RANSOM
This picture comes from the dangerous and lawless border town of Sasabi. Human smugglers mark the path to the United States with this bottle and others like it. The paths are getting narrow and more crowded as we crack down in the border states. We have covered stories in recent months about increased violence now aimed at our border patrol and even local police forces inside the United States. Now what many have warned, more violence aimed at Americans, the percentages are growing and most of the victims have family, friends or businesses south of the border. When we spoke with Mexico’s Attorney General, both times he agreed that they have a battle in their northern states and for that matter across Mexico, against drug cartels and human smugglers. After the link…an AP write up.
Organized, well-financed and violent Mexican kidnapping cells are targeting a growing number of U.S. citizens visiting communities popular with San Diegans and other California residents.
Last year, at least 26 San Diego County residents were kidnapped and held for ransom in Tijuana, Rosarito Beach or Ensenada, local FBI agents overseeing the cases said yesterday. In 2006, at least 11 county residents had been kidnapped in the three communities.
“Some of the 26 were recovered, some were hurt and some were killed,” said agent Alex Horan, who directs the FBI’s violent-crime squad in San Diego.
“It’s not a pleasant experience. Victims have reported beatings, torture and there have been rapes. . . . Handcuffs and hoods over the head are common,” he said.
When contrasted to the 40 million border crossings made every year at the San Ysidro Port of Entry, the kidnapping numbers are small. Most of the victims have business interests or family members in Mexico.
But authorities said anyone planning to visit Mexico should be cautious.
“I would certainly be concerned,” Horan said.
The U.S. Consulate in Tijuana issued a travel advisory last week that said U.S. citizens living and traveling in Mexico should be extra vigilant.
Gunfights and other violence linked to drug cartels have increased in Baja California, and more Mexican citizens have been kidnapped lately.
While some of the groups suspected of kidnapping Americans are connected to drug trafficking, most aren’t, Horan said.
He described the kidnapping groups as sophisticated operations similar to terrorist cells, each with a boss and clear divisions of labor. Usually, one group is involved in scouting, another carries out the kidnapping, a third holds the victim and a fourth handles the ransom.
“They know who they’re going after. I think they have a list,” Horan said. “These are kidnapping cells. . . . That’s what they do. They do kidnappings all year long.”
While the FBI wouldn’t say what the ransom demands are, or how often they’re paid, agents said money is driving the increase.
“This is not about terrorizing people or retaliating. This is about making money, and obviously this is good business for them,” Horan said.
The scenario that fits about 90 percent of the FBI’s kidnapping cases starts with a middle-class family with no criminal ties, who live in communities such as Chula Vista, San Diego and National City.
The family typically owns a business in Mexico and has relatives there. At least one family member, usually a man in his 40s, makes several personal and professional trips across the border.
While driving in Mexico, this person is pulled over by as many as 10 people posing as police.
They’re carrying weapons, wearing vests and using police jargon. Within a minute or two, someone is shoving a hood over the victim’s head and dragging him into a vehicle. His car is left on the side of the road.
“We’ve had victims held for days to months,” Horan said.
Not every victim is Hispanic, but there have been “very few cases where a tourist is targeted at random,” said Eric Drickersen, who supervises the FBI’s border liaison office in San Diego.
Some of the kidnappings go unreported because people fear retribution, Drickersen said.
Ransom demands are almost always made over the phone. The cross-border communication gives the FBI its jurisdiction. But the agents need authorization from Mexican authorities before they can carry out an operation across the border.
Mexican authorities have been helpful, their U.S. counterparts said.
“They’re cooperating, but we would like them to do even more,” Drickersen said.
A week ago, Mexican authorities rescued two female real estate agents who were being held in a Tijuana neighborhood. The women were kidnapped Jan. 19 by three men after showing a property in southern Tijuana, the Baja California Attorney General’s Office said in a statement.
The men called in a ransom demand of $350,000, the statement said. Family members negotiated a payment of $27,000 and dropped off the cash, but the women weren’t released.
Baja California state agents tracked down the vehicle used to pick up the cash. The driver led authorities to the women, and three men were arrested.
Both women are Mexican citizens, although one is married to a U.S. resident. She and her husband live in Chula Vista.

I think all Americans, especially college students taking vacations during their spring breaks, or other school breaks, should be warned about the dangers of going to Mexico. I have heard about kidnappings for ransom, and the torturing of our american citizens. First, Students should be educated about the dangers of traveling to Mexico at their Universities before students take their breaks for safety reasons. I can’t believe how some students can be so trusting. Next, warn americans about the dangers threw the news media often, since people seem to forget. Keeping American Citizens ALERT.

A Story:
One sunny day early in 2009, an old man approached the White House from across Pennsylvania Avenue, where he’d been sitting on a park bench.
He spoke to the Marine standing guard and said, “I would like to go in and meet with President Hillary Clinton.” The Marine replied, “Sir, Mrs. Clinton is not the President, and doesn’t reside here.” The old man said, “Okay,”and walked away.
The following day, the same man approached the White House, and said to the same Marine, “I would like to go in and meet with President Hillary Clinton.” The Marine again told the man, “Sir, as I said yesterday, Mrs. Clinton is not the President, and doesn’t reside here.”
The man thanked him, and again walked away. The third day, the same man approached the White House, and spoke to the very same Marine, saying “I would like to go in and meet with President Hillary Clinton.” The Marine, understandably agitated at this point, looked at the m an and said, “Sir, this is the third day in a row you have been here asking to speak to Mrs. Clinton. I’ve told you already several times that Mrs. Clinton is not the President, and doesn’t reside here. Don ‘t you understand?”
The old man answered, “Oh, I understand you just fine; I just love hearing your answer!”
The Marine snapped to attention, saluted, and said, “I’ll see you tomorrow.
Where is everyone today? -Rod-
I found k2’s link
Anyone see k2 around? I need to find a link that she posted about the economy over the past decades.
Have we posted this link before?
http://illegal.globalincidentmap.com/home.php
Wow
KT *shakes head*
I know… I don’t get it. I can only go to Sunrise b/c of the cardiology … so that place is … is…. very… well, I wish I could go to Summerlin … but I see Spring Valley is now doing open hearts.. I need to see if I can go there.
Terri, I agree with everything you have said. I wish I didn’t have to work so I could homeschool Christina. I too have experienced the same issues in the emergency rooms here, both at Sunrise and St Rose. I wasn’t aware of the jobs lost in the construction industry, that’s sad, we have so much construction here! Do you know what would have happened to one of us if we were caught driving drunk and without insurance???
I feel like thay have literally taken over our social system and our rights. What gets me though is that its permitted to continue.
KT… that’s from me and my personal experience.
Now this is interesting. Some guy (see the link) says we all need to just grow up and vote for McCain and that the punishment for not doing so is socialized medicine.
meatandpotatoesblog.townhall.com/Default.aspx?mode=post&g=1f84fc6e-ca1a-4cb3-8e10-4c11e3dbdb85
He should maybe think before he speaks. Given that the US economy takes about a 300 Billion dollar hit annually due to illegals, he really wants to trade one for the other? Vote Hillary and we get SM, vote McCain and we likely get the illegals instead.
$90 Billion Dollars a year is spent on illegal aliens for Welfare & social services by the American taxpayers. http://premium.cnn.com/TRANSCIPTS/0610/29/ldt.01.html
Suppose we got rid of the illegals. Might that monetary relief maybe make healthcare more affordable for lower income families?
McCain needs to grow a spine, and the American people shouldn’t have to choose between the frying pan and the fire. -Rod-

Terri, is that your statement or did you get that from someplace else?
Re: illegals..
I love my entire extended family… but I can’t afford to have them all come live with me.
I feel the boat is full…
We have enough of our own system abusers… and we certainly don’t need to pay for people here illegally.
I have become very jaded since having my baby ~ I’m not saying it’s right… but it’s how I feel.
For six months in the hospitals…..I watched the babies of illegals have access to full medical benefits, when MY baby did not qualify when we were told we were out of insurance. That makes me so mad!
90% of our traffic violaters in traffic court are illegal aliens that drive without car insurance ~ it costs us more now in uninsured motorist on my my insurance. My husband was rear ended by a drunk illegal that did not have insurance and never even had to go go court… that is just wrong? No American citizen could have EVER gotten away w/o going to court after driving drunk and no car insurance.
I have had to sit HOURS (average of 10 hours) in the ER along with dozens of non English speaking people that use the ER as a primary doctor… and we pay for that and it affects care.
Americans are losing construction jobs here in LV due to illegals.
I am very much against illegal aliens draining our social benefits.
I will be homeschooling my son b/c our schools have been soooo dumbed down b/c of non English speaking kids that are here illegally. The LV school systems are in dire straits… I believe we were 47th or 49th in the nation.
I was reading the cop’s site- The NYPD police get paid initially $25,000 grand a year to start- they are on the streets about ready to get killed, and they are now being sued for supposedly discriminating-
Hell- they might as well go sit home and make just as much- with unemployment- food stamps- health insurance– and be safe!
Whatever Rod–
the USA is in the big hole now– their space program they have going now is because of China because China is doing great things with outer space- North Korea is a big issue too-
Look at the map- the USA is not very large in comparison to the other countries- As the one Senator said– USA may lose its sovereignty- why- because we are losing face–
This government (federalism) here better get its chara together- And this is not a illegal issue-
It has to do with the USA trying to be too friendly- we are not even a democratic country– we are based on Federalism-
And I don’t think just the illegals exploit the system– I think the people who defraud the gov’t seeking for handouts for disability checks and unemployment, aka, US citizens are fraudelent themselves.
I am still paying my student loans off- I have a degree- I pay my taxes- I have never had a handout- I get less for taking care of Ken than when I worked at the hospital- much, much less.
It is not just about illegals– it is about everyone who cheats the system- those lazy ones who sit on their arse and expect to have it given to them– and these come in all colors and shapes!
xxxxx
I will still jump off the boat– I can swim!
The National Policy Institute “estimated that the total cost of mass deportation would be between $206 and $230 billion or an average cost of between $41 and $46 billion annually over a five year period.”

None of that solves the problem, Susan. I have empathy too. But I won’t sacrifice 5 to save one that can’t be saved. I won’t sacrifice 288 million to save 12 million either. Those 12 million are dragging the rest of us down. We’re drowning. -Rod-

Rod–
give me a break– I am just saying I feel sorry for them- It doesn’t mean I support their presence breaking the law- I am just saying, I have empathy– and if you were in their miserable towns because their frigging government does not take care of them, they resort to desperate measures and illiteracy in these town ranks way high!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So they cross that frigging hot desert with their very few belongings, barely even know how to spell their name, and try to get over here— and OUR GOVERNMENT HAS ALLOWED THIS TO GO ON- AND THEY DID NOTHING- AND THEIR GOVERNMENT HAS DONE NOTHING- SO WHO IS AT FAULT- NOT THE KID WHO GETS HIS HAND IN THE COOKIE JAR AND WANTS MORE BECAUSE THIS IS HIS FIRST COOKIE!
I worked with the indigent who scammed big time when I worked at a non-profit clinic for John C. Lincoln– I was pissed off at them getting so greedy- trying to get more and more– It is like someone who wins the lotto who has never had any money and pisses it all away- They get here having nothing and want it all- I know– why- they never had it-
These are ignorant people who don’t know better- It is called Conspicuous consumption-Thorstein Veblen– He wrote about this in 1902— I highly recommend this book- I read it years ago-
—- a term used to describe the lavish spending on goods and services that are acquired mainly for the purpose of displaying income or wealth
As for this question-
problem: You have 5 people in a boat. A person in the water is yelling for help and tries to climb into your boat but there’s no room - a sixth person would swamp it and all would perish. What will you do? -Rod-
I would probably jump off- I know how to swim!
xxxxx
So you’re saying it’s ok for them to drag us all down?
A problem: You have 5 people in a boat. A person in the water is yelling for help and tries to climb into your boat but there’s no room - a sixth person would swamp it and all would perish. What will you do? -Rod-
Sorry Rod– I just know them too well and I have worked for them– and I just can’t have a bit of a heart– not saying this is right– but they are humans too– and I know they come from miserable surroundings– this just needs to get right– for all–
Hey– if you get bored- go to cop’s site and check out some of his articles– I can’t believe what the cops get paid in New York– his site is on the Democracy thread-

Ali used to wander in to bed an hour or so after I crashed until I started running her across the comforter. She loves it…gnaws on my hand thru the fabric, usually while I give Ginger attention with the other. About the only thing she likes better than the play is her belly rubs. That used to cause me some blood loss too until she realized I wasn’t going to pull her guts out. Cats!
-Rod-
Susan,
Feel for them and we’ll become them, and that’s a fact. A chain is only as strong as it’s weakest link…humanity invariably seeks out the lowest common denominator. The more we lower the standards of this country, the worse we become…I could go on.
They are Mexico’s responsibility but sadly the US’s problem. They will kill this country as surely as if we’d lost WWII. That’s not just hype. It’s an ugly truth. Feel sorry for us instead. -Rod-
go check out Shep’s mug shot on Greta’s baby thread-
— way too funny- If true, I hope Shep won-
Rod- I commented on your video in the Whatever Happened to Baby Democracy thread—

Where is everyone tonight?
I checked out your slideshow, Patty. You must have a huge birdfood bill! I’m down to the sock feeder, BTW. The wind took my stand over, in spite of it having a 40 pound concrete base (!) and busted the other feeder. I’m using up the remaining feed just tossing it on the ground under the thistle. The doves don’t mind. -Rod-
One final comment–
the sad thing about many of the illegals which come over from Mexico is that many or most of them have not completed even to a third grade education– so reading and writing is not part of their upbringing– and to have them here legally, we would have to teach them the basics of reading and writing– this is one of the reasons they haven’t learned the language– and this is not their fault– given their upbringing and the poverty they were raised in, education is not a priority– working out in the fields or somewhere is number one– so I can’t help but feel for them a bit–
And yet they hate us. We’re a warmongering, racist, human rights abusing, capitalistic, imperialist, drugged out, pornographic culture despised the world over.
And people knock each other out of the way to come here. Go figure. -Rod-
Jen S, you have to add Al Qaeda to that list please.
Rod-
I will buy stock in Band-Aid now.
Proportion of illegals from countries other than Mexico
Of course, not all illegal aliens come from Mexico. In 1997, the illegal alien population was 54 percent Mexican. The illegal alien population is currently 70 percent Mexican, with 30 percent coming from other countries. Latin America, including Mexico, is the source of 90 percent of illegal aliens entering into the United States. A 2004 Fox News article stated that “it is not just Mexicans who are flooding into our border states anymore. Along with the Nicaraguans, Brazilians, Venezuelans, Ecuadorians, and Chileans, agents of the Border Patrol now encounter Chinese, Pakistanis, and Indians. Nationals of countries other than Mexico are known, in Border Patrol parlance, as ‘OTMs’” - Other Than Mexicans.

I don’t think McCain can beat either Hillary or Obama. At best he only appeals to about half of conservatives. If he’s thinking that people will come out to vote for him just to make sure a Dem doesn’t get in, he’s underestimated the American conservative’s apathy. He’s going to have to harden his heart to have any shot at winning and that will just enrage the liberals and give them ammunition. I need to hit the lottery, buy me a county and form my own country. I WILL keep the illegals out…What a mess. -Rod-
http://michellemalkin.com/2008/02/07/video-mccain-at-cpac-not-quite-the-uniter-yet/
The average person use to be able to stand up to the Government if they wanted to come and get our guns but these days the average person does not last long against the Government even with assault rifles like we are still allowed to have here in Oklahoma, from what I understand assault rifles are already banned in California.
Oklahoma has the largest gun shows in the world BUT if McCain has his way that will all go away, that is one reason why Tom Delay refused to say he would vote for McCain when hard ball asked him.
McCain is not any better than the Democrats on my particular issues, well he is better than Hillary but everyone on the planet is better than her.
Any person that wants my guns is welcome to them. They need only come and take them from me. -Rod-
The NRA is not to happy with McCain they gave him a C grade just barely.
McCain wants to get rid of gun shows and he wants more anti-gun laws and he did not even vote on the stimulous package.
Tom Delay said he is not sure if he will vote for McCain because he does not know who will be more dangerous for the country the Democrats or McCain. Ouch !!!!
Huckabee is the man, if he would have had more money he probably could have won it and he is much more conservative than McCain.
From FOX: “McCain is clear leader for GOP nomination but is eager to mute criticism from the right for being too moderate”
One of the few moments of backlash, however, came when he discussed illegal immigration, a sign that his work to forge a comprehensive immigration plan with Democrats still is considered amnesty by many conservatives. McCain said he pursued that legislation knowing it would “imperil” his campaign, but that border security is among his highest priorities.
He was willling to saddle us with 12 million illegals in return for a ‘closed’ border that in all probablity never would have been actually closed. That’s not a good sign. Maybe he should worry less about muting the criticism and more about addressing the reason he’s getting it. -Rod-
I notice that McCain is seeking to mute the criticism that he’s too moderate. Maybe he should address the concern instead:
Yeah, Jen. It frosts me every time I have to do it when I refill my scripts. We REALLY need to make English the US’s official language. Those that don’t like it can leave.
I think those bumperstickers have been done already though. I’m looking for original material. Sorry. See what I mean about not being clear in my writing? It was obvious to ME what I meant

Why Should I Have to Press “1″ for English?
I actually called and complained to my bank about the last one—I need to call them again. grrr
You’re right, Patty. I can’t believe that we’ve come to the point where such an article should have been written. Sheesh. Your daughter should have added “Why don’t they speak English?”
Denver’s a liberal city…the only time I went there was to watch a concert or baseball/hockey. Otherwise, they are just an Eastern extension of Kalifornia. State law in Colorado says one can carry a gun anywhere besides a government building or a school. Denver’s thinks they’re special though, practically banning them. I don’t know how that fight is going since I’ve been gone from the state for 3 years. -Rod-
rod…i cant even count the number of jobs our daughter was turned down for in denver because on the applications the first question was “can you speak spanish”…she marked no, and wrote “why should i?”
I knew we did something right with those kids!!!

You MUST be kidding!
A Texas school district is reviewing its second-language requirement after concerns over students being forced to learn Spanish, according to reports.
Some parents at Timberline Elementary School in Grapevine, Texas, are outraged their children have to take Spanish as a mandatory second-language requirement, MyFOXDFW.com reported.
Leigh Allison, the mother of fifth-grader Ashleigh, said the policy makes life easier for Hispanic immigrants and her daughter shouldn’t be forced to conform, according to a report on Star-Telegram.com.
“She wants to be that one voice that forces them to learn English,” Leigh Allison told the paper. “We’re not going to turn America into a bilingual country to accommodate you.”
Texas requires second language instruction for elementary and middle-school students, Star-Telegram reports. Most schools choose Spanish instruction, but other languages are acceptable for the policy.
The Grapevine-Colleyville School District is reviewing its language policy after more than 15 years of Spanish instruction, and Ashleigh Allison is being allowed to study French in school without the aid of a teacher, MyFOXDFW.com reports.

Hey Rod,
dinner time here….will be back.
K2,
Glad you like the bumpersticker, BTW, but am looking for even more ideas from others. I’m just one warped mind - I need other equally warped views
-Rod-
The ACLU is fond of saying that the People have a right to know, at least when it comes to government. It seems though that they do not carry that same tune when it comes to illegals.
LAPD doesn’t want to crack down on illegals because they are afraid that if they do, illegals won’t want to talk to them when it comes to crime reporting. Doesn’t it occur to them that if the illegals were not barricaded in the inner city, that the crime rate would bottom out for that community? It’s a catch-22. The need the illegals to inform on the illegals committing crimes so won’t bust the illegals.
That’s government thinking for ya. -Rod-
The candidates need to grow some cojones. Hell, if someone can’t get elected without the ‘hispanic’ vote, maybe it’s too late for us already. In fairness I always point out that illegals are not just Mexicans or other south of the border types. In reality the Russians are far more corrupt and the Middle Easterners more dangerous. But we can’t pick and choose. This is about illegals, no matter what foreign country they call home. -Rod-
Rod,
noticed that as well, on Freedom Watch. But, looks like they are open to suggestions.
I like your bumper sticker.
And, although you skipped English - your posts are very good… So, keep ‘em coming.
Unfortunately, the illegal alien issue has been pushed to the back because all the candidates want the large Hispanic vote.
Additionally, whenever one speaks of illegals, the immediate conclusion is people from Latin America. But, seriously, we need to be concerned about any illegals entering our country.
Maybe if our bumper stickers have the photos of the 9/11 hijackers, people will get the message.
Their core missions:
CORE ISSUE AREAS: We will have four fundamental issue areas that are generational in breadth and scope.
* The dangers of radical Islam and the emerging Iranian threat
* Advancing a conservative agenda and market-based solutions to pressing domestic problems
* Standing up to Big Labor’s radical agenda
* Preventing the degeneration of our society by stopping the legalization of controlled substances.
There’s nothing there about illegals. But it may be covered in #2…ie, illegals are good for business if it keeps costs down, and that’s a tradeoff I’m not willing to make. -Rod-
If we keep it up Kar, we’ll be a silent minority soon enough.
Trouble is, my letter writing sucks. It’s no better than my blog posts, a bunch of disjointed thoughts with lousy sentence structure. That’s what I get for ditching English for 3 years running
We need more media focus on the issue of illegals and we have to make it a campaign issue. It’s no coincidence that the issue died before the election cycle started. We cannot let them get away with that.
How about we start with something simple like a bumper sticker. Let’s toss some ideas out there and see what we can come up with. To start:
No Illegals - No Compromise!
-Rod-
Just saw this profiled on Fox News.
It may be an organization that will help…..
http://www.freedomswatch.org/About/tabid/38/Default.aspx
Derek and Rod,
I think we middle Americans can begin to get our message across by writing to your newspaper. Write to the Editor. Ask if you can submit an opinion column.
If it gets posted - and most papers now have a web presence - email the link to all your friends.
Send letters to your local (State) and national (Congress) representatives. Let them know you will not accept amnesty. You will not accept a simple ‘path to citizenship’. You will not support employers who hire illegal aliens. And, explain, if they do not hear you, all efforts will be used to see that they are not elected to office again.
Continue to write to your paper’s editor……expose our elected representatives for not putting the security of our country ahead of all other issues / programs.
It is not the perfect solution, but it is a beginning.
We have been known as the silent majority - we just cannot continue along these lines. We must speak-up.
They landed perfectly, thank goodness
I mean, we could trick them, tell everybody that wal-mart is slashing everything by 75% and going out of business, have people with signs at every parking lot, and as the minivans flow in, slap them with a bumpersticker, give the kids a free balloon, and say in order to qualify for the discounts, you have to hold this sign and chant….
We would have the middle class motivated then.

Rod-
I am with you, but we need to motivate the large middle class, the silent majority, the working class. I am afraid that in order to motivate them we need to work into their schedule, it sucks, but it is true. Not everyone can see what is happening, half of the conservatives won’t even look. How can we get the middle awake, I am afraid of one solution, and that is to let them fall, because I will fall with them. We need something to motivate, and unfortunately, a just cause is not enough.
I am not happy with the way we are, and I want to change the mentality, but we need to approach it differently. We need to baby step the middle class into protesting and the sad fact is way may not have time to do it.
Test… I sure do wish my scanner link would work here. Shoot. Just paste it into your browser I guess:

This bears repeating in response to your last reply:
If we want to save what we have, we can’t make excuses for our inaction.
Saving your job, only lose your job to an illegal doesn’t make much sense.
Saving your job only to lose your country is even worse.
Are we REALLY that shortsighted? -Rod-
The answer to your question is….
No. Not all liberals are on the dole. They have to work too. The illegals are working and they take time off. The professors take the day off, teachers let your kids out of school so they can march. In LA the kids just up and leave class and they are not suspended for it. So here we have 15, 16 and 17 year olds with more of a voice than us old fogies. They are not even old enough to vote but the politicians hear THEM, not us.
If we want to save what we have, we can’t make excuses for our inaction.
Saving your job, only lose your job to an illegal doesn’t make much sense.
Saving your job only to lose your country is even worse. -Rod-
Rod-
I am willing to do alot, but I can understand how difficult it can be for americans, most conservatives are hard working and dedicated. It can be difficult to get time off to go protest, I for one am lucky that I am in a position to take off when I want, but too many times I see employers that will fire somebody for excessive absences. It is a reality, but most conservatives are too conservative to risk losing their primary source of income.
Sounds bad, but there is a lot of truth to it.
Derek,
So you’re willing to forfeit your country rather than take a day off? What’s it worth to you? -Rod-
Rod-
I am with you on the protesting though, I am even willing to cash in some vacation days to do it.
Hey Rod-
I think most conservatives are not in the streets protesting because we are all at work driving the economy and surviving.
