Update: Berkeley Giving Marines The Boot

Senator Jim DeMint told me on the show today that even if you don’t live in Berkeley, he needs your help to send a message to Berkeley to back off their demand the Marines be sent packing. Berkeley’s mayor, a retired Army Captain, told the Marines he’s ready to get them out of their lease early so they can go! Senator DeMint has proposed cutting in excess of $2 million in funding to Berkeley for their actions against the Marines.

This is the place to speak up if you want to tell the city council that is booting the Marines to stop their offensive and likely politically motivated action. Read the comments to my post just below for links on how you can also tell your congressional representatives we must support our troops too!!!

I am ashamed at the childish, self centered, and ignorant manner in which our citizens have carried on since 9/11.
Thanks be to you that America is no longer a “super power”.
Now, we are just big. Because we cannot unite, we will no longer be number one and will get to follow the new leader. Of course it hasn’t happened yet, but the course is set and it will happen.
I hope that you are happy with yourselves, as it is childish acts like this that are the root of it.

The damage that you have done to the office of the president while you have been attacking and slandering the current president will never be repaired, and the presidents to follow will never have the same authority or ability to lead as they have in the past.

Way to go :-(

only two people have ever died for us: Jesus Christ for our sins and The AMERICAN SOLDIER for our freedom. GOD bless our SOLDIERS, GOD bless AMERICA. Where would we be w/o our military? California is one state I never plan to visit!!

It is hard for me to look at the Berkley City Council as AMERICANS. I believe their comments, their stance and their communistic pink organization position so preclude them from ever receiving Federal Funds for anything. What a slap in the face for every American that has ever served their country so these idiots can have the freedom to express their unAmerican stance. I’m absolutely sickened that you live in my country. I would hope that the entire city of Berkley be engulfed in a huge earthquake never to be heard from again. I will never vote for a Senator or Congressman supports any Federal Funding to this unAmerican City and it’s stupid residents.

Shame on anyone and everyone who is in favor of ousting the Marines. Those young men give all so we may have these freedoms to go to Colleges and every other thing we deem to do.All in favor of removing them should serve a year in the Military.

Members of the Berkeley city council and past members as well may be kickbacks from the 60’s-70’s when Berkeley was the drug mecca for hallucinogens and they may be suffering from flashbacks!!! ONLY idiots who have nothing better to do would think up something as ignorant and insulting. Maybe the Marines should kick their asses out!

My grandfather came to America from Italy at the turn of the 20th Century (1906). He didn’t speak English, didn’t know anyone here, had about $5 (USD) to his name, and sailed half way around the world. He was “processed” through Ellis Island and given work on the railroad for about $5 a day. Think about it: He comes here to Amercia with $5 and immediately starts earning $5 a day! Hmmmmmm. Not bad, eh?

He soon learns (a) English, (b) the Constitution and by-laws of America so he can become a LEGALIZED United States citizen, (c) the value of saving a few dollars to buy a business [produce stand(s)], & (d) the value of working for yourself versus someone else.

I say all of this to say that he would flip over in his gracve, jump out of that same grave, and verbally confront ANYONE who either spoke a word against America, our military, or any opportunities available to ANYONE, IF they are willing to work hard and take a chance. He lived the “American dream” because he knew poverty, lack of opportunity, small-minded people, nay sayers, etc., but was willing to risk it all to escape!

These fools in Berkeley are “raping” the community by spreading the virus of hatred and fear to the very people who they serve (and, ironically who elected them). This rape is vicious, because it demeans our military recruiters and other military personnel and castigates them to something slightly less vomitous than a bloody kotex that a menstruating women flushes down the toilet. It sickens me to the point of nausea to think that these communist, socialist anti-military clowns are put in positions of authority by people who are apparently as “goofy and twisted” as their elected leaders. Talk about mind-numb robots, these Berkleley folks take the cake.

Please tell me that someone is going to stand up to these self-professed “protectors” of our “freedoms” before we won’t have any freedom left to protect. And please tell me that there is some media outlet somewhere, anywhere with the guts, brains, and determination to get these people on tape so we, the real American people can see and hear them with our own eyes and our own ears. I thought the job of a “real journalist” was to “seek out and find the truth”?

Fellow Americans, if this is not a “wake-up call” and a “call to action”, I don’t know what it will take to shake you our of your slumber and engage you in the battle, the battle for the very soul of our once-great-and-can-be-great-again America. Thanks for allowing me the opportunity of posting my opinion.

Having lived in the Bay Area during 70s to early 80s my wife and I are thoroughly familiar with the political shenanigans seemingly perpetrated by the Berkeley socialists. whether at City Council level and/or other City agencies, so Code Pink found an obvious partner in their pathetic dual actions against our Marine Corps’ recruiting station in Berkeley. Fortunately, as many previous comments have alluded to, members of Congress are preparing to take action against federal funding for Berkeley. Equally important the only GOP State Representative in the Bay Area, Rep. Guy Huston, has implemented legislative action to terminate 2008 State Funding for Berkeley’s roads/highways maintenance and new construction. But the predominately Democrat legislature most likely will reject such action, and it will never reach the Gov’s desk for signature.

God Bless America and its Military.

Comment by Bjorn Sorensen

I`m outraged by these Berkeley schmucks. The brave men and women of the military deserves all the backing and support they can get, instead of this back-stabbing attack from petty little minds in a council I refuse to believe is representative for the population of Berkeley.

Never the less, here is a clear message all the way from Norway; Don`t mess with the troops. They are serving with their lives on the line for the purpose of making the world a better and safer place.

Including the world of the members of the Berkeley counsil, allthough they don`t seem to understand anything in their well fed darkness of mind. Shame on them!
I hope the people of Berkeley will have these politicians replaced by election at the earliest convenience. As it now stands they cast a black shadow over the community.
A disgrace seen all over the world.

And thank Move America Forward for adressing the issue. Melanie Morgan for President!!

I have lived in California near the bay area for 27 years and served in the Marine Corps. I also served as a Marine recruiter. Berkeley does not represent the majority of people in California. As an example a year or so ago San Jose had a large billboard of a what I think was a hometown Marine or a recruiting poster. The professional sports teams in California all respect the military and offer programs or discounts for the military. The Padres and Chargers in particular. San Diego has a high concentration of military and has always treated the military with respect. I am part of a large segment of people in California that came fron the midwest or back east. We brought our values with us.

Its unfornuate that only the radicals seem to get attention. Be aware there are other areas in the nation that are starting to worry me such as a Chicago School District attempting to block letting recruiters come into High Schools and people in Vermont wanting to succed from the United States. I think or hope the lack of political response is due to no cares what Berkely thinks, Berkeley should willifully give back the Federal funds to make their point.

I am thoroughly disgusted with these anti-Americans at Berkeley! If they don’t want the protection of our military and don’t appreciate the freedoms they have in our country due to our military and American ideals, THEY SHOULD FIND ANOTHER COUNTRY TO LIVE IN!!

We are a military family, both Army and the United States Marine Corps. Our brave men and women serving now and in the past have protected us and the rights we take for granted, many with the loss of life, both stateside and abroad. Now, the city of Berkely would like to step in and take those freedoms from us???!!! How dare they???

Those who think that we can hold hands with the enemy and sing “Kum-ba-yah” and all will be peaceful would do well to live in countries that have been ravaged by dictators, lives threatened for thinking differently, speaking out against the atrocities, or simply existing!!!

The United States Marine Corps is protecting us, as we say, “covering our six” while we go about our ordinary, work-a-day lives. They serve proudly not only in this current war, but across the world, often without the creature comforts we take for granted.

Wake up, Berkely!! Who would you call on to protect you should the enemy be at the door of your very homes? Would you want the Marines to be less prepared and highly skilled than they are? Think twice before you have the idea that what is happening in the rest of the world could not happen here!

Have you so quickly forgotten 9/11? Do you think it couldn’t happen again? What about homeland security? The rights that you want to take away from our Marines could turn into a slippery slope… those very rights could be taken away from you, if it were not for those who choose to live their lives serving their country!

I watched a video of the Berkeley City Council trashing the Military and then the video of the Code Pink members physically blocking access to the Marine property. My first thought was: Immature selfish school yard bullies. There are other, more peaceful ways to display one’s displeasure with our Military, the war on Terrorism or just hatred of America in general. Considering the Police did nothing and the way Code Pink physically got in the face of people trying to enter the Marine Recruiting office, there is no doubt their goal was to entice a physical response.

As a disabled Veteran of Vietnam, I am well aware of the terror of war, but I am also aware of another terror inflicted on our returning troops by an ungrateful Nation, seemingly full of anti-war protestors who have a very loud voice and portray our Military as nothing more than “mass murdering outcasts.” We didn’t lose the Vietnam War; persons with the mindset of the Code Pinks, the Berkeley City Council and spineless Politicians lost it for us.

Yes, we have Free speech but that right is not meant to be abusive and detrimental to our freedoms. We are a Nation of Laws and it’s time that we start enforcing those laws. All Federal funds to Berkeley should cease immediately and not be reinstated for at least 5-years. The Mayor, those on the City Council who voted for this insanity and the “appease the Mayor” Police Chief should be fired immediately

It is hard to determine where free speech becomes insurrectional. I don’t have a clear answer for that but I do think we should shut off all funds to the city just as funds were shut off for Universities that refused to allow Military recruiting.
Perhaps we should start a proposition to close Cal Berkekey!

Comment by Nora Kuester

After watching the video produced by Jim DeMint one can only sit back and wonder, “Are these people really Americans?” It is beyond my comprehension that ANY American could possibly say such things. Do you suppose they really believe what they’re saying, or do they just like to hear themselves speak? Because what they are saying is so offensive to me, so absolutely foreign, so truly UN-American it beggars the imagination. I am a naturalized American and so proud of that fact, and of this country. I LOVE being an American and I LOVE America. I understand the Berkeley City Council is now back-pedaling… mmm… I wonder why? The wimps!

Comment by Denise Bellante

I know longer shop, visit or look for entertainment in the city of San Francisco because of their political stand on our military. I have now added Berkeley, or Biserkley, (a city I used to live in) to my list. I will be happy that my tax dollars do not go to support or aid a city that is guaranteed freedom of speech and freedom to organize, but do not afford the same privileges to the very ones who secure those rights for them. I thank the military and am proud to support them. I have had relatives, including fathers, husband and son serving in every war. Thank you again for serving your country and those who reside pretty comfortably in it.

Comment by Robert Wateski

As a older Marine GySgt, Vietnam Veteran, I think that only taking 2 million from them is not enough. All Federal funding should be stopped and the Mayor and entire City Council should be brought up on charges of inciting a riot and allowing people to trespass on Govt Property. I am sure a good Federal Prosecuter could come up with a few additional charges. Use the courts, they try to.

When people stand in the way of a Recruiter during War, that is an act of treason, not free speech.
Free speech only goes as far as not interfering with someone else’s rights. Once you do that it is no longer free speech. That is why there are libal and slander laws.

Take all Federal monies from Berkly and the University also. They would then wake up.

Comment by Jim Beaty

I oppose any local government which is performing any acts that oppose the recruidting of military persons. Who do they think they are to enjoy the protection of the miltiary without making a loyal acknowledgement and contribution to sustaining the military? The people of Berkeley are living in a dream-world. For just such reasons I give thanks with all my heart that I had the sense to leave California for good in 1987. It was weird then, but it’s thousands of times weirder — and increasingly malefic — now. And the infuriating thing is, they sure don’t mind the money that comes into Berkeley from ROTC and other things connected with the military. “Come to beautiful Berkeley, spend all your money here, and go home.” And damn Berkeley forever for dumping on our men and women under arms!

Comment by Audrey Morrow

If Berkley doesn’t secede on her own, can we push her out?

Michael, great comment. Are you from CA too?? Thank Goodness, the Marines and all our military have fought and died so you can say such stupid words!! If not for them, you would be speaking Japanese or did yo forget Pearl Harbor?????

Comment by June E. Knipper

I have sent emails to everyone on the council, the mayor and the rent control people in Berkeley telling them they are the scum of the earth and they have blackened their name across this nation. I told them to drop the “U.S.” from their address because they are not worthy of being considered a part of this great nation.

How can we get word to Senator DeMint we strongly approve of his bill and how can we tell the congress we demand they support his proposal to remove all financial aid to these treasonous people, their city and college.

Any info you can afford me regarding this matter will be greatly appreciated.

Comment by Doug

Previous poster is off his meds. Or on the wrong ones. This isn’t about “different thinking”. It’s about respect of others and their rights – just like for Code Pink who has been given special privilages to harrass, libel, and just be basic pains in the butt. As a civilian tax payer, I for one, am highly grateful the Marines – and any other military presence – are here to protect my family. I don’t think a Code Pink yahoo could/would do that.

Comment by michael

Yea how dare they have a say in what goes on in their city! The nerve! I hope they lose those funds because we certainly can’t have anyone thinking differently than the military can we? No sir! In fact now that the gov’t is using private businesses to spy on us and to use deadly force in the event of martial law (InfraGuard), it’s clear that businesses should be telling government what to do! Right?

In fact let’s kick out those pansy politicians who are voted into office by the lame and ignorant “citizens” of this country and just install a General and a CEO in charge! That’ll show ‘em!

Comment by Shannon of SD, CA

This makes me sick on my stomach…

What gets me is that they are targeting a recruiting station and claiming this war is creating “Unjust Mass Murders” when all throughout the city stand numerous abortion clinics, where mass murders take place on a daily basis!

But you don’t see them protesting outside their doors? Why? Because it is considered “pro choice” and that type of killing or murder is ok. Well as far as I know, enlisting in service is also a choice. These men and women choose to enlist and defend this country. And we are a safer place because of them. We do not have a draft. Just like the police choose to “protect and serve” so do the military, just on a grander scale.

Who do these whining little socialist call first when they need help? Who helped them during the horrible earthquakes? Not this Code Pink Anti-American Group… Let’s see who they turn to for help when our country suffers another attack of terrorism. Nobody loves a war or the death that comes with it. But what is the alternative? Do we fight the war there or bring the fight here to our own country? Either way, we MUST support our troops and not only when it’s convenient to do so.

If I were the military, they would be the very last speck in the U.S. I would help. Let granny and the Code Pink come to their cities rescue in the time of need.

I am all for free speech, but sometimes this country goes too far. And frankly, I am sick of it…

Thank you to our Marines, Soldiers, and Sailors for protecting my freedoms with your life. Some of us (Berkley) are simply not worthy of your bloodshed…

Comment by Sherry Dominguez

Where is the respect?! Men and women gave their lives for this great country. Families, friends, loved ones grieved and suffered over the loss of these beloved hero’s. Many of these returning warriors will live out their lives, and have lived out their lives in untold pain and suffering, along with their families. With tears and rage I charge Berkley Ca. with treason!

The VFW has come out strong regarding Berkeley city council’s giving Marines the boot. THE VFW chief also is encouraging the 2.3 million members of the VFW and its Auxiliaries to email the city council.

“The resolution is a direct insult to not only the Marines Corps, but also to all members of the nation’s armed forces,” said George Lisicki, national commander of the VFW, the nation’s largest organization of combat veterans. “Their recent actions represent a calculated effort to legalize harassment of one of our nation’s most elite military organizations. If there were ever a prize awarded for lack of appreciation and awareness for what our military has contributed to preserving our way of life, the Berkeley City Council would certainly win the trophy.”

Here is a link to the story: http://www.vfw.org

Comment by R. Veal

These city council members, and others like them, are constantly saying “We Support the Troops, We just Don’t Support the War”. That makes about as much sense as saying that you support Police Officers, but you don’t support them enforcing the law. And I have to wonder what our men and women serving in various combat zones around the world think when they read stories of the hatred groups like Code Pink, and the Berkley City Council have for them. I would ask these organizations to think of how their antics hurt our soldiers, but that would require the Berkley/Code Pink crowd to care about a cause bigger than themselves, and think about people other than themselves.
I don’t think they are capable, so I won’t waste my time talking to them.

Comment by Satff Sergent G - Army Reserves

As a VOLUNTEER member of the armed forces, I’m absolutely appalled by the actions of Berkley’s City Council, as well as Code Pink. I am sick and tired of people telling me that that they support me and other soldiers, but not this war. Excuse, me you blockheaded simpletons, but that’s an oxymoron. You cannot truly support someone if you don’t support what they are actually doing. That is the exact same thing as saying that you don’t believe in, or support, a homosexual lifestyle, but you support homosexual rights.

Additionally, I’d like to make a comment based on the city council’s minutes from the Jan. 29 meeting; specifically, where the council wants to direct the City Attorney to investigate the options for enforcing Chapter 13.28 of the Berkeley Municipal Code (prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation) with respect to the military recruiting offices in Berkeley. If I remember correctly from my high school civics classes, I believe that the attorney will find the following: no state or local government, or agency of such, can “sue” the federal government. Now, for those that don’t know, the Marines, and all other armed forces are part pf the federal government.

Thank you to Senator Dement for you legislative support in this matter. I sincerely feel that the threat of losing federal funding gave the coucil’s backside a great deal of the “pucker factor”!

PLEASE KEEP THIS IN MIND: It is not the reporter that allows us the freedom of the press; it is not the poet that allows us the freedom of speech; It is not the exhibitionist that allows us the freedom of expression; and it is not the preacher that allows us the freedom of religion….. it is the soldier that is willing to sacrifice everything that provides these and all other freedoms of this great nation. It seems that many people have forgotten this fact.

I completely agree with Senator DeMint in denying funding to a community with nothing but contempt for our government and our military. But I feel just as strongly that EVERY House and Senate member, as well as the presidential candidates, should be expected to take a public stand on this. (I feel certain that I could predict the stand that McCain, Romney and Huckabee would take, but I would be very interested in how Clinton and Obama would respond.) And Californians should demand to know where Nancy Pelosi stands! Let’s demand that all our representatives in Washington clearly state their position–it will tell us a lot about them.

Comment by Paul and Nora Sanders Conway, South Carolina

As very Proud parents of a Sgt. in the United States Marine Corps, who I might add, served his country bravely and proudly in Iraq two different tours; we are totally disgusted with the city of Bekeley and it’s citizens. We support proudly and wholeheartedly our Sen. Demint from South Carolina and would love to see other Senators from all over this great nation helping alongside him in his effort to pull Federal Funding from this city. This should be done in any other city or state who disgraces themselves with such total Lack of loyalty to our Great Nation and/or our Brave military as this city has displayed. I am sickened each time I hear any of them yell and scream “Freedom of Speech” when none of them seem to understand exactely what the statement fully means and certainly seem to not have the foggiest clue as to who actually ensures that they will be able to maintain that same right……to which they abuse so shamefully!!!

Comment by Dell

I previously referred to the people of California as nut-jobs, kooks and the like, of course I did not mean all of them, I do realize there are good people living there as well. However, the people in places like Berkeley and San Francisco keep electing these nut cases.

The Berkeley City Council did not just happen, the people of Berkeley voted these dim witted, borderline treasonous people to their positions. Now Berkeley must reap what they have sown and should feel the full impact of total rejection from the rest of the country. As far as I’m concerned they should be treated as lepers, avoided at all costs. Someone else mentioned a total ban on going or doing business there, that would be a good start along with all federal funding being withdrawn and severe penalties incurred even if they should have a change of heart. If they catch on fire, fine don’t call our military to help you put you out, that of course would be hypocritical on your part.

The City Council of Berkeley would have fit right into Saddam’s regime, way to go you anti American scum.

Comment by Jerri Jones & Family

I have sent emails to both of my Senators from Oklahoma asking for them to follow Senator DeMint’s lead. I do defend the right of people to protest but for the City Government to give preferential treatment to one opposing view over another is blatantly trouncing on the civil rights of the other group and of the innocent citizens going about their business as usual around this nonsense. Also, I still do not understand why these Code Pink protestors were allowed to chain themselves blocking the office for 7 hours? Isn’t this illegal? If I went to the City Council Building next week with my family and protested their illegal actions against the Military Recruiting office by chaining myself to the front doors, wouldn’t I be removed immediately? And I doubt if I would only receive a ticket.
We the people in the FLYOVER STATES love and appreciate the sacrifices that our Military Men and Women make for us. I will request from anyone who will listen and even those who will not that the Federal Funding given to Berkeley be STOPPED immediately.

We are going to have to be less tolerant of this law breaking Anti-American behavior. I contacted my representatives and voiced my support for pulling the $2million from Berkeley. Free speech yes, but where is some of this Anti- American feeling coming from….

well… the federally funded Center for Civic Education has an agenda. Their program,” We the People”, uses our tax dollars to publish Anti-American textbooks for 5th, 8th, and 12th grade students – everything is free, teacher training, textbooks, and the cost of students simulated congressional hearings to the tune of 30 million + a year! One example of the distorted presentation of our constitution is their high school text, WE THE PEOPLE, THE CITIZEN AND THE CONSTITUTION, It has 16 pages on the 1st Amendment (free speech) and ZERO pages to the 10th Amendment (the doctrine of limited government) Do you think their is an agenda here? There is much, much more in this textbook. They have a sweet setup, they get support from the business world by the “friend of a friend” method, and these supporters have never read the textbook.

Research and you decide. The Center for Civic Education is not a friend of critical thinking and the up coming generations and their Anti-American agenda needs to be exposed and our 30 million of tax dollars sent elsewhere.

Mary

I am a retired Air Force NCO and both my sons have served in the military one Air Force and one Army. I don’t understand how a city such as Berkeley can insult our military so easiliy. The federal funding should no go to such a city with this type view. Then they gave the antiwar group a parking slot and a permit right in front of the Recruiting center show what type people are in there city counsel. The major problem is that this country is not at war but just the military. The atitude must change for us to win the war on terror even more immediately we must win in Afghanistan and Iraq.
I was a civilian contractor in Afghanistan for 18 months and we are making a difference in the lives of the people. We give them hope.

Jeff Billups

Comment by Mike and Merri Tyrrel

This is an outrage. I think taking away their funding is the least we should do. In our home alone, we have 54 years of honorable military service. There is nothing more honorable and noble than to serve your country especially in a time of war. It is not always easy, but when you have these liberals openly opposing what our country was founded on, it makes it even harder. If liberals like these take office, this country would fall to terrorism and tyranny quite quickly I’m sure since it would have no military to speak of. These people are spitting on the ideas that allow them to even spit. Instead, they should be saying Thank you.

“People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf. “ Georg Orwell.

Another thought…..the liberal media. Jane Fonda was declared a traitor. How has this country changed so much that this kind of thing is tolerable? I’m thinking that our only hope as a nation is to elect John McCain. The people of this nation need to search within themselves to figure out whether they enjoy their freedom. It’s not free. The council says this id “free speech”. I’m sure this is not what our founding fathers had in mind when they wrote the first amendment. This in not “free speech”. It’s blasphemous against our country. If they don’t like our country or it’s ELECTED leadership, maybe they should move on to another country and pull apart the fibers IT was built upon. Here’s a thought those in Berkeley should ponder.

“War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling that thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.” John Stuart Mill.

What has happened to the America I was brought up into? We honor our Armed forces and all who join & fight for our freedom! I’m from Southern California and I do NOT share the Berekley council’s stance on the Marine recruiters leaving the area.
Be careful of what you wish for. There wouldn’t be any support or foundation for Berkeley. Ying Lee what would you do with no support from our National Guard in case of a disaster?? I pray the U.S. Government stops the funds immediately! Red, white and Blue is much better than pink!
GO MARINES WE LOVE YA!!!

As a Navy Brat my Dad was in WWII and served 26 years and as Navy Wife my husband served over 20 years. I think that it is a disgrace to see a bunch of Whackos allowed to receive any funding. If Berkely is so unhappy why don’t they just leave this country. We would all be better off. As for their right to the First Amendment what about our rights and our safety. Who’s blood, sweat and tears gave them that right.

Trust me growing up in the Military was hard so was being a military spouse. If this is the thanks we get Berkely can shove it. It Code Pink hates the military so much let them fend for themselves.

Moveon.org must be proud of this after all they are the ones that called General Petraeus General Betray us. Hillary Clinton sure didn’t waste any time firing on our General. Now moveon.org supports Obama. This is a good example of the kind of future we have to look forward to thanks to people like Code Pink. I am sure that Nancy Pelosi is proud…

Enough is enough of this total disregard for our Men and Women in Uniform. The money saved by cutting off Berkely should go to help our troops.

As a retired USAF MSgt and USA citizen I am abhorred by the un-American & dispicable action of Berkeley to in anyway impede the lawful recruitment efforts of the United States Marines or any other military department. I strongly support Senator DeMint’s proposal to stop any and all federal funds to this un-American community. I will be urging my congressional representatives to actively join Senator DeMint in this effort.

I too am very ashamed that any city in the United States would take this stance against the men and women who serve us by giving their time and putting their lives in danger so that we may continue to live a secure life and not have to worry about terrorist being in control of us. Have you ever thought what your life might be like without these brave soldiers? They definitely don’t live like we do. In areas like Iraq and Afganistan, our sons and daughters are alot of the time living in situations the rest of us could not live in. It’s dirty, hot, (120 degrees in the summer in Iraq) and they might get to call home once a month if they are lucky. They have to constantly live with mortars flying into their camps day and night. You should be thanking them for doing a job that you are not willing to do. The least you can do is to alow them to stay in your community and continue recruiting men and women who do want to fight the fight so the rest of us can live our nice comfy lives. You should be very ashamed of yourselves if you are one of the people trying to run them out of town.

Comment by Jan

What is going on in Berkeley is almost beyond belief! Who do they think protects them both at home and abroad? What freedom would they have without brave, unselfish men and women in the military who are willing to risk their lives to protect this country? Ironically, the Code Pink protesters’ right to protest is insured by our military’s willingness to defend that right, as well all other rights. The very least they and all Americans can do is to show respect for and honor the service of the Marines and all other branches of the military. Instead, they are trying to kick them out of town. This is an outrage. I’m glad I don’t live there!

I fully support Sen. Jim Demint in his efforts to withhold any and all federal funds from the city of Berkeley, California. I am in the process of contacting my representatives to inform them of how I feel. I am retired military and proud of it. But I am not proud of the actions by the city of Berkeley. I encourage everyone to contact their representatives also. Marines – don’t give up any ground to these unAmericans!

Jamie, A message has to be sent to Berkeley city council, no funding! Also, I want to know how the candidates running for president feel about this matter, their answer will tell us a lot about their character, why haven’t any of them been asked? These young great marines are asked to defend this country, so the candidates who want to be their Commander In Chief can be asked a tough question!!!!!!! WHERE DO YOU STAND ON THIS ISSUE? Why is it that the extreme liberals think it is only their freedoms that need to be protected.
These people are not interested in other peoples rights. They are only concerned with their own agenda. What about the rights of an individual who wishes to serve his or her country.
It is disgusting the way they have protested the very people who gave them the freedom to speek as they wish.

It is however not surprising coming from a state where they so dispise drilling, power plants and industry. They do however want all of the services from the states that do allow the industries in their home areas. If you did a survey most of these people have nothing to do. Give them a job to help raise their tax base, because their funding should be permanently revoked. If you don’t support the USA then it should not support you.

As a father whose son has enlisted in the Air Force I dispise but respect the fact that he also has to defend these idiots rights.

END all funding to this city. Do not send my hard earned money to people that have not earned or deserve it.

Comment by Irene Brunet

I find myself sputtering, unable to articulate my disgust with and anger toward the Berkeley city council for their actions to ban the Marine recruiters. All I can think to say is “how dare they treat the brave and honorable men and women who serve our country this way.” The freedoms the citizens of Berkeley enjoy could not be sustained without a strong military. God bless the men and women of the U.S. military!

Comment by Linda Henderson

No where in the constitution are town or city officials given the power to ban the U.S. Military. These same people are the ones who would be quickest to scream and demand help from our military personnel when they are beset by any type of disaster or major problem. If the Marines are banished from anywhere in Calf, the entire state should be exempted from receiving any National Guard, regular military or financial assistance regardless of their situation.
If our military was not fighting terrorist in Iraq, they would be fighting them in this country. The people of Berkely should thank God everyday for these brave men and women who fight to keep this country SAFE AND FREE even for foolish population of Berkely.

GOD BLESS AMERICA AND HER WONDERFUL MILITARY PERSONNEL AND FAMILIES

I served proudly in the United States Marine Corps for 15 years. The Mayor and the citizens of Berkeley that allow this to happen are underserving of the protection of our military.

The Mayor obviously was not one that was spit upon by the courageous citizens of Berkeley during the Vietnam War.

How sweet the Mayor wants to “help” the Marines Retreat. News Flash Mr. Mayor. Marines run to the sound of battle not away from the sound of battle.

The City of Berkeley is also undeserving of our tax dollars. If they wish to continue with this disgusting conduct let the citizens of Berkeley use their own money, not that of loyal Americans.

Comment by Charlotte Walden

I am upset, but not surprised, with the actions taken by the “city government” of Berkeley. It seems that the “adults” who were so quick in handing down decisions that favor one side of a view point over another, have not bothered to remember that they represent all of the people. Shouldn’t our country’s young men and women be allowed to enquire into a career choice, military or ortherwise, without harassement? Must they hold the same ideas and convictions as this very “vocal” protesting group to deserve respect and tolerance? I have listened to accusations that the marines dispense false information, that the youth are not old enough to really understand what they are doing, etc. If Berkeley is trying to say they protest the war in Iraq, they need to find an appropriate way to do it. In my opionion, they are the ones acting foolish and deserve to have their “federal” funds withheld.

Comment by Gina in San Francisco

Please hold back the Federal funding! But know that after doing so Berkeley will cry out that their rights of free expression have been violated. Ironic, isn’t it? Sadly, the Republic of Berkeley is not only a badge of shame for America; it is the poster child of self-absorbed hypocrisy. When the SF Bay had a huge oil spill late last year, who were the first to publicly accuse the Coast Guard first of potentially being culpable and then of not responding quickly enough to suit them? You guessed it!

On a personal note, I went to Berkeley for graduate school years ago and received an excellent education. Since Berkeley (and UCBerkeley) passed around brown flags and disallowed American flags in post-9/11 demonstrations because they “didn’t want to offend anyone”, I have diverted my annual charitable donations that were earmarked for UCBerkeley to veterans’ associations. When I have to go to Berkeley for business, I bring my coffee and my lunch. I encourage other graduates to do the same.

Please let the Marines know we are behind them and admire them!

Comment by Lynne

Boo to Berkeley! They SHOULD have their federal funding removed. If they don’t support the rules and principles that govern this nation, why should they be allowed to enjoy the benefits? Without our soldiers guaranteeing their freedom, they wouldn’t be free to speak such nonsense!

My husband is in the Army. He has been to the “great sandbox” four times over a period of 17 years, for a total of three years of our marriage. He will probably return at least once more in the next 3 years. And he will go without a second thought — he loves our country, loves the military, and I can’t imagine him doing anything else. If there had not been a recruiting station in his home town way back when, he probably would have driven to the next town over to enlist. He used his GI Bill to go to college, then grad school, and is now an officer.

The Berkeley people fail to consider, among so many things, the wonderful opportunities that the military affords a soldier. My husband has an excellent education and experience that will serve him well beyond retirement from service, we have lived overseas, and my children have gained a well-rounded exposure to other cultures that only benefits them. WE have excellent, full-coverage medical insurance, and isn’t THAT so important this election year? There are so many other benefits, and not enough time or space to include them here.

Over the holidays, our commander asked one of his soldiers why he wasn’t going home for Christmas. The answer was sobering. He said that at home, his mother would be on drugs all the time. At least by staying on base, he was guaranteed safety from beatings, a roof over his head, and food to eat. If Berkeley prevents men and women like this from enlisting, do they have a plan to rescue them?

Comment by Darlene Morris

Senator Jim DeMint is my hero! Actions have consequences. It’s about time that Berkeley paid some for their actions and 2.1 million in Federal funding sounds about right.

I am absolutely appalled at the actions of Berkeley’s City Council. What right do they have to dispose of the marine recruiting office? These anti-military/ anti-american sentiments are heard in countries throughout the world but should never be echoed through the voices of our own citizens. Hats off to Senator Demint for taking a stand against this insanity and hitting them with a swift kick to their economy. Jamie, it sounds like Ms. Lee wants her cake & eat it too! She did not like the idea of the federal government withholding funds from Berkley. Which I think they should. They want all the benefits & protection our government has to offer without showing any support for our government. Not to mention that they are DENYING the rights of any one that wants to join the military. I also found her comments VERY OFFENSIVE that the rest of the country is either ignorant of the facts or too stupid to understand the facts of the war and its cost.
Thank you for keeping us informed.

My son is a Marine, and received a purple heart while serving in Iraq. This caused a lot of pain for my family, but we understood that he was fighting against horrible people. Our young warriors and military families know the dangers of fighting the terrorists. Code Pink and Berkeley are politically attacking our Marines. They are horrible people. The government must take their funding and we must all curse them for cowards. Thanks for reporting their hate for our military families!

Comment by The Scott Family

Regarding the Berkeley Protests: The Council & residents there obviously have forgotten the fact that there are Terrorists who want Americans dead. The very issues they are protesting against are the freedoms that protects them. The wonderful men and women in the Military fight each day for their freedoms for which they are fighting against. These are freedoms of all Amercans & their safety & security.

If they don’t like what America stands for, and the fact that America is the greatest country in the World — perhaps they should seek another country to reside. All that America stands for is the very reasoning that millions from other countries have sought to make the USA their home. The wolrd knows America has always been known as the Land of Opportunity, and the way to a better life. This begs the question: “Iif their city was attacked and thousands were killed, and there was no Military to protect them, would they just surrender to the terrorists, try to talk to them, or would they be prepared to fight for their lives and their families?”

Their actions are illogical, unreasonable and takes away the rights of the great Amercans who want to be recruited and voluntarily sign up to SERVE THEIR COUNTRY IN THE MILITARY! Aren’t they taking away their rights?

Keep up the great news reporting! That’s why FOX NEWS is the most honest, straight forward informational channel in the world.

I believe in free speech and the rule of law. The Berkeley City Council supports free speech but not the rule of law. The Marines have the legal right to recruit in Berkeley or any other city in America.

All Federal funds should be withdrawn from Berkeley and the City Council should be subject to any applicable fines from the feds.

Someone should tell these traitors be have our brave men and women fighting a war which obviously they care nothing about. If anything they want the defeat of America sooner rather than later for political purposes.

Stand up for America people.

My son is a Marine and about to be deployed in March to Iraq. He loves this country and is voluntarily willing to fight for our ‘freedoms’ (of which this group in Berkeley is taking advantage). I take great offense at their disparaging the Marines and doing what they can to boot them out of Berkeley. They have a right to protest but the Marines have the equal right to be there recruiting. I say block their funding indefinitely. My appreciation goes out to Senator DeMint for taking on this issue.
Why don’t the Berkeley protesters use their energy and self-righteousness to stand up for the rights of women in the Middle East?!
I do not live far from Berkeley. I will never again spend my money or time in that city.
Thank you, Jamie, for staying on top of this subject.

I think these are a few fanatics that are not thinking about what the outcomes of their actions are. They are very immature in thinking that they can force out the military recruiters and still expect to have the government to support their community. These “code pink” people and similar “organizations” forget that the military are the ones that fight for their right to have freedom of speech. They should voice their concerns to the politicians not protest against the military. Men and women that join want to serve the country and protect the rights of people and should not be deprived the right in seeking a place to join within their community.

These fanatic organizations would be the first to complain if some natural disaster or terrorist type organization struck against them and no support was shown to them from the government or military. I am for the removal of ALL government funding from this town if they continue with this course of action. The military needs to stand strong and stay in the community.

Comment by Charl;es Nyce

It is my thought process that there are many people in these United Sates that wish to exercise their rights without any responsibility for their actions. Fundamentals of government and successful society require that with every right presumed there is an associated responsibility. Those people who not willing to assume responsibility for the defense and stability of our nation have very immature thought processes. They fail to accept any mature adult thinking for their ability to protest and object and condemn any entity that preserves their ability to act in such a manner. It is apparent that they have failed to achieve anything significant in their lives and the natural tendency is to attack or attempt to diminish anyone or anything that has substance and responsibility for their actions. Sadly all media thinks it is important to give credence to such irresponsible voices. While they have the right to voice opposition, they hardly deserve recognition for their short-sighted visions.

I was in high school in the 60’s and realize that life is not a nonstop party of opposition and protest. It is my hope that the newest generation will not make the same mistakes we did in the 60’s. We are counting on the young folks to pick up the mantle of freedom and liberty to avoid the never-ending turmoil that resolved nothing over the last 40 plus years. You may want to review the Rise and Fall of the Roman empire and every other nation or society that has failed. They all dissolve from within when every claim of right is not associated with any responsibility for the actions of each individual in the society. If you do not learn from the past, humans will repeat it with the same destructive consequences.

I would advise all folks, lefties and righties alike to evaluate their thinking, grow up, mature and do some serious homework about nations, societies, responsibilities and mature thinking processes that are not associated with the I or ME syndrome.

God bless America and everyone in our borders that has taking the time to mature and be a participating citizen and not just a parasite.

I think the funds should be removed from the bill for berkeley and never again offered to any city that does not support the military. It is totally irresponsible of the city council to decide that the marines are not welcome. Berkeley is a embarassement not only to California but to this entire country.

Comment by Dewitt Nerhkorn

I. very strongly, oppose removing the Marine recruiting office out of Berkeley!!!! If the City Fathers oppose the war in Iraq, so be it. They can have an opinion, however, why try to force everyone else to agree with them. At this time we have a volunteer military so those that want to join to protect our nation against the enemy should have the right to do just that. If we take a back seat to all of this, we will be fighting this enemy on home ground. And, I feel, even the proponents of this move do not want this to happen.

And, I strongly, agree all federal funding should be stopped immedaitely should this move continue. It would also be interesting to hear comments from our front running presidental candidates on this issue.

For those of us who leave in the Bay Area this is “bezerkley” as usual. Forget about contacting California representives as they very much support these activties although it will be denied. Where are the”flag waving” presidential candidates especially John McCain who’s son is a Marine. Why can a city governement sanction, endorse and use tax payers dollars to harrass citizens? The ALCU should response to this but the ACLU is Code Pink.

For those who live outside the bay area let me explain. Bezerkely is ground zero for the terminally and tragically “hip” haphazard person masquerading as intellectuals. They live for these theatrical moments to appear in the newpapers as they believe they are absolutely right and far smarter than anyone else in the world. More so, they believe they know what’s best for your life!
Make no mistake, these people are not misguided, they are extreme liberals on the cutting edge of a new world order. They are classic examples of what Michael Savage saya “liberalism is a mental disorder.” There’s little sense trying to debate or discuss issues with them as your voice won’t penetrate over the glaze in their eyes which extends and covers their entire brain. Some people may want to smack the hell out of them but they would love a little S & M.

It’s important to correct this blatant disregard for government sanctioned harrassment so keep on complaining and reacting. Forget about asking for respect for the miliarty. Besides, Bezerkely is a dirty place. Maybe the Marines should move out but they are probably having fun just watching the “weirdos.”

When I first saw this report this morning, it disturbed me very much. It is everyone right as an American to publicly state their stance on any topic of which a majority or minority of American’s feel should be discussed in a public forum. However, the organizations involved in this story have crossed a line. Mainly in my eyes they are guilty of sedition, or “an illegal action inciting resistance to lawful authority and tending to cause the disruption or overthrow of the government ” also defined as “Acts that incite rebellion or civil disorder against an established government” (WordNet® 3.0, © 2006 by Princeton University.American Heritage New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy, Third Edition). This offence is punishable by law according to the Smith Act of 1940. These elected officials whom are voting against the Marines are violating the legal rights of the US Government to occupy a commercial space, using their position of elected power abuse constitutional right of Marines to exist and protect. Their use of federal funds should be suspended since they are not representing all of views of the American’s who’s tax dollars are paying for a portion of their budget. These individuals should be step down for violating their oath to up hold the constitution.

We as Americans should be ashamed at the direction our country is headed. These same people who would demand that the Marines leave town are the same people who want GOD out of our lives. They are also the same peole who enjoy the freedoms of this great country I know they have heard it a million times but just maybe they should consider another country for their home. I will be writting to my Senator to make sure he joins Sen. Jim DeMint in his efforts to stop Berkeley from receiving any monies from the Federal Gov. God Bless all our service men and woman who everyday put their lives on the line so that I may enjoy all the freedoms this great nation offers.

Comment by Alex Lovell

This is just downright unpatriotic. The recruiter have as much right to be their as anyone else. This is the kind of thing that discourages our troops in Iraq. And as far as I’m concerned, thats exactly what they want. The mayor is in no position to make the recruiters leave. Thing is, you attack our military; you attack our country. I just want those at Berkley to know that those that remain patriotic will not take this go lying down.

Comment by Mike in NY

I think it is appalling that the Mayor is supporting the demonstrators in trying to oust the Marines.

While I support the right to peacifully demonstrate, I very much support the right of choice. Any American who wants to serve this great country should be able to enlist in a local recruitment center without interference from Government Officials, a.k.a. the Mayor.

Furthermore, let’s not forget that the men and women of the military are protecting our right to these freedoms, such as to demonstrate.

Finally, freedom of choice does not mean there will not be consequences for your actions. I support taking away the federal funding. Now let’s see what the Mayor thinks.

Comment by John & Gloria Blakney

As a tax payer i think that not only 2 million be with held from Berkley,Calif. but
all federal funds should be stopped. If they (people of Berkley) don’t support our

I am a registered Democrat who is outraged by the arrogance of the Berkely City Council. The Marines protect the free speech rights of all Americans. Why must the far left try to stifle the free speech of those they disagree with. I encourage all Americans to contact their representatives in Congress to vote to withhold all Federal funds given to the City of Berkely until they recognize the rights of free speech of people with positions contrary to theirs.

I’m a Californian and I love the Golden Gate Bridge. I’m so sorry that it has to be surrounded on the whole by such an odious populace. When did the infection begin? Must have been in the 60s. Why weren’t we watching? Did we think that the infection would go away? Did we think that we were being smart by putting up with and even appreciating their novelty? I’m so ashamed. To turn out our Navy? Now the Marines? The only thing to do is to cut the federal funding to Berkeley. This is more important to me than any election.

Comment by Mary Beth

The Marines, and others in the Armed Forces, fight and die so bravely for each and every one of us, to insure that our freedoms, which we hold so dear, are protected. If a faction of our society share common beliefs and values and are the majority in a political subdivision, community. etc., should they not have the right to express that belief and lobby others to to enact their belief? Now if they engage in unlawful acts to enforce their will on others thats another thing altogether. Its called freedom folks! I know its hard to recognize freedom now days in our political correct world. FOX NEWS, what are you afraid of? Your putting huge amounts of effort into extinguishing this little bit of “dissent” out of step with your marching millions. “If these people have no freedom to express themselves then none of us do”.

Comment by Dylan Love

Hello Jamie,
My name is Dylan Love and I’m a 16 year old with an 18 year old brother as a United States Marine, whom I could not be more proud. So, it is absolutely despicable that there is actually enough people in Berkeley, let alone America, that share this soldier-bashing mentality. To be completely honest, it requires a lesser intelligence and an even greater shortage of morales and values to even contemplate this ridiculous idea of kicking the Marines out of Berkeley.

I hope that in some way, the people of Berkeley can hear this:

If your city, and your city alone, was being bombed or attacked by these terrorists, who would you expect to help you? Code Pink?
I think not.
No, the Marines would be the first on the scene, as they always are, to help.
And that is the crucial point that they’re missing.
To have the audacity to even say that the soldiers enlisted in the military, only joined because they were fed false information by the recruiters, is absolutely appalling!
DO NOT EVER question the intelligence of our soldiers merely because you’re not brave enough to see why soldiers join the military.
Whether you support the war or not, the troops, you should always support.

With all of that being said, i suppose what I’m saying is

“Berkely, and this coming from a 16 year old…. grow up.”

Comment by deanna Doering

I have lived in Berkeley since 1975 and have always cringed at the laughable city government. I wish I could withhold my property taxes from these idiots and I hope the federal government can put the squeeze on them. Should a major earthquake hit here I can see Washington replying with Berkeley? Where’s Berkeley? And I wouldn’t blame the Marines for not coming to help!

Fox News should send a reporter out and find out what a nut ruled city government we have from the mayor right on down. Does anyone remember how he stole hundreds of newspapers from the newsstands that weren’t favorable to him?????

Comment by CPT MM Mackay

Sending the entire community of Berkley to Afghanistan would be nice, I am certain they would be much happier there.

Comment by Matt

This story is truely disturbing to me. First off, you can’t join the military unless your an adult, or 17 with parents permission. This comunity is publicly stating that at 18 you’re not responsible enough to make an adult desicion. You can help reshape the future of this country by voting but you can’t serve it? If this community wants to make a political statement write somthing in the local paper, have a peacefull rally, but don’t hinder a young adults desicion on joining the military. One of the most selfless acts a young adult can do is to chose to serve their country for 2 to 4 years. We should encourage these selfless acts of serving, not send a message to the future leaders of america that at 18 they’re not responsible enough to make an adult desicion.

This comment is in response to a conversation on Fox (which aired at approximately 11:20 ET) between the anchor and a woman who was representing, as I understood it, the Berkeley position. She explained that one reason she opposes the Marines recruiting office is that they have made false statements to recruits. This is worthy of further investigation in my view. It is very important that the military represent the deal they are offering to these young men and women accurately. It is not true, as the anchor suggested, that they know exactly what they are getting into. I assume there are some enticing, and varying, perks offered to those who join the military. Also, there are varying levels of obligation. I recently visited my former law professor who is now a visiting professor at West Point. As we walked around campus I noticed that many of the cadets were driving shiny new, expensive cars. The professor explained that after two years at West Point you can make a choice: either drop out and pay for your education to date (in excess of $100,000, I was told) or take a similarly large bonus and finish with the program – and of course fulfill your post-graduate duty. My point is that deals are made – deals with rewards and sacrifices on both sides – and while I’m not familiar with the Marines’ recruitment practices, I assume the terms can be somewhat complicated. These terms should be represented accurately, as the guest suggested.

Comment by Greg in Missouri

I think Berkley should lose all their funding, let them join Mexico or Russia.
They should do this voluntarily, they don’t want to be a part of this GREAT COUNTRY, they should not want any money from the Govt.
On one hand I say let the marines leave, and the govt. leave Berkley too, But, on the other hand I say leave the Marines in Berkley and make Berkley suffer, by having a moral institution in their sights 24/7.
Code pink says it is because the recruiters lie when they are talking to kids, but what about the big lie that is code pink.
Ok, I say let them stay.

Comment by Richard H.

I just saw the segment on Berkley on Fox. Now I support what our troops are trying to do in the war effort, but I believe the segment that just aired against Berkley and this so called pink organization was poorly handled. I have never been to Berkley. From what I could hear while your commentator was talking over the former Berkley official made Fox look Rude and the Berkley official sound reasonable. It is commonly known that military recruiters are not always truthful when recruiting. (50 year old conservative male from NC.) POOR JOB FOX.

The liberal “intelligentsia” has appallingly used the Marine Corps recruiting station in Berkeley to advance their agendas on the global war on terror and homosexuality in the military. What these people do not understand is that regardless if you were for, or against it, we have committed to the cause and if we do not stay the course and leave the region prior to the erection of the Iragi Security Architecture, our enemy we’ll see this as weakness and in time regroup, plan, and export islamofascism and hate in the form of death and destruction all over the globe.

I heeded the call and enlisted in the Marine Corps infantry after attending Brown University. I was well aware of the circumstances going into the fight, and do not regret my 2 tours to Fallujah. However, I have seen first hand the people we are fighting…and if the slobs from Berkeley knew what I know they would be nothing but supportive of our troops, and thankful that they can sit in Berkeley and play “commander in chief” in pink.

Kudos to Sen. Demint for drafting legislation to deal with this attack on our troops.
