In the Region
UPDATE
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez now threatens economic turmoil in the region and has convinced his pal, Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega to cut off all diplomatic ties with Colombia. This comes as Sec. State Condoleezza Rice showed strong support of our Colombian ally and U.S. Rep. from Florida Connie Mack says he’ll ask President Bush to designate Venezuela a state sponsor of terrorism. In an interview with me this afternoon, Mack said,
“The more desperate he comes, the more dangerous he becomes, the more dangerous the region becomes and that’s why we need to continue to spread the good will of the US so we can gain more allies and isolate those leaders who have turned to dictatorship.”
After 24 hours of travel we are in the region and will begin our reports in the morning. All over the Latin American media the headline is of the threat of war. However, one Colombian paper had the headline…Brian Adams to perform here. Apparently the 80’s & 90’s music star will headline in April…for what it’s worth.
Meantime, here are a few points of information that we’re hearing. First, the Organization of American States declared Colombia’s weekend raid of a guerrilla camp in Ecuador to be a violation of Ecuador’s sovereignty. Apparently, the OAS resolution was a compromise worked out between Ecuador and Colombia.
Also, while President Chavez preaches peace tonight at a rally in Caracas, he said that a conflict with the government of United Sates is “inevitable”. “A confrontation is inevitable because while we want freedom, they want to keep us chained. We want lights of hope and realizations for our peoples and they are committed to keep us in the dark. We want motherlands, they want colonies”, said Chavez. He also termed the U.S. and Colombian joint success as colonist and that he had spoken with his French counterpart Nicholas Sarkozy about the diplomatic conflict with Colombia and his dedication to pece.

As you can see Adam in the preceding post, we have been very busy–
And nice to know you are safe- In Colombia?
what is with this bit about colonies?
country ruled by another: a country or area that is ruled by another country-
Maybe Chavez has this backwards?
You have two great reporters- LDG and Marie, by the way– Marie sure has dug up some great info– you have to read her post about Chavez buying all these staple foods– and her observations—–
Marie’s post is at 11:34- March 5th- preceding thread
If you are still there in April, you can always go see Brian Adams-
Maybe send a few of us airfare so we can all go together-
Sounds like Chavez is taunting America. Does he really think that we’re going to whip out the bombs without good reason? He’s just trying to put fear into Venezuelans by starting rumors.
And there wasn’t an attack on Ecuador, they went after the guerillas.
What? What exactly is Chavez saying? Strange.
Waiting to see you Adam on F&F.
@FL Sunshine
Marie had a post here yesterday about Chavez and Correa giving a press conference in Venezuela. The usual story from Chavez.
***
also monitoring F&F feed, but on about 5 minutes delay (TiVo)
Adam…………never mind Chavez………How much are the Brian Adams tickets going for???????
OK………here’s our chance to rid ourselves of Chavez once and for all……. “Rumor” this around long enough until it becomes “fact”:
The bombing of a military recruiting office in NY’s Times Square is being linked to right winged leftists of Venezuala’s Chavista movement. Sources are saying…….blah, blah, blah ( you know how to fill in the rest )……
End result: Bye ,bye Hugo……
John, great idea. I’ll be sitting in the tire store today waiting on my car and the dentist office. That’s a great place to start. lol
Not sure if its an IED?
Soldier killed in strike on IDF jeep near Gaza border
By Amos Harel and Mijal Grinberg, Haaretz Correspondents and News Agencies
Tags: IDF, Sderot, Gaza, Hamas
An Israel Defense Forces soldier was killed and another seriously wounded when Palestinian militants blew up an IDF jeep patrolling the Gaza Strip border early Thursday.
Also on Thursday, militants in Gaza fired at least seven Qassam rockets and four mortar shells at Israel. One of the rockets scored a direct hit on a house in Sderot. There were no reports of injuries.
The soldiers’ jeep blew up when it rolled over an explosively formed penetrator next to Kibbutz Ein Hashlosha, on the Israeli side of the border. The explosives were apparently activated from Palestinian territory.
The slain soldier was sitting in the passenger seat of the jeep at the time of the attack, while the driver was seriously hurt.
Two other soldiers, who were sitting in the backseat of the jeep, sustained minor wounds.
Several other army vehicles, along with an army helicopter, arrived to rescue the wounded, but also came under fire, witnesses said.
The casualties were taken to the Soroka Medical Center in Be’er Sheva for treatment. Their families have been notified of the attack.
A witness said the jeep appeared to have been destroyed by the explosion at the Kissufim border crossing in central Gaza, and two tanks and an ambulance rushed to the scene.
“I believe the jeep was destroyed, because it was consumed by flames,” the witness, a local Palestinian, told Reuters.
The IDF military confirmed that a soldier was killed and three others hurt in the attack.
Senior IDF officers held an emergency meeting to plan their response to the cross-border strike, officials said following the attack.
A spokesman for the Islamic Jihad militant group claimed responsibility for the attack and the ruling Hamas group said it also participated.
“A group of fighters planted a bomb under the cover of darkness and waited for the jeep to arrive … [then] two fighters detonated the explosives,” said Abu Ahmed, an Islamic Jihad spokesman.
He said the attack was revenge for an IAF strike a day earlier that killed one of the group’s commanders in southern Gaza.
“We are sending our message to all the Zionist criminals,” he said. “Your threats to target the leaders of resistance … won’t scare us. We are going to continue our resistance and holy war, and we will continue to rain rockets on your colonies until we make them ghost towns.”
Also on Thursday, the Israel Air Force killed one militant in an on attack on a rocket-launching site in the northern Gaza Strip, Palestinian medical officials said.
IDF forces withdrew from north Gaza on Monday after a sweep against Palestinian rocket crews that killed more than 125 people – half of them civilians, according to medical officials. Fighting has persisted sporadically since.
Israel has pledged to keep up the pressure on militants to halt the continuous rocket fire on the Negev.
Qassam hits Sderot house, 6 more rockets and 4 shells strike Negev
A Palestinian rocket fired from the Gaza Strip slammed into a house in southern Israel on Thursday, and rescue crews were rushing to the scene, Israeli police said.
Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip on Thursday fired six more Qassam rockets and four mortar shells toward the western Negev.
The Qassam struck open fields near the city of Sderot and one of the shell hit an agricultural field in Kibbutz Ein Hashlosha, the site where an Ecuadorian volunteer was killed about two months ago.
There were no injuries or damages reported in any of the incidents.
Workers at Ein Hashlosha left their fields at the time of the attack.
Also on Thursday, Hamas Radio reported that its militants opened fire on an Israel Air Force planes. No comment was available from the Israel Defense Forces.
Meanwhile, the Defense Ministry on Wednesday finished erecting 120 fortified concrete bus shelters throughout Sderot, to serve as erstwhile shelters against rocket fire.
Some of the shelters can accommodate people who use wheelchairs.
In Ashkelon, tension remained high in anticipation of additional katyusha barrages. An alarm went off mistakenly at 2 P.M. in one neighborhood, sowing wide-spread panic and flooding police and municipal hotlines with calls.
Politicians continued to visit the city Wednesday. Health Minister Jacob Ben-Yizri toured the sites where katyushas hit, and met with Magen David Adom officials in Ashkelon.
John is always cracking me up!
Anyhoo… be safe….
My ex husband (the ex Dodger minor league player) played winter ball in Venezuela.
Ahh… I see you now on F&F! Very handsome.
Off subject, but this could save you paying higher taxes when the Dems take control of the White House. Ask your boss for a pay DECREASE…….you read it right, ask your boss to pay you less. The less you get paid, the less tax dollars you’ll owe the IRS.
This is actually not a novel idea……….many US corporations are already practicing this……as some of you may well know.
Glad to see Adam this morning. looks like he’s in a relatively safe area.
Bravo, Adam Housley. Short segment but well done. Good footage edited in there of main battle tanks on transporter trucks. *Question: Were those grabbed off Venezuelan TV recently, a current report (from somewhere), or file footage?
Hey Adam
I saw your report too. Must be cloudy there..not the greatest video feed or whatever you call it.
You may be happy to know that you were the opening act for Michael McDonald..
he’s on F&F now. Be safe.
All this makes me nervous;I’m keeping my gas tank on full.
John,
Thanks for the tax tip, I guess since I’m my own boss, I’ll take the day off. lol
Hey, my parents can top that one. They own their own business (as I mentioned before) but with sales being so low…they have taken themselves off the payroll. How’s that for lowering your pay? NO PAY!
Hi everyone. Hope all are well.
That footage of tanks is recent. It appeared on TV and in on-line media in Venezuela.
I didn’t catch F&F. Can anyone bring me up-to-date before I have to get back to work? Ah, to be independently wealthy!!
sorry… should read—I would imagine that the footage…

House Democrats made history!
12:30 A.M. – Democrats on the House Budget Committee made history today. Here’s just a sampling of what they achieved:
• Passed the largest tax increase in American history;
• Raised federal spending by hundreds of billions of dollars to grow government programs;
• Refused to stop earmarks and begin real reform;
• Raised taxes on children by slashing the $1,000 per child tax credit in half; and
• Refused to rein in entitlement spending in order to save Medicare for future generations.
Yes, it was an historic day, but unfortunately America’s workers and middle-income families will be footing the bill for all of this in the form of massive tax hikes, exploding deficits and overburdened entitlement programs.
Every single Republican voted NO on the Democrats’ fiscally irresponsible budget; every Democrat voted YES.
Terri……..Geez, when these idiots finally do something………they do the wrong thing.
CARACAS (Reuters) – Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said a serious diplomatic crisis with Colombia will mean reduced trade between the two countries and he will consider government takeovers of Colombian companies in Venezuela.
Venezuela will seek goods from other countries to replace products it gets in its $6 billion annual commercial exchange with Colombia, Chavez said.
“We’re going to make a map, ministers, of the Colombian businesses here in Venezuela. We could nationalize some, take them over, we aren’t interested in Colombian investments here,” Chavez said at a joint news conference in Caracas with Ecuador President Rafael Correa.
Chavez made similar threats against Spanish companies in a diplomatic confrontation with that country last year, but the reprisals never materialized.
OPEC nations and leftist allies Venezuela and Ecuador have teamed up in heavy criticism of U.S. ally Colombia this week after Colombian troops broke international law over the weekend crossing the border into Ecuador to kill more than 20 Colombian Marxist guerrillas.
Colombia, backed by the United States but condemned by most Latin American leaders, accuses Ecuador and Venezuela of harbouring the FARC rebels.
Venezuela and Ecuador have sent troops to their borders with Colombia and cut off diplomatic ties.
Chavez also said that Venezuelan investments in Colombia could be sold off.
Trade between Colombia and Venezuela was limited to bare necessities on Wednesday with Venezuela allowing in only perishable goods.
@Marie
It was a brief segment from a location in the field. It had some graphics of the map, showing basic relationships between the countries; some edited-in footage of Venezuelan military equipment; and our good host’s commentary roughly summing up what we have been tracking here regarding the OAS resolution, Chavez/Correa press conference, and so on. Likely it was intended (@AH:correct me if I mistake, please) to be either a teaser type of report to lead in more later on the main news broadcasts or was planned before things seemed to have gotten quieter in-region. Quiet maybe good, but it makes for rather little new news to report, yes?
The only reason Chavez thinks he has a backbone now is because Ecuador is backing him up-
Seems to me if Colombia just ceases trade with Venezuala of the perishable goods they’ll force Chavez to change his ways. Where else is he going to get food for his people?………From his ‘friends’ in Ecuador, Cuba or Iran?…….I think not.
LDG-
Yes- I saw our host too- He was on here at 5:30 so I was able to catch him- And actually, on my side of town, no one seems to even know about this conflict- Sad but true-
LDG: Thanks… Little to report other than bickering, except for the FARC blowing up a pipeline at Km 54, near Reyes’ camp this morning. Some concern because of the nearby river.
I see Kristina is in town and is meeting right now with Ingrid’s mother and Piedad Cordoba. Expect some inanity and further condemnation of Colombia. Rumor has it that the senator has been given Venezuelan citizenship, ostensibly to protect her from any action by Colombia for “treason.”
Also, as a footnote: Chávez gave Argentina a loan of some$150 million. They have thanked him by selling milk to Venezuela at roughly $400 more a metric ton than charged others. What wonderful friends.
Mornong everybody
I hope that the majority of Venezualians are smart enough to realize that IF the US wanted to “colonize” Venezuala then we would-we have the power. But we the American People have no desire to do so and WE would never allow any administration to do so, unless of course we found a lot of oil and Haliburton wanted to get involved and WalMart could increase its evil profit margin at the expense of the avg citizen in Venezuala and finally if we had an evil president that would lie so people could die in a useless war.
Chavez is a real idiot and I’m hopeful that the people of Venezuala grow tired of his missmanagement of their resources.
AAAH anyway remember my friends there will be wars and rumor of wars.
John-
Nicaragua and Argentina too- I saw the list Marie put up last night on a link of which Chavez has done some major food shopping- Looks like the meat is coming from Nicaragua and Argentina- but six billion dollars in annual commercial exchange is in my persepective a lot to be shrugging off! But then Chavez doesn’t give a chara if his people starve anyway- they have been for months- and there is an area in Venezuela where there are squatters everywhere since these are homeless- so it looks like he doesn’t even care about the homeless–
Oh, forgot to add that 4 of the 6 tourists captured in January by the FARC were released today. I guess their “exchange value” wasn’t all that great. That makes some 700 or more (no one really knows) still in FARC captivity.
@Susan-AZ
Good ‘morning’. Yes, well, if the folks in your area are not yet aware of this, then likely they will not learn much until the next event. One thing I was starkly reminded of watching F&F was that U.S. news cycle and content is not, how might I put this politely… not intended to cover international events. Not a criticism, just an observation. Compared to my “hometown” media here where I am, FoxNews is a paragon of cosmopolitan thought. ((grins))
Chavez doesn’t need to eat anyway- he has his coca paste- compliments of Bolivia=
Adam
why don’t we see reports on what is happening in Israel? Chavez can be easily taken care of with one good sniper team or if we choose the slow death we could use economic warfare, either way he would be marginalized and thus be no threat to his nation or his neighbors.
Israel on the other hand is out numbered by about a thousand to one and being the only free state in the region is being constantly attacked by people that will settle for nothing less but another Holocast.
Even FOX NEWS seems to ignore the threat to Israel…I’m just wondering.
LDG.. astute observation.
@Marie
“What wonderful friends.”
There is an old saying about “Talk is cheap, but…” and the Government of Argentina seems to believe that words of support for Chavez are ok to discount, but when it comes to frozen meat, milk, and other staples, business is business and when you (Chavez) are rich and in need of friends, business is good.
re: Pipeline hit. Ordinary activity. I seem to recall FARC hits some major infrastructure target about once a month.
re: Tourist release. Yes on the little exchange value. Look at who was kept and who was released. Political gain = released.
you too Susan
LDG-
Good evening to you there?
Since Fox N Friends comes on too early here, I don’t watch it- I was up at that hour so I caught Adam- Actually, not to praise Adam, but he seems to be one of the correspondants who seems to take a interest in Venezuela- If you go back to last year, he has been putting up threads about Chavez even when Chavez was quiet- if there is such a thing!
I guess maybe if I hadn’t lived in South America, I would not be so involved- but my brother does business in Ecuador and Bogota too so he flies there several times a year– We can’t seem to get away from our childhood-
I am more fortunate than Marie- she still has close friends in Venezuela and she lived there so she must be very worried or concerned-
I am going to assume again- You are in the Eastern Hemisphere?
Susan…….One way to defeat your enemy is to starve them of all basic essentials, food and water being on top of that list. It’s cruel ,I know, but it will force the people within Venezuala to make a move against their “leadership”……..and an internal conflict (overthrowing the government) is better than us getting directly involved with, as Hugo would put it, colonization………IMO
LDG………IMO, most of the US morning major media outlets are, as you put it “a paragon of cosmopolitan thought”. That’s why I get my “real” morning news from outside the mainstream medias……..PBS news outlets, BBC and even Univision give me far better information………….All, except for Adam’s fine reporting, of course.
@Retread

LDG–
You posted one of Avi’s favorite links-
Did you see that Avi? Avi lives in Israel-
@Susan-AZ
“Good evening to you there?”
Apparently, yes.
“…he seems to be one of the correspondants who seems to take a interest in Venezuela”
which might explain my wandering in here for this story, yes?
“I am going to assume again- You are in the Eastern Hemisphere?”
yes.
LDG – Retread
I agree with you about Fox’s coverage. They have superior reporters who could provide us with much more in depth reporting from around the world.
Mike Tobin in Israel
Greg Palkot, Amy Kellogg in Europe (and I know i am forgetting another Greg)
Adam who travels to South America.
I would like to see at least one of their news blocks of the day focus on world events.
For instance, in Adam’s report, it would have been nice to hear how all this ‘talk’ from Chavez was being perceived by the locals in Colombia. Has the border between the two countries been shut. If Colombia cannot sell their food to Venezuela, what effect does that have on Colombia?
Chemicals for explosives concealed in Palestinian food containers transiting open Israel-Gaza border crossings
March 5, 2008, 1:36 PM (GMT+02:00)
Israel reopened the border crossings Tuesday, March 3, for food and other essential supplies to reach the Gaza population. Wednesday, a load of cans marked “edible oil” was found to contain a chemical substance resembling glue for the manufacture of explosives used in Palestinian missiles fired against Israel. The trucks, like the 100 which crossed into Gaza Tuesday, originated in the West Bank.

“You posted one of Avi’s favorite links-”
Bravo Avi, then. We have crossed over here, but not spoken in any detail. Glad he thinks well of it. It is a superb source for that side of the story.
Chara-
now I need to go back into the other thread and see what Venezuela and Colombia trade off-
Avi is still in highschool and a very bright young man-
We have a Max here from the UK– where are you Max?
@Karen2
“For instance, in Adam’s report…”
Yes! That would have been a very good move. I suspect just such is our host (and the producer)’s plan for when they have more airtime.
ha, ha, Susan’s on a fishing trip
Pipeline hits were frequent; however, their frequency had decreased to the point that they were not reported, yet may have continued.
Argentina is not the only one doing markups. The list is long. Unfortunately the ones left holding the bag will be Venezuelans.
Retread: you cannot imagine how many would love to see the marines on their doorstep. There are others who feel this is a mess of their own making and they have to take care of it themselves. Then, there are the few (in control for the time being) who are feeding at the trough and want the status quo to remain, and then you have the bulk of the population, the poor only concerned with making ends meet. These are the ones that are suffering the most and being exploited.
Fox seems to be doing a lot of coverage on the candidates- I must have watched the Jack Nicholson video that one day at least twenty times- and then the next day it was played again-
As for me, I just wait to see what the voters vote on– I can’t change their votes-
Yes Marie-
I am headed off to the other thread– and all the good links are over there-
see you in a few-
“but it will force the people within Venezuala to make a move against their “leadership”……..”
that is what he is trying to stave off by making mass purchases.
The reason i believe fox doesnt cover all the rockets is becuase it happens everyday … today rockets smashed diretly into a home… as do they do every day …
I think that since it happens everyday and the news story barely changes they stay mum on it.
They do have a local here in Jereusalem and two reporters ……
So the tagline would be ” Rockets pound into Israel destroying a home with a few injuires ” and ” Israeli jets bomb launching sites.” day after day
like here for instance ( Israel) you just roll your eyes becuase its the same thing day after day but when somthing big happens like when rockets reach new distances then it starts to get attention …
Right now to sum up in a few words : its bang bang bang bang ….

The two nations have around $6 billion a year in trade, with Venezuela importing cars, beef and medicine from its neighbor. Colombia imports chemicals, iron and plastic from Venezuela.
Venezuela has also increasingly relied on imports from its neighbor to address shortages of staple foods such as milk and chicken.
HMM–
I would rather eat food than chemicals-
except Avi–
the chemicals concealed in the food seems a bit alarming to me– what else is being smuggled?
Avi -
Wow. So it has become ‘every day life’.
Do you and your friends discuss what you would like to see happen to stop the conflict?

Muslim states urge UN rights body to condemn Israel
Resolution supported by Organization of the Islamic Conference calls on UN Human Rights Council to condemn Israel’s ‘war crimes’ against Palestinian civilians in Gaza. Israeli ambassador says accusations should be directed at Hamas while US envoy slams the council’s ‘unbalanced and excessive focus on Israel’
News agencies Published: 03.06.08, 17:14 / Israel News
Muslim countries called on the top UN rights body Thursday to condemn Israel’s recent military strikes in Gaza.A proposal put forward by Pakistan labeled Israeli incursions into the Palestinian territory a ”war crime.”

The draft resolution, supported by the Organization of the Islamic Conference and sponsored by the League of Arab States, expressed its ‘’shock at the Israeli bombardment of Palestinian homes … and the … collective punishment against the civilian population, which constitute a war crime.”
It also called for Palestinian groups to stop firing rockets into Israel.
Israel’s ambassador, Itzhak Levanon, told the UN Human Rights Council at an urgent debate on Gaza Thursday that the accusations leveled against his country were ”exaggerations, distortions and inaccuracies.” He said the Palestinian faction Hamas, which controls the small coastal territory, were the ones who committed war crimes.
The Palestinian ambassador to the UN office in Geneva, Mohammad Abu-Koash, said the international community has failed to show a firm stance and halt the suffering of the population in the West Bank and Gaza.
The Palestinian people are ”left to a merciless occupier that doesn’t even hesitate to use F-16 (fighter planes) to pound homes and bury whole families under the debris under the pretext of self-defense,” he told the council.
EU calls for ‘more balanced’ resolution
The 47-member human rights council could vote on the resolution on Thursday or Friday. Since it was created two years ago, the council has passed three resolutions explicitly condemning Israel and several more indirectly criticizing it.
European countries said they were very concerned about the situation in Gaza, but asked for a more balanced resolution.
”This council should deplore the fact that innocent civilians on both sides are suffering,” said Slovenia’s ambassador, Andrej Logar, who was speaking on behalf of the European Union.
”We are deeply alarmed by the recent Israeli military operations,” he said, adding that Israel should show ”utmost restraint.”
He also said, ”We condemn the indiscriminate rocket attacks on Israel’s civilian areas. Palestinian factions in Gaza must stop these attacks.”
US Ambassador Warren W. Tichenor said tensions in the region should not be exacerbated by unhelpful rhetoric.
”The human rights council’s unbalanced and excessive focus on Israel does not help advance the cause of

peace,” Tichenor told the council. ”One more unbalanced resolution with problematic factual and legal assertions will only further obstruct the dialogue that does need to take place for peace to be obtained.”
The United States is not a member of the council.
The council, which lacks enforcement powers, has been accused of spending excessive amounts of time focusing on Israel since replacing the widely discredited and highly politicized Human Rights Commission in June 2006.
Just now: Argentinean reporters Fleiderman and Montes de Oca from C5N in Argentina, who are covering KK’s trip to Venezuela, were told by guards at Miraflores Palace that they would not be able to report until the protest outside ended. When they refused, the guards tried to grab their equipment. Chavez can only be portrayed in a good light.
Well, I just read it for the first time– so thanks–
Correa is in Panama- I have to email my friend in Panama and see what is going on-
Colombia obviously does not want this to be any bigger than what it is but Correa and Chavez just have to run around with their mouths flapping in the air–
I see the pipleline too was discussed– throwing rocks into a still pond-
At least the reporters didn’t get tear gassed as it happened to Adam awhile back-
@Marie
ouch. Hope they at least got a long-shot of the protest before they tried to go in for the interview. Bet those reporters probably shouldn’t ask about the briefcase of Chavez’s money that was key to the Miami case a few weeks back then, yes?
LDG: not criticizing. I have an advantage.. fluency in Spanish.

People were going to arrive with suitcases to protest Kirchner’s visit. A little bit of humor. Venezuelans are very quick to find humor in even the most difficult situations.
sorry … “is trying” Haste makes …
Chavez and Correa appear to be deflecting…… too much information in ‘Reyes computer / documents found that indicate they were supporting FARC.
US Senator on Fox this morning wants Venezuela labeled as a State Sponsor of Terror.
Chavez makes noise and it diverts his citizens attention away from him.
How do I restore my toolbox on my email? My delete and send buttons are gone-

While I am sure many would like to see the Marines involved (myself included) I honestly believe that solution would only add to the problems being faced by the people of Venezuala. My beloved Corps is great for breaking things but we are not to apt at putting it back together, also the Libs in the US would have heart attacks and die on the spot…what a minute maybe sending the Corps in has more merits than I originally thought.
Retread: I too think it would not be the best. This is a problem that needs to be solved by Venezuelans and believe me they are trying. Their idiosyncracy is getting in the way, but I still think that in one way or another they will do it, or else the momentum of events themselves will do it for them.
LDG: What education?
@Marie
“LDG: What education?”
I presume she was thanking you for informing her of recent events, and generally being education about life in present-day Venezuela.
edit: should have been : “…being educated…”
Susan…if you use internet explorer….right click where the buttons disappeared from…should have a option to turn them back on.
“morning everyone
John…as always, your witt starts my day with a smile and a giggle!
Avi…that is sad, that the blasts are no longer a “bother”. Shows how easy it is to be desensitized. No one should have to live like that
It would scare the bejeesers out of me!!
ooops susan
i mean outlook express!
regarding Susan’s post above (10:54 a.m.) about:
“Viktor Bout Allegedly Arrested in Bangkok Thailand”
The story is now out so I can comment. The specific charges of the arrest are FARC related, and the “Sting” to get him was run by the DEA.

connecting dots here (as Susan would say)
Sorry, my other remark was directed to you instead of Susan by mistake.
Patty–
I just fixed it– I did it manually– I wish I had seen your post- it would have been easier- I dragged the missing ones up to the tool bar- after I spend from my last post to now trying to figure it out- Now I am really departing- the email thing was freaking me out- LOL
LDG– YES- I presume she was thanking you for informing her of recent events, and generally being educated about life in present-day Venezuela.
AND THANKS for adding on to my headline–
Now (really departing)

@Marie
“…instead of Susan by mistake.”

I just had to read your link LDG–
Now Russia and the US are going to aruge who gets to keep Bout!
(really, really departing)
*L* Susan..i can’t read/type as fast as you!
Glad you got them back.
re: Susan’s (above)
“I just had to read your link LDG–”
wonderful! Now we can just hope our good host here gets time to read it as well. That *is* afterall the reason we post here (other than self amusement).
LDG…..
” self amusement “?
Isn’t that what the porn sites are for?
@John
perhaps there is a different defintion of “self amusement” that applies there…
((snort))
@Adam Housley (or staff)
One last place to look for analysis on where Venezuela is going with this is the subscriber-site Stratfor. You may well already be a subscriber there, if so there is a new analysis there on why Venezuela “…dare not turn this into a real fight.” Just FYI.

Well, hope we (all of us) have been of some help here, but it is time to do that sleep Susan wished me well for. Be well and safe, All.

Adam—
Just saw your latest live report- great and informative.
Much Better reception this time; looks like you found some higher ground to stand on.
going to the gas station and enjoy my day off now…..
Adam,
between the live desk and studio B in the last few weeks i havent seen Tobin or Rina….. =/
I believe that the Venezualians are more than capable of revitalizing their nation…it is in their God given nature to be free of despots, that is why IMO most dictators sooner or later get around to attacking or subverting religious institutions.
The question is time or when will they tire of Chavez and anybody else that would stripe them of their freedoms. When they tire, when they are angry enough, they will remove the stench of Chavez from their nostriles.
One thing we should note here. Hugo is putting a near unbearable strain on Venezuala’s economy now that he has mobilized his army that is going to put an even larger burden on the economy. This could be the begining of the end of his office. My only question is, when Chavez is gone will Venezuala’s people accept another castro wannabe?
Adam
Is Tobin prior service USMC?
I knew a Sgt. Tobin back in ‘83.
Retread,
I dont think hes that old

Two Palestinian terrorists entered the Mercaz Harav Yeshiva in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Kiryat Moshe on Thursday night and opened fire at students inside.
Eyewitnesses said that they saw four people dead, Channel 1 reported.
Magen David Adom has confirmed casualties but the number of wounded was unknown. MDA has confirmed that one of the terrorists was killed.
MDA described the incident as a “multi-casualty incident.”
Police were closing off the area.
THIS IS BIGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG ISRAEL BETTER DO SOMETHING BIG AND GET THOSE MOFOS

Is the Israeli govt gonna tell the world to kiss its a@@ and hunt the palestinians into gaza and finish this war once and for all?
Probably not
Be very careful
Hi Avi–
Jewish yes, I left that part out.
Good to see you– be safe my friend!
Avi
I remember when the bastards danced in the streets on 911
I am tired of playing nice.
I am tired of making civilized people live in fear, just so the left can blame us for the barbarians being savages
Its time for Israel and the West to adopt Gen Shermans tactics and make our enemies howl.
Israel will have to do somthing ……….. and it will have to be somthing big………….. GRRRRRRRRRRRRR
shooting still being heard…..
If the time lines are correct that only leaves less than 15 minutes between the incident and the dancing in the streets………..makes me think that the Palestinians knew this was coming.
Be safe Avi……..
Let me re-word that…….the ‘general population’ of Palestinians knew this was coming………’
Israel must respond with overwhelming force
The tragic joke of the past fifty years is trying to make peace with a bunch of savages
The worst part for me is President Bush will urge that Israel restrain its response when from experiance he should shut up and allow Israel to defend itself.
May God Bless Them ALL!!!!!
Adam Thank you for all you do & PLEASE stay safe!
Retread,
also note these are not your avg Israelis they are super religous ones ….. they will demand israel do somthing…. they dont play hooki…..

Eight people were reported to be killed and approximately 35 wounded in a terror attack at a seminary located near the entrance to Jerusalem on Thursday evening.

Rescue workers evacuate wounded from the scene of Thursday’s terror attack in Merkaz Harav Yeshiva in Jerusalem.

The exact number of people killed was yet to be confirmed, but Magen David Adom have confirmed 10 wounded civilians including three seriously. One terrorist was said to be dead.
Witnesses said that only one terrorist had entered the building and that he managed to fire 500-600 bullets over the course of 10 minutes before he was killed.
Although witnesses claimed only a single terrorist carried out the attack, police were searching the building for an additional terrorist, preventing the entrance of rescue workers.
The incident occurred when at least one terrorist entered the Merkaz Harav Yeshiva in the neighborhood of Kiryat Moshe carrying weapons. The terrorist was not wearing a suicide-bomb belt as earlier reported.
The gunman entered a dining hall where about 80 people were gathered, witnesses said, and opened fire. “There are at least seven killed and 10 people wounded,” said Eli Dein, director of Israel’s rescue service.
Approximately 50 ambulances were sent to the scene and a 16-year-old boy in serious condition and suffering from chest wounds was seen being evacuated from the scene.
Jerusalem Mayor Uri Lupolianski told Channel 2, “It’s very sad tonight in Jerusalem – many people were killed in the heart of Jerusalem.”
In Gaza City, residents went out into the streets and fired rifles in celebration in the air after hearing news of the attack on the seminary.
No terror group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The public can call the Merkaz Harav Yeshiva’s emergency hotline: 026524793.

Nicaragua is at it too with Colombia–
Horrible thing in Jerusaleum– those 10 students—–
How is Kathy in Texas? The freak snow storm there?
OOPS–
Patty, my darling, I see you have a Nicaragua link up too– Well, we have two links up now-
I just knew Nicaragua was going to pull something– Chavez’s compadre-
Isn’t that awful about the students? I guess the school was at the entrance or exit of Jerusaleum?
Terri-
I signed one too last night- I got an email from grassroots as thanks to you, I am now a member!
LOL
I was just skimming through Ecuador and I just saw this dated December, 2007- which is not too remote from the past-
Ecuador’s president has offered the Chinese government an airbase currently serving as one of the last U.S. military outposts in South America.

Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa said during his recent visit to China that he would offer Beijing a lease on the Manta Airport, the presidential website reported last week.
Currently, Manta is used by U.S. military forces for operations. The contract is up in 2009 and Correa will not renew it, a transport and public works ministry communications official told BNamericas.
Correa said access to the air base is part of a plan for Manta to become a “doorway” for China’s entry to Latin America.
Air base operations are limited to one building, but it shares the runway with the city’s Eloy Alfaro international airport terminal.
Terminales del Ecuador, a subsidiary of Hong Kong-based Hutchison Port Holdings, is already operating Manta’s port. Government officials have already spoken of additional Chinese investment for such projects as a rail system. Hutchison has close ties to communist leaders in Beijing and also operates ports at both ends of the Panama Canal.
From the article posted abovve– Correa is not renewing the lease to the US but offering it to China instead– hmm? What does this tell me?
You guys need to lighten the mood a little

Terri – thanks for the petition link – signed just now.
Adam–
Have you been reading all the posts here when you did your coverage I just saw? I see there is a bit of Karen 2’s Congressman Connie Mack she brought up this morning– Patty’s and my reference to Nicaragua- Marie’s theory as to what Chavez is doing- and LDG’s thoughts too-
I see you are in Bogotá, Colombia– saludos to my old home–I can now add another country on to your list! How do you like Bogotá? Please don’t forget the pictures– I want to see what Bogotá is like presently– thanks!
I really liked your coverage I just saw– you had much more to say in this one than this morning on Fox and Friends-
and we have been busy here too– as you probably noticed! (preceding thread)
“airport in Manta, Ecuador”. Interesting that Correa offered it to the Chinese in December. That was one of the points in the FARC memo from February recovered from Reyes’ computer – Correa offering not to renew the US lease to that airport as part of his good relations with the FARC.
Marie–
I knew you would connect the dots– I just knew it–
Fox is actually having a discussion about FARC and free trade on the All Star Panel- They are discussing to push the free trade as it has sat for over a year and a half-
Rod- I saw your grandmother joke– I had seen that awhile back when someone sent it to me- I should see what I have saved and send you a few for your humor of the day-
Yes, Susan. I just saw it. They’re right and Pelosi, Reid and the others are wrong.
The Air Force decision to give a major defense contract to a European company has sparked some outrage on Capitol Hill, but not nearly enough.
Tell Congress how outraged you are that the U.S. Air Force is choosing to ship American jobs overseas.
I DID.
http://www.house.gov/tiahrt/tanker_survey.htm
I did too. Thanks Terri
Terri-
Me three.
Adam–
You are one busy guy today–another live report with Shep tonight. Stay on that hilltop above the city – good reception there – good view too.
So, are you invited to the big meeting?
There are reports of night flights from Barcelona towards Amazonas State.
I don’t know if Adam mentioned this, but Colombia has asked Interpol and other international agencies to examine the computers and report, to allay any fears or musing (actually accusations) that they have been tampered with.
Marie–
No- this is the first I heard Interpol et al are being asked to examine the computers– smart move! cover your ass!
What is Barcelona going to do?
Maybe the protest by Pelosi shows the awarding of the refueling tanker project to EADS was a good idea……
Perhaps Boeing should not have been trying to rip-off the American public by artificially inflating the cost of the project.
Perhaps the fact the EADS plane can carry more fuel and more people, at a lower cost should be considered a good use of our tax dollars. The fact this project will create jobs in the USA – estimated at 25,000 is good. The fact the UNION (associasted with Boeing wokers) is upset is another good thing – but they were upsent at Boeing OUTSOURCING work to countries / workers outside the USA (and some are in China).
http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/beab3936-ebe8-11dc-9493-0000779fd2ac.html
The air force originally chose Boeing to supply it with 100 tankers. But Congress cancelled the deal after it emerged that Darleen Druyun, a former top air force acquisitions official, had held illegal job discussions with Boeing while still negotiating the deal. Ms Druyun admitted boosting the value of the deal to help Boeing.
