In the Region

UPDATE

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez now threatens economic turmoil in the region and has convinced his pal, Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega to cut off all diplomatic ties with Colombia. This comes as Sec. State Condoleezza Rice showed strong support of our Colombian ally and U.S. Rep. from Florida Connie Mack says he’ll ask President Bush to designate Venezuela a state sponsor of terrorism. In an interview with me this afternoon, Mack said,

“The more desperate he comes, the more dangerous he becomes, the more dangerous the region becomes and that’s why we need to continue to spread the good will of the US so we can gain more allies and isolate those leaders who have turned to dictatorship.”

After 24 hours of travel we are in the region and will begin our reports in the morning. All over the Latin American media the headline is of the threat of war. However, one Colombian paper had the headline…Brian Adams to perform here. Apparently the 80’s & 90’s music star will headline in April…for what it’s worth.

Meantime, here are a few points of information that we’re hearing. First, the Organization of American States declared Colombia’s weekend raid of a guerrilla camp in Ecuador to be a violation of Ecuador’s sovereignty. Apparently, the OAS resolution was a compromise worked out between Ecuador and Colombia.

Also, while President Chavez preaches peace tonight at a rally in Caracas, he said that a conflict with the government of United Sates is “inevitable”. “A confrontation is inevitable because while we want freedom, they want to keep us chained. We want lights of hope and realizations for our peoples and they are committed to keep us in the dark. We want motherlands, they want colonies”, said Chavez. He also termed the U.S. and Colombian joint success as colonist and that he had spoken with his French counterpart Nicholas Sarkozy about the diplomatic conflict with Colombia and his dedication to pece.

Maybe the protest by Pelosi shows the awarding of the refueling tanker project to EADS was a good idea……

Perhaps Boeing should not have been trying to rip-off the American public by artificially inflating the cost of the project.

Perhaps the fact the EADS plane can carry more fuel and more people, at a lower cost should be considered a good use of our tax dollars. The fact this project will create jobs in the USA – estimated at 25,000 is good. The fact the UNION (associasted with Boeing wokers) is upset is another good thing – but they were upsent at Boeing OUTSOURCING work to countries / workers outside the USA (and some are in China).

http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/beab3936-ebe8-11dc-9493-0000779fd2ac.html

The air force originally chose Boeing to supply it with 100 tankers. But Congress cancelled the deal after it emerged that Darleen Druyun, a former top air force acquisitions official, had held illegal job discussions with Boeing while still negotiating the deal. Ms Druyun admitted boosting the value of the deal to help Boeing.

Marie–

No- this is the first I heard Interpol et al are being asked to examine the computers– smart move! cover your ass!

Comment by Marie

I don’t know if Adam mentioned this, but Colombia has asked Interpol and other international agencies to examine the computers and report, to allay any fears or musing (actually accusations) that they have been tampered with.

There are reports of night flights from Barcelona towards Amazonas State.

Adam–
You are one busy guy today–another live report with Shep tonight. Stay on that hilltop above the city – good reception there – good view too.
So, are you invited to the big meeting?

Comment by Terri ~ Las Vegas

The Air Force decision to give a major defense contract to a European company has sparked some outrage on Capitol Hill, but not nearly enough.

Tell Congress how outraged you are that the U.S. Air Force is choosing to ship American jobs overseas.

I DID.

“airport in Manta, Ecuador”. Interesting that Correa offered it to the Chinese in December. That was one of the points in the FARC memo from February recovered from Reyes’ computer – Correa offering not to renew the US lease to that airport as part of his good relations with the FARC.

Adam–

Have you been reading all the posts here when you did your coverage I just saw? I see there is a bit of Karen 2’s Congressman Connie Mack she brought up this morning– Patty’s and my reference to Nicaragua- Marie’s theory as to what Chavez is doing- and LDG’s thoughts too-

I see you are in Bogotá, Colombia– saludos to my old home–I can now add another country on to your list! How do you like Bogotá? Please don’t forget the pictures– I want to see what Bogotá is like presently– thanks!

I really liked your coverage I just saw– you had much more to say in this one than this morning on Fox and Friends-

and we have been busy here too– as you probably noticed! (preceding thread)

Terri – thanks for the petition link – signed just now.

From the article posted abovve– Correa is not renewing the lease to the US but offering it to China instead– hmm? What does this tell me?

Comment by Susan-AZ

I was just skimming through Ecuador and I just saw this dated December, 2007- which is not too remote from the past-

Ecuador’s president has offered the Chinese government an airbase currently serving as one of the last U.S. military outposts in South America.

Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa said during his recent visit to China that he would offer Beijing a lease on the Manta Airport, the presidential website reported last week.
Currently, Manta is used by U.S. military forces for operations. The contract is up in 2009 and Correa will not renew it, a transport and public works ministry communications official told BNamericas.

Correa said access to the air base is part of a plan for Manta to become a “doorway” for China’s entry to Latin America.

Air base operations are limited to one building, but it shares the runway with the city’s Eloy Alfaro international airport terminal.

Terminales del Ecuador, a subsidiary of Hong Kong-based Hutchison Port Holdings, is already operating Manta’s port. Government officials have already spoken of additional Chinese investment for such projects as a rail system. Hutchison has close ties to communist leaders in Beijing and also operates ports at both ends of the Panama Canal.

Eight people were reported to be killed and approximately 35 wounded in a terror attack at a seminary located near the entrance to Jerusalem on Thursday evening.

Rescue workers evacuate wounded from the scene of Thursday’s terror attack in Merkaz Harav Yeshiva in Jerusalem.

The exact number of people killed was yet to be confirmed, but Magen David Adom have confirmed 10 wounded civilians including three seriously. One terrorist was said to be dead.

Witnesses said that only one terrorist had entered the building and that he managed to fire 500-600 bullets over the course of 10 minutes before he was killed.

Although witnesses claimed only a single terrorist carried out the attack, police were searching the building for an additional terrorist, preventing the entrance of rescue workers.

The incident occurred when at least one terrorist entered the Merkaz Harav Yeshiva in the neighborhood of Kiryat Moshe carrying weapons. The terrorist was not wearing a suicide-bomb belt as earlier reported.

The gunman entered a dining hall where about 80 people were gathered, witnesses said, and opened fire. “There are at least seven killed and 10 people wounded,” said Eli Dein, director of Israel’s rescue service.

Approximately 50 ambulances were sent to the scene and a 16-year-old boy in serious condition and suffering from chest wounds was seen being evacuated from the scene.

Jerusalem Mayor Uri Lupolianski told Channel 2, “It’s very sad tonight in Jerusalem – many people were killed in the heart of Jerusalem.”

In Gaza City, residents went out into the streets and fired rifles in celebration in the air after hearing news of the attack on the seminary.

No terror group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The public can call the Merkaz Harav Yeshiva’s emergency hotline: 026524793.

The tragic joke of the past fifty years is trying to make peace with a bunch of savages

The worst part for me is President Bush will urge that Israel restrain its response when from experiance he should shut up and allow Israel to defend itself.

I believe that the Venezualians are more than capable of revitalizing their nation…it is in their God given nature to be free of despots, that is why IMO most dictators sooner or later get around to attacking or subverting religious institutions.

The question is time or when will they tire of Chavez and anybody else that would stripe them of their freedoms. When they tire, when they are angry enough, they will remove the stench of Chavez from their nostriles.

One thing we should note here. Hugo is putting a near unbearable strain on Venezuala’s economy now that he has mobilized his army that is going to put an even larger burden on the economy. This could be the begining of the end of his office. My only question is, when Chavez is gone will Venezuala’s people accept another castro wannabe?

LDG: What education?

Comment by Marie

Retread: I too think it would not be the best. This is a problem that needs to be solved by Venezuelans and believe me they are trying. Their idiosyncracy is getting in the way, but I still think that in one way or another they will do it, or else the momentum of events themselves will do it for them.

Comment by Retread

Marie

While I am sure many would like to see the Marines involved (myself included) I honestly believe that solution would only add to the problems being faced by the people of Venezuala. My beloved Corps is great for breaking things but we are not to apt at putting it back together, also the Libs in the US would have heart attacks and die on the spot…what a minute maybe sending the Corps in has more merits than I originally thought.

Chavez and Correa appear to be deflecting…… too much information in ‘Reyes computer / documents found that indicate they were supporting FARC.

US Senator on Fox this morning wants Venezuela labeled as a State Sponsor of Terror.

Chavez makes noise and it diverts his citizens attention away from him.
