Not What the Dr. Ordered.
For those worried about the security of their medical information, a validation for their concerns. Many complain about the digitization of records on the web and computers at so-called secure locations. Well, that is not working so well here in Southern California, especially with the price of information to paparazzi skyrocketing. We have heard stories of hundreds of thousands of dollars being offered for information and now this. The nationally recognized UCLA Medical Center needs a remedy of its own. Just weeks after multiple employees were fired for looking at the confidential records of pop star Brittany Spears, Hospital Administrators admit a female employee accessed the confidential records of 61 patients last year, including at least 32 Hollywood stars and politicians like California first lady Maria Shriver and cancer survivor Farah Fawcett. IN A RELEASE TO FOX NEWS, HOSPITAL LEADERS SAY IN PART, “We continue to take steps to improve security systems designed to preclude access by unauthorized individuals, while also ensuring that properly assigned medical personnel can quickly retrieve the information required for emergency or other treatment decisions.” What do you think about all of this?
Adam…
#1..I think Hipaa is a crock. It did nothing more than create more paper trail jobs. And really has caused much confusion within the medical arena.
#2..many (not all) people can be bought with a price. I would like to think/say, I can not. But I also don’t hold info that others want. (You pretty much know the value of my knowledge! haha)
Who knows what we would do. Employers have no way of screening for morals when hiring.
Sounds to me like its another proven fact that the so called paparazzi needs to be held accountable.
They are trying (and so far failing at great expense) to create a national database of medical records here. We will probably get many problems just like this one if they ever succed.
Traditionally, all doctors and staff were bound by the ethical and legal rules of privacy and confidentiality and a patient’s personal information was only disclosed for primary purposes which directly related to their on-going health care. Traditionally, there could be no deviation from these rules as “legislation safeguards these rights” and considerable penalties were to be applied. One’s medical record is a confidential document
Obviously, this is not the case. In the above, the employees were fired. Anything else going to happen to these individuals? This is a clear case of breach of confidentiality…. and these penalties need to be applied!!!!
(this is what I think about this!)
so what were in Britney’s records?
Medical records and information contained in medical records
This is why there are statutes- (This one is for Arizona–)
A.R.S. 12-2292. Confidentiality of medical records and payment records
A. Unless otherwise provided by law, all medical records and payment records, and the information contained in medical records and payment records, are privileged and confidential. A health care provider may only disclose that part or all of a patient’s medical records and payment records as authorized by state or federal law or written authorization signed by the patient or the patient’s health care decision maker.
B. This article does not limit the effect of any other federal or state law governing the confidentiality of medical records and payment records.
Max-
I left you a message #9– Shaffer–
Tamera-
I saw this afternoon while I was over at a friend’s house who had the Family channel on, Sister, Sister– so I sat down with the kids and watched you and your siter Tia- this episode was when Tia got a job at the bookstore-Café– and your dad, Ray, had a new girlfriend, you didn’t like (I am with you. I didn’t like her either– what a phony! LOL In subsequent shows, I hope he dumped her! LOL) Anyhow, you girls were cute. I enjoyed my half hour of Family Channel. I guess the show runs two at a time. I had to leave so I didn’t get to see the full second half of the other half hour- But I did get to see as far as when Tia found out she was not getting paid as much as the male employee at this job who was hired at the same time as she was to do the same job- She was doing her toenails, as this is something she did when upset!
And then I had to leave–
Adam–
Safe in Belfast thread needs some help!
I found some new news for the Venezuela thread and a funny article from USA Today about Hillary being related to Jolie and Obama to Pitt, I posted on the political thread —
LDG–
I am headed out of here– hope to see you tomorrow, our mornings,— the Shaffer thread? #9– I need my lessons–
xxxxx
I definately do not like the invasion of privacy and certainly do not want to know what celebrity medical conditions are. I would be horrified to be a celebrity and have that happen to me so I wouldn’t wish that on anyone else. As juicy as the story line could be, it’s not worth seeing another person embarrassed.
It’s just a shame that there’s a market for this type of information.
Susan… political thread? We have a new one?
KT—
Happy Birthday!!!!!
Yes– there has been a thread waiting for you– see how low the numbers are since you have been absent!!!
LOL–
WoooHoooo !!! Thank You Susan!
I found the political thread… but I need time to think about who I am going to bash… I have to make this a good one hahahahaha
You would think that the big Red Flag would have clued me in but it went right over my head. Adam always does get the best graphics.
eerrr Susan, where’d ya go? And where’s Adam?
I have’t seen many news stories lately and barely heard what was happening to Farrah and a couple of other celebrities. I understand that it’s beneficial for celebrities to be in the news, sometimes, but the paparazzi just takes things too far sometimes. Then there’s always the overkill factor. I have a lot more respect for celebrities that manage to stay out of contoversy, unless it’s of no fault of their own. But this crap about the medical records goes way beyond that, a big no-no and Americans better not buy any magazines with that info inside of it. What a darn shame.
I’m talking to myself.
ok I’m going to hop around our…. errr Adam’s blog…. and see what else is posted.
KT–
I was in your site leaving you a message–
I am out of here as I have to finish up some paper work here to submit to Ken’s case manager by the end of this week–
I was talking to myself too for the last two hours– jumping from thread to thread!! LOL
Have a good birthday!!! A few people are on vacation! About five of the bloggers — Adam took a vacation and everyone else is now following suit-
Have a good night!!!
and have some birthday cake!
P.S. Message to you in your site is in the video’s–
Ok… thank you Susan!!!
big problemo with the drill
no one heard the siren …… alot of people in J-town and central Israel didnt hear it …. if this wasnt a drill and we were in fact under attack it wouldnt be good…. the sirens werent loud enough…
on a positive note
THEY CLEANED THE BOMB SHELTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Regarding the medical records privacy, or lack there of, brings up the age old question of ‘who do those records belong to’?………The patient, or the medical facility that is treating the patient.
Britney’s medical records, BTW, showed that she suffered from from a cold………I can’t reveal where the cold was, but, I think for those of you that have seen her in her evening atire (or lack there of) will have some sort of reasonable idea of what area suffered the ill effects……
I wonder if Bill O’s medical records show that he indeed suffers from PHS (Pointed Head Syndrome) aka,”pinhead desease”
Avi……….does Israel have a emergency broadcasting system where they use the airwaves ( radio/tv ) to sound an alarm in conjunction with the sirens?
As you may remember, we have that system here in the US (major cities, anyway)……….That, at least, warns people that “something” bad is coming. The problem here is that no one will know where to go if there is an actual emergency. One recent poll of the “average” citizen in the DC area showed that they had no idea where, or who to go, in case of an emergency……….If that’s true, then maybe it’s just as well that we don’t hear the warnings either.
John,
I think so… but when your in class the tv isnt on ( there isnt one) or is there a radio and the same goes for those at work even the people at Parliament didnt hear it …..
well yes someone will probably come into your class and say goo go goo but what if they dont ?
hopefully they will fix the problemo ….
Susan: Did you get the email i sent last night?
I object to the “free time” comment….
but even so……
ask and you shall recieve Adam…..is this the one you wanted?

that was fun adam, going through the “old stuff”.
I still wonder about Tom (retired NWS)…he sounded so ill at thanksgiving time and we’ve never heard from him again.
Many have come and gone with different stories, maybe they just read and don’t post. And then there are those of us that have been here for what seems like “forever”! *L*
We definilty have gotten “braver”, if thats what you call it.
I asked you a question a long time ago…and i’m going to ask again….
Spencer Thornburg @ San Diego NBC…. I was curious if you knew him. He’s a photo jounalist if i remember right. He’s my cousin, i’ve never met him because of the many miles in between.
Patty: are you celebrating today?
Avi ~ That’s not good about the drill. I hope they get things squared away soon. I am glad they cleaned out the shelters!
Susan ~ when reading your post to Tamera I realized that I remember watching that particular episode a long time ago!
Everyone in KS is a Jayhawk today!!!
http://www2.ljworld.com/photos/galleries/2008/apr/07/fans_watch_championship_downtown_lawrence/
I almost called in to take the day off. he he
Who can go to sleep after a game like that???
Was a terrific game to watch, would have loved to have been in the stands. The excitment would have been electric!!
The only thing i would rant on is the officials “non call” of the evident technicals x 2. Those were seriously bad officiating. But it doesnt matter now, its done.
Avi…do you have scattered sirens like we do? We have them posted all over the county ….can be heard for miles.
John, i had to argue with a hospital to get a copy of my records one time. They didnt want to give them. Or she didnt want to take the time to copy them. She tried to tell me i couldnt have them. I simpley asked her….WHO”S records are they???? Eventually i got what i needed, but it wasnt easy. I had to go to a supervisor.
Patty: Who benefited from the non-calls?
Max…Memphis did on both
Speaking of Tamera…we haven’t heard from her for a while.
Adam…did you bring her back to the states? *L*
and you didnt tell us….how many “travel troubles” did you have on vacation?
Patty: well at least KS won then
And Tamera told me she didn’t blog anymore because she didn’t want to get Adam into any trouble.
thats too bad she feels that way max, she’s seems so sweet.
Patty: she was amazed that Adam’s mother had started going on the blog. Maybe she’ll be back sometime
Food for thought………Adam can only get in trouble if he’s causing trouble. What’s Tamera hiding?…………Hmmmmmmmmm
John…*L*
Mom Housley fits right in
I think it is so cool that she showed up!!!
Adam…does it make you “nervous” that mom is here? *giggle*
OK..now i sound/look like susan is here! *L*
I better go work a bit.
Tap on the screen if i miss anything! ha ha
Question
If our medical records are to be kept confidential and some body steals the info and releases it for public view say on CNN (heh heh) and CNN broadcasts the private info out into the air waves can CNN be prosecuted? Can the newspapers, magazines and other irresposible media be prosecuted under federal law? Would anybody here - most of whom are rather (not Dan) coservative think or fear that the Media’s First Ammendment rights where being violated?
Avi
I quess that the govts. world wide are all the same…inept.
This is one of those topics I can only consider vicariously. You see, in Japan the records of any medical activity are the property of the institution not the patient. They are also legally confidential except for review by the national health insurance (a government-run agency). If push comes to shove, you need a court order to see your own records. (note: most doctors would never let it go that far, as they are also bound professionally to the “right” of informed consent now. But a few malpractice cases have been really ugly, and these make the headlines.)
@Retread
re: publicizing private records in the U.S. — isn’t that a civil suit, not a criminal matter (like the theft would be)?
@Patty
Off-topic but important:
Congrats to your miracle Jayhawks. Just heard the replay of them going to overtime on the radio here. wow!
Adam—
Looks like Patty beat me to looking for the comment. And Patty, it is fun to go back to the older posts to see how Adam’s blog has evolved. What a difference from last year to present day- I also saw how your team won– Yea!!!! DBacks ended up winning too. Davis goes in for his surgery Thursday. Thyroid cancer– Left handed pitcher –
Max– I will have to go check out my email side– I haven’t been over there yet- I had asked the question way back if Tamera would get into trouble for blogging. Why would she get into trouble though? Sort of silly- I would think the context of the message would be what one would watch for- as in some of the very offensive comments which are made in someone else’s blog-
Becky– Sister, Sister is a cute show. It sort of reminds me of the Patty Duke Show. (In the sense it is a wholesome show) Did you notice how Tamera calls her divorced parents in the show by their first names as to Tia calling me them mom and dad. My kids call me Susan so I picked up on this. And my cousins my uncle (their dad) by his first name too.
And back to medical records– I posted awhile back how a teacher received boxes of medical records to be used for scrap paper. The boxes came from Phx. and ended up in Nevada– when the teacher opened up these boxes, they were medical records. One lady whose mom’s records were in one of these boxes was going to sue. I wonder what happened here?
Did anyone pick up on how Adam spelled Britney’s name? I laughed when I saw it because the subliminal message in this to me was he doesn’t not follow her around as some other medias- He has better things to do than wonder what her latest antics are. KUDOS!
VENEZUELA– Hugo has expanded his hit list-
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,347910,00.html
Going back to Patty’s post- the first one–(protecting data in the workplace)- HIPPA
Certain federal and state laws apply to data-privacy protections. On the federal side, the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLB) and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) carry the most weight.
And this is what is supposed to be-
California employers not in compliance with existing privacy laws expose themselves to fines and possible litigation from customers or employees whose confidential information is compromised.
Susan: I think she was just shy and afraid to say something stupid.
She asked if i’d ever watched the show and i told her i’d seen one episode but i had no idea what was going on. I described it and it turned out it was the last episode ever, no wonder i didn’t understand.
speaking of britt any….*G*
remember this Adam and John???

Hey Adam,
Greta requested that we come over here and bother you for a while on your blog. Will you be sending us monthly royalty checks like she does for every time we post? Greta does this so that we fill up her blog and make her feel important. I guess it helps her with job security, or gives her something to do while her producers are hard at work figuring out what in the hell they’re going to put on the record now.
Just one request, please DON’T do anything on Brittney. Otherwise I’m never coming back.

John-
Trust me….You’ll hear nothing on this blog about Brittney, Lindsay, or anyone else that doesn’t likely know where Benin is on the map, let alone which continent!
Adam
LDG…was truly a miracle!
Id have bet money the other way in the last few minutes of regulation play.
Wow Patty is searching the archives–
Benin- Western Africa?
@Patty
“Id have bet money the other way …”
No joke. Lucky you are not a gambler, eh?
@Susan-AZ
A couple things for you over on Baghdad #9 from earlier ‘today’.
Patty………The question is……….Has anyone ” Benin Britney or Lindsay ” ?
Susan……..No, Benin Europe though.
Its raining and i am bored.
and john….*shaking head* there ya go again, getting in trouble!
@Susan-AZ
“Benin- Western Africa?”
Of course you had to know:
* Our good host has written about you here.
* He said we “…would hear nothing of … doesn’t likely know where Benin is …”
* Thus, Susan-AZ likely knows where Benin is.
((grin))
The Republic of Benin?
My map shows right by Nigeria-
where is Kathy in Texas? San Angelo is like having a good old time with what just happened at that compound/
I didn’t like how one reporter said Arizona wears blinders when it comes to these polygamy compounds- (not on Fox) Now I am going to have to go find these and bust them!
LDG– I am headed to #9–
(ginning– thank you LDG– Of course I would go find out where Benin is. I am reading about it now) Yayi Boni is the President- Republic under a multiparty democratic rule.
I am off to number nine!
A new thread! (thank you Patty for informing!)
I shall now be in two places at the same time, neither here.
uh oh…*hiding from susan!*

Cough! She has the advantage–our time zones are different!
Susan….love ya! *giggling*
ADAM…. my question at the bottom of my 10:45 post???
Patty–
love you too– more than Adam now!
Wowie– checked Greta’s blog– Howard K. Stern has caused a mass blogging event–
getting over here to the medical records– I wonder what Anna’s and Daniel’s medical records are? Any way of finding out?
Y’All:
An unfortunate example of why FISA (G W Bush’s) listening to phone calls only those ‘going overseas.’ The State Dept. passports easy access to claimed ’secure data.’ UCLA Hospital ignoring Hiipa data laws and access to ’secure data.’ In addition, these are only the ones we hear about. Ergo, what else is searched, browsed, shared and disclosed? If it is so easy to see John McCain’s passport data and medical records for the first Lady of CA. et al., the greatest impediment to discovering terrorists is the illusion of security. The Fourth Amendment declares me, the ordinary citizen, to be secure in my data, papers and so forth. Now, all of us ‘white hat’ good guys are to be searched while criminals are merely detoured on their ne’er-do-well mission.
