SM3 Missile vs. Satellite

                   sm3_1.jpg

I have spoken with several contacts within the chain of command regarding this missile launch from the USS Lake Erie and included this picture of an SM-3 being launched during our trip on the Erie last year.  The crew knocked two threats out of the sky at the same time, the first ship in the world to accomplish this feat. Meantime, the SBX radar that I covered last year is also being used to track the satellite. Here is what I’ve learned.

1. The Navy has been in secret meetings about the satellite issue for several weeks and Admiral Hicks is on board for the shot.

2. Three SM-3 missiles have been modified to take out the satellite. Two are loaded and ready to go on the USS Lake Erie (the ship where our reports originated last year) and one is on the destroyer the Decatur. Erie is choice number 1.

3. There is only one window a day. The missiles are infared heat seekers and the sun needs to reflect off of the satellite for the missiles to find it. Thursday is the day everyone hopes for, but no guarantee’s because everything depends on weather.

4. From one of my contacts “if we hit it right, it’ll all burn up. We’re worried about 1 tank that holds 1,000 pounds of frozen hydrozene (sp?). If we don’t hit it perfect then the tank could fall to earth with this fuel that is highly flamable and toxic.” That is why the President warned about possible problems with the satellite coming to earth in pieces.

5. Both ships sailed out of Pearl Harbor. I have a good idea about their location, but as a matter of security will not release that info.

6. The SBX Radar (we also did a story on this monster….mounted on an old oil platform) is tracking the satellite, which helps up until launch time….again the weather is the final and key variable.

7. The SM3 missile is the only missile that can do this job. The satellite is roughly 250km above the surface and is outside our atmosphere.

8. The Chinese and Russians are calling this a ruse. Interesting becuase our satellite is at 250, while the Chinese recent test was at 800km above the surface.

9. The Missile Defense Agency is paying for this operation and is heavily involved along with the Navy and Pentagon.

For Susan - az:
Hydrazine is nasty stuff. It will be absorbed through your skin, burns you if you touch it, prolly causes cancer, all sorts of stuff you don’t want. But as a propellant, it is just dandy. As with a lot of things in the technology world, there are some bad things associatred with some really good things. The Germans had several varieties of liquid fuels they used in their Vengeance programs that would dissolve your flesh if you came in contact with the stuff. Now, THAT’S nasty !! That’s why the current crop of our missiles use solid fuels. Looks kinda like thick cake batter. The heavy lifters use liquids (Space Shuttle, Delta II) because they have a greater thrust output, but are assisted by solid fuel boosters for their immediate thrust. I thnk the Saturn V (the moon rocket) had something like seven million pounds of thrust. That kind of power was registered in NY state seismographs. Absolutely unbelievable what we can do when we want to.
But, as usual, the Navy comes through. For all the bad rap our folks in uniform get from the dinosaur press and liberals, there are none better in the world. Our folks are better trained, equipped and prepared for their mission than ever. In this case, the mission was clearly defined, well planned and precisely executed. But, having been there off the coast of VN shooting missiles at airplanes, to the folks in the ship, all they were doing was what they have trained for. The absolute most satisfying part of a missileer’s job is finally getting to launch one. The darn things are so expensive, we just can’t afford to do it as often as we would have liked. But, rest assured, it is a rush to pull the trigger and feel the whole ship vibrate as the round leaves the rails.
I spent 26 years in the Navy, and they were they very best years of my life.

Dave-

:D :D thanks

I am now going to call myself a plankowner- lol

Gary,

You asked if we’d be able to see the show…the answer is, I seriously doubt it. It appears they are looking to hit it as it passes Hawaii. It’s a ways away and it’ll be 150 miles above the Earth as well. The projectile that’s going to hit the satellite is kinetic, not explosive. It’s like shooting it down with a telephone pole. Maybe if we’re lucky we’ll be able to see a fireball like we would with any object coming down through the atmosphere but that too will depend on where it comes down. -Rod-

Comment by Dave

A plankowner is just a member of the first crew on a new ship.

Comment by Jen S

The USS Lake Erie has a Lake Erie connection!! Thanks Dave. Long story, but that makes my day! :)
Tammy—
Where are you today?
I’m sorry I left you yesterday and didn’t finish telling you about making a slide.
I would suggest using slide.com for that.
After making one on photobucket you use the direct link box for the slide show you make. Your slide will appear in your album and be marked as a slide, but all your pictures in your album are available for viewing when you post it. If you don’t mind that, that’s fine. That has been my experience anyway, so I prefer slide.com. If you figure out something different let me know.

go check out the thread- Lake Erie– and check out the 11:40 comment Adam wrote- the motto-

And thanks for the history lesson–

what does a plankowner do?

Comment by Dave

The battle was in 1813, sorry.

Comment by Dave

I was a plankowner on the USS Lake Erie (commissioned in 1993 at Pearl Harbor). The ship was named after the Battle of Lake Erie in 1812 near Put-In-Bay Ohio and Admiral Oliver Hazard Perry had “Don’t Give Up The Ship” on his battle flag. This became the motto for the new Lake Erie.

Here is a bit of trivia for you:
1. the Plankowner Plaques for the original crew were made from an oak tree that was alive during the battle in 1812.

2. The commissioning Executive Officer LCDR Gerry DeConto was killed in the 9/11 attack on the Pentagon.

Comment by Gary

All I want to know is if and when they hit it, can we see the show from Texas? Will the Bang be big enough to see?

I think we’ve all shut down the tracking site. Or the Ruskies took our satllite down. It was over Russia just north of China when the site went down.

Comment by Bill Monroe

As a retired Navy missle man, a few points to clarify some of the details about launching missles.
Modern fire control systems (they compute and direct the trajectory of the missle) are designed to compute an intercept course for several reasons. One is to conserve energy..once the rocket motor has burned out, the missile is coasting. A tail chase almost always ends in a miss because the target can accelerate or maneuver away from your missile. (Except in the case of the old Talos) Two, the apparent size of your target is larger from beam on (the side) or slightly angled from either the front or rear, so the missile gets a sharper ‘picture’ of its’ target. Three an intercept is usually the fastest course to follow. The sooner you hit your target, the sooner it is no longer a threat.
I would imagine some very bright folks have been on this for a while and have the i’s dotted and all the t’s crossed. The sailors and civilians in the misslie programs are the best of the best.
I would also imagine the real reason for the shoot down is to prevent as much of it as possible from being lost to unfriendly powers.
Hope this helps.

Dyann, I think that’s why I like David A., too. I suffered from vocal chord nodules several years ago and since I sing–it was very debilitating. It took me more than 18 months to get my voice back and when I was able to sing fully again…I ended up switching to alto from second soprano, because I was so scared I was going to hurt my voice again.

Kudos to him for not letting his paralysis stop him. Plus he’s just so adorable. He cried last night when he got positive comments from the judges. It was precious.

Comment by Dyann

I’m still here! I’m off this week…so I’m living it up and watching David Letterman. I work in long=term care (nursing homes). I am a Therapy Manager, which means I run the whole department; I also treat patients for about 1/2 the day. I just became certified in end of life care. It may be morbid to some folks, but I actually love it…the peacefulness that comes at the end is awe-inspiring. How’s the doggy?

Comment by Susan-az

Dyann-

if you are still here- what kind of people do you work with?

Comment by Dyann

By the way, Jennifer (Phillies fan!), I actually saw Milli Vanilli in concert back before they admitted to lip-synching. That won’t get me banned from this blog, will it?! ;)

Comment by Dyann

My fave is David Archuleta right now–I like him because he has recovered (somewhat) from a paralyzed vocal cord. That’s why he sounds breathy…see, that’s the speech pathologist coming out in me!! :) I thought it was kinda boring, too, except for the banter between Simon and Paula. I had to take a break from tv and the computre to watch the 5 deer in my yard–such beautiful creatures! I also watched some of the political coverage re: the primary/caucus held tonight.

Comment by Jennifer in ATL

That’s Michael Johns, Kathy. He’s the one from Australia originally and now lives in the ATL area. I liked both David’s…Hernandez and 17 year old David Archuleta. He was great and the judges loved him, too. The guy with the Milli Vanilli dred locks was good, too. Can’t remember his name, though.

Jenn- the kids got us started watching…..but they are out of the house now! Our daughter just graduated college - she is 23 and lives on her own. Our son is in college in Montana (we are in MN) - he is 20 - and leaving for 3 months in New Zealand on the 27th of this month.

So we watch - but is much easier to fast forward when it is Tivo’d.

So, once you get a chance to watch the gals, we will have to share notes….

Comment by Jennifer in ATL

Yep….my kids love Idol. We usually make it family time, but tonight was a little different. My two older boys got home from a two day church trip and needed some younger brother time on the XBOX.

No opinions, yet, but next week….they’ll be all over it. We have church on Wednesday’s, so we never get to watch then. I TiVo it, but they’re in bed when I watch.

What about you?

We have our reasons for making this decision.

Adam has breaking news

Comment by Dyann

Hi Jennifer–are the little ones doing ok? I had my first cat declawed many moons ago–he suffered no ill effects. He just had to use old shredded newspaper in the litter box for a week or so–I think he just eventually had his stitches come off without having to go back to the vet. My guys now are not declawed, but I just keep their nails trimmed. Like I said, to each his/her own. My ‘joke’ about you being a Phillies fan was just because I am from Pittsburgh, so there is always joking about the rivalry between Pgh and Philly. Hope there’s no hard feelings…

I look at it this way…I’ve had 3 kids. Each of them at some point bit or scratched me. Contrary to my immediate urge, I did not pull their teeth or their fingernails. I didn’t bust their arms when they hauled off and whacked me in the face as kids are apt to do. How is a cat any different? They are not just claws, not like fingernails. It’s more like amputating a knuckle. -Rod-

Comment by Jennifer in ATL

Yes, we de-clawed our cats today. Yes, it’s just furniture, but No…our cats are not outside. Ever. It’s a decision we made and one I didn’t expect would elicit this kind of reaction. Wow.

Comment by Dyann

To each his/her own–that’s my motto.

Most kids will lose more skin and blood just being kids than from a cat being teased or playing too roughly. Leather furniture is still just furniture. It feels no pain, it’s feelings aren’t hurt, it’s not depending on it’s owner to treat it right. The couch doesn’t care one way or another. -Rod-

Comment by Dyann

I have some friends who are totally anti-declawing. While my cats are not declawed, if someone has small children or leather furniture (for example), I don’t mind if they declaw their cats. I used to have neighbors who declawed their 2 cats because they had very young children, but then they put their cats outside. I do NOT agree with that, and I let them know it. The cats were wonderful and friendly, but I live in the suburbs, and there are lots of raccoons, skunks, etc. out, and those poor kitties had no way to defend themselves! Needless to say, I was friends with the cats but not with their owners–they ended up moving away, so who knows what happened…

Huh. I’ve got 3 Siamese. I might eat a cat to save my life if there was no other option. But I wouldn’t mutilate a cat to save some furniture. -Rod-

Comment by Dyann

Jennifer in Atlanta (the Phillies fan!) had her cats declawed today.

Comment by Patty

Not my kitties :-)
Hi Dyann, i missed seeing you yesterday.

Who got their cats declawed?

Comment by Dyann

Hello to all! What’s new this day/evening with everyone? It’s American Idol time here on the East Coast. Hope the 3 kitties are ok that were declawed today–I have 3 little ones myself! What did the wonderful Naomi Campbell do that makes her need a speech pathologist like myself?

Adam–I saw a pic on adamhousley.net of your Beemer–aren’t they awesome cars? I bought one for myself for my 40th birthday…of course, the monthly payments hurt the wallet, but it is SO much fun to drive…

KT,

As a point of interest, I’ve recorded 84 quakes and aftershocks in the SOCAL area since Feb 4th. 95% of them were in Baja. -Rod-

CALEXICO, Calif. — An estimated 5.0-magnitude earthquake centered in northern Baja California has shaken the U.S.-Mexico border region east of San Diego.

The Imperial County Sheriff’s Department says there have been no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck at 2:41 p.m. Tuesday about 21 miles southeast of the U.S. border city of Calexico.

The quake is the latest in a swarm that has been going on for days and was followed in minutes by aftershocks between magnitude 3.1 and 3.7.

Ok I’m back!!

Adam

it would be great to meet ya in Israel or Iraq for that matter (I don’t have orders yet) but I wonder if the Mid East could handle you, me, Avi and friends all in the same place?

I know that the Russians and Chinese would love to find some way to provoke an international incident over our missle defence system, what better way (in their eyes) to slow down or even stop our research and development than mere political pressure, especially if a weak kneed liberal is sitting in the White House.

If we are able to destroy the satellite in one or two shots the pressure to meet or beat our proven capabilities could cost them more than they want to spend. Even with those two nations experimenting with free economies I believe that they are still building a house of cards that will topple over if pushed.

Oil at $100 a barrel…when will our “leaders” in Washington (Dem @ GOP) decide to start drilling for oil that we know that we have in America? The recession that everybody is so concerned about is being driven by the price of fuel, that is being driven by the price of crude, that is being driven by the lack of political will to take care of us first. We can not grow and survive without oil.

Adam…i think you just did! *L*

Hi All. You’ve been busy!!
Hi also to all the “newbies”!! *waving* :-)

Just in the atmosphere, KT. It looks like if there’s going to be a shot tomorrow, it’s come between 24 and 34 minutes after the hour. For me that’ll be 7:24-34 Pacific -(10:24-34 Eastern). The restricted are vs the time is even narrower, about 25 and 31 minutes respectively:

http://satobs.org/seesat_ref/06057A/USA_193_NOTAM_unverified.pdf

Comment by Karen T

Rod, that’s trippy, we have a space shuttle coming in and missile going out. Did I read it correctly that it will be passing over a restricted area at that time? I’m probably not understanding correctly, do we have restricted areas in space or just in our atmosphere?
