Where in the World??

world_rel_803005ai_2003.jpg

Robert Shaffer has made it to Jordan and has already written his first dispatch. Be prepared for that to come on Monday. He will be able to comment and answer some of your questions. So as Robert arrives for work, I am taking off for vacation. BUT….where am I going? No cheating now. The person who guesses the right answer gets a special greeting. The only hint…..not tropical. Good luck!

Comment by Karen2 (K2)

From Susan’s article about Ireland……

But boosted by generous tax benefits for multinational companies, the Irish economy roared to life during the nineties, earning the moniker, the “Celtic Tiger.” Between 1995-2000, the economy expanded at an astounding average of 9.5 percent per year; now it has eased to a still robust rate of 4-5 percent annual growth.

Note: TAX BENEFITS — Not TAX INCREASES! Maybe the Irish leaders can share this with the US leaders……

Clinton says ‘we cannot win’ Iraq war

Published: 03.17.08, 21:32 / Israel News

Democrat Hillary Clinton charged on Monday the Iraq war may cost Americans $1 trillion and add strain to the sagging US economy as she made her case for a prompt US troop pullout from a war “we cannot win.”

This week marks the fifth anniversary of the US invasion of Iraq, but the economy’s woes competed for attention as the top issue facing voters when they choose their next president in November. (Reuters)

Terri: I think the problem for him is that it shows he played a race candidate to get elected to the senete, but now he wants to be president it’s come to bite him in the ass, since he can’t win as a race candidate. This also makes him look shallow, and as if he changes his position to get elected, the same problem Mitt Romney had, but far harder to explain.

Comment by LDG

@Susan-AZ

just nonsensical, not “bad”.

Northerners are in Northern Ireland, not in Eire (Republic of Ireland). They are by long tradition blood enemies.

*No* self-respecting loyalist (which is impled by the term “Northerner”) would be caught singing a nationalist song, especially one that advocates the (re-)conquest of “his” land by his blood enemy.

this may lead to your asking “why can *you* sing “Four Green Fields” then?
answer: because I had need to be seen as a republican Irishman at times in my life, and it helps if you can join in the singing they start when you are in a pub full of such fellows.

LDG - thanks for the clairification.

Yep, think it is better to be wearin’ of the green today….., if you are venturing into a bar!

Comment by Susan-AZ

Patty–

as we learn together-

The song tells of an old woman who had four green fields; and how strangers tried to take them from her; and how her sons died trying to defend them. Its middle stanza is a description of the violence and deprivation experienced by the Irish, including the people in Northern Ireland (currently part of the UK), though the British are not explicitly identified (nor Saxons, nor Danes).[3] At the end of the song, one of her fields remains out of her hands:

“But my sons have sons, as brave as were their fathers;
My fourth green field will bloom once again,” said she.
The song is interpreted as a parable of the British colonization of Ireland and the current status of Northern Ireland. The four fields are the Provinces of Ireland with Ulster being the “field” that is still in British hands, the old woman a traditional personification of Ireland herself (see Kathleen Ni Houlihan).

Comment by LDG

@Susan-AZ

yes, that is “Four Green Fields”. now can you tell me what it means? ((does the professor pose))

Comment by Susan-AZ

Adam–

are you singing this in Eire at the moment?

Comment by LDG

“narthanar” = northerner, in the patois. Means a Northern Irishman and implies Ulsterman.

Comment by Susan-AZ

What did I have, said the fine old woman
What did I have, this proud old woman did say
I had four green fields, each one was a jewel
But strangers came and tried to take them from me
I had fine strong sons, who fought to save my jewels
They fought and they died, and that was my grief said she

Long time ago, said the fine old woman
Long time ago, this proud old woman did say
There was war and death, plundering and pillage
My children starved, by mountain, valley and sea
And their wailing cries, they shook the very heavens
My four green fields ran red with their blood, said she

What have I now, said the fine old woman
What have I now, this proud old woman did say
I have four green fields, one of them’s in bondage
In stranger’s hands, that tried to take it from me
But my sons had sons, as brave as were their fathers
My fourth green field will bloom once again said she

@Susan-AZ

re: Eire.

Oh good, you got it while I was away.

re:”I wonder if I wore Orange and went into a bar today–Irish bar, how many people would throw mugs at me? Or would they even know?”

True story. San Francisco, middle 1980’s. Walked into the pub that *is* named “The Starry Plow” there with an old teammate who grew up in the same part of S.F. (and is Irish-American, and is R.C., not that that ever troubled us). We went up to the bar line to get pints and the bartender took one look at me, looked over at my pal and said “What’s his name?”. My pal introduced me by my given name. Bartender said: “No. What is his *name*?”. My pal offers my family name. In one heartbeat, all eyes right and left of us at the bar line turned to *me*. “That’s a narthanar’s name, that is”, said the bartender…

…and things got a bit fun from there. Ah, my mis-spent youth. ((grins more))

Comment by Max

I wore green today, but i’d forgotton it was St Patricks Day.

Comment by Susan-AZ

Have you ever seen this one?

Caitlin Ni Houlahain (Symbol of Ireland)
They stole her dowry from the warm black thatch.
They quenched her fire and left her cold to moan.
She hears no lover’s thumb upon the latch,
But all night weeps alone.

I saw her praying hands across the leas,
Like lilies sloping in the breezy rain,
Imploring those beyond the western seas
To come to her again.

But Caitlin, I will be your lover now.
I’ll fold you in my strength and ease your pain,
‘Till all the wanderers return to you.
And build your house again.

Comment by LDG

@Susan-AZ

“The Starry Plow”

That is one of the nationalist symbols of Eire. Many, many Irish-Americans are sympathetic to the republican cause, and as such a public house (or you would say “bar”) in any American city might well have such a name.

“…and crossed over to the green side, big huge fight?”

Been that way for about 400 years, so yes.

“Do I have to look Eire up? Where is this?”

That is the name of the country, the independent Republic of Ireland. (It is also used as misnomer for the island of Ireland.)

Comment by Susan-AZ

Adam–

Are you in Erie and headed over to England? Don’t forget Max–

Comment by Patty

Susan…maybe they will throw beer! :-)

Comment by Susan-AZ

Adam–

Are you in Erie?

Comment by Susan-AZ

Here Patty–

Éire is the nominative form in modern Irish of the name for the goddess called Ériu in Old Irish, a mythical figure who helped the Gaels conquer Ireland as described in the Book of Invasions. It is still used in the Irish language today to refer to the whole island of Ireland.

Éire is also the official name of the state Ireland, which has sovereignty over most of the island of Ireland.

Comment by Max

Susan: it’s very windy, cold and wet here.

Comment by Susan-AZ

The Starry Plow— where in Ireland so I don’t go there–

Well LDG–thanks for the clarification– and the lesson behind it–

Do I have to look Eire up? Where is this?

Retread.. stopped the amnesty bill??? If you’rte referring to McCain/Kennedy, ok, but, We have 5 bills sitting on the house floor, all relating to amnesty and illegal immigration, Pelosi is stalling all of them, citing that Congress needs time to argue the issues… what she wants to do is added voting rights to 20 million illegals, she also wants to add that they receive social benefits…which in turn will help the democratic party. That’s not a done deal yet with the amnesty.

Comment by Patty

well crud, i put the wrong color on today! *L* ;-)
have never heard that btw.

Comment by LDG

@Susan-AZ

“Catholics wear green and the Protestants orange?”

No. It is incorrect, but that is how it is portrayed in much of modern media. The correct distinction is Green is associated with the nationalist movement in Irish history, and the modern Republican Irish both in Eire and in Northern Ireland. Orange is associated with the loyalist movement, loyal to the British Crown.

Here’s the specific origin of the Orange association, for those who actually want to see the details:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orange_Institution

Warning: Discussing this topic in a pub named “The Starry Plow” or some such is hazardous to your (or others) health.

loyalist, rather than republican. The religious division is not quite absolute, and utterly inapplicable in my case. But to your point, yes, paternal line was all Ulstermen of the old school.
