkeley they want free speech, but if you are a conservative living in this city they want you out, and are intolerant of your different views. We clearly agree that any federal funds that are being sent to this city should be stopped at once! We clearly support the efforts of U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., when is says “the City of Berkeley, Calif., no longer deserves federal money.” The city of Berkley needs to be brought in to line with the rest of the USA. So, the more funding that can be cut off from them the better! It sends a clear message to others who may want to follow them down this slippery slope-like the City of West Hollywood here in Southern California.

I am writing you in regards to your city’s decision to deam the U.S. Marines “uninvited and unwelcomed guests.” I am uphauled, shocked, and ashamed that citizens/your city can call yourselves Americans. What hypocracy! If it wasn’t for the military, you wouldn’t have the freedom to protest the military. And lots of other freedoms as well. If your citizens/city was really, truly against what the military stands for, then that would mean you’re against what they provide to you. Such as freedom of speech, protest, press, etc… If that was the case, then the best way to prove you’re against the military is to stop enjoying the rights it provides to you. Which means you all stop talking, don’t protest, stop using the press, etc… Of course I know, as well as you do, that will not happen. You’ll all still enjoy the freedoms you’re provided, but bash the people that give it to you. What hypocrites!! I personally hope that the terrorists make your city one of the next on their list. And if something such as an earthquake, forest fire, or other natural (or unnatural) disaster hits your town, I hope you’re city is provided no federal aid or assistance. Especially the Marines, being as they have assisted in helping control riots in your state and helping many times fight the fires that ravaged your state.
There are numerous states and cities that are on my boycott list. Yours is now added to my list. Your city will never receive one penny of my money. I am a retired 26 year veteran of the U.S. Navy, including service from Viet Nam through Desert Storm. Berley was in the center of similar matters during the Viet Nam war. Service members were resented then, and they are still at it today. It is appalling to think that this is happening again in a country that owes its very existance to the brave men and women that defend the freedoms we enjoy.

Thank you, Senator DeMint, for bringing this issue to the U.S. public. Where do the rest of our elected representatives stand on this issue? The entire Congress should get off their duffs and cut off all funding to Berkley, and any community that openly supports similar behavior, NOW.

I lived in the Bay Area from 1954 until I retired in 1992. I went to a private University in Stanford California. My family and I lived in the small community of La Honda in the Santa Cruz mountains.
Joan Baez, Ken Kesey, Patty Hearst were our neighbors. This community became the center of the “hippie” universe when the haight-ashbury spun out of control due to the influx of drugs and dilitante wanabes. Berkely has always been an embarassing joke to those of us who created the “liberal left”. We have all moved on to other places and philosophic preferences.
My son recently retired from the Marine Corps after 20 years of exemplary service to our Country. It was my honor to serve in the military during the Korean conflict.
It is essential that Berkely have the experience of complete and permanent rejection as a participating member of our society. The first step is to exclude them from eating at the State and Federal financial trough. Not one penny of our tax money should be designated to support these miserable bottom feeders. The school, falsely labeled as a university, should be closed. The city council can be left in place to continualy remind all of us of the inherent danger in the feeling of self importance.

BESERKely does it again! I’m a CA resident and have always been disgusted and ashamed by the abject ignorance that eminates from this location in our great state. I vote with my wallet and make it a point to never, ever spend a cent of my own money on anything in that city, or any company based in that city. Since Beserkely continues to show disdain for our Federal government, our Federal government should return the favor. I fully support Sen DeMint’s legislation and will write my legislators to urge them to do the same. Let’s send a message to BESERKeley to let them know that they are way out in left field.

I am in complete agreement with Senator Demint and his efforts to cut off federal funding for the University of California at Berkley. I do not want any of my taxes going to the support of that
cess pool. I really would like to see the school closed all-together as a measure to protect future
students who might unsuspectingly enroll there. I will write to my two Texas senators and ask that they support Senator Demint. Thank you.

It saddens and amazes me at how little the media (particularly Fox News) understands about what is currently going on in Berkeley. Let me be as clear and as understandable as possible.

The stance of the city is actually the stance of the university and academia. Now, let me say that again. The stance of the city is actually the stance of the university and academia.

Berkeley has a population of approximately 100,000 people. Approximately 35,000 are students. Normal people vote in the area of 60-40 one way or the other on issues and candidates. Students on the other hand, vote 85-95% the same way for candidates and issues. Do the math people, the issues and candidates supported by students in major college communities wins every time.

And why is that? Because the student voice is manipulated by academia via curriculum, campus voice (newspapers), and other activists who’s sole job is to create dissent for capitalism. How are they supported? Through the non-profits supported by the city council which is elected by the student vote.

Come on, People. This is not rocket-science. It’s right there for all of you to see if you take the time to look.

The 26th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was not “really” about giving those who could get drafted a voice in government. The “real” reason was to give “leftist” …”socialist” academia, political power. And you wonder why your kids go off to college and come home as dense as they were when they left? It is become the prime directive of colleges and universities around the country is no longer about educating your kids. It is purely, and simply about garnering political power at the grass roots level and building upon it so that a future generation may wipe out capitalism for the gloy of another socialist utopia.

The truly sad thing is that all of those life-invested citizens of real consequences within these university communities have lost their right to direct and control their community’s own future direction. And they are being denied by students-from-elsewhere, who are allowed to vote in their school communities without consequence (on leadership, on issues, on taxes), while their parents get nice fat dependent deductions somewhere else and also without having consequences for the actions of their children.

Can any of you see how wrong this is?

There is a way to make things right. There is a way to make sure that invested citizens of a community get their rightful power back and still give the 18-21 year old voter their rightful voice.

If you are a dependent from somewhere else you would be given choice, in concert with your tax-claiming parents. If you want to keep your dependent status, you would continue to vote by absentee ballot at your home of record (i.e.; where your home is – where your dependent tax break is claimed).

If you want to vote in Berkeley or other college community, that’s fine. But as a full and free adult, who by re-registering to become a citizen in your college community, has also voluntarily abandoned your last voting domicile (YOUR HOME), your consequence for such actions would be forfeiture of your dependent status. Your parents would then lose you as a dependent exemption (because you are 18 or older and have abandoned your home); and your prents would also be levied gift taxes on amounts over $10,000 per year in support.

This truly makes it fair for everyone. For surely all should be able to understand that when you deny the voice of a consequencial community when suffering no real consequnces yourself-it’s wrong!

Keep up the good fight Senator DeMint. My son is a proud US Marine corporal who just completed two tours of duty in Iraq. Having lived all my life in the bay area I have become immune to all the anti-military nonsense and drivel that spews from the mouths of local idiots. But this latest effort by Code Pink is more than I could stand. Hit that Berkeley city council where it hurts the most. Take away all their federal funds and re route that money to Walter Reed hospital or the wounded warrior project. Let the money be used for a very worthwhile cause and let Code Pink make up the difference for the peoples republic of Berkeley.

People of Berkeley California, you are free to leave at anytime to go anywhere in the World, feel free to exercise that freedom. Your action has helped encourage others in this world who would take this freedom from you. You think this can not happen in today’s “Modern” times, our place in history is as all of us live it day by day. This line of thinking is what broke the spirit of support of our troops in Viet Nam years ago your work is still in the hearts of many of these veterans to this day!! You are not fix to kiss the boots a single Marine!!!!!

Are we presently at war or aren’t we? The entire world thinks that we are, and if this is really true, we are at war, isn’t it a treasonous act for a state, local government, or individual to undermine and sabotage the military during war time? Why haven’t all the members on the city council at Berkeley who voted for this been arrested for treason? We need to make all of our politicians accountable for any irresponsible acts they comment. Pull all Federal funding also until the people in Berkeley can re-elect some Americans.

In the mean time I think the Military needs to take advantage of our third amendment to our constitution and move about 100,000 military personnel into the city of Berkeley to be quartered in each and every residence, except for Gordon Wozniak’s of course, who voted against the rest of the city council.

The whole population of Berkley are umamerican idiots. They don’t deserve being represented by any military in any situation. If the whole city begans burning, no one should come to their aid. If the governor dosen’t step up and make them change their behavior, then the whole state should not receive military help when they have fires that threaten a large portion of the state. I’m all for relocating all of the military stationed in California. If they don’t like us, they should not get any of our money (taxes or voluntary spending). I transited their despicable city three times (in uniform) and got a definite feeling that I was not welcome there. I have spoken with several other military members who have had the same experience. The local government needs to scrape the yellow stripe off their backs and make the demonstrating idiots go home or put them in jail.

I am appalled; I spent 30 years in the US Navy during which I taught Naval ROTC for three years at a major university; that experience enforced my belief that our young people have a right to know about the opportunities this country offers through military service, and a right to know of the sacrifice generations of their fellow Americans have made for their freedom. I am offended by the irresponsibility of the Berkley City Council; even more disturbing is the citizenry of Berkley that support and/or tolerated such an affront to this great Nation of ours. I fully support the effort of Senator DeMint (where are you Patty and Maria) of S. Carolina to with-hold “earmarked” funds for Berkley and fully support any effort to deny all Federal funding to Berkley and all “sanctuary” cities – a related thought’ the Navy should not move “Fleet Week” from San Francisco, I’m all for “in your face”. I will be sending communications to our legislators to help promote the process, to cut all State and Federal Funding to the extent the Law allows. I am writing you in regards to your city’s decision to deem the U.S. Marines “uninvited and unwelcomed guests.” I am uphauled, shocked, and ashamed that citizens/your city can call yourselves Americans. What hypocracy! If it wasn’t for the military, you wouldn’t have the freedom to protest the military. And lots of other freedoms as well. If your citizens/city was really, truly against what the military stands for, then that would mean you’re against what they provide to you. Such as freedom of speech, protest, press, etc… If that was the case, then the best way to prove you’re against the military is to stop enjoying the rights it provides to you. Which means you all stop talking, don’t protest, stop using the press, etc… Of course I know, as well as you do, that will not happen. You’ll all still enjoy the freedoms you’re provided, but bash the people that give it to you. What hypocrites!! I personally hope that the terrorists make your city one of the next on their list. And if something such as an earthquake, forest fire, or other natural (or unnatural) disaster hits your town, I hope you’re city is provided no federal aid or assistance. Especially the Marines, being as they have assisted in helping control riots in your state and helping many times fight the fires that ravaged your state.
There are numerous states and cities that are on my boycott list. Yours is now added to my list. Your city will never receive one penny of my money. I doubt that you/your city will care about one man, but I know many people that feel the way I do. Including hundreds of military and veterans, me being one of them. I will support any politician that will put forth a bill to stop all federal money or aid to your city.
Hopefully, some crazy terrorist will assist the country first with starting to weed out some of the nutjubs in the country.

i am absolutely discouraged over this brilliant thought process going on in berkeley. the marines have every right to be in this community to support our constitution. the same people that do not want the marines in town will be the first to run and hide when any danger is near or present. they will be complaining about the lack of protection. please discontinue the funds appropriated to the town and leave the marines at their post where they belong. thank you phil

I am appalled by the Berkeley City Council’s decision to try to close the Marine Recruiting office while giving the Code Pink group a parking space and sound permit to protest the Marines.

My grandson is a Marine and fought his way from Kuwait to Baghdad so people like this would have the freedom to make fools of themselves. This is borderline sedition.

I applaud Jim DeMint’s effort to remove Federal funding for the city of Berkeley. I sent emails to Senators Feinstein and Boxer and Governor Schwarzenegger urging them to support his effort.

Who in the world does the Berkley City Council think they are? Shame on them. This is the United State of America. The Marines and all the military protect our citizens, including kooks like them … and they don’t have the intelligence to understand that. They don’t deserve any federal funds, grants or other benefits that they currently receive if they don’t want the military recruiters in their city or at their universities. I think the very next tax dollar spent on this boil on the butt of humanity should be to help them pack….lock, stock, and barrel, and move to a country more to their liking. I was shocked to hear on Fox News what is going on in Berkeley California. I can’t believe any American would ban our military presence from anything. Berkeley for many years has wrongly prided itself as the leading radical city in the U.S.
I have never voiced my opinion before on line, but when I saw this story on your program today, I was compelled to voice my concern. I for once, would like the federal government to stop funding programs that Berkeley receives. The city of Berkeley is an activist community which personifies the words Radical, Rebels, etc… they benefit from the security provided by our nations troops & piggy back riding the coat tails of the State of California & this countries finanicial coffers. I could go on, but enough is enough!!!

I think the Berkley freaks should move to the remote tribal areas of Pakistan and do us all a favor! They are the enemies of the state!! I”m a spouce of activy duty Navy and I find it appauling that Berkeley thinks they can ban Marines from their town! Frankly it’s the military that gives the people of that city the freedom to express opinions but you have to be careful because if you say one group isn’t allowed to show themselves then other groups like the Code Pink group protesting the Marines presence there…what gives them the right to say their opinion then? Everyone has a job, everyone has beliefs and we all have to make sure that EVERYONE is allowed to express themselves. The Marines need people to do a job, protecting this country and showing support for them is critical! Afterall they make sure you sleep in peace at night! If you don’t want to be in the military don’t go in the office and sign up but don’t kick them out of town because you don’t like what they stand for. What they stand for is your freedom!

I’m 56 years old now and first became aware of Berkeley when I was 16…it was a cesspool of hateful, traitorous and destructive liberal thought then and they apparently have learned nothing in the past 40 years. Those people should no longer be tolerated as merely misguided. As a former Marine, I think that the Berkeley City Council should be given 24 hours to annul their vote or else leave the country. They can go live in some socialist, terrorist friendly country -nowdays there are many of them.
These uber-liberals think that they can make nice with terrorists, Islamo-fascists, and get their way on everything in a free society. Terrorists love these Berkeley idiots, are using them for their own ends, and will one day eat them -just as they will everyone else who helps them.

As a former serviceman, I think this is appalling. A Soldier’s Silent Night

‘Twas the night before Christmas, he lived all alone,
in a one bedroom house made of plaster and stone.
I had come down the chimney with presents to give,
and to see just who in this home did live.
I looked all about, a strange sight I did see,
no tinsel, no presents, net even a tree.
No stocking by mantle, just boots filled with sand,
on the wall hung pictures of far distant lands.
With medals and badges, awards of all kinds,
a sober thought came through my mind.
For this house was different, it was dark and dreary,
I found the home of a soldier, once I could see clearly.
The soldier lay sleeping, silent, alone,
curled up on the floor in this one bedroom home.
The face was so gentle, the room in such disorder,
not how I pictured a United States Soldier.
Was this the hero of whom I’d just read?
Curled up on a poncho, the floor for a bed?
I realized the families that I saw this night,
owed their lives to these soldiers who were willing to fight.
Soon round the world, the children would play,
and grownups would celebrate a bright Christmas day.
They all enjoyed freedom each month of the year,
because of the soldiers, like the one lying here.
I couldn’t help wonder how many lay alone,
on a cold Christmas Eve in a land far from home.
The very thought brought a tear to my eye,
I dropped to my knees and started to cry.
The soldier awakened and I heard a rough voice,
“Santa don’t cry, this life is my choice;
I fight for freedom, I don’t ask for more,
my life is my God, my Country, My Corps.”
The soldier rolled over and drifted to sleep,
I couldn’t control it, I continued to weep.
I kept watch for hours, so silent and still
and we both shivered from the cold night’s chill.
I didn’t want to leave on that cold, dark night,
this guardian of honor so willing to fight.
The the soldier rolled over, with a voice soft and pure,
whispered, “carry on Santa, it’s Christmas day, all is secure.”
One look at my watch and I knew he was right.
Merry Christmas my friend, and to all a good night.

If they don’t appreciate the brave men & women who fought & died for their freedoms, then they shouldn’t have the right to any of my federal tax dollars. I am completely disgusted but not surprised to hear this coming out of Berkeley. I was born in Santa Barbara CA back in 1964 and lived in Walnut Creek until 1969. In this day and age I am ashamed to admit that fact to any straight thinking American (not anybody from Califonia obviously as I would probably be banished from the state for life). Luckily I got out of that state ASAP and am now residing in the great state of Texas (God Bless Texas!). I served four years in the Marine Corps defending this country. I cannot believe the gall of this city (government no less!) to disrespect the men and women who have sacrificed their lives, sweat and blood to protect this nation serving in the Marines as well as all other branches of the military. (Which makes me wonder why the Navy or Air Force recruiting offices are not a part of this rediculous un-American scenario?) I support DeMint and this proposal 100%. I am a long time resident of the SF Bay Area and have been boycotting Berkeley since they wouldn’t allow their firemen to fly flags on their rigs after 9/11. Let them raise their own money for services.

As a retired military family, we were shocked at the audacity of the city of Berkeley. What a city! We hope that the Pentagon doesn’t give in and the recruiters don’t leave. This is unacceptable for a city and federal funds should be cut. Maybe they will have to “go to war” with Code Pink across the street!

I believe this is the same municipal government body that initially refused to allow the Berkeley Fire Department to display the American flag on its firetrucks after the attacks of 9/11.

It’s a free country, but there is simply no obligation for the federal government to subsidize fools.

Here is a question.

As I remember my constitution only the Federal and State governments are mentioned. Local government is granted power from the State and Federal and has no seperate powers only those granted by the State and Federal Governments.

Therefore why has no one asked Governor Schwarzenager to ask the California Legislature to revoke the City of Berkley’s status as a local government and take it over.

The percentages of less than 10% running roughshod (that’s a Texas phrase) over the other 90% in America is still ongoing.

Another thought is that our military will be dismantled and eventually destroyed if Obama or Clinton become President. Why doesn’t someone ask each of them to take an public comment on this ongoing debate as they run around the country espouses their patriotism.

I say we go one step further for the fine folks in Berkley. I propose we close all the military bases in the state just to make sure no one is offended by the ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ policy and their fiends at Code Pink can then busy themselves trying to repair the California economy.

All federal funding for the State of California should be immediately suspended, including welfare. I am an American. I devoted my life to defending freedom and the right to exercise freedom. What Berkley has done is not freedom of speech, it is an abandonment of freedom. The democrats who rule over Berkley California are socialists just like Fidel Castro in Cuba and Kim in North Korea. They only allow their side and do everything possible to sensor freedom.

This is a time of war, and the Berkley City Council is guilty of treason during a time of war. I call on the Attorney General to arrest the council members who voted for this treasonous statement and try them as war criminals.

If there are so many conservatives out there, why is the country leaning into socialism? Think maybe we need to make more noise. Not like the liberal crying and sniveling, but more like a ROAR! Stand up and be heard!

What the City of Berkeley is doing is appalling, and a slap in the face to the Marines whose actions give its citizens the right to protest. DeMint is on the right track with his draft legislation that would rescind all earmarks dedicated for the City of Berkeley in the latest appropriations bill. BTW, where is the ACLU in all this? Your anti Marine resolution you just passed is very interesting. I believe if the city does not want recruiters in the city, the recruiters should leave. However, all decisions come at a cost. If you truly believe that the Federal Government is running an unjust war and has anti-homosexual rules for the military, than why would you want anything from this government? If you really want to show the country how strongly you feel about this, you should not stop at kicking out the military. Stop taking federal money of any kind for any reason. Of course, you should not have to pay federal taxes either. Also if a natural disaster would unfortunately hit your city, I would expect you not to except any help from the federal government, not even the National Guard. If your city would do all these things I would personally drive up there and help move the recruiting station. Unfortunately, I do not believe your city has what it takes to stand up for what it believes. To do that it takes brave men and women, which you city seems to lack. You see you can not take the good (Money, freedom of speech, military help during earthquakes, ect.), with out the bad (National policies you do not agree with). You see, brave men and women wearing the same uniforms you despise, fought and died to give us all the freedoms we have. It seems to me that Berkeley wants all the freedoms provided to them by the men and women in uniform (both past and present), but do not want to pay for them. I am sure you have heard it a million times, Freedom is not free. This is not just a cliché, it is a fact. It would be interesting to see a city from a Muslim nation or a country with a dictatorship pull a stunt like yours. I am sure the outcome would not be letters and petitions. I am currently serving as a Marine Reservist back east, and this story just infuriated me! Not only should funding be revoked, and law enforcement, fire service, and medical service redistributed elsewhere, but go a step further. What does requesting the moving of recruitment offices have to do with the troops? How is this troop bashing? This article sounds more like the hypnotic neocon drones. Clearly an educated person would see one has nothing to do with the other.

I am a 30 year retired Marine. Have fought in two Wars for our wonderful country. I spent nearly 4 years as a Prisoner Of War fighting for this Country. I would do it again to keep our citizens free. I am very discouraged when I read about the citzens of Berkley desire to eliminate the United States Marine Recruiting Office. I ask those citzens – Would there be a city called Berkley If it were not for the present and past Military in this great country. Shame on those in that city who would not appricate our Military and those who are members.

It seems obvious to me our higher eductaion system across the country is responsible for promoting a lower set of values for our youth of today and the most recent past. If these educators do not like our form of government or what we as a country has stood for since day one, I would suggest they move to another country where they can really be free. We would support any measures from congress that would help any of the cities and colleges across the nation stand on their own. It is a slap in the face to think my tax dollars are supporting this kind of trash. If there was any way at all I could keep from supporting this area I certainly would, including keeping my kids and grand children out of the schools systems in California.

What can you expect from California? That’s all I have to say.

I support the suspension of funding to these communities that fail to appreciate the freedoms that this wonderful country stands for. I also believe that all federal funding to these silly “santuary cities” should be immediately suspended. Let us see which political candidates have the gonads to support this.

Since when do any of the branches of the military have anything to do with starting wars. THese peoploe seem to think that the Marines started this one? Berkeley should have all their federal money withdrawn , if they persue this unamerican folly. The Marines have protected this country, and will continue to do so, in spite of such stupid activity by the City Council and those so opposed to the military.

It has been extremely rare when I had any regret, whatsoever, for serving in combat and other horrendous situations in order to protect the freedom of this nation and our friends overseas. I was proud to serve in uniform and to offer my life for America. Too, I have never complained about the resulting severe disabilities. However, your City decision to humiliate our Marine Corps with the end result of essentially insulting all military personnel serving today and those who gave the ultimate sacrifice of their life for this country is one I can only explain as sickeningly regretful to the extreme. As a veteran I am absolutely ashamed of you and the City of Berkeley. As an American citizen I am disgusted.

I will be mailing you my Vietnam Service Medal. Throw it in your City trash alongside the heroic efforts of our military heroes. I will have no regrets over its’ loss. I will regret that citizens such as you and your City Council reside in our country.

As a former Marine and a proud citizen of the United States I believe theSenator is on the right track and any of his constituents that refuse to back him and sign his bill should be remembered and voted out the next time they come up for re-election. I am a firm believer in the refusal and withdrawal fo any and all funds the Federal government is sending to that city be stopped immediately. I challenge Governor Swartzenegger to withdraw all state funding as well. I am beyond upset over this.I have three members of our family serving in the army right now.I have my husband who has served 24 years,our 24 year old son and 22 year old son. My husband
and our younger son were deployed to a war zone with in a month of each other. Our son just got married a year ago. For the last two years, I have lived in Berkeley, going to school at UC Berkeley. I agree with everyone that the City of Berkeley has it head stuck somewhere it should not be. What have they done, or what are they doing to the building that they are located in? Nothing!

The City should be spending all of this wasted time on trying to figure out how to stop the homeless in the city of making the city look bad. At least six or seven times a day, I am approached for money. No laws or anything like that? Now that is a major problem for Berkeley.

If you are a resident in Berkeley and you have a car, you got to pay to park and get a sticker for the car. Come on now. Berkeley is one of the most “let me find anything to charge our people” cities that I have been too.

And to give Code Pink a parking space in front of the office. Now something is screwed up.

Has the City of Berkeley realized that on top of the hill is the LBL, which sometime in the past and probably as we are arguing over this is working on something for the military and the war. So if the City wants to be fair and treat everyone equal, then the need to get rid of the Marines, UC Berkeley, and any and all federal departments that are located in the area. Hmmmm, get rid of 40,000 people = no money for the city!!

I totally agree with Sen Demint. Perhaps the best thing to do with the funds that are earmarked for Berkeley would be load the people in favor moving the Marines out would be load them on a plane and move them to Iraq so they could learn what life would be like without the freedoms these men are fighting for.

I also noticed in the agenda and notes from Berkeley City Council was how much they are suggesting various recommendations and resolutions on national concerns. What happened to running their own city. I’m sure they have problems there that need resolved. I don’t know of a city that doesn’t have crime or homeless people.

One other thing that caught my eye was the resolution that stated that the National Guard from California should be brought home from active duty. Please note the name – National Guard. The National Guard is to protect this country. Those men and women join the Guard knowing they could be fighting wars, not just helping with Calif emergencies. Did it ever occur to you that a major emergency like 9/11 is being averted by fighting on foreign soil instead of in your backyard. Don’t think for a moment that the threat to this country is over.

Let’s just see what Berkeley can do on their own and if indeed they can solve their cities problems before taking on the role of national leader.

I am happy to find that most of the people commenting are as appalled as I was over the behavior of the City of Berkeley. For an “educated” city to be so dumb is amazing. A person (in particular one who is highly educated) should have the reasoning skills to say yes or no to a Marine Recruiter. A military Recruiter should always have the right to recruit as we have the right to say yes or no. Wars are never popular. Wars are never easy. First of all, JamesM, I take strong exception to your suggestion that a “real” veteran would not speak out against the horrors of an unjust and immoral war. Having received a Purple Heart and being in theater for 18 months, I have seen my share of horror. Please do not belittle me and attempt to call into question my character.

My second point is addressed to Terri. My unit was deployed as a result of Bush’s claim that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. Yet – the whole time we were there – and even today – there has not been any caches of WMD found. The fact that Bush lied to the American public about the extent of the threat has cost billions of dollars and thousands of lives!

While our country guarantees the right to free speech (fought for by our military), we should not have to supply federal money to anyone who has nothing but contempt for our military or our government. I totally agree with Sen. DeMint. And Speaker Nancy Pelosi usually has a position on everything–where does she stand on this?

Shocked? Not me, I was a Marine in Viet Nam. I’ve seen all this before. Our Nation survived this then and we will survive it now.
The fact is, the Berkeley City Council, like any other state or local government, has no jurisdiction over the Marine Corps or any other part of the federal government. Their proclamation is only relevant to the extent that they can inflame public opinion. The best thing to do is ignore them. Deny them the publicity they are seeking.
Hopefully, when the San Andreas Fault finally solves our “Left Coast Problem,” the resulting tsunami won’t be big enough to harm Hawaii or any other worthwhile places to visit.

My husband is a Gulf War Vet himself and just shakes his head at all the folks that believes Bush “lied”. That is just absurd. So many people hate Bush and they’d rather believe that kind of thing.

I enlisted in the Marines in 1969 and I retiered in 1993. Durring that time all Marines were treated like 3rd class citizens. I have been very happy to see our milliary treated with respect durring this war. Now a few aggiators are going to put things right back where they were in 1969. It is sad to see people that clam to be americans but hate anyone that dosn’t aggree with there view.

I like almost everyone who posted can’t believe these people live in the United States? I too firmly believe that all government funding should be withheld from Berkeley. If they think they can do without our military, then let them do without financial support. I have always thought there was something wrong with those people, but this takes the cake. I think that most of California is “out of touch” with the rest of the country. I would like to hear the candidates speak to this issue, also.

Not only is it telling that Berkeley wants to kick-out the marines, according to Berkeley’s city council, because recruits are too young to make their own decisions, but Berkeley defends the right for a 13 year old to have an abortion without parental consent. Isn’t that hypocritical to say that a young man or woman of 18 or 19 years of age is not capable of making their own decisions about joining the military service, when city council members in Berkeley disagree with that decision. But, it is ok for a 13 year old girl to make a life ending decision to revoke the right of life for a child without parental consent.

My son was a Marine, died while serving his country in this war on terror. I have attended rallies that support our military and the troops and have seen these wacko PINK’s. They are so obnoxious, disgusting, degrading & uninformed. Many should be locked up, not in jail, but in a mental institutions. They are just bizarre. The only way they can get attention is to dress as clowns and spew vulgarities.
If we could pack them all up and ship them over to the terrorists, they would be crying to have the Marines save them.

These are the same stupid cowards that spit on me and called me and other returning Vietnam Veterans baby killers. How long will the nation let them keep doing these despicable acts. If it were in my power I would cut off all funding to these elitist cowards. When the earth shakes, the fires start, the mud slides, slide, WHO DO YOU THINK THEY WILL SCREAM FOR? Our nation will always face people like these who want nothing more than to be allowed to bask in the luxuries that have been bought by the blood of heros like these US MARINES.

I don’t think it is unfortunate that a few individuals can attack federal programs or federal entities because I live in the united States.

I’m outraged!!! As a retired military member, tears come to my eyes to even think people of this great country would even think about kicking military recruiters out of their city. I oppose any future government expendetures in or near Bezerkley. As a proud decorated combat soldier in an unpopular war it is my belief that the majority of citizens of that despicable city should be tried for treason. If they were proud citizens we would have heard their protestations.

Firstly I have to admit that I did not read all of the e-mails on this topic, but it is obvious the majority is against the town council and Code PINK. I totally agree.

My question is (and it may have been addressed already) this: How do the citizens of Berkely feel about this? Are they supporting the town council or will the members be looking for a job come next election? I know the liberals are alive and well in California, but can they all be idiots? As someone said, it is obvious why Hilary is doing well in California; and the fear is the backing of the democrats by them.

I totally support what Berkeley is doing. Young people have no idea what the reality of war is. The marines are doing everything they can to sign the youth up without letting them know what they are getting in to.

I heard council woman Ying this morning. Her information is incorrect. Marine recruiters are forright and honest will all recruits that wish to join the Marines.

As a formerly active Marine I joined when I was seventeen. Yes My parent s had to sign for me and yes my recruiter was very honest. I knew exactly what I was in for.

There was one thing I didn’t expect however. The amount of pride I would feel my entire life after having served my country. I didn’t expect it but I do cherish it.

As a Viet Nam Vet I know how much harm the closed minded actions of the city of Berkley can cause.
I am a commercial truck driver and I will refuse to deliver any freight to Berkley, If I loose my job because of it than “so be it”. I will encourage any other drivers I come in contact with to do the same.
I support their right to voice their opinion but not to shut out any opposing views or the ability of our nation to defend our freedoms and way of life, here at home or abroad.

I served in the Marine Corps in the 60’s and it was an interesting time to be a Marine. Today is also an interesting time to be a Marine. I believe that we should put out a “call for action” to every American who love this country to go to Berkeley and shut the place down. If three of those nuts can chain themselves to the recurting office then three million good Americand can chain themselves to every business in the entire city.

I say, “take away the federal funds and all other benefits that America gives to the City of Berkley”. Should a terrorist attack occur on or near the Berkeley campus, would the mayor expect Military or Government assistance? If so, I hope that assistance never comes.

The folks at Berkeley have lost sight of what their job is — they should be teaching in a thoughtful, unbiased — “fair and balanced” manner. If they want to be political activists, they ought to get another day job and work their politics on their own time. Sen DeMint is correct, but may not have gone far enough. What about the federal monies that go to the state and then are spent on projects that benefit Berkeley. I think the Federal Governement should require the state of California ensure that those federal monies given to the state are not be spent to benefit Berkeley. Further, if there is any disaster that includes Berkeley, then Berkeley should be ignored by the Federal Government for any aid or support until such time as they come to thier senses…

Can you imagine if Berkeley had a Katrina style disaster and got not federal aid or support…

that Berkeley feels this way and they are able to voice their opinions. It proves that it’s working!
The First Amendment, that is. All those brave men and women who have given thier lives to
permit citizens like these (they are legal US citizens, aren’t they?) to voice their opinions with no
fear of reprisal must be shaking their heads in disbelief. I’m sure there will be another attempted
parallel to liken President Bush to Adolf Hitler, but there is proof positive to those extremists that
their analogy (simile?) is false. If President Bush (and the administration) were like Hitler (and

I stare out into the darkness from my post, and I watch the city burn to the ground. I smell the familiar smells, and I walk Through the familiar rubble, and I look at the frightened faces that watch me pass down the streets of their neighborhoods. My nerves hardly rest; my hands are steady on a device that has been given to me from my government for the purpose of taking the lives of others.

I sweat, and I am tired. My back aches from the loads I carry. Young American boys look to me to direct them in a manner that will someday allow them to see their families again…and yet, I too, am just a boy….my age not but a few years more than that of the ones I lead. I am stressed, I am scared, and I am paranoid because death is everywhere. It waits for me, it calls to me from around street corners and windows, and it is always there.

There are the demons that follow me and tempt me into thoughts and actions that are not my own…but that are necessary for survival. I’ve made compromises with my humanity. And I am not alone in this. Miles from me are my brethren in this world who walk in the same streets…who feel the same things, whether they admit to it or not.
And to think, I volunteered for this… And I am ignorant to the rest of the world..or so I thought.

But even thousands of miles away in Ramadi Iraq, the cries and screams and complaints of the ungrateful reach me. In a year I will be thrust back into society from a life and mentality that doesn’t fit your average man. And then, I will be alone. And then, I will walk down the streets of America and see the yellow ribbon stickers on the cars of the same people who compare our President to Hitler.

I will watch the television and watch the Cindy Sheehan’s and the Al Franken’s, and the rest of the ignorant sheep of America spout off their mouths about a subject they know nothing about. It is their right, however, and it is a right that is defended by hundreds of thousands of boys and girls scattered across the world, far from home. I use the word boys and girls because that’s what they are. In the Army, the average age of the infantry man is nineteen years old. The average rank of soldiers killed in action is Private First Class.

People like Cindy Sheehan are ignorant. Not just to this war, but to the results of their idiotic ramblings – or at least I hope they are. They don’t realize its effects on this war. In this war, there is no Geneva Convention, no cease fires. Medics and Chaplains are not spared from the enemy’s brutality because it’s against the rules. I can only imagine the horrors a military Chaplain would experience at the hands of the enemy. The enemy slinks in the shadows and fights a coward’s war against us. It is effective though, as many men and women have died since the start of this war. And the memory of their service to America is tainted by the inconsiderate remarks on our nation’s news outlets. And every day, the enemy changes…only now, the enemy is becoming something new. The enemy is transitioning from the Muslim extremists to Americans. The enemy is becoming the very people whom we defend with our lives. And they do not realize it.

But in denouncing our actions, denouncing our leaders, denouncing the war we live and fight, they are isolating the military from society…and they are becoming our enemy.

Democrats and peace activists like to toss the word “quagmire” around and compare this war to Vietnam . In a way they are right, this war is becoming like Vietnam. Not the actual war, but in the isolation of country and military. America is not a nation at war; they are a nation with its military at war. Like it or not, we are here, some of us for our second or third times; some even for their fourth and so on. Americans are so concerned now with politics, that it is interfering with our war.

Terrorists cut the heads off of American citizens on the Internet…and there is no outrage, but an American soldier kills an Iraqi in the midst of battle, and there are investigations, and sometimes soldiers are even jailed…for doing their job.

It is absolutely sickening to me to think our country has come to this. Why are we so obsessed with the bad news? Why will people stop at nothing to be against this war, no matter how much evidence of the good we’ve done is thrown in their face? When is the last time CNN or MSNBC or CBS reported the opening of schools and hospitals in Iraq ? Or the leaders of terror cells being detained or killed? It’s all happening, but people will not let up their hatred of Bush. They will ignore the good news, because it just might show people that Bush was right.

America has lost its will to fight. It has lost its will to defend what is right and just in the world.

The crazy thing of it all is that the American people have not even been asked to sacrifice a single thing. It’s not like World War Two, where people rationed food, and turned in cars to be made into metal for tanks. The American people have not been asked to sacrifice anything. Unless you are in the military or the family member of a service member, its life as usual…the war doesn’t affect you.

But it affects us. And when it is over and the troops come home and they try to piece together what’s left of them after their service… where will the detractors be then? Where will the Cindy Sheehan’s be to comfort and talk to soldiers and help them sort out the last couple years of their lives, most of which have been spent dodging death and wading through the deaths of their friends? They will be where they always are, somewhere far away, where the horrors of the world can’t touch them. Somewhere where they can complain about things they will never experience in their lifetime; things that the young men and women of America have willingly taken upon their shoulders.

We are the hope of the Iraqi people. They want what everyone else wants in life: safety, security, somewhere to call home. They want a country that is safe to raise their children in. Not a place where their children will be abducted, raped, and murdered if they do not comply with the terrorists demands.

They want to live on, rebuild and prosper. And America has given them the opportunity, but only if we stay true to the cause and see it to its end. But the country must unite in this endeavor…we cannot place the burden on our military alone. We must all stand up and fight, whether in uniform or not. And supporting us is more than sticking yellow ribbon stickers on your cars. It’s supporting our President, our troops and our cause.

Right now, the burden is all on the American soldiers. Right now, Hope Rides Alone. But it can change, it must change. Because there is only failure and darkness ahead for us as a country, as a people, if it doesn’t.

Let’s stop all the political nonsense, let’s stop all the bickering, let’s stop all the bad news, and let’s stand and fight!

I’m not sure how many letters or articles you’ve ever read from the genre of “News from the Front,” but this is one of the best I’ve ever read, including all of America’s wars. As I was reading this, I forgot that it was my son who had written it. My emotions range from great pride to great sorrow, knowing that my little boy (22 years old) has become this man.
He is my hero. Thank all of you for your prayers for him; he needs them now more than ever.

My son is serving his second tour in Iraq. Thie first time as a Marine and now as an army soldior. He joined the Marines when he was 18 years old and although as a mother I worry and wish he were home I am very proud that he serves his country proudly.He is the father if 3 beautiful daughters under the age of 5 and would much prefer to be with them. I cannot believe that anyone is surprised by the council’s action. The city has been in he clutches of the far left, anti-military, anti-moderate, anti-thought crowd for a long time. The irony is that they are free to practice such obvious lunacy because they are protected by the same military they belittle. Of course their funds should be cut, as much as is legally possible. Funding should become so difficult to obtain that the citizens of Berkley who do support America and its military finally tire of being represented by such cowardly ingrates and vote them all out. Misguided leadership is apparently at the helm of the city Council in Berkeley.

The men and women of our great military fight for the freedom of speech for all, however, I can’t believe that the majority of Berkeley residents support removing the Marines. Those in Berkeley that oppose the removal of the Marines need to speak up.

The Marine Corp recruiters will stay in Berkeley which will provide an opportunity for a normal offspring of the liberals to serve our country and protect our countries values.

As an American Veteran, Voter and Taxpayer, I think the city of Berkley should be completely disenfranchised. All Federal monies, incentives and any other assistance should be immediately and irrecoverably revoked! Who are they to think that they know better than Joe Average on the street who might just be intelligent as well as patriotic? I enlisted at 17, BEFORE I graduated High School, and knew EXACTLY what I was getting into. Common sense dictated then, as it does now, that nothing is certain. I asked many questions before joining and if I didn’t like the answer I probed further. All Americas youth are not the lambs that Berkley sees them as, some are the lions who keep us safe. It sounds like the legislators consider themselves above the people whom they represent.

My husband & I live in the Sacramento county and visit the Berkley and San Francisco area often. We strongly disagree with the views of the City of Berkley but am not surprised by their actions. I hope the marines stay and put a pen in the hands of the city council and show them the meaning of “simper fi”. God Bless our soliders for giving the City Council the freedom to speak up even if it is against them.

All federal funding should be eliminated for the city of Berkeley. They only have the right to voice their outrageous and idiotic opinions because of the freedom obtained through our MILITARY STRENGTH. If there are any thinking citizens in the city of Berkeley, I do hope they move to elect a more rational group of city leaders. Let the silly people march around waving pink things, ignore them, because something else will distract them momentarily, and withhold funding in the meantime. In my opinion, our country would be a better place if everyone was required to serve at least two years in the military.

First – thanks for this forum to respond. Also thanks to Senator DeMint for his initiative to hold out Federal funds. I immediately e-mailed Missouri Senator Bond to request that he join Senator DeMint in that effort, and to ask President Bush to also support it. Between the freaks we see in this protest crowd and their “friends” in San Francisco the whole State seems to be going down the toilet. Do the rest of U. S. tax payers want to support this crowd? I hope not.

My son is a Marine and about to be deployed to Iraq in March. He has voluntarily joined because of his love for this country and his patriotism. He is defending their rights to their freedom of speech. I do not deny their right to protest but to disparage the Marines and the military is unforgivable! Their funding should be denied!! I vote for that whole-heartedly!

Why don’t these self-righteous and arrogant protesters put their energies into women’s rights (or lack therof) in the Middle East and Africa? I suspect they don’t have the courage or resolve to do so.

I do not live far from Berkeley. I will not again support their economy by dining or shopping in that city.

I support all efforts to pull federal funds from Berkeley as a result of their offensive attempt at pushing the USMC out of town. This is upsetting on so many levels, not the least of which is that those in Berkeley are on TV stating that these kids are not smart enough to make good life decisions. Our Marines are bright, and brave, and true, and when a possible recruit walks into a USMC office, he/she is given a choice to work hard, sacrifice greatly, and possibly wear the name of a U.S. Marine. To make the statement that the Marine recruiters are somehow undermining the ability of these young heroes to make a good decision is ridiculous. Because Code Pink doesn’t believe in war does not mean that anyone who disagrees with them, and sees the honor in serving their country, does not have brains. How arrogant to make that assumption, and how wrong! God Bless all in our Armed Forces and thanks for your service.

The best way to protest Code Pink, the mayor and the city council stance on booting the Marines out of Berkeley is economically. I for one will never drive through, visit, stay, dine or vacation in Berkeley until the mayor and the city council are removed or recalled. What bothers me more, is that, city officials having the same dim-witted view continue to be re-elected, running on a platform of bashing the military. Isn’t there anyone in Berkeley ready to boot these liberals out of office or have all of you already left town? A city mayor in Idaho.

I lived in San Fran for about a year and what I saw in Berkley the Marines shall be happy to leave. Is Berkley still part of the United States (tounge in cheek)?

I have ancestors who have fought in our countries many conflicts beginning with the Revolutionary War. I totally recent Berkerley’s view of the Marines and their Recruting Center and whole hearrtedly support DeMint’s proposal to demand the denial of any Federal taxes to that city (the same with San Francisco). All Federal funding should be stopped immediately.

I am angry and ashamed that this group has brought such humiliation to the State of California.

This is unbelievable, I live in Fort Walton Beach,Fl a big military town. What our troops have done for us not to mention what their families give up for us is such a blessing and here we have miserable people undermining americans not to mention sons, husbands, wifes, etc. that risk their lifes so we can feel safe and live everyday to the fulliest, while they are living in harsh conditions without their loved ones to protect these slimy people. Our country should think more likd Demint, we should close all federal offices there and we should cut them off completely. This is a disgrace, and I can’t believe people in office their, like the governor of cali. has not put a stop to this. The Presidental
Campaigns should be speaking out on this manner.

THE CITY OF BERKELEY IS DEAD WRONG AND SHOULD BE PUNISHED BY LOSS OF FEDERAL FUNDING

My nephew is gay and bipolar living at the time in Palm Springs, Ca. off his medication and going down hill. He called his younger cousin for help, a Marine station in Ca. He received time off to take care of him and get him the medical help he needed. My gay nephew now referes to my son as his hereo. How can the city of Berkeley be so inconsiderate of our Hereos.

as an over 20 year veteran-usairforce-i see once again people refusing to use good old common sense. i think the people of berkleley have shown once again we have a long way to go in this country when it comes to national defense. as with anything else we need recruiting to maintain our military strength. when our military personnel are called upon to perform their duties, it does not matter where they’re from. aren’t the people of berkeley fortunate to be excluded from any threat that may occur at any time, or any place in these united states of ours. i hope all of the monies allocated to them from the federal gov. is held back. has their governor offered an opinion as of yet. when you protest against the military, you are saying ” i will never need your service”, now that’s a thought…love your reporting-please don’t stop…

Something drastic needs to be done, about this disgraceful city. Why don’t they just secede from the United States. Can the United States secede from them?? Our congress should do something about this. All government offices should withdraw from Berkley, and I would hope that everyone would boycott such a sicko place. God help us.

If everyone starts spending their money outside of Berkley I don’t think it would take the business leaders very long to put their support behind the Marines.
