Earth’s Darkest Hour

Saturday night at 8:00, the Atlanta skyline goes partially dark. The lights stay off for one hour in the city’s tallest buildings and most popular tourist attractions.  At 9:00, things return to normal in Atlanta. But now lights are off in Chicago, where it’s 8:00 Central Time.

An hour later, it’s 8:00 Mountain Time and the city of Phoenix goes partially dark. In another 60 minutes, the lights go out at Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge and other San Francisco area landmarks.

The scenario is not some rolling blackout or belated effect of the Y2K bug, but a publicity campaign to draw attention to energy conservation, carbon emissions and climate change.

“Earth Hour,” which is being organized by the World Wildlife Fund, is expected to be observed in some form or fashion by local governments, businesses and individuals in more than 200 cities around the world tomorrow (Saturday March 29) as 8pm rolls around to each time zone..

The event was first observed last year in Sydney, Australia, where more than two million people turned out their lights. During that hour, the city reduced its energy consumption by an estimated 10 percent.

But Earth Hour organizers concede the event is not a 60 minute solution. They tell me their primary goal is to generate long-term awareness.

“To be honest, we could turn off every light in the world for an hour and it wouldn’t have a demonstrable change in terms of climate change,” said WWF spokeswoman Leslie Aun. “What’s important here is really the symbolism of people saying that they care about this issue.”

It is incredible that people are arrogant enough to think that man has an effect on global climate. It is rediculous that people use 200 years of weather data to determine patterns for a world that has been around for billions of years. At one time the world was covered in ice, but now its not. Obviously the world is warming, but we give Al Gore a Nobel Prize for pointing it out. Common Sense is not as common as people think.

This is funny. Earth has seen its heating, cooling, ice ages and dinosours. Switching of lights for one hour to show you care doesn’t mean much. At any rate, if you really care, turn off the air conditioners for a season or two and may be permanently. That would be a way to show you care. Instead asking everyone to switch of lights or sleep for one hour or some such ritual doesn’t cut.

I’m in full support of this event, but FYI, Phoenix, as well as the rest of Arizona, doesn’t change time as the states around it do. Arizona is on Pacific time in the summer and Mountain time in the winter. Denver would be a better example of a city on Mountain time.

YOu are all rediculous.

yeah, don’t ask phoenicians to turn off their A/C, cause it ain’t happening!

Arizona is on MST year round (which happens to be the same as PDT in the summer) ;)

I’m disgusted by this event. Turning the lights out symbolizes surrender and metaphysical impotence. At 8:00PM will shrink and grovel in fear. The event says we are guilty for daring to live.

We’ve embraced some kind of primitive religious horror, except the iconography of this new dark age consists of trendy PC terms and images served up by phony priests of “consensus science”. Repackaged as CO2, “original sin” pours from our mouths with every breath. We are SOO SORRY for being alive, for building, for loving, for breeding children, for warming ourselves against a cold night - for daring against the dark with: LIGHT.

Shame on the this idea and all those behind it! My lights will be ON at 8:00!!

Nobody will argue that the earth has cyclical patterns of warming and cooling. The issue at hand is the overwhelming evidence that we humans are accelerating the process quite steeply since the industrial revolution.

Comment by Irv

“The issue at hand is the overwhelming evidence that we humans are accelerating the process quite steeply since the industrial revolution.”

Not exactly.
The issue must eventually boil down to this:
are YOU willing to

1. off yourself, or
2. live a primitive existence without the comforts we have learned to love,
in order that mankind will exist on the earth for a few centuries longer than he would otherwise.

My guess is that you, and nearly everybody else would say “no”.
Because in the long run, mankind along with the rest of the planet’s inhabitants is doomed.
What difference if it comes a few years sooner or later?

is it? i am not so sure if my teacher hadnt taught me about the little ice age back in the early 70’s i might have been more prone to believe
but since i know the little ice age happened and i dont see it in the ice hockey stick that is most commonly used to prove how much the weather changes have deviated i dont
that with a few other historical facts that dont show in the model! make me a skeptical of anything they have to say.

Comment by conobs

it wont make a difference to the planet but it will help people to be famous and help them to make more money… given the choice between a company that has stupid but pc and cute ideals and a company that just dos the best they can with what they have most americans will pick cute.

you dont have to be a history major to understand people have been make money predicting the end of the world for a very long time

as they lose unreasonable control that was granted by their religions they will seek to replace it with other stupid stuff to mantain control
it realy isnt that different… god told me you are doing things wrong… now its mother gia… pure bs resting on a small amout of facts that only lead to the “end of the world” conclusion if you ignore even more facts
here is a fact for you, no matter what we do or dont do sooner or later the sun will burn out… the planet will freeze… all life on our planet will end…
so lets quit pretending we are the center of the universe and live in a static situation that will last forever as long as we dont mess it up… we have x number of years to gain the tech to spread before disaster over takes us, muddy the watter all you want to but the only path to survival for us is TECH
quit trying to kill the chicken that laid the golden egg…
most of you dont realize this stuff plays into the hands of those most responsible for it and makes them more money
dont let people use the land it will ruin it… no let the feds save it till the rich pay them to give them access to strip mine it! ya thats the ticket

First awareness, then action.

It doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things. Our carbon dioxide emissions will melt the polar ice caps. The fresh water will fill the Atlantic, desalinating the water and disrupt the flow of cooler water south and warmer water north. The world will cool dramatically and no more global warming.

“are YOU willing to

1. off yourself, or

in order that mankind will exist on the earth for a few centuries longer than he would otherwise.”

It’s about recognition, doing the right thing, advancing society and yes, if it happens to extend the lives of future generations - by all means let’s do it.

Your assumption is partially correct. I am not a tree hugger and I do contribute quite significantly to the problem. The difference between people in you and I is that I realize it is a problem and acknowledge something can and should be done. Green initiatives and technologies presents the largest untapped market for development and is completely sustainable. Even VC’s like John Doerr are investing in it.

I do want to support the green movement, but I also want to keep my creature comforts and live in a society that is economically healthy. And I believe all of these things can be accomplished. Your vision is extremely selfish and narrow minded.

I’ll give you one example that everyone can relate to. What would things look and smell like in every large metro area where there is a high concentration of vehicles on the road if steps were not taken to implement smog control like exhaust gas recirculation and catalytic converters? I’ll tell you what, I don’t ever want to find out. The car industry said it couldn’t be done and legislation forced them to do it. Guess what, every single manufacturer eventually met the code and even the toughest code standards enforced in California. Where there is a will (and money) there is a way.

Just do the right thing…

The myth that man is causing global warming is a myth. The oceans dictate weather patterns, not air temperature. Recent data collected by both NASA and NOAA show a temperature DECLINE in the oceans - based on over 400 robotic data collectors currently deployed and in use. There is more ice in Antarctica than at any point in recorded history, this is a fact. What is not a fact is that there is conclusive evidence that global warming is taking place at all. We cannot base a theory on such a limited amount of meteorological data that we have recorded. One thing is clear, there are cycles of climactic change that will and have always occurred on earth. Man is not great enough to stem the tide - to think so would be ignorant and self righteous.

Comment by conobs

people try to muddy the waters with “you cant deny its getting warmer”
hoping you wont notice that has nothing to do with it

global warming as discussed today refers to warming of the earth due to human interference
and that is a myth!!!
it has nothing to do with ones belief as to if the temperature going up or down but what is causing it

it reminds me of a line from some movie i forgot the name of

it went something like “when i realize i wasnt god or the devil”

to me that goes to the heart of it, people want to believe they are so much more important than they are.
well if we cant be the center of the universe we must be the cause for its end

here is another ignored fact… sooner or later we will go thru another cooling period and that would be a real disaster to human kind as well as most life on the planet
if given the choice between 5 degrees hoter or colder take hotter you will save a lot of lives
talk about a fat head…

Wake up and smell the science people.

Do you think the hole in ozone fixed itself? No, reduction of CFC’s did. What do you believe created the hole to begin with? I’ll give you hint - it wasn’t farting cows. Has anyone ever studied the atmosphere and the effects man made gases and pollutants have on it? This is what keeps the oxygen from escaping into space and protects us from getting pummeled from the solar winds and radiation.

Ignoring the science and discounting your significance and ability to affect your surroundings is very short-sided. This kind of thinking is akin to the folks that would deprive their diabetic child from seeking medical attention, instead choosing to solely pray for healing. Would you let you child die or give them a shot of insulin? Do you know how many people die from common infections in the world? Would you treat it by sacrificing a snake, sprinkling it with dirt and shaking a stick overhead? Not me - I’d pop a penicillin and call it a day. Ever hear of the plague anymore? No? Well it’s because we’ve learned how to control rats and wash our dirty asses. Have you ever gotten sick from glass of fresh milk? Probably not - and it’s because of pasteurization. Science teaches these lessons that some of us have learned to take for granted.

Don’t ignore the evidence. Science doesn’t lie - it is only misunderstood.

Comment by Paul Wood

Ah yes - the ozone hole: It seemed to have been fixed immediately as soon as CFCs were outlawed. Even though CFC release into the atmosphere continued to increase for some years after the ban. (And this was a big propaganda point during the push for a ban - that we had to “ACT NOW!!!” because CFC would continue to increase even after the ban due to old leaking cooling systems, peaking about 10 years after we stopped making new CFCs. Even if we acted right away, millions would still be exposed to lethal UV levels!!!)

Yes sir, that ozone hole closed up right away even though CFC concentration continued to increase. It must have known we passed the law and just obediently closed up right as the legislation was signed! After all, there was no point in annoying us any further.

It’s clear that the hole would have decreased naturally even if we’d done nothing about CFCs. Oh, the science on CFCs is correct - the reaction does take place. It is the magnitude of the CFC effect that has been politically inflated beyond all actual significance.

And that’s what will happen when we combat warming by crouching in the dark and shivering in the cold: The natural heating and cooling pattern of the earth will eventually enter a natural cooling phase - no matter what we do. Al Gore will take credit; he’s saved the world! Millions will have suffered poorer lives than they would have had without Kyoto, etc. Politics will have triumphed over reason.

Man cannot destroy this planet. Even if we nuked each other off the face of the earth life would still be here and come back and the plants would take over buildings and life simply will not die.
I’m going to turn all the lights in my house on.

Wake up America!! Global Warming is the latest and greatest scam that is being pulled on people around the world.

iSmart,

Science doesn’t lie? You’re kidding me, right?

Science is just like the Bible….people pick and choose things that will support their views and then try to cram it down the throats of everyone who doesn’t think like they do.

Scientists/Meteorologists can’t even get tomorrows forecast correct and you think I should believe them when they trot out “The Sky Is Falling” scenario?

As a citizen of PLanet Earth, I am more worried about the asteroid that is hurdling towards us or the super volcano that could errupt at any second. Why don’t these real potential disasters get as much play as global warming? Because no one could make any money off of them.

The tributes for EARTH HOUR are nice and easy to observe. However there is a rumour
that environmental activists with severe hostility SHARED BY revolutionaries like E.L.F. are
considering Sharia as their ‘New Laws’ based in CHALDEAN PHILOSOPHY from Anti-Deluvian
cultures(read the books by DONNELLY about Atlantis and Ragnarok). I THINK A FLIP OF THE SWITCH IS A BETTER WAY THAN A PUNCH IN THE FACE from those who thieve and destroy cars.
Thanks for the LIGHTS plans for Earth Hour. It is a better way.

Stupid. Time for looters and muggers. Won’t make one bit of difference in any shape form or manner

Ok, so it’s silly to turn the lights off for one hour, no impact on anything…but it does impact amateur astronomers who have to live in the cities under their light pollution. Turning city lights off the entire night, every night would be a great thing for us. Or at least, city lighting should be directed downward and not illuminate the entire sky!

Sheila, I am willing to bet that Al Gore himself leaves the lights on at his house tonight and just buys $20 worth of carbon credits to cover the cost. CO2 is not the problem. It is less than 1% of our atmosphere. The entire global warming hoax is based on unreliable data. How many thermometers in 1920 were accurate to a 10th of a degree and how many of the people measuring the temperature measured at the same time every day? We have about 30 years of good temperature data because of computer controlled data aquisition systems which record in real time and give RELIABLE data. Everything else is bunk. I think you should show your support by selling your car and either walking or riding your bike to work. I will wave to you as I pass by in my SUV.

I’m blasting all my lights on 8:00 PST. Porch lights, kitchen lights, T.V.’s, computers, you name it, everything is on. My friends and I will be BBQing in my yard sporting every light so bright, music blasting, cooking with non-vegan products. Yes, I belong to PETA (People Eating Tasty Animals).
Our kids learn that light attracts life and happliness, in darkness….attracts sadness.

I am happy to be human - except when I see how many self-serving members of the race are out there. We share this fantastic planet with many other beings. Earth Hour is not a miraculous saving of the planet. It is meant to be a miniscule moment of accepting responsibility for the incredibly comfortable lives we live - particularly here in the US. We are so very lucky - and so very wasteful. Rather than being proud of how much crap we can own or how much fuel we can burn, why not take 1 hour out of life and to try to understand how we affect not only the lives of those close to us, but also the amazing diversity of life that is just trying to get by on the planet. I’ve lived near the world’s largest watershed my entire life, and all I can see is that the more we humans ignore the impact our daily habits have on nature, the more ugly, dirty, toxic the air, water, soil becomes. Why is this something to cheer? Why is this the kind of planet we would want to leave for our children and their children?

And I also think those who are so ignorant to not actually know the science behind climate change should not try to make comments.

From Jeff

“It is incredible that people are arrogant enough to think that man has an effect on global climate. It is rediculous that people use 200 years of weather data to determine patterns for a world that has been around for billions of years.”

Firstly, we have over 400,000 years of climate data due to ice cores. And in those 400,000 years, CO2 levels Have never EVER been as high as they are now. So trying to make a comment such as you did only proves how naive you are on the topic.

The Mrs. and I heard about this and when the 8:00 hour rolled around, we went all through the house turning on all of the inside lights as well as front and rear porch lights. Let us be a light on a hillside to those who “are in the dark”. Let Freedom Ring, the motto from my ship, USS Independence CVA-62, and may it ring loud and long!

Question: What caused the last Ice Age since there were no humans on the planet?

This is all just a money making scheme. I will repeat from a previous post that there are naturalling occuring things that could wipe us out, but since no one can make $$$$$ from the eruption of the super volcano under Yellowstone, from the asteroid that will hit Earth someday, the next tsunami or hurricane, they are being overlooked.

Companies WILL however make gazillions from the special light bulbs that will be mandatory in a few years, gas, cars, “carbon credits” and any other ridiculous thing Al Gore and his posse can dream up to “save” the environment from a made up condition.

This is a tremendous first step of something that we should done far ago, but never is to late and beginning we will achieve the goal of saving our planet and therefore us assuring humanity existence on earth. The next step is to give it a look at Costa Rica and learn how to protect the earth natural resources, combining this steps and recycling we will get it done. Costa Rica is very close of the world and it shows how a human must respect nature rules. Visiting http://www.solidamerica.com you will get a better look, our web is the front door to Costa Rica and the world. we invite the world to live it with us.
