I served for four years in the United States Marine Corps. It saddens me to see the fighting here in America over this office. If it weren’t for these men and women in the Armed Forces we would not have free speech. Our freedom was given by those that gave their lives. These that protest this recruiting station needs to have their rights taken away and them they may wake up from this drug induced sleep.(not by legal means). Those that stand there chained to the door are maybe those that have no job and have nothing better to do except to stir up a news media for some air time. I say they need to get a life and I will continue to support our military. My son is in Iraq right now to allow them to have this right. Thanks for the space, Greg from Lodi Ca.

I suggest that the mayor of Berkeley and his council members go to Arlington National Cementery and reflect on their OUTRAGEOUS positions regarding our military. The fact that my tax dollars go to support their institution makes my blood boil. God Bless Senator DeMint for his efforts,its refreshing to see someone with character in Washington.

Dear Senator DeMint……my wife and I are thrilled there are some in Washington as yourself that make sense. The City of Berkeley and the college are liken to a young child who is ’spoiled’ (won’t go there this time) and has everything but refuses to share with his ’siblings’ but just wants it his way. Sorry young man you ‘can’t have your cake and eat too’ the expression goes. This (Berkeley) is just another way certain ‘groups’ are doing what they want regardless of the circumstances and typical of ‘in your face’ and enough is enough. We are starting to look like ‘chumps’ doesn’t anyone else care. We again thank you for caring.

My fear of this mess in Bizerkeley, is that lots of noise will be made for a few weeks, or maybe even a couple of months, and nothing will done to either the Berkeley City Council, or The City of Berkeley. Congress men and women will puff out their chests, make pretty speaches, yet, it will all blow-over and be forgotten. I am a disabled, retired, combat, veteran – From Northern California and had to endure the abuse from people like those in berkeley’s city council for years.

Do we never learn from history? Multiculturism sounds pretty good until you realize that it is a little too premature to foster this ideology on the world, especially here in the Uited States. There is a culture out there committed to the destruction of anyone who does not believe in their culture.
Before WWII pacifists took the position of accomodation instead of defending their countries. I don’t think we have to remind people, well maybe the generation of the sixties, that this led to their being taken over by the Nazies who had grand plans for expanding their ideals and discriminatory beliefs. Without the marines, army and navy, airforce of our great country and England and other allies we would all have been either annihilated or subjegated to the nazie party. We would all probably be speaking german. The many servicemen who gave their lives and limbs to protect this great land deserve better than the treatment of the likes of code pink and the most intolerable treatment from the Berkeley City Council. I wonder if their was a natural diaster or an attack by those who wish to do us harm if Berkley citizens would reject the military.

The period before WWII should be a lesson to the people of this world today. There is a culture out there that is committed to destroy free thinking people who do not accept their culture or religious fanatisism. They will not be deterred by some people who are willing to capitulate the freedoms that we enjoy in this country. If they think for one minute that the enemies of our society would not attack if much of the country felt like the people in berkley then they are sadly mistaken.

Any human being that I know including myself abhors the thought of war. But we had better be grateful that we have people willing to make the supreme sacrifice to protect us and should at the very least show them some respect. Having lived through WWII having lost a relative and a husband wounded I can assure the thought of war is not at all a happy thought. But we had better realize we have not become a civilized enough world to take the misguided path to our own devestation and prehaps destruction. This country that has given these people the freedom to speak and act do not have the right to impune the integrety of the people who may some day be their bunker of safety against cruel and inhuman acts from radical people.

I am not all that surprised that this kind of action is coming from the Peoples Republic of California. That is the hotbed of anti-American, anti military sentiment and this is just another shining example. They shouldn’t get one dime of any money till they OPENLY and NATIONALLY apologize. Each council member should apologize and should be made to travel to Iraq and see what some of the finest men and women our country has to offer are accomplishing despite their best effort to undermine them and their effort.
You can bet that no one on the city council has served anything except their own interest.

Dear Jamie,
This is a copy of a letter I wrote to the mayor of Berkeley. I sent a copy to the City Council Members and told them I intended to send it along to you and other news/talk radio stations. Hope you are as outraged as I am by this.

Mayor Bates,

I am appalled at the recent assault on our military and specifically the US Marines. It is shameful that you would condone such behavior. By changing the terminology to say “We are not against the military, we are against war” is in itself a conflict of statement. If you claim to support our military, your actions betray you. A common declaration Berkeley avows is tolerance, yet, you’re attempting to deny our Marines to do their job. The job that secures your rights to freedom you don’t feel the military is entitled. If ever there was a double standard, Berkeley defines it so graphically.

Your city council members are under the misguided assumption that pro-American, pro-military people are stupid. The job of our military is to secure our safety and sometimes that means war. To have the freedoms we enjoy are worth fighting for and we have only the military to thank for that freedom. So, please save your politically correct psyco-babble for the liberal dolts.

I may not own a cooperation, or think I might make a huge financial impact solely by boycotting anything produced, sold or provided to or by your city, but I know a lot of people who do. I will make it my mission to tell, email and call everyone I know and ask for their joint efforts to support a boycott on Berkeley.

Remember, when you mess with the Marines, you mess with their moms, dads, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, friends and the list goes on…I hope you get the picture. We are a family and I consider all Marines and their families mine as well.

FYI. It is our Marines who are first in and last out of a conflict. Instead of supporting those that lack character by attacking them you might consider thanking them for their service and your freedom to make the choice.

No surprise here. I was assigned to the staff of Commander, Pacific Area in Alameda, CA 1984-88. I took German language classes at UC Berkeley. I drove to classes in a car with a USCG Academy decal on it. After the car was egged and scratched, it became apparent I couldn’t drive it to the campus. Our German instructor was always soliciting her students to sign petitions for Nuclear-Free Bay Area. I always refused, citing defense of our country. Fortunately, I was never punished grade-wise. I feel as though the city council of Berkely is greatly overstepping the bounds of propriety and patriotism. The military is serving us, preserving our way of life, many at the cost of their lives, and others at the cost of losing an arm, leg, or their mental and emotional health. They need to be applauded, and praised for what they have already accomplished in this war, and encouraged to complete the work begun.

Since when have all you republicans become such federalists? The federal government has a right to be there, why? What about states’ rights? California alone pays 14% of all federal taxes. So maybe we should simply refuse to pay those federal taxes. This may effectively starve the military and the rest of the country to death. Then you will see senators like DeMint, from South Carolina (the first state to secede from the Union, remember), crying when they do not have enough federal funds for their pet-projects. It disgusts me that South Carolina gets a $1.35 return on every $1 they spend in federal taxes, while California gets only $0.80 for its same dollar (fiscal year 2005). And yet DeMint has the audacity to argue, as many of you here have, that California does not deserve some $2 million. Ridiculous. We are the biggest player in the market. We set the tone, especially in our own state, not you.

I can’t even express in words what I feel for what the liberals are doing in Berkeley CA and in other places in this country. How unbelievable that this would even happen to our Military–the ones who gave their lives throughout history for the American people. As a mother of a soldier who is currently doing his 3rd tour in Iraq and of a daughter in the USAF Academy I am appalled and extremely upset. My father-in-law was a prisoner of war in WWII and my dad served during the Korean War so you could say that this strikes at my heart. I’m starting to feel that the American people no longer deserve the sacrifices that my son gives to his country. Why should he put his life on hold and in danger to protect people of this caliber? America is being led astray by the left and in my opinion the entire democratic party. Much blood has been spilled by America’s sons and daughters but they are called baby killers. Gee, I wonder how many protesters have had abortions!!!!! Something must be done about this but what happens on a daily basis in Hollywood seems to be the important news item of the day. If Berkeley has a massive earthquake who would go to aide the citizens? Could it be the National Guard! Hope not!

I am very alarmed and disgusted, I sent the following email to Mayor Bates:

Dear Sir,

I hold this country and the people who serve it close to my heart. It alarms and offends me that a town can stop the recruitment activity in their area for our countries armed forces. I hope that I am not mistaken in stating that a good deal of the countries around the world require at least their young men to serve two years in the military to learn to protect the country that they live in. Our country has in times of peace a voluntary system that depends on select locations to recruit the people that we need to serve and protect. The military has many opportunities for young men and women that may not be available to them otherwise. Individuals are informed of all of the pros and cons of military service when they meet with a recruiter and are not forced to sign on the dotted line. Given your communities stand on the war in Iraq and military recruiting, should the community of Berkley be left to fend for themselves if a terrorist attack occurred in your area? Fortunately the military doesn’t pick and choose when it comes time to protect those in need, including the people of Afghanistan and Iraq. Please don’t insult the intelligence and integrity of the people that choose to serve our country by asking them to go outside of your community to enlist in a military that protects you regardless of your personal feelings. Remember, “United We Stand, Divided We Fall”. If our country continues down this path surely we will fall!

The taxpayers of Berkeley have the right to decide whether or not the military is welcome in their town and the federal government has the responsibility to act accordingly, in this case, to close the recruiting center, however, the federal government also has the right to deny federal funding to the town of Berkeley in response. Whether or not we agree with the reasoning behind Berkeley’s decision is irrelevant and I believe that we can, or should, all agree that it would be unacceptable and unconstitutional for the federal government to impose the military on a State or town in which the majority view it as unwanted/unwelcome and that it would also be unreasonable for those taxpayers to expect the federal government to continue providing monetary assistance in such cases.

Regardless what your views of the war in Iraq, what the Berkeley City Council should not go unpunished. I urge full support of Senator Jim DeMint’s legistlation “Semper Fi Act of 2008″ from everyone who supports our brave men and women in the US Armed Forces. Any retraction from Berkeley should be ignored. Give all federal and state money that would have gone to the City of Berkeley to the US Marine Corp.. They (Berkeley) have every right to voice their opinions and I have every right to express mine. I will be contacting my US Senators to gain their support of this bill.
