My Next Gadget?
by Adam Housley
I told Greta about this on the phone the other day and I was supposed to e-mail her the details, but then I remembered I took this video at the Consumer Electronics Show last month. This wand is very cool and would work great for those of us on the go. We could scan receipts, even send an internet fax if we needed to. There are other companies and products similar to this one on the market, but I liked the size of this one, called the docuPen. Tell Greta she needs one and that I have posted the info on my blog…she should come on over here to check it out! By the way, her producer Meade says I am a bad influence on Greta’s gadget addiction.

Adam…Have been thinking…which is scary…can we find a “wand” to turn back time, prior to the tiger story, to get rid of some extra baggage around here?

Oh maybe the time change on the 9th will help? *L*
Yes…Im being totally sarcastic.
Hi!
I am not surprised at all with this gadget!!! Electronics Rules!!! LOL
hahaha Adam encouraged Greta to buy a new gadget, by the time Greta buys it, figures it out, uses it a couple of times, a new and improved model will be on display. Then Adam will point out to Greta that he already bought the new and improved model and Greta’s will then be deemed ancient. It’s a vicious cycle!
Jen-
LOL
Here is a simple one by one of Adam’s favorites – Teddy Roosevelt
“Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.”
John-
Adam last year posted the same quote- I remembered it was Reagan but I didn’t know when and why Reagan said it- so I looked it up–
Adam can take the expletives out of me but he can’t take the cheating away- LOL
Florida–
the three here on my block who lost their homes- One lost his job at Kroger’s and he has not been able to find a job-
Anne across the street- Her husband left and she has not been able to afford the house- and she works two jobs and has three kids-
Sherry next door- is in the wrong business right now- She was doing mortgages- and she has not been able to close any deals so now she is working at a golf course waitressing and she got so far behind she can’t catch up- she too is a single mom with two kids–
Just bad luck– and the Polish lady at the end of this street husband got very ill and she was hit up with medical bills and had to move– Because he couldn’t work and she was a stay home mom-
On the next block, I have no clue as to why they lost their homes-
more hardships– We don’t live in a fancy neighborhood- middle class with single moms- No boats on this block- Just bad luck-
But I do see your point– I am very happy with what I have- I live a very simple life– my expenses go towards family members– other than that, I really don’t spend on frivolous things for myself– Can’t afford to- LOL

John, I never said it was easy to say NO to yourself (myself) when it comes it “luxuries” but that’s exactly what they are. I must set the example to my kids. Sure, I’d love to buy those $100 shoes or $100 jeans but do I really NEED them (even though I might look good in ‘em)?
Yes, I’d love to go see that movie but hey, let’s wait ’til it comes out on video. I’d love that 2009 SUV but let’s be real …can’t afford the tires, the insurance, the gas so let’s look at this USED smaller vehicle. Would love the big house in the “nice” neighborhood but…. IT’S ALL BEYOND OUR MEANS.
Those advertisers are smart but we must be smarter!
We could start an entire new blog on the subject of “bailing out those who are losing their homes” because of the afore mentioned reasons. best not to get me started. lol
Magic wands and politics …
“President Bush said I wish I could wave a magic wand and lower gas prices. And then he said I wish I could wave a magic wand and bring the troops home. And he said I wish I could wave a magic wand and fix health care. And I was thinking this guy waves his wand more than Clinton.” –David Letterman
I’m an equal opportunity jokester..
Adam,
true there are many Americans that do care but there is a problem. I believe that only about 10 to 15% of Americans truely care about what is going on around them, the rest only care about themselves, I’m sure you remember, “it’s the economy, stupid” as long as you are doing ok and are getting the toys that you want, then why woory about the political system. The Roman aristrocates did this with the Arena and bread for the masses-does this sound familiar to anybody?
The Republicans are the worst because they know better they are more interested in their re-election. The polititions would love to stripe us of our political voices and our ability to tell them Hell No! The time is NOW for us to TELL the idiots in DC that they work for us, we are not interested in pork barrel spending for our city, state or region- we DEMAND that they fix the problem that THEY made and do it NOW!
I feel better now gotta run talk to you all in a while
Adam..i think that is called being an enabler! *L*
Fl Sunshine………I think part of the problem is that we are constantly being bombarded with newer technologies, medicines and other “life enhancing” commodoties that are supposed to make us better and happier. We believe our own advertising too much……..most people don’t need blackberry’s, 102″ tv’s, cars that all but drive themselves (that’s coming BTW),pills that keep you “up”, or, as you stated, 8000 sq/ft homes. But, when we are constantly being subjected to all this, it becomes harder and harder to turn down.
What we are not told is, how we are pay for all that and still have some money left over for a rainy day………..maybe that’s why everybody is moving to “sunny” Florida.
Good going Greta
Welcome to our little slice of heaven!!!! I am sure you already know that whatever Adam advises will be useful. Enjoy your new little wand.
Let us know if you REALLY like it!!!
Susan………where do you find all that stuff?……good going. Now, do you remember which President made this phrase famous, “Let me make one thing perfectly clear……..I am not a crook”
I’d tell you his nickname as a hint, but Adam has already warned me about filtering me for using the term “thingy” , so I best not .
Ok..i will get this ..Adam convinced me
I didnt either susan! *crossing fingers*
Susan-AZ,
Please don’t read this the wrong way. Let me start off by saying I feel deeply for those who struggle financially assuming it is not self-inflicted.
By self-inflicted I mean; there were a great number of people who took out home equity loans on their homes during the real estate bubble and bought a vehicle or a boat or some other expensive item that was in most cases not needed. American’s are great about not being able to say NO to themselves when it comes to luxuries…..living beyond their means. Of course they in turn teach their children by example. Where is the pride in living dept free?! Why can’t people be satisfied with what they have?
Living here on the Space Coast I witnessed many people selling their homes during the real estate boom and “buying up” with a balloon mortgage not thinking ahead as to what would happen when their interest rate went up and could they afford it. For this reason and the one mentioned above – many people are being foreclosed on. Had they stayed in their smaller home or been happy with the car they had…I know there would not be the number of foreclosures we are seeing today.
Adam–
never mind– I found it- (Ronald’s comments about the debate with Jimmy Carter)
JIM LEHRER: That debate is remembered for several things. One of them is your line, “There you go again.” Tell me about that. How did that come about?… It was about Medicare. It came up in a discussion about Medicare, and whether you had favored it or not, early on. And you said, “There you go again.”
PRESIDENT RONALD REAGAN: Oh, yes. Well, at that time, some of the people who were proposing this, and I wasn’t against the Medicare bill that finally came along, but some of the people that were proposing this, it was obvious that they, in reality, wanted socialized medicine. And I know a little bit about socialized medicine as it’s practiced in a number of other countries…
JIM LEHRER: Was “There you go again” a line that just came to you spontaneously, or was it something that you had worked on?
PRESIDENT RONALD REAGAN: No, it just seemed to be the thing to say in what he was saying up there, because it was to me it felt kind of repetitious, something we had heard before….
I certainly hope we can change direction, the scary thing is as that if we do not change direction and it is to be a revolution, what other countries will “get involved”. Our last civil war took place at a time when the atlantic was still a formidable obstacle. Now with the world as connected as it is, what would stop some major superpowers from striking when we are most vulnerable?
unfortunately, our society has become extremely soft, and I am afraid our very liberty could be stolen out from under us.
Of course, I do believe we would prevail, but it would be an extremely difficult situation.
I do not think that the average american could withstand a lot of it, we see how they react to even simple things, the school shooters, hurt less people than the people trampling others do, how many people pitched in to help during the tiger attack?
I think that most americans need to take a long hard look at what they are made of, they can choose to be sheep, wolves or sheepdogs, and I think that in the coming years, you will need to be a wolf or a sheepdog to even survive.
And John–
to quote a President-
I didn’t inhale.
KT–
You were on the right track- LOL
Derek–
Last night at Walgreens, I saw a flyer which stated 300 home in my area where I live are up to be auctioned– This breaks my heart- people can not afford their homes and these are losing their homes left and right- We are concerned on this block too as there are a few families who are losing their homes- which means empty homes for uninvited visitors- crime -
All of us here in this neighborhood had flyers on our doors requesting if we see any suspicious activity in empty houses to please contact the police.
I am getting more concerned about what is just going on within my general area to now even worry about the big picture–
What a way to live-
Derek……..I’ve had the same sick feeling in the pit of my stomach for some years now, regarding the direction this country is going in. It’s quite possible that a revolution is pending if we stay on the present course…………..Let’s hope not, but history has shown us time and time again that she repeats herself……..and remember, our last civil war started because of economic pressures from within the country.
Susan I was multi tasking when I made that post and it didn’t come out right hahaha… felt really stupid when I went back and read it… have to go to a meeting now.
Adam–
Your picture of your bike is on your site too? The site I promised not to go into when you post another POD– which I hope is soon– I am in the mood for travel again-
Hint and hint!
And this one is causing a stir-

too many links– I guess one at a time-

I read the article this morning about the ex-sailor

Retread,
I am with you on that, our society is in serious trouble. We have lost our direction. I talk to people every day, that are completely clueless as to what is happening in our world. Our kids are idolizing the wrong people. I find it mind numbing when I am bombarded with “news” that is about 1 person or 1 group of people. I get sick when i see the incomes of some of the most worthless people on the planet and I see our teachers working extra jobs just to make ends meet.
I wonder where the parents are? what are they teaching their kids? why does our society think that it is ok to value entertainment over education?
Also, what are we going to do to fix things? I mean, gangs are out of hand, is it enough so to use the national guard? Illegal immigration is a big problem affecting numerous areas, from gangs, to drugs, to welfare, to overcrowding schools, to everyday life (press 1 for english).
Politicians make me sick, I hate that our system is so broken that even when we get somebody good in there, it is just a matter of time before they are corrupt or marginalized.
My father always taught me, that when the middle class is all of a sudden the lower class, there will be a revolution, I can see that happening very quickly, with gas prices, home prices, health prices and everything else growing out of control, more and more middle class are falling so far into debt that it won’t be long before they lose everything.
The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants(sic). We are a nation at war and numerous sides, terrorists, corrupt officials, monopolies, open borders, and our own selves.
I am afraid that our country is set on a course that most americans will not be able to stomach.

Adam – so what’s keeping you from coming to bike week? Simply come up with a grand idea of a story to cover down here and get an all expense paid trip and a suntan out of the deal.
Let’s see…
Option A: So many Harley’s are on the road these days. If our economy is so bad how can that be?
Option B: Did a large number of American’s sign up for Home Equity loans so they could go buy a Harley and are now struggling to make the payments?
Option C: Since bikers these days are not just the tattooed long haired law breakers (no offense to those who have tattoes and long hair lol) but a larger number are middle class, hard working, law abiding citizens ….wouldn’t it be a great place to come take a poll regarding the elections, ecomony or any of the other important issues of the day?
Okay, I’ve got you off to a good start. Now you sell it! lol
There’s also Option D: Were you aware that Daytona Speedway as well as a large number of other race tracks do not employee people at the concessions but rather “farm out” the concession work for school related clubs, charity organizations, etc. We simply get a “percent” of the gross sales. How’s that for a deal for them. They do not have to cut a paycheck (file payroll taxes) and they probably get a gargantuan tax right off for the charity contributions.
Of course if you cover this story you would HAVE to come visit me.
Adam… when are we going to get behind the scenes stories on Idol, please?
John!!!!!!!!
Patty………now, is it a “wand” or a “thingy” that you’re talking about………I’m confused…………..I used to have a thingy, but then I grew up.
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/17/books/17kaku.html?_r=1&oref=slogin
Terri, you’re talking about the book deal where he announced about the drugs he did in the past?
There’ll willl be change alright …
SOCIALISM
We will be the highest taxed people on EARTH if Obama becomes President…
http://www.ontheissues.org/Barack_Obama.htm
My entire family lives in Illionois and say he’s done NOTHING FOR THE PAST 2 YEARS in Illinois… too busy running for President and and pushing his book deal.
Wait I don’t think I wrote that right, what is an American-born Muslim convert??
I saw Frank Luntz as a room FULL of Obama supporters…
not one could say what Obama stands for…
they liked him because:
he was first black candidate…
he voted in the Senate…DUH… he’s a dang Senator….
and oh ya… he wants chhhhhange.
So,
Glenn Beck … Sean Hannity and Frank Luntz can’t find anyone who really knows what Obama is really about…
besides raising taxes…
allowing illegals to drive…
voting for amnesty…
oh yes, and voting NO to banning that gruesome/barbaric partial birth abortions…
oh… and NO to allowing parents to KNOW if their daughter that they are responsible for .. has an abortion
Again it happens… spies sending information to terrorists… I still do not agree that non-native born people should be in our military or access to highly sensitive data. The risk of loyalty increases. Being politically correct will not keep us safe. It may hurt a few feelings along the way.
Abu-Jihaad, an American-born Muslim convert formerly known as Paul R. Hall, was a signalman before he received an honorable discharge from the Navy in 2002. He worked in a UPS warehouse in Phoenix and has two young children, friends said.
Prosecutors allege that Hassan Abu-Jihaad sent details of the location and vulnerabilities of a Navy battle group to suspected terrorism supporters in London.
Abu-Jihaad, 32, of Phoenix, has pleaded not guilty to charges he provided material support to terrorists with intent to kill U.S. citizens and disclosed classified information relating to the national defense. If convicted, he faces up to 25 years in prison.
John..not politics…the wand thingy.
HAHAHAHAHA OBAMA really is blocked on Greats blog =/
did you ppl see his his costume pic on drudge ????
maybe greta blocked it purposely ? for a reason you can just speculate????
Patty………what did you start now?………Was that you on the Obama “test”? His name works here OK………I can’t say that Clin….Cli…….well, you know, that C-word, works too well here though.
John, somebody did ask Obama that. He responded with a watered down resume of places he worked, committees he was on and charities he was involved with. What he didn’t list was hot button issues that he voted on or bills that he cosponsored or authored. He doesn’t want people to know that in 2007, out the 17 legislative issues he was supposed to vote on, he didn’t show up for 10 of the votes. He conveniently didn’t show up to vote on FISA last week either.
ohhh I should have known you’d all jump on that! Didnt see that coming, duh Patty!
Sorry I sarted that Adam…can’t you control the children any better at your “House”? *LOL*
and I’m not even “going there” to answer back
Im still on the good list I think, but just incase i’ll be good
Retread………….another problem is that the “civilized” world doesn’t want to “work hard”, as you put it, to fix all these problems you mentioned. I don’t know what’s gotten into our society, but it seems that no one wants to take responsibiliies for their actions anymore………..just point fingers and hope that all will heal itself over time.
KT……….That’s what I saw, a tape of Hannity asking those supporters……..I would love to see Obama himself answer that question.
Derek
The civilized world? The “civilized world” is more interested in Britney Spears, Natalie Hooloway, American Idol, sports in general (I’m a football fanatic). The “civilized world” closes its eyes to the real dangers to its neighbors and to its self.
The leaders of the many nations are afraid of doing what needs to be done NOW. Look at our nation, illegal immegration, energy crisis, economic problems from the energy crisis, gangs running major parts of our cities, our families being destroyed, the infrastructure crumbling, schools not educating our young and our elected leaders do nothing but work to stay in power for the sake of power.
Unless we work hard now the barbarians will need only to wait us out, step into the void and get what they want with little effort.
My “magic wand” performs quite well in the bedroom……….and kitchen, too.
John,
Hannity asked that same question last week. One glazy eyed supporter answered… aaahhhh and the other answered, I like his foreign policies (I didn’t know Obama had foriegn policies). The remainder of the group kept their mouths shut. He might win this election if the Republicans don’t go out and vote. He’s leading McCain right now 47% – 43%. If he does win it won’t be because he’s the better candidate. They did an excellent job on his campaign, right down to the music video. It takes a few seconds to recognize that the music video is a political commercial. Got the viewers tapping their feet, they identified with that.
KT,
so true
obama! obama! obama! obama!
sucks
Derek, don’t think for a minute that we wouldn’t want the wand for the same purpose in a reversed situation.
Best question I heard all weekend, if not the best question of the campaign so far, was: Can you name one thing Obama has accomplished that would make him worthy to be our next president?
Even his own glazy eyed supporters had no answer to this one………….
LOL,
your right terri, that was a hardy har har
That does remind me of something, my three boys are looney toons fanatics, they love all of the old ones, road runner, bugs, daffy, marvin, the whole gang…we have DVD player in our van and three headsets (the BEST investment ever) well as they are watching it in the back seat they mimic things all the time, I can hear the three doing the bum bamp bum of the music and the “hardy har har’s” as they are played, it absolutely cracks me up, partly because I still enjoy the cartoons, but mostly because I remember me and my brothers watching the shows and mimicking the music and catch phrases.
Just thought I would share a glimpse into the 3 ring circus I call my life.
Will the word “Obama” post here, unlike on Gretawire where it is blocked?
Hardy har har!
Derek,
Patty, KT, Terri….
Silly girls, I would like a magic wand that transforms into playboy bunny. Guess it shows the fundamental differences between guys and girls.
The girls want a little help in the kitchen and the guys are not interested in helping (most of the time)
The guys want a little help in the bedroom and the girls are not interested in helping (most of the time)
Hahahahahahaha
Retread,
I am with you on the wiping them off the planet, how much is the civilized world going to tolerate?
I’m with Patty and KT
Patty you and me both!
AVI
As usual you are providing timely and accurate information. Many of Israel’s supporters here have been concerned that the cold blooded bast@@ds in Hamas would willingly place their women and children in harms way for political gain. But now that I think about it chances are that the current leaders of Hamas are like Arafat and their family members are in Paris or some other safe spot. Hamas needs to be wiped from the face of the planet. Any group of ‘leaders’ that would use their civilian population as cannon fodder does not deserve the support of the international community, they don’t even deserve the support of the Hollywood crowd.
Avi, please continue to keep us informed and be carefull
‘morning Adam and all.
Adam, I’d rather have a magic wand that cleans and cooks!
good morning all!
Rod, nope never taked to Greta…
she did email me back one time about the status of a truck driver in that bridge collapse last year…
(he was okay at first, but then he died later)
Max.
I loved Just Shoot Me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great pic of the bike Adam – only thing missing was you!
Any plans of coming to Daytona for bike week? I actually live on the Space Coast (near the space center) but I volunteer at the bike races to help raise money for my son’s high school wrestling team. I’ve noticed a number of bikers have already rolled into town a few weeks early. I think bike “week” has become bike “month”. They probably can’t get enough of our beautiful FL sunshine! Come pay us a visit Adam!
Susan: I loved ‘Just Shoot Me’
I wouldn’t want the brain gizmo, i’d give an excuse not to go to someone’s party, then they’d reply ‘that’s ok, i’m sure you still love me’ and i’d think ‘no, i hate you, hahahaha!’ and then they’d know i hated them. It’d just be trouble!
Max–
No, I have never seen David Spade here– my most favorite of all times and I continue to watch it when it shows on the tele is Joe Dirt– Ken laughs so hard too–
We need to send my neighobor too to that treatment facility- You can’t even have a conversation with her without her playing with the Blackberry- I think it is superglued to her. I wonder if she sleeps with it at night and showers with it too? hmm? It cracks me up on how she is so attached to her Blackberry.
Danielle doesn’t want a docupen.
My favorite is that brain gizmo on the other thread- that one looks like fun!
xxx
Adam: What we’ve arranged for you is for you to go to this treatment facility in Utah, you would get on a plane today.
K2: I thought it was fitting.
Susan: They used clips from the real show. You should watch his other videos. The To Catch a Criminal one is so so wrong but so so funny.
Did you ever see him perform when he was still in Phx?
Max-
cute video with one of my all time favorites!
K2… I just saw him doing a live report, bad connection. I didn’t know he was in town… he’s down by the Bellagio. He’s cool, but no time to fight the strip traffic and parking today.
Max – great video.
KT – Phil Keating is in town…are you going to see him?
KT: thanks, i think a lot of people might need a blackberry intervention!
That was cute Max!
I saw a very small scanner that does the same thing but this is perfect for students or people that are mobile like you.
Meade is right. They need to give her a blackberry intervention!
http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&VideoID=8907323
Enjoy the video
$300 bucks, I want it… I guess in the office it would eliminate a bulky scanner that takes up too much space.
Terri,
Have ypu ever talked with Greta? Email I mean… I used to til she got over popular and too busy. She’s a nice lady, has an aversion to punctuation
-Rod-
That’s pretty neat, Adam. I figured it would come to that eventually. I notice you were hoping it was wireless. Soon, I’m sure. It looks to be dual-use even. -Rod-

Palestinians plan mass rush on Gazan-Israeli border Monday
February 24, 2008, 6:46 PM (GMT+02:00)
Palestinians, swarmed across breached border to Sinai Jan. 23, plan to batter Israeli border Feb. 25
Palestinians, swarmed across breached border to Sinai Jan. 23, plan to batter Israeli border Feb. 25
Beefed-up Israeli military and security forces prepared to repulse thousands of Palestinians planning to crash the full length of the Gazan-Israeli border and its crossings at 10:00 a.m. IT Monday, Feb. 25.
DEBKAfile’s military sources report Hamas is engineering a “popular” protest to be much more violent than the Jan. 23 Palestinian surge into Egypt through the border wall smashed by its bulldozers.
Behind the human shield of women, children and elderly leading the assault on Monday, Hamas, Jihad Islami and Fatah are expected to shoot, send in suicide bombers and unleash a Qassam barrage. If Israeli forces are goaded into opening fire, civilian casualties may be heavy enough to draw international condemnation. If they hold back, the Palestinian terrorists will capture the border fence and knock it over.
By preventing a full-scale military operation against the Palestinian missile and terror campaign from Gaza and imposing a siege instead, prime minister Ehud Olmert and defense minister Ehud Barak have left the initiative with Hamas which exploits it to the hilt.
DEBKAfile reports “human chain which will “demonstrate” along the border from the Rafah terminal in the south to Erez in the north is organized by the Committee for Breaking the Israeli Siege headed by Hamas, although the terrorist group’s spokesmen claimed it is a “spontaneous” protest against the Israeli blockade.
Israel’s military and security chiefs are conferring urgently Sunday night with chief of staff Lt. Gen. Gaby Ashkenazi.
The Prime Minister’s Office in Jerusalem told reporters that non-lethal measures for dispersing crowds are ready to ward off the massive assault on the border fence in an effort to avoid civilian casualties.
After weeks, Egypt finally cracked down on the Palestinian invasion of Sinai when its foreign minister threatened to “break the arms and legs” of infiltrators. Even then, they were defied by the Palestinian invaders.
It looks now as though the long-delayed big confrontation between the IDF and Hamas will not take place inside the Gaza Strip but on Israeli soil.
HAMAS RALLY BORDER RALLY II
Israel: Hamas to blame if civilians hurt in Gaza border march
By Amos Harel, Avi Issacharoff and Yuval Azoulay , Haaretz Correspondent
Tags: Israel, West Bank
Israel warned Hamas on Sunday evening that the organization would be responsible for any consequences of a planned march along the Gaza Strip’s border Monday, saying any harm to civilians would be Hamas’ fault.
Some 40,000 Palestinians are expected to march along the Gaza Strip’s border in protest of Israel’s economic embargo on the coastal territory.
“Israel will defend its territory and will stop any infiltration attempt into its sovereign borders,” Defense Minister Ehud Barak and Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni said in a joint statement sent to all Israeli embassies and missions.
“Hamas is behind activities that place the civilian population on the front lines,” the statement added.
The Israel Police will heighten security across the country on Monday, as intelligence officials warned that tens of thousands of Gazans were planning to form a human chain from Rafah to the Erez border crossing as early as 10 A.M. on Monday.
The Israel Defense Forces has already beefed up troops along the border, in preparation for the march, expected after gasoline ran out in Gaza over the weekend.
A large number of police forces will be deployed to join the IDF in the southern district, in case the protest gets out of hand.
The head of the Palestinian Popular Anti-Siege Committee protest, Jamal al-Khudary, said: “We do not have intentions of approaching the fence, either in the north or the south. We hope all the participants will abide by the instructions and we will try to prevent any violations.”
He also said the protesters would not try to confront IDF troops.
An official Hamas source maintained that the mass flow towards the border – which will comprise Palestinian women and children – would be spontaneous and was not based concrete plan.
However, he added that the next time Gaza residents decide to rally the economic embargo, the protest would be held only on the border with Israel, and not the border with Egypt.
A security source in Jerusalem said the army was preparing for “all scenarios” ahead of Monday’s protest.
“Obviously, if gunmen start shooting at the fence we will have to respond in kind and we are absolutely unwilling to countenance a situation where the fence is breached like it was at Rafah,” the source said.
IDF troops on the border have been issued special open fire orders in order to stop even a small number of protesters from crossing the fence, and the army has demarked especially sensitive areas.
If necessary, IDF artillery will fire warning shots at open areas, and should the protestors continue their advance, troops will employ riot dispersal methods.
As a last resort, snipers will open fire at protestors legs. The orders were approved by senior General Staff officers as well as Defense Minister Ehud Barak.
The IDF also said that all Gaza crossings would be closed Monday, including to foreign nationals and journalists.
The gasoline shortage was the result of limitations imposed by Israel on imports into the Strip, excluding fuel for emergency vehicles. Diesel fuel is also said to be in short supply.
Israel’s concerns are based on the breach of the Gaza-Egyptian border a month ago, when hundreds of thousands of Palestinians streamed across Rafah into Egypt after Hamas blew up the wall there.
Israel believes Hamas is now planning a new action, directed at Israel, to break the siege on the Gaza Strip and draw global attention to the plight of Gaza’s impoverished residents.
Two Qassams fired from Gaza, one strikes western Negev
Palestinian militants in Gaza on Sunday fired two Qassam rockets at southern Israel, Army Radio reported.
One of the rockets struck an open field in the western Negev and the other landed in Palestinian territory. No injuries or damages were reported in either incident.
Also on Sunday, IDF forces uncovered five tunnels used for weapons smuggling during an operation in Dahaniyeh, in the southern Gaza Strip.
Meanwhile, three Palestinians were killed Saturday afternoon in an Israel Air Forces strike on Beit Hanun in the northern Gaza Strip. Sources in the Strip said the dead were civilians. The IDF said the three had been observed attempting to launch a mortar shell at Israel.
Two armed Palestinians were also killed in other incidents in the Gaza Strip.
Hamas declared Saturday as an international day of protest against the siege. Anti-Israel rallies were held in a number of Arab and European countries. Thousands of Palestinians attended the main demonstration in Gaza City, marching to the United Nations headquarters. The IDF deployed a number of battalions near the fence in the northern Strip to prepare for possible Palestinian attempts to breach the border.
The IDF Gaza Brigade has been conducting exercises simulating mass civilian marches, outfitting the soldiers with riot-control gear. The army is concerned that Palestinians may try to take over crossings on the Israel-Gaza Strip border, and that Hamas intends to march them into a Jewish community near Gaza.
Military sources cite the “Hezbollah precedent”: The sign that the buffer zone in southern Lebanon was collapsing on the eve of the IDF’s withdrawal in May 2000 came when the Southern Lebanese Army abandoned the Taybeh post and hundreds of unarmed Lebanese civilians marched on it.
Meanwhile, Gaza residents Saturday told Haaretz that their cars are “stuck” and they are using taxis or wagons hitched to donkeys. “At most of the gas stations you can’t find diesel either,” Imad, a Gaza resident, said.
Security officials told Haaretz they are meeting their pledge to the Supreme Court to transfer fuel for emergency vehicles, approximately 75,000 liters a week.
A delegation of Hamas and Islamic Jihad members met over the weekend with representatives of Egyptian intelligence in El Arish to discuss opening the Rafah border crossing. This was their third meeting in the past 10 days. News agencies reported that the Egyptians told the Palestinians that they will thwart any more attempts to rush the border.
A Hamas spokesman in the Strip, Ayman Taha, said that the parties had reached an understanding regarding the expected release today of 105 Palestinians arrested by the Egyptians in Sinai. Those arrested were apparently mainly armed activists.
