Motown Madness

One Detroit City Council member is calling it a “constitutional crisis:” a City Hall scandal involving sex, text, and the mayor of one of America’s largest cities.

Both daily newspapers have called on Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick to resign from office for the good of the city. But Motown’s Mayor refuses to go, at least for now, creating a political power struggle in city of 900,000, a city which for decades has struggled with poverty, blight, and crime … recently earning the dubious honor from Forbes magazine as the “The Most Miserable City in America.”

Kilpatrick, 37, is a father of three with immeasurable political skills. He is the youngest African American to be a leader of any party in the Michigan Legislature, and the youngest person ever to be mayor of this city. He’s a hulk of a man, a former college football lineman and ex-team captain at Florida A&M, standing 6′5″, and somewhere in the neighborhood of 300 lbs. His figure notwithstanding, during my numerous interviews with the guy, I’ve found him to be an engaging and outgoing man…a guy who once wore a diamond studded earring as mayor … a guy with such a gift for gab that the Detroit press once nicknamed him “The Hip Hop Mayor.”

10_22_kwamekilpatrick_350.jpgHis flashy ways and widely reported partying have been scrutinized by local media from the get-go, even though he succeeded in cleaning up some of the most impoverished neighborhoods, brought business to downtown Detroit, and launched campaigns to rid the streets of guns. But his good work seems long forgotten in Motown, with foes and even former supporters, calling for his resignation. As one of his most biggest campaign contributors told me, “This guy could have been mayor for life. But instead, he screwed us all.”

On the surface, this story might just seem like another sex scandal … another politician falling from grace … but let me tell you why this is far from a provincial “affair.”

Michigan has the highest unemployment rate of any state in the nation. As Detroit goes…so goes Michigan…so goes the U.S. auto industry based here in Detroit and its suburbs. Kilpatrick claims he’ll be able to carry out business as usual. But so many people here tell me it’ll be tough for anyone here to focus on anything other than this City Hall scandal, potentially meaning long decaying Detroit might continue to suffer.

The Mayor was set up by the white man.
Only god can judge him and he already been forgivin by god so you should leave him alone.

It is really so sad that a person thinks that he is so above the law. Kwame has been ripping off the city for years. And people really can’t complain now because they re-elected him. It seems like his entire family is collecting a paycheck from the city. And what ever happed to the story about Kwame and his “girlfriend” at a romantic get a way in Ashville, NC over the Martin Luther Holiday? I guess not even the press can keep up with all of his scandles. It is just sad that now the tax payers of Detroit have to pay for another trial that surrounds king mayor!! What a thug!!!!!

Kilpatrick is stuck on stupid. He is an embarrassment to the city, to the state and the nation. He has no honor, no intergrity! He cares nothing for the people, just his ego. He needs to go. NOW!

Another example of corrupt politicians gone awry. How can anyone with any inteligence think that if they are elected to a public ofice that said office should pay a lease on ANY vehicle for the official’s spouse??? This kind of government gone awry is the reason why Michigan has been economically depressed for the majority of the last 30 years.

High state income tax, high workman’s comp premiums, high unemployment insurance premiums: Michigan is a welfare state. Unemployment is high because no one can afford to do business there. If nothing changes the Lower Penninsula will depopulate just like the Upper Penninsula did when the copper played out. I had to leave 23 years ago to find work and I hope I never have to go through anything like that again.

Don’t be a Bill Clinton! It is time to stand up to your responsibilities as a man. This town cannot function with all your dirty laundry flapping in the wind. Even your own city council is saying step down! Do the right thing and resign.

Comment by David

I’ve lived in Detroit for years and I still can’t get over how people in politics feel that it’s ok to do these things and cover it up, (Clinton & Lewinsky, Watergate, etc..) now we have another person who is supposed to be a leader and an example have an affair, lie about it on the stand, fire the policemen who investigated this issue, THEN pay them 8 million dollars taxpayer money to settle. And to this day lie about it even though there is plain proof of these text messages showing the mayor did indeed have an affair! Kilpatrick should of course resign. I am expecting this to go on for months and months though.

I have ben to Detroit 5-6 times in the past 12 months and all I can say is the only city I have been in worse shape was New Orleans before Katrina hit. City streets in the skyline look like streets in Iraq. There was garbage 2-3 feet deep on the curbs. There are no street markings on most streets and a lot of city street signs are missing. It shows a total lack of management skills. Kwame had zero experience and add in his greed and it is a total disaster. They should build a fence around Detroit.

Kwame claims he is innocent but his defense will be to suppress the text messages. He is not innocent and they should go to trial tomorrow and throw this criminal in jail. This boy has no concept of the law or reality. He has not only lied but his attempts to impede the investigation will put this boy behind bars. You could tell from the DA she was very upset with Kwame’s efforts to impede her investigation.

What’s worse if this boy was running for office this November they would elect him for another term. We’ve seen it too many times before, Ray Nagin, William Jefferson, Marion Barry.

I think the mayor shouldnt resign.Let him have his day in court and then if he found guilty then he should leave office.

as one of the working class the mayor has done some great things, but when he puts himself “above” the law and the people it does not matter what good he has done. if he doesnt have to tell the truth in court then why should we.

Mr. Kilpatrick is no worst than any mayor the city of Detroit has ever had!!! I know, I live there for 51 years! Yes, he’s young, yes, he’s controversial but he inherited a city that can’t be saved! No salary in the world was worth that job. Now, the sex, lies and text messages. Who has he hurt? His family of course but none of the citizens and I say citizens (criminals, non-tax payers, felons, drug addicts) and a small percentage of decent people want him to GO. Who else is there? Hilary nor Barack would have his job for $3,000,000.00 a year!!! The media had nor has any respect for him. He is human. How many men are guilty of x-tra marital affairs—New York newest inductee, BILL CLINTON and so on. I’m outraged. Prosecution for Perjury–wasted tax money again!! The city council needs to be disbanded. Prosecute them for all the lies and underhanded deals that they’ve made with devil. Mayor Kilpatrick, (Please adress him by his title, all other Detroit mayors were such as Mayor Young) has become a product of his enviorment. This behavior didn’t exist before he made his political resident in Detroit. Mayor Kilpatrick, I still respect you!!

Comment by Joseph Warren

This is the legacy of arrogance we inherited from Bill Clinton. “It’s just sex”. “It’s a private matter”. Yet people are illegally fired from jobs. Tax dollars are spent on out of court settlements. And kids are growing up with role models who have no morals. This is why Bill Clinton should have been removed from office. We have let our political leaders vacate themselves from any moral responsibility. I guess as long as they are likable they can break as many laws and commandments they want. By re-wording their lies they can commit purjury and change history. Now, another lawyer, Hillary Clinton is spreading lies about her visit to Bosina. But when she says she ‘Misspoke” it is o.k. Enough is enough. This Detroiter is very proud of prosecuter Kym Worthy and her chalange. I pray she is successful in ending this disgusting display Mayor Kilpatrick insists on dragging my city and his family through. Perhaps when he is found guilty his children and others will learn that, as the prosecuter pointed out in her indictment announcement, when people do bad things they are punished. Sad that she had to give everyone a basic civics lesson. But someone had to.

Comment by erik_landjaeger

this type of questionable behavior is becoming common place today than ever before……i guess it says something about the very poor moral quality we are electing today…….not to mention the outright lying to the citizens they were sworn to protect………shameful…….maybe a 15 year jail sentence would send a calling card and be the step in a new direction to more truthful government……

Comment by Bob Rocklin

Mr. Kilpatrick got nailed. His Lawyer makes him look like the second coming of Jesus Christ. Based on the facts he will be found guilty – hopefully he gets 10 years in jail to think about his sleazy deeds. So sad for his family and his co-defendent.

That’s it? That’s all you have to say about this issue. You give us his Bio and they say its more than just a sex scandal. But that’s it? I was excited when I read the line “but let me tell you why this is far from a provincial “affair.” But you really let me know. I thought for sure that you would outline the fact that this lie about an affair is a very very very important piece of what started this whole thing. Officers during their job not being persuading by power when so many people allege officers fold to those with money and power. When they were fired over investigating corruption in the mayor’s office and with the mayor himself. ONE of the issues at hand was unauthorized overtime being paid to officers on the mayors security detail while the mayor was one having affairs. One of those affairs being with Beatty. During the trial both denied having and affair and both denied firing the police officers. THAT is why this lie is so important. Both knew they were having an affair and both knew that the officers were fired for investigating them. HOWEVER, to make things worse, instead of putting their tails between their legs and settling the matter early on. They decided to lie. Those lies caused more legal costs and a jury verdict for over 6 million against the city. And still they wanted to fight. Kwame vowed to appeal. However, once approached with the text messages that proved they lied about the affair and lie about firing the police officers. Kwame RECOMMENDED a settlement of 8.4 million. A case that once could have been settled for six figures ended up being settled for almost eight figures all due to his arrogance.

I COMPLETELY understand that his is not the most eloquent summary of events. However, there is two reasons for that. 1: I am too frustrated by the national media reported the sex scandal and nothing else. 2: I am not the professional. You are. However, because you failed to report the important issues. I was force to.

How is he different from the average person, professional politcian, or religous representative, man or woman?

Comment by Remus

Who cares? Just another politician who thought he was immune because of his position. When will these people learn that, because they have been elected to an office where service is the requirement, a higher standard of behavior is required? If they cannot or will not meet this requirement, they should quit and stop being parasites on our society.

For sure and certain, the case against the Detroit mayor is a miscarriage of justice. Discounting the reported thousand or so steamy sexually charged text messages, by the by, traced to the mayor’s personal cellular telephone, the charges are complete lies. Being just like Bill Clinton, the mayor’s responce is “Clintonese” that the supposed sexual intercourse was between concenting adults.

Additionally “Clintonese”, the mayor doesn’t consider “bending” truth worthy of criminal charges.

Very “Clintonese”, the mayor forgets that the civil case provided enough evidence of a “miscarriage of justice” to make some police officers: “instant millionares”!

Just another politician who speak: “Clintonese”!!

This guy has got to go, period. He doesn’t think the law appliesto him. Asthe son of a D.C. lawmaker, a former lawmarkerand leaderin the state house here, I think he’s grown up with the mentality that he and his family are lawmakers and thus can do as he pleases.

Just to show howhis thought process works just look at his text, such as when he and his mistress had a tryst in D.C. and their lovemaker (as she thought) was loud enough for the door security to hear. “we are so busted”. KK “Not busted if not seen” “never busted”.

This guy is so arogent that he stated 3 weeks ago he said that it is Gods mission for himm to be mayor of detroit. With such arogence brings ignorence.Such as less than a year after a ncaap mock burial of they n word, he feels that doesn’t apply to him either.

While obama is trying to show that race should be irrelavent in polotics. Mayor kilpatric and for the most part all Detroit area pols do just the opposite. Yes, along with the blackjack cards at the casinos, the race card still plays quite well in Detroit politics.

Comment by Bill

Sometimes leaders think they are bigger than life and their postion goes to their head. They believe they are indispensible. That appears to be the case here. This country has laws and rules to live by and they must be followed or one must suffer the consequences.

Why is there no mention that he is a democrat? If he had been a republican, it would have been in the headline.

To most Detroiters this is a lot more than just a sex scandal. What gets peoples attention is the pattern of behavior by the mayor and his associates. It goes back to rumored party at the mayor’s mansion years back during which it is believed that a stripper was beaten up and hospitalized (by the mayor’s wife). The stripper was later shot several times outside her home. Yes, that sounds really bad, but it seams most of the evidence of the incident vanished, such as the police report (which a witness to the report came forward about), hospital records, and witnesses. It has been heard on many occasions that people with information about the mayors incidents have been threatened, including the officers who came forward in the whistlenlower case. The mayor has much of the city government on strings. I think the prosecutor was eluding to just how much in her announcement. It will be interesting to hear how the remainder of her investigation pans out. Later she claimed that after seeing what she has seen she worries for her own life. Then, when all else fails for the mayor, he plays the race card; which unfortunately often works for him, even when it makes no sense what he is saying. It’s very frustrating and a bit scary. The last thing the city needs is to take steps backward in its race relations. The mayor is willing to fuel that prospect to save himself.

The worse part is the impact this will have on development in the city. There has been good momentum, but many developers are going to now likely to hold off on their plans until this gets resolved. City projects require a close connection with the mayor’s offie. Who wants to invest their interests with an office that may be flipped upside down in the near future?

I hope he resigns or gets removed soon, but unfortunately that is not likely to happen. He’s to arrogant and has too many allies who’s jobs rely on him being in office. The city desperately needs a fresh start throughout that branch of their government.

Comment by Rodney Jarvis Jenkins

Kwame Kilpatrick is making Coleman Young look good and is undoing everything Mayor Dennis Archer did before him. Being elected mayor does not give one the right to act above the law. The man needs to do the right thing for the City of Detroit and resign immediately. While Michigan and the City of Detroit have some of, if not, the highest unemployment in the Nation, this fool is out living the high life as if the whole thing is one big party. He has a fiduciary duty to serve his constituents rather than himself. The people need a mayor like Dennis Archer again. It’s past time for talk, only action (the mayor resigning) will do. Otherwise Detroit is as good as the next New Orleans; corrupt & self-serving politicians have run that city for decades! All the political skills in the world and abilities to get things done to improve the city are worthless when you are corrupt.

This is what you get when you elect someone like him. He is toast! Way beyond his means. Michigan when are you going to wake up? You keep electing people that put you down, look at yourself in a mirror and say, what are we doing wrong?
Get conservative Michigan. Help yourself.

There’s more going on here than just a sex scandal. Kilpatrick used 9 million dollars of taxpayer money to settle a Whistleblower Protection lawsuit filed against him and the City by members of the Police Department. One of the conditions of the settlement was the burying of the text messages that led to the sex scandal. And this is FAR from his first scandal.

I think we have a very good mayor. I have never seen this city looking this good ever. All of the business that he have brought to this city. Or how about all of the low income homes he has had built in this city all of the projects that he has torn down and or about to this city has not look or ran this good snice the 80’s . kym worthy is up for re-election thats why she doing this. free kwame!!!!!!!

Comment by Richard Quick

Why is it that if a president like Clinton has to answer for what he did. The Mayor must think he is above that ! I hear they are trying to get the text messages thrown out even though the Mayor went on Television and apoligized for his part which if i am not wrong T.V. is public information , couldn’t they use that against him in court??? was just wondering . The Mayor which the public , works for and is paid by the taxes and whatever else, is coming from the public tax payers so in my own opion they, the tax payers, should be able to see the text messages which where done when he was working as mayor!! This is my own opion which is shared by many others .

It appears lying has become a way of life. What ever happened to telling the truth? Such a shame. Do I care if someone has an affair? No! Do I care if the affair effects someone else’s life? Yes

Comment by JDM

I live in Michigan and this mayor has been corrupt from day 1. He has wasted so much tax payers money from having more security detail than any mayor in the country to leasing a Lincoln Navigator for his wife with tax payers money. Now he has cost the city millions and ruined its reputation.

In all honesty, I do not blame him, I blame all the people who voted him back for a second term after all the scandals. You can only blame the media for so long before it catches up with you and hopefully, this time, it does. All the major accomplishments of Detroit such as the Super bowl and casinos was the work for previous mayor Dennis Archer who did a great job.

Detroit has a long history of corruption starting with Mayor Colman Young and Kwame is no different. If Kwame is not convicted of a crime then it is obvious that politicans can truely get away with anything, just like President Clinton lying under oath Hopefully, justice will be served and the voters will be much smarter in the next mayoral election.

Comment by Joel Stone

What a shame for the city of Detroit. If he cares about the city he would step down from his office.

I am a person who “reads between the lines”.
There has been a distinct lack of details in this
whole event. Media suppression at least.
No picture of the woman involved.
Not even one mention of the actual content of
these “text messages”.
They were recovered from a publically provided
device, doesn’t that make the records public?
Obvious perjury is only a crime,
if you can’t afford to cover it up.

Comment by Joe DeSchryver

This Mayor, who has reduced the health care benefits of retired Police and Fire Department members, spent 9 million dollars of City funds to settle the lawsuit of two whistle blowers, just so he could cover up his lies.

He now wants you to believe that he didn’t lie under oath! Yea, right!

I’ll bet 9 million would restore a lot of the health care to retirees and widows.

I wonder, when the criminal matter is over, if the City of Detroit can sue the convicted former Mayor and his girlfriend to recover some of that 9 million?

From what I have read about this situation Mayor Kilpatrick and his assistant is as guilty as sin. The text messages speaks for themselves and for him to claim that he is “not guilty” is a shame. I really feel bad for his wife and children because they have to go through this terrible ordeal and apparently he had NO regard for them at all during his little love affair. I can remember reading about this so call hip hop Mayor years back and how he was doing so much for the city of Detroit but it looks as though he was doing more for himself and his lover. She as a woman she be ashame of herself as well, where is her dignity. I know that these kind things happen so often in our society and regardless of whom it may be a high offical or just a regular working man or woman it doesn’t make it right. He was put into office to do positive things and make positive changes for the city not to act in a inappropiate manner like this. Mr.Kilpatrick should do the dignified thing and just step down and take his punishment like a man and so should she. My prays goes out to Mrs.Kilpatrick and the boys.

Comment by Sheri

This guy has been accused of crooked doings during his entire term. I have no clue how ANYONE has backed him. Detroit is a critical part of Michigan’s struggling economy and he’s hurting everyone by staying in office. If he loves Detroit as much as he says he does, whether proven innocent or guilty, he needs to step down.

Comment by sandy

Another thing I would like to say even though he has done somethings for the City of Detroit by bring in business and even getting control of the guns on the street. The people of the Ctiy are still in a uproar over how he handle his personal life. Which they should be. He has tarnished something that was so outstanding in his life such as being the youngest black man to ever lead the legislation in Michigan and to be the youngest to ever to be the Mayor of that City. What a accomplishment and then to distroy it over mere sexual pleasure with someone other then your wife. It breaks my heart to even read something like this. This is what you call taking and using your job towards your advantage, on both sides. Then to do adult things but not admit that you both are wrong like an adult. My husband went back to Detroit about a year or so ago and said the City looks really bad, he said the once beautiful homes are all boarded up and vacant. We have family out there but he says it not what it used to be and I remember it used to a beautiful place. To hear that the unemployment rate in Michigan is the highest in any nation. Mr.Kilpatrick please step down, you had your chance and time is up for you! My opinion you and your assisant is guilty as charge.

Thanks, Jeff, great blog which clarified some important things. I can see that ramifications could result from a long legal battle with the mayor and the city. The city of Detroit will suffer if it goes long, because no one is going to be thinking how to help Detroit, thus Michigan will be hurt and on down the line.

Great reporting, Jeff!

Can we do some kind of sweep of all elected officials nationwide, find out who is a liar, cheater, filanderer, etc., get rid of them and start over?

I know it will be a huge task and many will fall, but it strikes me as sad that these people who hold themselves in such high regard are actually making the laws that the rest of us have to follow, while they deem themselves above them.

We are sure hell bent make this country as low as we can. Something has happen to people’s abilitily to choose someone for office who are running for the for the people and country. People today are more educated , but lack any common sense what so ever. Is that what a college degree does for you, wipes out the morals and common sense?
