Clemens on Capitol Hill: Who’s Lying?

Are you watching the Congressional hearings on the alleged steroid use by Roger Clemens? Roger Clemens ended his opening statement in an emphatic way…insisting that he has never used human growth hormone or steroids. Never.

Brian McNamee continuing to insist he is not lying and that he did inject Roger Clemens. In fact he states today that now that he has had a chance to think about it, he injected Roger Clemens more times than he previously testified to.

So with both Clemens and McNamee insisting their positions are correct….

Who do you believe is telling the truth about whether Roger juiced up?

I will defer to the Body Language experts but, so far, Clemens looks less nervous than McNamee. So I am inclined to believe Clemens.

Comment by David Fisher

I can see who the Congressmen are who got autographs from Roger Clemens. Burton and Davis appear to be working on Clemens’ legal staff. What a disgrace. Those 2 can send me back the share of their salary I paid since they obviously are not doing their job.

Comment by Paul G.

I believe McNamee, but I also believe more than 75% of MLB were on juice. BUT WHO CARES? CONGRESS SHOULD NOT BE WASTING TIME AND MONEY WITH THIS CRAP.

Comment by mitch Townsend

Lets wait and see whose blood is on those Steroid Infested Needles!

I think both of them are probably full of BS!

If these Needles come back positive for Rogers Blood and Steroids, than what will he say then?

He’ll do a Bonds Side Step Shuffle ” I did not knowingly take any steroids”!

Sorry roger, won’t work, because the needles never lie pal!

Comment by Marc

The fact that congress is spending their time, and thus my money, on such inconsequential BS makes my blood boil enough but the fact that the media finds it newsworthy adds insult to injury. Two words. WHO CARES!!!!!!!!!!!!!?????????????????

Comment by Kimberly

Having taken American Government classes throught my formal education, I must conclude that I missed the lesson that stated that our Congressional body was also responsible for ensuring that our professional sports figures did not use drugs. Am I mistaken or possibly we’ve amended the constitutional powers granted to that body? I feel certain that there are budgets to balance, wars to fund/fight and other more pressing matters that could be attended to and leave the drug use to, say, the police department? I guess as long as you’re busy with busy work, one can claim they had no time to balance a budget.

Comment by Randall

I love baseball but with that being said who really cares. The government has nothing better to do. Lets see we have health care issues, economic, war, people losing their houses, unemployment but this seems like time well spent. Let major league baseball and its fans deal with this issue and let congress start fixing the country.

Comment by Chuck

WHO CARES. Congress, get back to work on the REAL problems of the country. STOP wasting time with this bull. Show me in the Constitution where it says regulating sports is part of your job.

Comment by wayne

Who really cares who is lying except the do nothing congress. Over fifty percent of the atheletes
were doing it. Just make a law to stop using it and move on. Let Clemens and Bonds and
the rest move on into the sunset. Do something important for a change……….

Comment by dorothy

WHO CARES?!?!?!?!?!?

Comment by John R - Indianapolis

This is not headline worthy news. It’s a sports story and an insignificant one at that.

Comment by Patricia

Who cares! You would think that the US Congress have more pressing issues than drug use in baseball. Leave the drug use issure to the baseball commissioner and get back the the business of the United States!

Comment by Robin

I find it hard to believe that someome can “MISREMEMBER” being told something as significant as steriod use by a huge role model. So far, it’s 2 (pettitte and mcnamee) against 1 (clemens)…and I’d go with the majority. Get off it Clemens, give it up, you’ve been caught.

Comment by Scott P.

Why are our elected “representatives” wasting time on this issue? Aren’t there more pressing issues at the federal level that need to be resolved?

Comment by Stephen

Congress doesn’t have anything better to do? Good Lord what a bunch of jokes we sent to congress. Let’s CLEAN HOUSE in NOVEMBER!!!!!!!!

Comment by jan fields

McMamee is lying, nervous and has some sorte of memory loss. What a snake! Can you say conflicted?

Comment by Concerned Conservative

Don’t we have more IMPORTANT things for our Congress to do, other than worry about sport stars who choose to inject steroids? I mean, since when should the Congress deal with this kind of thing? I could have sworn that they were incorporated by the Constitution to make laws. This is the kind of thing that detracts from the more important issues of the day.

Comment by Rod Tvrdy

Regardless of who is lying, the thing I find incredible is that the Congressional Committee
has found a way to make this partisan. How can a “search for the truth” such as this
be partisan?

Comment by Ben

This is the only news you have to report????

Comment by Kevin

Clemens is guilty of using HGH. McNammee has no reason to lie and Andy P. backed up what he has said. So if you believe Clemens everybody else is mistaken. I don’t by it. He should have come clean in the beginning and nobody would have cared.

Comment by annd dunavant

First of all , why is Fox News spending so much time on this “news”? But, most of all, why are our elected representatives spending time and money on this topic? What a waste!!!!! Don’t they have more pressing issues to address than whether or not Roger Clemens took a growth injection? Surely they jest! If the cameras were not there, would they be there grilling these individuals? Shut off the cameras and see how quickly they move on to other things.

Comment by Lyle

There are many more important issues than which sports guy took steroids. Remember who in Congress is leading this colossal waste of taxpayers money and vote them OUT in November!!!!!!!!!!

Comment by Steve

More importantly…who cares! Its no wonder we have a recession underway in this country, huge budget deficits, increasing homelessness. This is what Congress chooses to focus its attention on. Grandstanding to the TV coverage…professing sincere outrage over a case of HE SAID/HE SAID. Let’s see…taking steriods wasn’t illegal at the time, nor was HGH, so the only possible crime is Perjury. Geez…go tackle illegal immigration, go figure out who in the Bush administration outted a CIA agent, spend some time finding out where Bin Laden is hiding. I for one don’t really wish for my tax dollars to be wasted on such a trivial pursuit.

Comment by Martha Pauley

I agree with the previous comment and tend to believe Clemens.
Anyway, don’t these taxpayer- paid legislators have something more improtant to do? Government should stay out of sports.

Comment by Jocelyn

For crying out loud, this is not news and Congress shouldn’t even be involved.
Get this off your channel!

Comment by Dave Wobbe

What a waste of our tax dollars. Congress should be working on solving this country’s problems, not questioning a bunch of over paid primadonnas who are in the entertainment business. Baseball is about like the WWF. Let’s figure out how to get rid of the illegal’s, the morgage issues, the tax and spend goverment.

Comment by Robbie

I’m glad our congress doesn’t have anything more important to do than this…

Comment by Shrike

Who cares? Let them use whatever drugs they want.
It’s a game. So what?

Comment by BJ Frende

I don’t know what this is about and I don’t care enough to find out. Something about a game called baseball?

Comment by mike kelley

Congress needs to worry about cleaning out the FDA and Big Pharma. Those people are killing more americans than the war in Iraq. What the hell is congress even involved in baseball and steroids for.
There is plenty on the plate, and they need to get their butt’s in the seats, stay their and work out what is really wrong with this country

Comment by Brent

Clemens is not proven guilty. He should be presumed innocent! Congress needs to spend their elected time on what the people want like lower gas prices. Where is the probe into fuel price gouging?

Comment by Liz

It seems to me ,the person holding the syringe is the one who should go to jail!!!!

Can anyone tell me if Steroids are sometimes used to treat injuries??

Why would anyone without an ulteria motive save a bag of bloody cotton balls and used syringes?? Any thoughts on that subject?

Comment by Ted F

WHO CARES! Let them do whatever they want to do to increase their own egos. It’s fans who suffer from this stupidity.

Comment by Jay

Who cares? Surely Congress has something better to do with there time? There are definately more pressing problems than steroids in Baseball! How come Congress doesn’t investigate their own internal problems of corruption and why doesn’t the media cover that with the same amount of zeal?

Comment by Buzz Russell

WHO REALLY CARES!!!! This is the biggest waste of taxpayers money I’ve seen this week. Since when does congress need to get involved in baseball’s problems??? And lying? How can we trust what Sen Mitchell presented? Frankly, how can we trust anyone in the House or Senate??? I cannot believe what I’m watching here on Fox News. Someone not telling the truth here today??? Well I guess Congress would know about that. These are grown men in MLB, and if they choose to abuse their bodies, that’s their business, not the governments.

Comment by Pam

Are you kidding me?!?!?!? Who is lying??? I think the more appropriate question is who cares??? Our soldiers are at war and dying, people are losing there homes, children in our own country, OUR OWN COUNTRY, are starving and homeless, and our government is wasting MY money on this crap!!! What the *&#@!!! The baseball association needs to take care of it’s own problems and let our government take care of more important issues.

Comment by Anna Beth

The courts need to stay out of this.
Let the baseball leagues deal with this.
Congress needs to deal with more important issues to the American people, issues such as healthcare, reducing taxes, stimulating the economy, protecting the unborn, repealing the death tax, crime, drilling in ANWR or the Gulf of Mexico, terrorism and the list could go on.
It’s not the job of the federal government to enforce baseball regulations.
I wonder how many of those congressmen and senators would shutter at the thought of having to take a drug screening test?
The government needs to stay out of these kinds of cases.
It’s embarrassing.

Comment by Erin

The truth is usually somewhere in the middle. So I think that Clemens probably did use some. I think it’s a shame that his whole career will be tainted now because of it. That being said, what does the government have to do with it? Don’t they have more important things to worry about like say….the WAR…or American jobs..or illegal immigration?? What are these morons doing with our tax dollars? They’re policing baseball while they should be passing permanent tax cuts or actually doing the People’s business. Gross, bloated pigs. Get to WORK! We’re paying you to WORK.

Comment by jan fields

I think some of you are missing the point. “Its just baseball you say!” The trainers, athletics, coachs etc are changing history and damaging lives. Who’s stats are real? Who are the real winners. Not pumped up nimble headed feable minded inscecure athletes depending on supernatural injections to make them great! Show me the real winners, trained hard true to themselve and the sport. Oh by the way beauty contests are real too.

Comment by Hanna

I really don’t care in the least if professional athletes use steroids or drugs. That’s their choice and they suffer the consequences. I do care that our government is wasting OUR money on foolishness that doesn’t make a bit of difference to the average American. They should be going after the drug dealers. . . .not the users who are victims. We have major problems (like Iraq, terriorism, illegal immigrants, the economy, etc.) that need to be addressed. I’m tired of the government wasting my tax dollars on trivia!

Comment by Jim - Tulsa

I agree with all of the “WHO CARES”. Congress, get a clue as to what you really need to be spending my tax dollars on!!!!!!!!!!!PLEASE.

Comment by Martha Pauley

I also believe Clemens.
But if the whole truth were ever known,(and why do we need to know?) it was probably done by most players at one time or another and considered to be OK.
Anyway, don’t these taxpayer-paid legislators have something better to do? Or are they just seeking to make a name for themselves by smearing the names and reputations of players who are idols to of millions of kids?
Government should stay out of sports!

Comment by peter ashton

Who cares! Hormones can’t get you drunk like alcohol which is responsible for tens of thousands of deaths each year.

Comment by Denise

I believe Mr. Roger Clemens is telling the truth.

There is something sinister with Mr. McNamee’s testimonial and evidentiary motive . He made a conscious decision, years ago, to keep the gauze and needles he used on Mr. Clemens while he was under his care. He was setting the stage to cause harm to Mr. Clemens reputation and to make a name for himself. Mr. McNamee should not and cannot be trusted. He has shown a spirit of anger and frustration in his testimony, Mr. Clemens is showing his truthfulness in his attitude of calmness.

Hopefully our justice system will work properly and a fitting punishment will be given to him for lying to the committee and for wasting our government’s time and resources.

Comment by Marti H

Clemens is an obvious “control freak” and I think he is full of BS and about to BURST! He is shameful!

Comment by Kathy-Missouri

I think there are more important things going on in our country than this crap! Iraq, Economy, Health Care, School Systems, Housing Market, Etc…Who cares…THIS IS A TYPICAL WASHINGTON AGENDA, STICKING THEIR NOSE INTO THINGS THAT SHOULDN’T MATTER TO THEM AND SPENDING TAX PAYER $$$’S DOING SO.

Comment by Steve

I used to really love baseball, but like many other sports, and there are many others……steroids have made multi millionairs out of probably 80% of them. People comment that they do not care but the only way most of these players can do what they do is with the help of steroids. What really bothers me is that congress is wasting time with baseballs druggie babies, when they should be doing what they were elected to do. If the blood on the needle matches Clemens, then he should have to forefit every cy young award, and pay back the millions he made illegally. But we all know this won’t happen…will it? Marion Jones had to pay, and so should the rest of them. Baseball is artificial and more and more pathetic every year.

Comment by gerald echelmeyer

We have many issues that congress needs to attend too. Waxmen is just a mess and should not be elected again. He loves getting into the lime light of television. Congress will receive even lower ratings from this hearing. This congress and the government is no longer representing the people. The people have lost confidence in their governing bodies. I think this happened to Rome and Ceasar. If this attitude does not change we are doomed for a new revolution against all politicians.

Comment by Paul

Who Cares? Of the one-hundred issues congress should be holding hearings on this comes in at one-hundred and one. I don’t care if they shoot up heroin in the dugout. It’s just a stupid game. The youth of America needs to find other role models. Professional sports are all nasty businesses. This issue is between the players and their employers.

Comment by Robert

What the hell is Congress doing? Terrorists are walking across the border daily and these idiots are investigating something that is not even their business.

Comment by Scott

If Congressman Burton wants an autograph, why doesn’t he just ask for one? I don’t know who is lying, but someone is. Mr. Burton’s antics are just that, and are not getting us any closer to finding out the truth.

Comment by Janice M. Zimmer

Our Senators and Representatives have more important issues to tackle than that of a prima donna sports figure and what, if any, drugs he ingests or injects.

Comment by Mike M

Who Cares about steroid use??? I am dumbfounded that we are at awe when we find out athletes use steroids…most do and we all can see it. When I saw Marion Jones run at the Olympics and the announcer stated that her husband had bee band do its use, I knew she was juicing too.

The problem here is that we do not punish for using, we punish for testing positive, we punish for not properly tricking the tests. If not so, we would be dragging all these guys in front of Congress.

And this argument about how it is a bad influence on the kids….PLEASE!!! If we are so worried about the influence of the use by adults of harmful substances has on kids then we would ban alcohol, cigarettes, cigars, chew, etc.

I say, let them take their steroids. The side effects and their deaths will be the REAL influence.

As far as the integrity of the games: Two leagues of athletes…Natural and not so natural.

Comment by George P.

We have a threat in our national security form all over the world, our economy is faltering and we are using socialist programs to try to revive it, immigation is a major issue, we have massive debt and won’t stop spending. What is our government doing? Worrying about Roger Clemens’ drug habits and who the New England Patroiots are videotaping. The whole thing is a photo op for congress and a cheap display of pandering for publicity.

Comment by Megan

I totally agree with other posters - why is FoxNews dedicating so much time to this? I love FoxNews, and watch it most of the day while I’m working. There’s got to be more important things going on in the world. Congress is wasting OUR TAX MONEY on this, maybe because they can’t get anything else done and want to look like they are doing something productive. Let the various associations/groups that run baseball handle this, and ask Congress to do their JOBS that they are paid to do, by us. This is a total waste of time.

As far as my opinion about steroid/HGH use, I think Rush Limbaugh said it best - we don’t dictate to supermodels if they can have breast implants or not, which can also contain “toxic” chemicals. So, why are we dictating whether or not a baseball player can or cannot use a substance that enhances their performance?

Comment by madeline

i think im on instant replay, this is the kind of crap that went on during the last time the dems had control of the house and senate. stupid crap that has nothing to do with running this country or solving its problems. is this is what they were elected to do? i dont think so.

Comment by Ann S.

Does the US Congress not have anything else to do but engage in an issue that really should be left to the judicial system?

Watching this modern-day witch hunt (as my husband calls it) is sickening. It’s on the same level as Arlen Specter attempting to get involved in the NFL spygate…. since when is it the business of the Senate or Congress to get involved in sports matters? Good heavens, I didn’t know I elected my US Congressperson or Senator to get involved in these matters. What a huge waste of my tax dollars.

If these ball players did anything illegal, leave it to the prosecutors to sort it out.

Unreal.

Comment by Katrina

Who cares??!!!! We live in Washington, DC, love sports and attend lots of sporting events. But this takes the cake…Congress is simply wasting our tax dollars. They should be working on all the other issues that are important to the citizens such as the economy, the mortgage crisis, the war, homelessness, education.

Comment by k isaacs

Clemen’ s is getting railroaded.

Comment by Sandiegoecho

This should be left to law enforcement and the courts at the state and local level. What is the congressional approval rating?

Comment by Jon

I think it’s time to send all these congressmen a message and vote them out for wasting our time and the nation’s time on stuff that has no impact on our country. Then we can get on to the other group that is doing an investigation about whether the Patriots were cheating. It is the private sector and they have NO business asking any questions. It an abuse of power and they should all be impeached for the flagrant abuse of their power. You think they would have learned by now seeing how much the country dislikes and siapporves of our ELECTED politicians. Get rid of them.

Comment by sarah ile

Who cares? This country has bigger fish to fry and congressional hearing on this nonsense are a waste of time for everyone. What about the economy, Iraq, unemployment, poverty, etc., etc., etc.?
Congress should be ashamed of themselves. Let’s keep professional sports in right perspective–ITS A GAME!

Comment by Tres

Other than being on the WHO CARES? bandwagon, I suggest we all voice our displeasure of this charade directly to our Congressmen & Senators. It would be nice if they remembered….. We the People……

Comment by Carol

Why is Congress involved in this at all? Why does Fox news encourge Congress by televising this kind of nonsense. Who cares? Congress needs to read the Constitution and perhaps then they might decide that guarding our national borders is part of their job.

Comment by Wendell Summers

Who’s lying? WHO CARES?? With all the problems facing congress, why are they wasting their time and taxpayers money on sports. It’s a baseball problem - let baseball solve it. Congress and the courts should not be involved in disputes between atheletes and their leagues. If the drugs are legal, the government has no reason to get involved.

Comment by Cynthia Powers

After listening to the hearing today, I am wondering if Clemens does believe he was getting b12 injections. Why is McNamee keeping all his syringes and gauze unless to prove he was given hgh and knew that was the only way he could prove it?

Comment by Matt H

I love these people who say Congress has better things to do. Don’t ya think there are people who work on those things?? DUH! Like these people ARE THE ONLY ONES who can help with the budget or the war. Let THEM do their jobs! I enjoy watching Cheater Clemens get grilled.

Comment by Matt

13% approval rating and dropping… Oh, and great line of questioning Congressman Burton. I would like to know if he ever lied to his employers (his constituency).

Comment by Pat

Blood may be on gauze, but who’s to say the needle’s or jackets have not been re-introduced into a vial of HGH, etc. No authority can verify this.
Congress should be working on other important issues - like economy, or any other domestic issues!!!

Comment by Rob

For the love of Pete (not Rose), who gives a crap. Tell our legislators to get to work already. Jeez.

Comment by jeanne

Clements is just like Rafael Palmerio when he testified. Adamant about not taking, yet Palmero was found to be taking steroids only months later. Clements needs to spend a little time behind jail. That will be the best lesson for kids to learn from all of this. No ball player can lie their way out of the truth.

Comment by Vinnie B

Does this really matter? and why is congress involved with this anyway? just goes to show that the government has to have their hands in everything - even sports.

Comment by Jack Stiteley

FOX News should be ashamed of itself for even putting this into the catagory of news. This garbage belongs on E! or some reality show or perhaps Springer. It falls in that catagory for most of your respondents, and I would guess the majority of Americans. Lets get back into the NEWS business.

Comment by naragonl

Shame on this Congress!

We are at war, we have American people suffering, we have illegals flooding into our country and this is what they waste our time and money on.

Comment by Dave

Who cares about these idiots, why is our congress wasting our money on this foolishness, if these lugheaded baseball players (not exactly mental giants) want to destroy themselves to better hit a little ball (Freud could do much them) let them, GET ON WITH THE BUSINESS OF THE NATION.

Comment by frank

i would like for someone to explain why my tax dallors are being spent buy government offical’s
to investigate a private bussiness matter? we have for to many problems for these people to concern themselves with other than what happens in A GAME.

Comment by Ross Cook

Congress has its nose where it doesn’t belong, especially when they can’t even “fix” the real problems of the Country which the Constitution has assigned to them.

Who is lying? Probably the congressmen, but then they will never allow their constituents to invade their personal lives with similar questions.

It is a farce and a waste of my tax dollars!

Comment by Wanda Coleman

The trainer is a weasel; regardless, I’m with the other comments. If Congress is concerned with the kids, why not do something to stop internet predators and child porn and the many other SERIOUS issues facing our young people. This is such a joke but shows the truth about where we are as a nation and how our politicians think they are movie stars. They love to be in front of the camera and this is a great opportunity for that. If drug abuse is their concern, then CLOSE THE BORDER and stop the influx of drugs. Where are the hearings on that?! How I wish we had statesmen and leaders in America, not willy nilly vote-seeking want-to-be actors/actresses. Oh how tough they can act when questioning a baseball player!

Comment by bluziggy

Why hasn’t someone asked; Is it possible that McNamee injected Clemens w/steroids without his knowledge? Therefore, McNamee is telling the truth, and so is Clemens because he did not know which “cocktail” McNamee was injecting…

Comment by Brian

Congress has oversight responsibilities over baseball because it granted the MLB exemption from being considered a monopoly. That being said, I still find it rediculous that this issue is consuming so much time and expense. I do agree that the use of performance enhancing substances is wide spread, and that the use by professional atheletes gives the impression to young athetes that it is ok. The real question here is why has baseball not followed the example of pro football and outlawed these substances. The problem goes to the owners for not taking control a long time ago.
As to who is lying. There are inconsitancies with both but I believe that McNamee has more to worry about than Clemens. Neither are completely clean.

Comment by onemorecup

It is quite evident that those who work inside ‘the beltway’ are self-serving bigots. The only time anything gets done is when they believe their own best interests are being served. Mr. Mitchell’s report is about as credible as the Warren Commission Report.

I totally agree with those who believe that our ‘elected’ officials should be doing something far more meaningful with our money. Seems I was promised 1.4 billion for a fence that has yet to exist.

As easy and delicately as possible: These congressional officials are making fools out of themselves; they were given faulty information, and they have placed their opinions, careers, and faith in a report that obviously did not dot all their i’s or cross the t’s.

Comment by Tim

There are soldiers dying in Iraq and they are spending time on this. Unbeleivable!

Comment by Joe Lambert

Why is Congress and all the news channels waisting time on this? There are more important issues that should be covered.

Comment by Tony Zaccariello

With all the things wrong in this country, is it necessary that our congress has to spend time on whether or not professional atheletes are taking sterioids? Especially when the entertainment industry rewards people when they take drugs or celebrates someone who says they are in re-hab. Come on people. WAKE UP!!!!

Comment by Bob

Professional baseball should be conducting these investigations.

None of government’s business!

These particular member’s of congress should be voted out.

Comment by Ralph

This entire undertaking by congress is just another example of of their total indifference to the American Taxpayer and why they are in Washington in the first place. They need to be focussing their time and our money on fixing the health care system, lowering taxes, continuing the fight against terrorism, and ending America’s dependency on foreign oil. They should not be worrying about which ball player took steriods or which team was caught spying on another. They have more important things to be doing right now than this!

Comment by brenda

Somebodys lying. I dont know anything about baseball or body building but I also dont understand how someone could change their physical appearance like Clemens, Bonds & others without drugs. Look at the before/after pictures. What other explanation is there? Im willing to listen. We cant allow cheaters to break records set by people with honest skill, be elected to halls of fame or win medals. What kind of message does that send?

Comment by FRED

these clowns have no business investigating something that MLB needs to do…they are wasting our time, our money, while we are war…….Congress is one of the biggest problems in America
