More Behind the Scenes from Colombia

Here is a look at a rally for peace through the streets of Bogota. People actually rallied across the countryside. Those we spoke with expressed concern about Colombia’s leftist neighbors. This rally was to protest the innocent people either murdered or abducted here, I am told more than 750 are still held captive including 3 American contractors and a former Colombian Presidential candidate. Some in this crowd were not so welcoming, there were some socialists and anarchists dressed in black who felt we were imperialists for covering the stories here, doesn’t make much sense to me.

Marie–

more new news to me–

Genaro might be one of those three dead guerillas– who killed ex- senator Jaime Lozado– the husband of Gloria– who was just freed last February after six years of captivity–

Sounds like FARC is having some difficult times at the moment and I am enjoying your humor- l

On your google site- translation– on the right hand side, there is an article of El Gordito being captured in Venezuela– LDG’S reference–

I just checked it out real quickly– will have to come back and read these–

thanks!

RCN radio has the story as a second source. Spanish only, though, sorry.

@Karen2

Thank you. That may have to be good enough for now. I could read the original (mostly), but I sure would like to see a second source pick up the story.

One more pass through the wires before I head out.

Heck, even my Pens game is over (Pens won it in the last seconds of regulation, yay)

Reuters has (in English, belatedly) the report of a Colombian narco-trafficker being arrested in Venezuela. Wonder why they are suddenly being cooperative, eh?

…but still nothing on Marie’s story.

Nothing on the english language wires *yet* on it, though.

Hi everyone:

Just dropped in for a second and am off and running again.

Although I hate to bring you back to South America as you are enjoying your “trip” to Japan, nonetheless there has been some news: three more FARC have turned up ready for their trip to Hades. They are being identified and it seems that one of them may well be the one who killed former Colombian congresswoman Gloria Polanco’s husband.

The link unfortunately is in Spanish:

For the moment: “Do pobachennia”.

If you go back a few months ago– Adam hasn’t even answered what the greatest news events were for 2007 and where does he stand–

It is a thread which has a question mark on it– So he needs to go back and start answering past threads before he even gets to Colombia– LOL

I love you Adam!!!

Sunshine - I really didn’t think we sent that cold air to you…… It feels like it is still up here!

We got all the way up to 12 degrees yesterday! maybe the 30’s this week…. Can you send some warm air?

Comment by LDG

@Karen2

“thank you. Your explanation is similar to my ‘gut’ reaction…”

most welcome. I confess my review was done mostly on ‘gut’ as well, as I have no easy-to-reach resources that could tell me more about the PRC officers quoted in the article to know for sure what faction and what might motivate their action. But that is what I would check into if I was to make a proper study of the event(s).

Comment by FL Sunshine

Adam - what ever happened to the “funny story” that occurred on your trip down to Columbia? Did I miss it?

Comment by FL Sunshine

LDG - I figure you were just being “mysterious” lol

Susan - thanks!

All - Who blew that nasty front down here? It was cold yesterday! brrrr And it started raining on Friday around 1pm at Daytona where I was working the motocross race. Yuck! What a nasty day! Poor fans! Did anyone see it on TV? So much mud on the track - I think some of the boys probably liked it. It rained off and on until early morning hours of Sat.

Comment by Jen S

Greetings All

Adam-
Do they have these rallies on a regular basis? Or was this planned specifically because of the recent events there?
I see the one fellow running down the street selling T-shirts….

Comment by Karen2 (K2)

LDG - thank you. Your explanation is similar to my ‘gut’ reaction to hearing the story on the news.

China wants to give the appearance of rooting out terrorists to show they are safe for the Olympics. But, the group sounded too small.

Did not know some had helped fight in Afghanistan…. nor did I realize how close they are to Pakistan and Afghanistan. A little geography lesson for me today.

Comment by LDG

@Alfredo

“This is one of the best stories”

It has a certain dramatic charm. At least one source has pointed out that the price noted in the FARC documents as a possible resale is so absurdly high that likely they thought they could buy *enriched* uranium and resell it -for profit- to someone who could use it in a major weapons program. The “they were making a dirty bomb” version of the story is contested.

Comment by LDG

@Avi

“theres word that a semi ceasefire has gone into …”

Here’s hoping for your continued safety.

@Avi and FL Sunshine

I shouldn’t be snide about it. I have some clients that hire me to analyse information for them, some who hire me to teach them how to present their research or reports in an International setting (e.g. in English), and some clients that pay for my research.

that a little more informative?

Hi Sunshine– we have lots of that too here!

(departed) LDG’s style!

Comment by LDG

@Karen2

Ok, got it. What you have there is a real event, exploited by the PRC authorities for their own purposes.

The Uighurs are a real oppressed minority in China’s far west, that really are only part of Chinese territory by conquest…

…but there have been a number of confirmed events all through Central Asia where Uighurs have gone into the various Islamic-motivated militant groups. Some fought in Afganistan, for example. There are reported cases of al-Qaeda members of that group…

…and the PRC government has used that fact to label *any* Uighur nationalist movement as “terrorists”.

My presumption, based on what is out there: is that there was a real hijacking, but likely not for the purposes the PRC authorities say it was; there was a real rebel cell with guns and plans, but not targeting something like the Olympics.

how’s that for an off-the-cuff look at it?

Comment by Susan-AZ

k2–

not a good time to be telling lies with the Olympics on the way– might scare a few people away and there goes the $$$$$$-

You know what I mean- I saw also there was just a handful of these– but one too many is one too many–

Wonder why they would come up with this? Maybe to show the world they are looking out for terrorists? And I totally see your point too– I hadn’t thought about it– and good point!!!

…the waterfall is to the far left side of the map on a branch of the river…

…the other site is a traditional village, thatched roof houses, like they built for farms and barns up to about 100 years ago.

@Susan-AZ

“I am here to learn– so what is affirmative in Japanese–”

the closest would be hai sou desu meaning roughly “yes it is” in English…

BUT

…there is *no* basic concept equal to a yes/no question in Japanese, so there is no direct equivalent to “yes”.

I would stick with “yes” and “yes?” here unless you have a whole lot of time and patience to learn the usage of hai in all its myriad applications.

Comment by Susan-AZ

the second picture–

it didn’t dawn on me to click on the blue– how so cool is this? I see those dolls– they look like they are real!

When we go off topic here– Adam calls it- digressing- :D
Over on your side of the world- Adam has been to Cambodia, Hong Kong, Thailand, Vietnam, China, South Korea-

I don’t see Japan– Adam needs to pay a visit there– so much technology and he loves gadgets- maybe he can do a story on Japan and technology-

By the way, I am his cartographer-

I am here to learn– so what is affirmative in Japanese– To much confusion with yes– but I can use Hai? when in doubt about something but I can yes the word for affirmative when I say yes-

Comment by Susan-AZ

For starters– when you open the link- the second picture– you click on that, and a structure comes up– when, where, how, and what?

Now when you click on the fourth picture– several like sketches coming up– click on the fourth sketch which looks like a boulder- what is this?

On the fifth sketch- which looks like a structure- click and two pictures come up– what are these or this?

((laughs))

There is a recent American Beer commercial for (?) Bud Light, with “Girls love the foreign accent” as a theme tha has a priceless moment of the obviously Japanese ESL student being told to “Say Hi!”

Comment by LDG

@Susan-AZ

If I inform you of something, and you wish to say a kind of yes, an affirmation, you use hai… no question mark.

If you don’t understand something I say, and would say “eh??” or “huh??” in English, you *can* use hai with a questioning tone… you could also just say “eh??”.

Like I tried to tell you yesterday: there is no direct equivalent to the English “yes” in Japanese. hai is as close as it gets, but not the same.

evening greetings: konban wa … the same kon as in the daytime greeting. You should use this at first encounter in the evening or night time.

Comment by Susan-AZ

Let me go back– I clicked on the pictures so I will have to go back and I will be right back–

Comment by Susan-AZ

LDG– There goes my whole yes lesson for yesterday– so if I want to say yes-just right it out as Hai- but no question mark at the end because then it changes the whole meaning?

but now I can use Hai with the question mark when I don’t get what you mean–

so let’s me get this right- Hai as is- means yes and Hai ? means I don’t get what you mean-

well you will probably being seeing me use Hai? meaning I don’t get what you mean a lot-
