I’m disturbed but not surprised by the position the city of Bwrkley has taken concerning the Marine recruitment facility. Your city leadership as well as the residents who gave public comments concerning the facility show willful ignorance of the functions of our military, God bless them. My only son, at 23, is a combat veteran of Iraq, Nearly three years prior to his deployment to Al Anbar province he responded to Thailand to assist those devastated by the much reported Sunami. (You may have heard something about it, it was in the news.) A later catastrophy in Indonesia caused Marines to be mobilized to assist victims of a mudslide. At any given time, there many of our military, including Marines, engaged in humanitarian efforts worldwide. You, Mr. Mayor, as a former military man know that!

I was in Berkley once. It was 1976 and I had decidedly left of center political leanings. A short visit was enough to convince me that the drug induced, separate reality of you enlightened folks was not worth investigating further. Perhaps we as a nation need a place like Berkley to act as a reminder of how out of touch we can become when we lean on our own understanding. Your (Berkley’s) example of self-righteousness, closed-mindedness and libeless filth is really getting the spotlight focused on you, Mayor. May God have mercy on you. You would do well to rely on more reality based sources of information than code pink, Michael Moore, and CNN.

Let it be know there are many of us of who believe our Military are heroes. I am one of them. I am thankful to live in a country where I have liberty, and I can pursue happiness. I love America, the Flag, and the God who made it all possible. Thankfully, way before my time, men gave their lives for that freedom. Berkeley is the home of the modern day free speech movement, so it is especially galling that the City Council would attempt to steal the First Amendment rights of the Marines. I guess free speech is really only for Code Pink, the Communist anti-war group that the city gave a FREE parking spot and FREE noise permits.

I am a former Marine with a son on active duty - as a recruiter in Hartford, CT. I do not appreciate, nor find amusing, the antics of so-called adults who quite never grew up. So they want the Marines out. I want my tax dollars out of Berkeley (and Toledo, OH, whose mayor has also declared war on the Marines). They can have all the free speech they want, but those of us who disagree should not have to pay them.

Those who claim they support the troops and then pull a stunt like this give a lie to their words. They want their way and will brook no opposition. Isn’t that what Communism was all about?

Marines have a saying:”No better friend, no worse enemy”. I’d think twice about this “resolution”. How would they propose to enforce it? Interfering with military functions constitutes “taking up arms”. I’d like to be there for the Marine response.

I’m the mother of a Navy Corpsman who is serving with the Marines. I’m proud of my son’s service, his devotion to country and his fellow man. Obviously, Berekely fails to share the sentiment of the overwhelming vast majority who feel as I about our military. Please don’t write back and make lame declarations regarding support for the troops but not the mission; it doesn’t wash.

However when you sit down to enjoy one of your organic lunches and lament that senators in DC are now about to promote legislation which will make you actually PAY FOR YOUR OWN special goodies, you’ll remember that we live in a free country not because of a Constitution or Bill of Rights, but because of the blood my son and his fellow military peers have spilled to keep people like you fat and happy and able to spout stupidity to your hearts content.

I have lived next door to Berkeley in El Cerrito for over 30 years. The city has incrementally moved toward into the socialist mold of being anti Amnerica, anti Freedom and has demonstrated a total disregard for most values patriotic American hold dear. This is a break out event which puts on display the true picture of what all thing Berkeley Government believes. We, the undersigned condemn the Berkeley City Council’s treasonous attack on US Marine Recruiters stationed in their city. We ask that Congress cut off funds from any and all municipal entity within the confines of the city of Berkeley, California, until such time as the city council withdraws it’s action.

The City Council has voted to tell the Marines their downtown recruiting station is not welcome and “if recruiters choose to stay, they do so as uninvited and unwelcome guests.”

The measure passed last week by a vote of 8-1.

The council also voted to explore enforcing a city anti-discrimination law, focusing on the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.

In a separate item, the council voted, also 8-1, to give the Marxist protest group Code Pink a parking space in front of the recruiting office once a week for six months and a free sound permit for protesting once a week.

I have telephoned the Mayor’s office and left a message and sent the letter below twice to different email addresses for the Mayor, both times the emails were returned and I haven’t had a return phone call either. As I mention in the letter I will not go away. I will be there tomorrow to stand in the gap for our military who are willing to give it all for you and I. I would encourage everyone that can to come and stand with me as I confront the City Council and honor our troops!

Dear Mayor:

I was appalled at the decisions that your City Council made at your last meeting, telling the Marines they were not welcome in your city and then granting Code Pink a parking place in front of the Recruiting office free for six months along with a free noise permit. I called and left a message last week for you to call me, a Gold Star Mother whose son gave the ultimate sacrifice. It doesn’t surprise me that you didn’t return that phone call. Trust me I won’t just go away!

My son Marc Alan Lee laid down his life 8-2-06 for American’s to have all of the freedoms that we enjoy. He voluntarily went to his recruiter to find out what opportunities would be provided to him and what would be required for him to be a Navy SEAL. He was treated professionally and never once regretted his decision to become a Navy SEAL. He was honored to serve his country. He was stationed in California along with half of the SEAL community. I’m sure you’ve heard of the elite of the elite, as President Bush calls them. My oldest son Kristofer went to a Marine recruiters office in July 2000 and signed to be one of “The few, the Proud, The Marines.” He also never regreted his choice and was also treated professionally and was proud to serve his country for 5 years. My son-in-law Christopher also visited an Army recruiter and proudly served his country for 3 years. I wish that you served as a Mayor with the same pride and love for this country and those men and women who would defend you unconditionally! Our military defends your freedoms and has written a blank check to you and your city and every American and they have told you to fill in the cost of that freedom up to and including the cost of their lives and you are telling these people they are not welcome in your city? How dare you!

I’m sure you continue to enjoy those freedoms that every man or woman who has served in our military has fought for you. Who do you think would defend you if the terrorists attacked your city? Who do you think would come if an earthquake devastated your city? Who do you think would come if their were riots in your city? How dare you try to legislate and change the laws of the land. I find myself speechless as to the reasoning behind your actions surrounding your intended goal of shutting down the Marine recruitment center at Berkeley, but the word “incomprehensible” comes to mind. “Intolerance” and “Ungrateful” are two more and I have others, but for the sake of brevity, you get the picture.

You referred to the U.S. Marines as “uninvited and unwelcome intruders,” a term that you have come to back off from, but your intent is real. Your outrageous antics have forced me to make as many people as I can aware of what you, your city council and your town stand for, and I can promise you this fact, I will stand with everyone opposing your efforts and will make every attempt to not have any business done in Berkeley.

In my book, “Everything Worth Knowing I Heard On Talk Radio,” I devoted an entire chapter to the “Love of the Military.” It chronicles my awareness of who protects our precious freedoms here and the incredible men and women who give strangers living under totalitarian rule a taste for freedom.

I will be waiting for you to back down and issue a public apology to this nation, and in particular, the honorable and heroic men and women of the United States military.

I am a former resident of California, moved away with husband in Army. I have a son returning this week from a tour in Iraq and I am very proud of my son for honorably serving his country in another country and my husband for honorably serving his country stateside. As a native of California, I have been appalled by the people of Berkeley with their working to keep the Marines and /or Military out of their city. I would have believed with all of the violence and bloodshed in their community during the Viet Nam war they would have learned a lesson. Our soldiers that they protest against and rally against are what keep them having the freedom for their protesting by protecting this country. If this community does not want to support their military then I, as a tax payer, believe we should revoke all federal fundings from the community, college and other such entities that currently do and are thinking about turning their backs on our country in such a manner. I have said it before, am saying it now and will probably say it in the future. If you cannot believe in this country then we do not want you here. Leave, find a country you believe in and see if you can do such things in that country and get away with it. You are Un-American and should not live in America. I believe in this country and stand loyal to The United States of America. I stand beside and behind our soldiers, one and all. The loss of federal funds to the Marxist capitol of America is a good start. I think the mayor of code pink town should be forced to reseign before federal funds are returned. I think it is time for the surrounding county to install inbound road blocks to Berkeley. If there is a subversive entity amongst us -we must protect and inform. there may be a possible terrorist build up in that town and the town fears the revolutionaries will be found out.

Road blocks can be set up on county property outside of city property. Americans need to know who are entering this burg-friend of foe.

As a constituent and business owner, I most strongly urge you to support The Semper Fi Act of 2008.

Six US senators and an Orange County California representative are introducing companion bills called the Semper Fi Act of 2008 that takes away $2 million, including funds from UC Berkeley and a local foundation that provides lunches to the Berkeley Unified School District. Additionally, the bills seek to take away $243,000 from the Chez Panisse Foundation, which provides school lunches for Berkeley public schools, and $975,000 from UC Berkeley’s Matsui Center for Politics and Public Service to create an endowment and catalogue of papers of Rep. Robert Matsui. The bills would also seek to remove other earmarks, including nearly $1 million for a new ferry service and funds for public safety.

These actions serve as appropriate notice and response/retaliation to the uproar over an anti-Marine Corps policy by the Berkeley, California City Council vote telling the U.S. Marines their recruiting station is not welcome in the city.

Thank you for your kind attention to this urgent matter. I’m strongly advocating for your aggressive support.

I hope that you will change your position. It is our Military who ever since the founding of our country that gives us all the right to have different political viewpoints about our governments and everything else that affects our lives here in America. Like many Americans and people around the world we all hope for the day that humans will not go to war anymore. However this war on Terror is very different.
My daughter served in the Army and my son n law is not back in Iraq on his second deployment while he leaves my daughter and two grand babies back home. They are in Iraq working with the Iraqi Army and Iraqi Police to root out the killers who think nothing of blowing themselves up and taking with them innocent men, women and children.
I have been to Iraq three times now interviewing our military, civilians and Iraqis.
The Freedom of Speech and Expression protects you and all of us including our Marines who are giving those who are interested in serving their country an opportunity to join from right in the communities.

I am appalled at the City Council of Berkeley.

I just visited their web page trying to find out what they are all about. It seems they talk a good story. One example is their Public Commons for Everyone Initiative.

This is quoted from their official web page

“The Public Commons for Everyone Initiative (PCEI) seeks to improve our City’s common areas for everyone who lives in, works in, and visits Berkeley. Our parks, libraries, schools, cultural venues, and commercial districts are important gathering places for everyone, and the City wants to ensure that everyone feels welcome and safe.”

I don’t see anything in that statement of purpose of the PCEI that excludes United States Marines. I don’t see anything that tries to exclude anyone from Berkeley. They give lip service (via their web page) to welcoming everyone!

Perhaps the fine city council of Berkeley needs to take a review class on the Constitution of the United States of America.

Mr. Mayor - So, the Marines are “unwelcome intruders” in Berkeley. I suppose in the near future will include ALL branches of military service recruiters.

As a 30 year retiree from the U. S. Navy, I was and am disgusted by the actions of the Berkeley Mayor and City Council. I had trouble with their “type” when I returned from Vietnam in 1970, and they continue with their looney ways. Following is a copy of the e-mail I sent the Mayor and the City Council when I learned of their perfidy in the case of the U. S. Marine Corps.
“I am deeply saddened that the City of Berkeley, home of the Free Speech Movement and defender of diversity, has decided that it has no room in its midst for the United States Marine Corps. How sad that you have become what you abhor — a tyrannical, fascist government allowing in your boundaries only those who fit your profile of “good” people. I guess Berkeley is not so “diverse” after all. Perverse might better describe that city and its denizens.”
One further note: The Marines must be doing good business in Berkeley, otherwise they would probably shut down the Recruiting Station themselves. There are obviously some patriotic men and women who live in the Berkeley Area who want to help defend their country and their fellow citizens. They should have the chance to do so.

To the Mayor and City Council,
My father, my son and I have defended our country on the battlefield and we are proud of our service. We fought without reservation so that all citizens of the United States could have the freedom to express themselves as you all have.

However, it is my feeling that when legislation, rules and laws are put into place against any lawful government agency such as the military; your city, county or state should be denied any federal money of any kind for whatever reason.

Countless of servicemen and women have given their lives on the battlefield so that you may have the right to make these decisions, but you should not be rewarded financially.

One question that comes to mind. If your city were to be threatened or attacked, who are you going to call on to protect you? Code Pink? Your Brave citizens of your city?

If soldiers refused to come to your aid I can bet with absolute certainty that you and your community would be screaming because of your rights to be defended under the constitution.

“Peoples Republic of Berkley” – This is about what I would expect from a bunch of fascist that sit on the Berkley city council. You appall me! Let me put it to you this way, if you don’t like the freedoms our military have provided you, you certainly have the right to leave! I will personally donate a large some for a one way ticket for each council member to China, Cuba or any other socialist/communist country of your choosing, just let me know when you wish to leave! As a local Bay Area resident, I will be sure to boycott the City of Berkley in all ways possible! I have also demanded that my Senators and Congressmen take action to remove all Federal funding to the city of Berkley!

It’s bad enough to cower at home and allow better men to do your fighting for you. But to actively seek to deny them their right to recruit other brave young people to join their ranks is truly despicable.

Whatever may be said of the decision to go into Iraq in the first place, we are there now. Let me repeat that: WE are there now. Our elected representative voted on it. Our military needs and deserves our support.

The mayor and his council will happily enjoy the fruits of this nation’s liberty. Will they also summon enough courage to help our defenders protect that liberty?

Mr. mayor, go live in Bosnia for a few months and see how much you would value our military.

Ever since the Viet Nam War, a significant number of people have grown to distrust American leaders and hate the military. This now constitutes the leadership of the Democrat Party…with some stunning exceptions. This is also an historical legacy of some Americans’ partnership with Communism, starting in the early 19th Century. During that time, Communism and anti-American ideals seemed to make sense to those who believed that was the best approach to obtain “justice for workers.”

It turned out to be incredibly naive, as some leftists who visited Russia when Stalin was there…eventually learned. They came back and quit the “peace movement” and other socialist movements.

While I am prepared to admit that some actions by our Government have been excessive, regarding the Iraq War, I am NOT willing to admit that this was a bad idea…even if executed poorly, up to Gen Patreaus.

There WERE WMD’s discovered: Their names were Odai and Qusai Hussein. The Iraq War was justified if only on the basis of getting rid of those psychopaths.

I know I will never convince anti-war activists that the Iraq and Afghanistan War were necessary. I will not try. However, I believe that your arguments are extraordinarily naive and that you lack true understanding of the threat against our Western Culture by Islamic Fascism and those who aid it.

For myself, I will not patronize or supply any personal business to ANY business in Berkely, and encourage others to do the same. I do this with regret, but I cannot honestly support those who put your leaders into office.

These actions on the part of the City Council of Berkeley and Oakland of late have finally cemented a very disappointing fact in my mind and that is that I am totally ASHAMED to be from there, as I am sure my Mother and my Grandmother before her would also be. What you are saying and doing is absolutely abhorent and counter-productive to a free society. My Mother went to Clairmont High in Oakland and my Grandmother lived in the Berkeley-Oakland area for over 50 years. My Grandfather was one of the Curators at Berkeley UC in the History Dept., and I am totally throw-up sick to even say that they were important in the growth and education of/in those places.

I am giving my support to Senator DeMint in any way I can to make sure that the Government doesn’t support any of Berkeley’s businesses and Government Agencies or Contracts. Shame on your City Council and all the people that are helping you to subvert freedom in this Country that is filled with families of Marines and other Military Service personnel that have put their lives and futures on the line for your ability to have that freedom that you are blatently stepping on right now. May you reap all that you have sown in bad will, negative City influence, negative money in your coffers and loss of visitors to your area.

Claudia VanLydegraf, an ex-resident who is totally ashamed of having ever even gone to school there, also the ex-wife of a Marine who proudly served his country in the Phillippines.

Mr. Bates you are a Nazi. You have no business in this country and I ask that you leave it as soon as you are able. You and your entire city are a bunch of chicken shit cowards, not fit to breathe the same air as out troops and their families. I owned and sold a business in your town because I could not stomach the hypocracy of every day seeing how you and your efite elite treated the mentally ill and dispossessed in the name of lieral/socailist compassion. Should anyone desire to see how big the heart of all berkleyites simply take a drive down any of their streets and see, like San Francisco what liberalism and socialism are all about. Nazi’s plain and simple.

I cannot even begin to express my outrage at the City Counsel of Berkeley and the Mayor for taking these actions against the Marines. I don’t really care if you are against the war, that is your right. But to call our Marines and military men and women “traitors” and “liars”, and that they are “not welcome” in Berkeley is beyond belief. Our service men and women deserve HONOR and RESPECT! They are putting their lives on the line each and every day to protect our freedoms and our way of life.

I can’t believe that people like this are at the helm of city government in the United States. These people represent an entire city of hundreds of thousands of people, yet they express their personal bias and hatred for our military, and the views of a few wacko’s, and make it a city ordinance? It’s shameful.

I have written the Govenor, my Senators and Congressman, and the President to urge them to withdraw all Federal funding from the City of Berkeley. These extremists don’t deserve a dime of federal funds until each and everyone of them publicly apologizes to the Marines and all members of our military.

Mayor Bates & Members of Berkeley City Council:

The profound and blatant display of abuse in your position as Mayor, and by your City Council members as community leaders appalls me. What an astonishingly negative example you have set for our young people, when others in more stable communities spend a great deal of time and thousands of dollars keeping them on the right track.

What a message you send to our brave men and women who volunteer to protect us from our enemies. Men and women who put their very lives on the line so everyone can enjoy the freedoms they enjoy today, - so you can spout this crap about our Marine Corps being “intruders” and unwelcome in your city.

What a message you send to our enemies!

What possesses you, Mayor Bates, to vehemently denounce our military when you yourself served in the armed forces? Or was that just because you had to serve?

Is Councilman Anderson still bitter about being thrown out of the Marine Corp. for his improprieties?

What a message to send, that abuse of public funds is O.K. in protecting the new government of Berkeley, Code Pink; a free parking space in front of the Marine Corps. office, free permits to promote their obscene agenda, and this is the worst - police protection. These are the same officers who swore to serve and protect your citizens.

What a cruel joke, You are a national joke.

Mayor Bates, your message was quite clear, and now you try to back-pedal and tell lies about what your message really was. You intended to abuse of your position, your abuse of public funds and public trust, allowing an insane radical organization, Code Pink, to take over your city to disrupt innocent people’s lives – all these put together are grounds for recall.

I believe the voting citizens of Berkeley deserve better, they need to think long and hard about what kind of people they want in the seats you occupy to set policy for your city, Your voters need to think about recalling you all.

The federal government needs to follow through with withholding funding to your city until such time that there are responsible leaders at the helm.

Business people need to think about in what kind of city they are investing, and to pull major projects now on the drawing board.

What are you people thinking? Are you thinking at all? Some council members now feel shame for their vote – well, they should have thought about that before they voted to support that violent, disruptive group, Code Pink, and to disrespect our troops and our veterans. Whatever happened to Berkeley as a “City of Tolerance”?

You have no shame.

I am ashamed to call you a neighbor.

What you are doing is tantamount to pure and utter anarchy. You are weak to pander to these crazy pink people. When will you all grow up?

This is not the sixties when you can get away with sitting around the Haight or Telegraph Avenue smoking strange tobacco – this is 2008 when you now need to be sensible, to “do the right thing”, and make a sincere public apology to our wonderful Marines, the citizens of your city and the American people for your “sixties moment” and your anti-American rhetoric. Try to become the responsible people you were elected to be.

There Marines are not the problem here, you are, the pinkos are.

Think long and hard on that.

Words cannot express the anger that I have towards this goup of ungrateful, unappreciative people. I am sorrowful that any human being could live in thegreatest country in recorded history and denegrate the brave troops that keep us safe and properous. Our troops protect them to be stupid, yet if they were in Pakistan ( or a like country) they would certainly be punished.
