Hola…yo quiero un meeting.
On the day we hear that rebels being expelled by Colombian and U.S. forces are freely setting up shop in neighboring Venezuela, along comes another Chavez maneuver in Venezuela. This time he makes a point to encourage Venezuelans to keep their language strong, but blaming english computer terms on U.S. Imperialism? Th story from the Associated Press follows the link. What do you think? HERE’S THE LATEST WIRE ON THIS:CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) - President Hugo Chavez’s government is taking its battle against U.S. “imperialism” into Venezuelans’ dictionaries, urging state phone company workers to avoid English-language business and tech terms.Through a campaign launched Monday, newly nationalized CANTV hopes to wean employees and others from words like “staff” (”equipo” is preferred), “marketing” (”mercadeo”) and “password” (”contrasena”).Stickers and banners printed up by the company exhort Venezuelans to “Say it in Spanish. Say it with pride.”The Communications and Information Ministry said in a statement that Venezuelans must recover Spanish words that are “threatened by sectors that have started a battle for the cultural domination of our nations.”Other English words targeted include “mouse” (the company prefers “raton”), “meeting” (”reunion”) and “sponsor” (”patrocinador”) - all of which have become common in Latin American countries. The leftist president has sought to counter what he calls U.S. cultural imperialism on all fronts, financing Venezuelan cinema as an alternative to the “dictatorship of Hollywood” and forcing radio stations to play more Venezuelan music.English is still taught in schools alongside other languages, however. And Chavez himself often breaks playfully into English during speeches, sometimes to salute his close friend, former Cuban leader Fidel Castro, saying: “How are you, Fidel?”

Grrr… he’s such a freak.
hummmm Adam…this didn’t look like a POD to me? *L*
My boss cmplained this morning about his call to a credit card company, he couldnt understand a word they said….must have been in chavez territory!
France did the same thing in the 90’s. they even havea department in the government to make up french sounding words for high tech english words like (CD)Compact Disk, KeyBoard, etc.
Picture of the Day
*LMAO*!!!!!!!!!
I’ll give ya a break on that one Adam *still laughing*….your mind was “in” Caracus, i just sort of snuck in there!
Adam……like you said, he does have a point……..look at how many people in this country are upset about having the dual English/Spanish signage……….or, the “press 1 for English” instructions now given with every call to a business.
John, We are gov’t, you can call our office and you get a “real” person, and you do not push 1 for english
Although, we are also in the middle of the contry, so that makes a difference too.
This is part of an email I received regarding the cost of Illegal Aliens per year. KT has posted this on her site. But, it seems fitting for this topic.

A conversation between a Customer and Bank of America Bank:
The Bank: Bank of America, can I help you?
Customer: Yes, I want to cancel my account. I don’t want to do business with you any longer.
The Bank: Why?
Customer: You’re giving credit to illegal immigrants and I don’t think it’s right. I’m taking my business elsewhere.
The Bank: Well, Mr. Customer, we don’t want to see you do that, but we can’t stop you. I’ll help you close the account. What is your account number?
Customer: (gives account number)
The Bank: For security purposes and for your protection, can you please give me the last four digits of your social security number?
Customer: No?
The Bank: Mr. Customer, I need to verify your information, but in order to help you, I’ll need verification of who you are.
Customer: Why should I give you my social security number? The reason I’m closing my account is that your bank is issuing credit cards to illegal immigrants who don’t have social security numbers. You are targeting that audience and want their business. Let’s say I’m an illegal immigrant and you’ve given me a credit card. I have a question about it and call for assistance. You wouldn’t be asking me for a Social Security number, would you?
The Bank: No sir, I wouldn’t.
Customer: Why not?
The Bank: Because you would have pressed ‘2′ to speak in Spanish. We don’t ask for that information when calling in on the Spanish line.
Patty……….wow, you mean you are a real person? Not a PC with that latest Microsoft auto-reply software?………..Hold on, I’ve got to tell my progammer.
Hey John…….JOHN. There’s a real human on this blog,……. what do I do?……..Oh, OK
He said he’ll get back to you after lunch………chow.
If we set aside the fact that this is just another way attention from the problems in the country, there is a lot to be said about trying to keep your language strong, but to use technology as an example is utterly stupid. If there is an equivalent term in Spanish, use it, but not in technology where changes are taking place so quickly. If Spanish were to wait for anointing of a term by the Royal Academy of Language, the term would be obsolete before they got around to it! On the other hand, language is a living thing, it mutates and changes and can be enriched by foreign terms. Hugo has it wrong. The way people massacre the language with neologisms and misspelling is what is harming it, not foreign technology terms.
*LOL*
Picture of the Day…
OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH…
I did NOT know what POD was.
Sorry.. should check what I write… It should say “another way of diverting attention…”
Adam, I work with language and this is a pet topic of mine.
Hugo cracks me up
OT. Have you noticed the infighting in recent weeks among Chavez’ followers? All is not well in Hugoland.
Venezuelans should be speaking in their own language, in their own country. I support that. It’s the intent of Chavez to enforce this that’s the problem. Control, control, control.
K2, thanks for the plug hahahaha
POD
As usual going a little overboard and blaming it on the USA.

What does Adams heading say here?
BTW– American Idol is on tonight if anyone is interested.
My raton will get to take a nap from
8-9:30 est while I watch Fox.
Adam, I hope you’re not still in brain freeze mode…..hint…
Patty–
it says: Hello…you need to watch American Idol.
Jen…
I thought maybe… Hello….i forgot to give the Idol behinds the scene stuff!
Patty
You’re correcto!
Patty - It literally says “Hi, I want a meeting!”
Slight digression……..I don’t know how everybody feels about the NY Philharmonic’s concert in North Korea today, but I’ve always found it interesting to note that, through music, all humans share the same basic language. Music does not hold the language barriers that normal verbal, or written languages hold. If you were to start playing an instrument in a foreign land, it probably won’t be long before you have company with one of the locals joining you in “musical conversation” (or jamming, as we used to call it)……..Makes you wonder, are we really using the best possible means to communicste with one and other………or does the natural kingdom have us beat when it comes to ‘global’ communication…….Like birds, whales, dolphins.etc
Thanks Marie!
adam,
how come Fox didnt spend no body to NORTH KOREA…. they shouldve sent you since you almost went there along time ago ??
John, very true!!!! music is the universal language.
John,
a composer for president? lmao
Avi………I like that idea, and instead of debates, we can have Battle of the Bands contests.

Speaking of Composers,,,,here are the lyrics to Monty Python’s Decomposing Composers song.

Intro: Right ho, darling. Yeh, be home
(spoken) about 8:30. No, no I’ll go on a
bike.
Verse: Beethoven’s gone but his music lives on,
And Mozart don’t go shoppin’ no more,
You’ll never meet Liszt or Brahms again,
And Elgar doesn’t answer t

Schübert and Chopin used to chuckle and laugh,
Whilst composing a long symphony,
But one hundred and fifty years later,
There’s very little of them left to see.
Chorus: They’re decomposing composers,
There’s nothing much anyone can do,
Y
ou can still hear Beethoven,
But Beethoven cannot hear you.
Verse: Händel and Haydn and Rachmaninov,
Enjoyed a nice drink with their meal,
But nowadays no-one will serve them,
And their gravy is left to congeal.
Verdi and Wagner delighted the cro
wds,
With their highly original sound,
The pianos they played are still working,
But they’re both six feet underground.
Chorus: They’re decomposing composers,
There’s less of them every year,
You can say what you like to Debussy,
But there’s not m

Finish: Claude Achille Debussy, died 1918.
Christophe Willebaud Gluck, died 1787.
Carl Maria von Weber, not at all well

Thanks Marie!!
we’re wrong…this isn’t the american idol Reunion thread ?
(Just being silly here.)
John you are right in step ??? now go tell Hugo.
my dad was in downtown miami at the law library when the power went off the it went back on…. ( hes a lawyer fyi)
his office got power ( north mia)
I watched the last part of that concert live this morning. They played a famous Korean song/composition and it was interesting to see the facial expressions of the members of the audience……..for just a few moments it seemed that whatever barriers there are between us and the North Koreans that they were lowered a bit.
Reminded me of stories my dad and grandfather used to tell about the occupation of Holland by the Germans during WWII. Even the German soldiers ( their regular army, Whermacht(sp), not the Nazis or SS ) that were patroling the streets would stop and listen to music being played from apartments or cafes. You could tell by their body language, they used to say, that for those short precious moments while they were listening, there was no war.
if power is our life line we are in big trouble ……….
John-
so touching-so sad-so true-so good-so powerful.
Put me in a place to stop and say -thanks for sharing that. ?
I think MTV should have a presidential music debate …. who can play an instrument the best or w/e lol ……

It’s hardly our fault that Venezuela was nowhere to be found when US scientists were building the first computers with vacuum tubes, nor our fault that two kids in a garage in California cobbled together the first consumer-oriented computer. It weren’t US imperialism that led Bill Gates to write the DOS operating system. That was just all yankee ingenuity, made possible by the fact that capitalism allows for innovation (whereas socialism starves it). Fact is, Hugo, those terms that you’re forcibly translating into spanish still equate to the terms devised by US!
Whether you call it a mouse or a Raton, the gizmo and the concept behind the name…is OURS.

I agree with Chavez….when in Venezuela speak Spanish and when in America speak ENGLISH. Now making up words to fit technology is stupid but what you expect from fat boy who likes coca leaves?

Heck, whatever happened to the word gay just meaning happy, or a fairy being one of those ethereal creatures? So if I say I am gay, will everyone look askance at me, even though I’m the mother of three daughters?
isn’t that the truth marie!!
This guy is a very unstable fellow. Unfortunately, he’s developed too much power in our hemisphere.
What can you say… it’s probably some sort of statement against America’s stance on illegal immigration and the contention by most that English (here) should not be a second language.
Tammy so true! If only I could hear Englais most of the day. I mean English. I am going to start speaking french when I get mad about the Spanish being spoken. Okay I won’t but I want to!
Adam you have been away from us far too long! Did you ever read my message to you from the SuperBowl slideshow?
Hello all,
Indeed, Chavez wanted to do this but what you don’t know is that Chavez himself ignores proper spanish. In his hiddeous TV program “Alo Presidente” he has destroyed the spanish language mentioning words he only knows such as:
ESPIONAR: (to Spy). Correct word is ESPIONAR
ADQUERIR: (to acquire). Correct word is ADQUIRIR
REEVER: (to review). Correct word is REVER or REVISAR
His spanish is poor in general, very limited and errors are common.
This is only a distraction from the real tragedies venezuelans have…

US to go after billions in laundered Venezuelan money26 February 2008
Reliable Washington sources report that the Treasury Department of the United States, and other government agencies, whilst searching for assets held in financial institutions in connection with the ongoing Global War on Terrorism, have identified billions of dollars of laundered funds worldwide, all secreted by key senior Venezuelan government officials, a few military officers, and a large number of Politically Exposed Persons (PEPs), for their own corrupt use and benefit, and for that of designated global terrorist organisations, on the express orders of President Hugo Chavez.

Thanks Juan, here in Tx there is “slang” spanish and proper spanish. It is almost like dialects, but different. I have been told you can tell how educated a person is by the spanish they speak.
This was posted in late 2005 but was still intersting
Radical Islam in Latin America
In the wake of the September 11 attacks, the possibility of al-Qaeda infiltrating Latin America became a priority for U.S. intelligence and law enforcement officials. However, the most publicized incidents of radical Islamist activity in Latin America have not been linked to al-Qaeda but instead to the Lebanese Shi’ite Hezbollah, which is ideologically and politically close to Iran. These include the March 1992 bombing of the Israeli Embassy in Buenos Aires, Argentina and the July 1994 attack against the Argentine-Israeli Mutual Association (AIMA), also in the Argentine capital, allegedly in retaliation for Israel’s assassination of former Hezbollah leader Sheikh Abbas al-Musawi and his family in February 1992.

Yes Kathy, that’s correct, you can almost determine a person’s education by the spanish he speaks.
KT, Hezbollah is in Venezuela. There’s a direct flight Caracas-Teheran where people speculates that there are trafficking with “boxes” and unknown cargo.
Chavez and radical muslims are working on something. Some people says that Chavez already has long range Iranian missiles either pointed to neighbor Colombia or the US.
Juan, airport security? Private airlines? How’s that process working?
Adam, do you have any information on this? Especially interested in the long range missiles and the diection that they are pointing in.

Release of 4 Hostages Near in Colombia
BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — Venezuelan helicopters have been given the green light to fly into Colombia on a mission to recover four rebel-held hostages after more than six years of captivity, a Red Cross official confirmed on Tuesday.
The rebels will turn the hostages over to officials of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez’s government.

Hola–
Kathy-
proper Spanish is Castellian-
dialects surfaced after this- infiltrations of the Spaniards-

What is happening? Venezuela’s Chavez should be in the list of terrorists.
oops–Castilian-
http://www.trustedtranslations.com/castilian_spanish.asp
Alfredo– great link-
The United States has found active financial and political links between the Venezuelan government and the following designated global terrorist organisations, all of which operate within Venezuelan territory, with the explicit permission and support of the Chavez government:
Hizballah
Hamas
Al-Qaeda
FARC
ELN
ETA
Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps
Moreover, the illegal fund-raising activities these groups engage in, whether they be narcotics trafficking, arms smuggling, extortion, human smuggling, or other types of crime, are allowed to flourish, even though some of the acts take place in, or through, Venezuelan territory. Frankly, we welcome any action by the United States against these terrorist groups, which have been operating freely in Venezuela for years. the FARC, for example, has well-established base-camps on the Colombian border, so that its leadership can evade the Colombian Ejercito, that country’s powerful army. Do you not remember this writer’s recent piece on the placement, by Venezuela, of missiles on the Colombian border? Those weapons are in direct support of the FARC.
Several of the senior Venezuelan money launderers must have been made aware ……
Alfredo–
I too think Chavez is more than dangerous– He needs to be a priority on the radar– you know he is surrounding himself with militia- the above is not new to me– He needs to be watched closely as he scares me–
Chavez should be on the list- as he supports AND CONDONES these actions by terrorist groups-
What does Barack Hussein Obama has to say about this?
Many of the democrats from Venezuela, living in the United States that I know, are voting for Mc Cain if Barack Hussein Obama wins the nomination.
and now with Nader in the rece dividing the democrats, Mc Cain has a big chance to win.

http://www.elmundo.com.ve
Caracas.
