Free Them

Despite what you hear from the Hollywood crowd and the hard-line supporters of socialist (elitist) dictators in Latin America, not everything in Castroland is so free and easy. Some reports would have you believe that Cuba is laid back even in the face of a U.S. embargo. Fact is, the leadership south of Miami has disallowed opposition since the coup. The latest comes from the group ‘Reporters without Borders’. They too were in Venezuela for the student riots and remind us that Hugo’s brother Fidel (and Raul), still has 23 Cuban journalists languishing in prison simply for doing their job without permission from a government that does not tolerate any independent press. Prison sentences range from 14 to 27 years for dissident journalists that “undermine Cuba’s independence and territorial integrity.”

They knew what they were facing…does that make them stupid or martyrs for the cause? -Rod-

I cannot imagine losing 27 years of my life because I spoke out for the greater good. As the 23 Cuban journalists sit in their cells, deprived of the very freedom that they were fighting for, I wonder if they now feel they should have not reported and kept quiet about the issues or if they feel they made the right choice.

I have a tremendous amount of respect for any journalist that puts their lives on the line just so we can be aware of what’s really going on in the world. If it weren’t for these journalist, we might have been clueless to the realities of the hardships that other people face in their countries. It is because of the reports from these journalists that we, all over the world, can make better judgements. I hope they will be freed soon.

It’s not difficult to see that socialism, on any level, is not good for human beings.

Adam,

How did the “Reporters without Borders” fare if they too were in Venezuela? What did they do differently? Were the Cuban reporters living in Venezuela while reporting?

Rod, it is the nature of “man” to push the confines of cages. Thank Heavens or we might still be “The Colonies.”

I realize that our position has been not to open up the lines of communication with the Cuban government, but it strikes me that this would be a good first step… demanding their release.
If we don’t speak with Raul, certainly Chavez will (has).

My moms parents moved from europe back in the day to Cuba and then when Castro came to power they left for Miami….

my grandpa always tells us that the minute he can go back hes going to go ….. and reclaim his property in cuba…..

What I have seen from Cubans that want the embargo lifted and are against the embargo is that in Cuba there is no guarantee. The movies I mentioned go into deep detail how much the lives of Cubans are scrutinized. From some recent report Rudy was the enforcer of Fidel.

I have no grand idea that Rudy will be a benevolent leader. I have The Lost City on my netflix queue list, it is about the brothers.

It is difficult to comprehend begin jailed for reporting. Here we can say the most vile things about our leaders – true or not. In Cuba, you cannot even speak the truth without fear of reprisal.

Sadly, the list of countries suppressing free speech appears to be growing. We see changes for the worse in Venezuela. And, Chavez’s pursuit of more influence over South and Central America. Continued oppression in China and North Korea. And, under Putin, in Russia, people are again being arrested and strong-armed into not opposing his hand-picked replacement.

My hope is Cuba can soon move toward freedom. Adios to the Casto family…….

This was just reported on FNC >>>

A 245lb Sumatra Tiger was found wandering around the Honolulu Zoo. The zoo keepers were able to coax it back to the cage. A cleaning crew was to have improperly closed the latch to the cage. No injuries.

Hizballah probe claims Israel used Palestinians contacts for Mughniyeh hit

February 23, 2008, 10:39 PM (GMT+02:00)
DEBKAfile exclusive: Last photo of terrorist chief Imad Mughniyeh shortly before his death Feb. 12. Only photo of him conferring with Hizballah’s Hassan Nasrallah.

DEBKAfile exclusive: Last photo of terrorist chief Imad Mughniyeh shortly before his death Feb. 12. Only photo of him conferring with Hizballah’s Hassan Nasrallah.

DEBKAfile’s intelligence report exclusively the findings of the special inquiry launched by Hizballah to solve the mystery of who killed the master terrorist Imad Mughniyeh and how.

DEBKAfile’s counter-terror sources stress that, above all Hizballah was keen to clear itself of suspicion that Mughniyeh was betrayed by an insider planted by Mossad, and this report points at Palestinians who are accused of giving him away.

Their investigators claim that the Israeli Mossad tracked him down through the Palestinian operatives with whom he recently rendezvoused in Beirut and Damascus to coordinate a new wave of terror against Israel.

The Palestinians he met did not know his real identity, they claim. He posed as a senior Iranian intelligence officer called Hajj Radwan, who was based inside the Hizballah command.

This information was leaked to the Mossad networks said to be working under cover in Beirut and Damascus, who then tipped Mossad HQ in Tel Aviv. They too did not immediately identity Mughniyeh, say the Hizballah investigators – until a description was built up of his habits and connections. One of these was Hamas politburo chief Khaled Meshaal. The Israeli agents, it is said, then put two and two together and came up with the dangerous terrorist Israel and the US had been hunting for two and a half decades.

Two pieces of information clinched the fix, says the Hizballah report.

One was the type of terror operations he discussed with his Palestinian colleagues: “Hajj Radwan” laid before Palestinian terror planners mass high-quality attacks inside Israel in conjunction with Iran and Hizballah. They talked about scale, targets, funding, weapons and manpower.

No one but Imad Mughniyeh was believed to have the breadth and skill to put together a complex Palestinian operation of this type and its detailed cooperation with Tehran and Beirut.

The other clincher was the fact that the “Iranian officer” turned up for all his meetings without bodyguards. In this Mughniyeh was unique. No other Middle East terror chief moves without bodyguards, but the Lebanese terror mastermind trusted nothing and no one but total secrecy. For the Mossad, his lone wolf habits were a telltale trademark.

The Shiite group’s investigators went on to claim that when the Mossad realized that Mughniyeh was within their grasp, they ordered two hit teams waiting in West Europe to set out for Damascus and Beirut.

The Hizballah finds support for its conclusion in the resemblance between the alleged Mossad modus operandi for killing Mughniyeh and the way Ali Hassan Daib in 1999, Ali Hussein Salah in 2003 and Ghalb Alawi in 2004, were killed. All three were Hizballah liaison men who collaborated with Palestinian terror groups on joint attacks against Israel.

from what i’ve read the embargo hasn’t really stopped trade with cuba, as many companies from outside the US still trade with Cuba.

And don’t forget all the Libraians.

K2 I am going to copy some links for you.

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000412/bio

IMDB has a lot of quotes about him and Cuba. He is passionate about loving Cuba and hating Fidel. Gloria is in that movie Auturo Sandoval. I think it is some of his best work.

http://barbadosfreepress.wordpress.com/2006/05/10/will-barbados-show-andy-garcias-cuba-movie-the-lost-city/

This is another movie he made.

I admit Andy is easy on the eyes but I think his acting skills are superb. For me it is a win Win!

K2 I tried in vain to post links!!!!

Go to Netflix and watch The Lost City preview, then go to IMDB and look up Andy Garcia. Read about the movie Auturo Sandoval, that is a great movie!

Free all of them and then talk. None of this talking with dictators without preconditions!! That’s like giving them your blessing. I marvel at the naivté of those who think this way, that you can actually talk around someone who’s guilty of the death and misery of so many. I guess history has taught these people nothing!! There’s a saying in Spanish that goes “más sabe el diablo por viejo que por diablo.” Translation: “The devil knows more because of his age than because he’s the devil.” There’s a lot to be said for experience and for learning from history.
