An Israeli killed, several injured, in heavy Palestinian missile-mortar barrage Wednesday

February 27, 2008, 5:02 PM (GMT+02:00)

DEBKAfile’s military sources report that in the space of one and-a-half hours 30 Qassam missiles and dozens of mortar shells crashed into Sderot, Shear Hanegev and south of Ashkelon Wed. afternoon, Feb. 27. A man of 40 was killed and a 20-year old critically wounded beside a car which took a direct hit parked at the Sapir College as did the Off Kor factory outside Sderot. There was widespread panic. The barrage followed the Israeli airborne rocket attack, which killed 7 members of Hamas’ armed wing driving on a bus to a Hamas military facility near Khan Younes in the southern Gaza Strip.

Palestinian sources reported that three of the seven dead were senior members of the Hamas Qassam Brigades’ missile unit and were bound for a training session at a southern Gaza facility.

The Israeli air forces struck back at the Qassam launchers. The Palestinians report at least one fatality.

Monday, a nine-year old Israel boy was seriously injured by a Qassam rocket which hit a group of children playing in Sderot.

On the West Bank, a wanted Palestinian was killed and 4 injured, two seriously, resisting arrest by an Israeli counter-terror unit in Nablus. The group was suspected of plotting a large-scale terror attack in central Israel. Two were on the list of Fatah armed wing members granted Israeli amnesty, provided they renounced violence.

Those certainly are awesome pics.
YOU took those?

Avi,
oh no.. that’s awful.

Comment by Derek

I have fought a lot of different fighters in the world, from all parts. I have trained with more than I have fought with. I was extremely impressed with south Koreans and tribal afghan warriors.

That said, pound for pound, Israeli’s are the toughest bunch I know, particularly the counter terrorism group. All these countries that continually attack Israel just do not seem to get the fact that the reason their are still a country is because the United States has kept Israel from destroying them.

One day, we will either give Israel the green light to attack or we wont be able to stop them, and Israel is going to pound them back to one celled organisms

Comment by Karen2 (K2)

Adam, as always - great pics.

Comment by Avi

Derek,

the gaza rockets stuff been going on for 10 years already and has only now gotten attention… A majority of the Israeli public wants a major ground offensive but its not happening…. what is happening is just in and out operations….

lets see what happens next…. this unfortunate death could be the final reason for a full incursion….

dont forget:

an Israeli solider Gilad Shalit was kidnapped 2 years ago or so while guarding the border in a Hamas cross border attack….

Comment by John

Avi…….who’s supplying Hamas (Palestinians) with the rockets? That’s who needs to be pounded into submission first. Otherwise Israel is just ’spinning their wheels’ with these overnight incursions……..their creating a lot of noise, but going no-where.

Comment by KT

Did Adam take these pictures himself? They belong on postcards. Absolutely perfect!

Comment by KT

John…eeerrr Syria?

Comment by Retread

Avi,

Israeli polititians need to give the IDF a green light and then get out of the way. But my hunch is that if Israel lets things boil for a while in Gaza the Palestinian people will tire of the Hamas thugs running everything - I’ don’t believe that the avg palestinian has any kind feelings towards Israel but I think that if the people get tired of Hamas using the Palestinian children as cannon fodder they will rise up and it will be easy for the IDF to clean Hamas out of Gaza and with luck wipe the sob’s of the face of the planet. Kind of like what is going on in Iraq.

Comment by John

KT……..your probably right. Unfortunately countries like Syria, Iran even Lebanon and Egypt in years past, have always “used” the Palastinians to fight their battles against Israel. They are as much to blame, if not more so, than the terrorist organizations like Hamas or Hezbolah, or who ever they have “employed” to do their dirty work, while they hide behind old worthless peace treaties signed decades ago.

Comment by Retread

KT (still a cool name)

Syria, Iran, Russia, weapons dealers in general and possible N Korea. Hamas is well trained and well lead and thus are not foolish enough to have only one supplier. But John is right the suppliers need to bleed, its not possible for Israel to destroy all of the nation/states that are hostile towards the Jewish nation…but if Israel with the military help of the US and maybe the Brits hit the key supply points (repeatedly) with a scorched earth policy of all current and new points the enemy might rethink their desire to support Hamas.

The international community would throw a fit but behind closed doors many would quitely thank Israel and any who helped.

Remember Israel taking out Iraq’s Nuke reactor? Publically the world howled but behind closed doors and with 20/20 hind sight the world has thanked Israel fot its bold DEFENSIVE action.

John,

all of their stuff is smuggled in from Egypt( they dont help them) by underground tunnels… then you got Iran, Hezbollah, and those people…

the place where the stuff is smuggled in egypt is known as the Philadelphia corridor….. Israel used to control it but since it withdrew from gaza egypt took over…..

Bibi Natanyu- oppositon leader wants to go in

Ehud Barak DOD- Talks alot but nothing big happens…

below is what you always here and then jets bomb somthing and yah …. im pretty sure we wont see a massive response…. the PM is over in JAPAN ….

oo and a massive military ops in gaza ha to go thru the Cabinet… which is a whole other story…

The army wants to go in but the politcians hold them up….

Olmert, Barak discussing Israeli response to rockets

Published: 02.27.08, 18:15 / Israel News

Sources within Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s entourage in Japan told Ynet on Wednesday that the prime minister is being kept abreast of the situation in southern Israel by Defense Minister Ehud Barak.

A senior source within the entourage said that the two were discussing Israel’s reaction to the rocket barrages emanating from Gaza and further said that Olmert views the matter with the utmost severity. “Israel will know how to respond and get to the terrorists responsible for the murder of innocent Israeli civilians, be they those carrying out the attacks or those directing the attacks,” said the source. (Roni Sofer, Tokyo)

Comment by KT

John, I hadn’t looked at it that way before. I see what you’re saying about hiding behind the peace treaties and still orchestrating attacks.

Retread (Thumbs up on the cool name) - That would solve the major problem though. Hit the suppliers, then go one level lower and so on. All in ine shot. Would take years for them to replenish and would buy time. Too bad that couldn’t get authorized, Syria, Russa, N. Korea… all at once and be done with it.

Comment by KT

Avi, you’re making me nervous with Egypt. My brother wants to take us there to see the pyramids. I will be a nervous wreck looking over my shoulder the entire time hahahaha

Comment by Kathy in Texas

Okay I am guessing on is Turkey and the other is Isreal. The others I will slowly figure out.

Comment by John

Avi……..sounds like the Egyptian’s policy of “not helping” smuggle in weaponry is similar to the Mexican’s claim ‘not helping’ with the smuggling of drugs and humans in this country.

‘morning Adam, your pictures are brilliant, as usual ;-) Thanks for sharing more of them!!!
It’s always a high point of the day to see another side of the world so far from KS.

KT,

EGYPT is safe…. and a good country……

Comment by Karen2 (K2)

Avi,
Is Gilad Shalit still being held captive?

How about the soldiers kidnapped by Hezbollah just prior to the war in Lebanon? Have they been returned?

There is truth to what Retread says. The Palestinians need to tire of of Hamas. But, it will be hard. Much like Hezbollah, Hamas is responsible for all the social programs in Gaza. It funds schools, orphanages, mosques, healthcare clinics, soup kitchens, and sports leagues. But, their popularity has been declining.

Hamas has a $70 million annual budget. More funding comes in the form of donations - from an article on Hamas - “Historically, much of Hamas’s funding came from Palestinian expatriates and private donors in Saudi Arabia and other oil-rich Persian Gulf states. Iran also provides significant support, which some diplomats say could amount to $20 million to $30 million per year.”

the two guys kidnapped by Hezbollah POWs

so is Shalit

i hope israel will get them back

they will have to exchange prisoners

Comment by Karen2 (K2)

Avi - sad to hear they will have to exchange prisoners….just makes Hamas continue on that path of kidnapping people in order to get what they desire.

I do hope Israel’s soldiers are returned home soon. I recall seeing Shalit’s father on the news. He was broken-hearted. So sad.

Olmert: No one in Hamas will be immune against war we wage
By Barak Ravid, Haaretz Correspondent and News Agencies
Tags: Sderot, Qassam rocket, Hamas

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Wednesday said that a war was being waged in southern Israel and the Gaza Strip, and vowed that “no one in Hamas, not the low-level officials nor the highest echelon, will be immune against this war.”

The prime minister was speaking in Japan shortly after 30 Qassam rockets launched from the Gaza Strip slammed into southern Israel and killed a 30-year-old college student outside Sapir College on the outskirts of Sderot.

Sources in the prime minister’s entourage said that Olmert was receiving constant updates on the situation in southern Israel and Gaza from his military attache. The prime minister was told that Hamas had taken responsibility for the deadly barrage, and that it is believed that the strike was a response to the deaths of 5 Hamas members in a Wednesday morning Israel Air Force strike on the Strip.

However, the prime minister said that “I don’t recall even once speaking about a large-scale ground operation in the Strip.”

David Baker, an official in the Prime Minister’s Office, said in an official response to the Qassam attack that “Israel will take the appropriate measures to bring these murderous rocket attacks to an end.”

“Those attacking Israel will realize that they are facing an Israel that is determined to defend its citizens, and we will use all the means at our disposal at any and every opportunity,” he said.

Sderot Mayor Eli Moyal told Army Radio that “we knew this was coming. It’s a shame that it happened. This is a difficult day.”

U.K. Foreign Office Minister Kim Howells issued a response Wednesday following the deadly attack saying “we unreservedly condemn the barrage of rockets on southern Israel that has left one man dead and several others injured. I offer my deepest sympathies to the family.”

“There can be no justification for the almost daily rocket and mortar attacks on Sderot and the surrounding area. We call on all Palestinian factions to stop attacks, including rocket strikes, against innocent civilians. I hope that Israel will show restraint in the face of these attacks,” he added.

“The U.K. offers its full support to the Israeli and Palestinian leaders who reiterated their commitment to the peace process at Annapolis and in negotiations held since. Israel and the Palestinian Authority, with the full support of the international community, must find a way to restore calm for the sake of the civilian populations on both sides,” he concluded.

David Barnan, the head of the Sapir College students’ association, said he ran to the scene of the explosion and was shocked. “I can’t put it into words,” he told Army Radio. Barnan demanded that the government carry out its pledges to reinforce buildings at the college, but he remained defiant.

“This is our country,” he said. “We will stay alive, we continue our studies, we will continue to do all the things we need to do, and speaking for myself, I can say we’re not afraid of anyone.”

Nati Messing, a third year student at Sapir College, said that the campus had turned into a firing range. “We heard the ‘red color’ [alert] sirens several times during the course of the day and went into the ‘protected space’ but there was one serious boom and it turns out that a Qassam struck in the parking lot some 50 meters from the building we were in.”

Messing added that students from the first aid unit rushed to the scene of the strike and administered first aid to the victim, “but then we heard that it was too late,” Messing said.

Asked whether students were planning to leave the college, Messing responded with a resounding “no.”

“It was a difficult day,” he said, “but the students aren’t rushing to leave. We had some difficult days last year too. We are on the war front. Sderot has been abandoned by the government, but we will not abandon it.”

Avi,

it is my opinion that there are two choices that Israel faces- niether pleasent-the first is a unilateral massive ground attack into Gaza with the singular purpose of the total defeat of Hamas, or wait until the people of Gaza tire of the slaughter that Hamas brings to Gaza.

Negotiations (business or war) are held from a position of strength. Currently the terror factions of Gaza and the Mid-east in general do not see Israel or the United States dealing from strength but rather from political weakness and economic fear (the loss of oil to the western nations).

It will be interesting in the next few years to see if Israel and the West can find strong and determined leaders that will be able to bring victory in the war on terror

Avi……..thanks for your updates from Israel. I, and others here I’m sure, much appreciate them. Our U.S medias (Fox, excluded of course……cough, cough) are a little too pre-occupied with disecting every word the presidential candidates are uttering these days and, IMO, are not keeping us up to speed with the other important news items……….or, at best, are shuffling them in between stories of why candidates cry or wear turbins.
I think Adam should inquire, on your behalf, about getting you some pay for all this freelance reporting……….or at least have Bill O’ send you one of his bloviated hats……or something………..be safe, and keep us informed

hahaha john….. i cant even believe what it feels like for the people….. i just read the wires… I’m hoping our school takes us there …. i inquired about it with our homeroom teacher but that idea died….

It probably wouldnt be a good idea to head down there either becuase if a rocket comes down and you only got 15 secs to get sheleter ……. so if you got dozens of kids you got a very not safe situation….

oo and John we found out today we have a day trip march 26 to the North …. and thats two days after those fourty days are over ( if you remember from yesterday) ….. soo that shall be a fun trip but i dunno where up north lol…

Great pictures..I like to zoom in on them.

The young boy in Israel? -It looks like ancient times. But it’s 21st century. I see the air conditioner and litter on the steps.
The Vietnam Memorial Wall- a letter to Grandpa from Sarah. And William R Corcoran- a marine age 20 from Hollywood Florida (i searched his name) Heroes from another time, remembered.
