Picture of the Day

With all the travel and stories, I haven’t had the opportunity to play our little game. So…here it is. The Picture of the Day. What is this, where and why was it being used. I know you are going to have some great guesses! Didn’t Greta copy this game? :)

The “ruffles” (short drumrolls) and the “flourishes” (a bugle call) are generally played four times

I am still learning over here— this will become a ghost town thread–

LOL

What i love about Picture of the Day is that it gets us learning about things we normally wouldn’t bother with, and often they are really interesting.

US Army Presidential Salute Battery
A speciality platoon of the 3rd US Infantry (The Old Guard), the Presidential Salute Battery is based at Ft. Myer, Virginia. Guns Platoon (as it is known for short) has the task of rendering military honors in the National Capital Region; these include: Armed Forces Full Honors Funerals; State Funerals; Presidential Inaugurations; full honors wreath ceremonies at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery; arrivals of Heads of State at The Pentagon, and General officer retirements in the Military District of Washington (MDW), which are normally conducted at Ft. Myer. Guns Platoon has ten vintage World War II hybrid anti-tank guns; each of the guns has a 3-inch barrel which is mounted on a 105 mm Howitzer chassis.

Comment by Susan-AZ

Max–

I like my learning– all through mistakes! :D
I just read a whole article on the 21 gun salute–

The 21-gun salute honoring the President of the United States, like many American military traditions, appears to be another custom inherited from Great Britain. In early times, it was customary for a ship entering a friendly port to discharge its broadsides to demonstrate that they were unloaded; eventually it became a British practice to fire a seven-gun salute. The forts ashore would fire three shots for each shot fired afloat. The three guns fired on shore to one gun fired on ship had a practical explanation. In earlier days, gunpowder was made of sodium nitrate and was easier to keep on shore than at sea. When gunpowder was improved by the use of potassium nitrate, the sea salute was made equal to the shore salute. The use of numbers “seven” and “three” in early gun salutes probably was connected to the mystical or religious significance surrounding these numbers in many cultures.

Gun salutes continue to be fired in odd numbers, of course, and this is likely because of ancient superstitions that uneven numbers are lucky. As early as 1685, the firing of an even number of guns in salute was taken as indicating that a ship’s captain, master, or master gunner had died on a voyage. Indeed, the firing of an even number of salute guns at the coronation of George VI in 1937 was regarded by at least one observer as an “ominous” portent. Incidentally, the normal interval of five seconds in the firing of gun salutes likely is in order for the salute to have full auditory effect, and also to give the salute a more solemn character.

The United States presidential salute has not always been 21 guns. In 1812 and 1821 it was the same as the number of states, i.e. 18 and 24, respectively, which was also our international salute. After 1841 the President received a salute of 21 guns and the Vice President 17; currently the Vice President receives a salute of 19 guns.

There has evolved over the last 175 years or so a prescribed number of guns, set forth in various Army regulations, to be fired for various dignitaries in accordance with the perceived importance of their positions. On 18 August 1875, the United States and Great Britain announced an agreement to return salutes “gun for gun,” with the 21-gun salute as the highest national honor.

Today, a 21-gun salute on arrival and departure, with 4 ruffles and flourishes, is rendered to the President of the United States, to an ex-President, and to a President elect. The national anthem or “Hail to the Chief,” as appropriate, is played for the President, and the national anthem for the others. A 21-gun salute on arrival and departure with 4 ruffles and flourishes also is rendered to the sovereign or chief of state of a foreign country, or a member of a reigning royal family. In these ceremonies, the national anthem of his or her country also is played.

Incidentally, U.S. Naval Regulations require that a 21-gun salute be fired at noon on Presidents Day, Independence Day, and Memorial Day.

Susan: i was busy in the day, so after my friend left i was checking out the blog, same time you emailed me.

They might do 21 gun salutes at the Pentagon, but that’s not really a tourist destination, so they’d more likely do salutes near the National Mall unless i related to the Pentagon.
I think they fired a salute at the Pentagon when Rumsfeld unveiled the 9/11 memorial there, but that’s probably one of the few times.

Maybe it was at the Iwo Jima 60th Anniversary held at Camp Pendleton, CA.

K2,

Indeed. I’m glad my kidneys are still working. For a few days they shut down.

Susan,

Yup, color, but in this case the male was easy to ID as his neck spot was so small, obviously a chick from last year. In his case it was just a vertical red slash whereas a female’s would be black. When he’s an adult his entire neck and chin will be black except for a red horizontal ring at the bottom of the black. On both, when they spread their tail feathers there’s two horizontal white stripes. The Blackchins are also probably THE most curious of the hummers when it comes to people. They’ll get right up into your face, inches away, just to check you out for no good reason that I can tell. I’ve had them do it to me walking down the street even. -Rod-

I wonder if Adam can cover the Olympics? He has asthma– I don’t know about the air–

But it sure would be cool if he could go and give us his “vista” on Beijing—

When the Olympics were held in Mexico City, the smog was bad then– compared to Beijing’s and Mexico City’s, I wouldn’t know– plus Mexico City has a high altitude, so I am sure some of the players had a hard time breathing–

I just got this in my e-mails– for fun-

The Jayne Carroll Show is a political talk radio program that airs daily in the Portland, Oregon, metropolitan area…
Carroll asked her audience to come up with an official name for the Clinton $1.7 million house in Chappaqua, New York.

Carroll’s call-in contest required the names to be in relative good taste, to be original, and to capture the essence of one or both of the Clintons. The response was overwhelming! Some names nominated for the Clintons’ New York house included:

Perjurers’ Palace
HillBilly Villa
The House of Bill’s Repute
Drawers Downs
Cheatem Estates
Sin Simeon
The Knee Pad
The White Trash House
The Blight House
The Panderosa

Liars’ Lair
Bill & Hill’s Bribe & Breakfast
The Clinton Compost
Dogpatch on the Hudson
The Hen House
The Out House
The Love Shack
The House of Seven Felonies
Motel Sex

But the clear, hands-down winner was - DISGRACELAND

Atlanta may sound better right now…but, oh that humidity in the summer…..

Susan, will have to go check on the start of the Olympics. Have you seen any of Steve Harrigan’s reports from China this past week? Huge smog problem - makes Los Angeles look like they have clear blue skies. Athletes are very worried about the air quality. I heard one runner is refusing to go due to the air quality (can’t remember what country he is from)

Comment by Susan-AZ

How can you tell the difference between the male and female? Color?

Susan,

No, I’m ok today. BP is just a tad high, mid 140’s. This scar in my neck is like a blood pressure cuff. I feel the changes, big time and in turn that scar acts sort of like a carotid massage. It can be dangerous. But it’s nothing like the 190’s I was hitting last week. No worries. -Rod-

K2,

I’ve been elbowing a friend in Hotlanta, telling her I’d gladly trade places with her, tornados and all. That’s actually true. In LA, the only time it rains is when it’s cold. It’s really disgusting.

FL, had I been really sick, I wouldn’t have replied, and you were NOT bothering me. Same answer on that ;)
Jen, I saw my first Blackchinned last week followed by another a few days ago, so the migrations have started. Oddly it was a female I saw first, then a male. Usually the males come in first to start staking out territory. The 26th is my BD :D -Rod-

K2,

It doesn’t seem like the IOC is getting nervous to me. According the article I read on FOX, they’re just sticking their heads in the sand. And here I thought that the Olympic games were all about setting aside of national differences:

The United States and other governments have urged China to show restraint on the protesters, though International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge deferred, saying he didn’t have details.

“It is not our job,” Rogge, the IOC president, told reporters while visiting Puerto Rico. “We are not an activist organization.”

The Associated Press
March 15, 2008
Caracas, Venezuela (AP) _ - Hundreds of protesting steel workers clashed Friday with police and National Guard troops who repelled them with tear gas and rubber bullets, a union leader said.

The violence erupted during a work stoppage at Sidor steel plants in the eastern state of Bolivar.
