Rob Lowe’s Nanny Problem

Rob Lowe
(AP)

The latest celebrity blog isn’t just about the stars, it is actually written by a star.

Rob Lowe has written a blog saying he’s the victim of an extortion plot by a former nanny. Lowe claims the nanny is asking him and his wife to give her $1.5 million dollars, or as he puts is, “she will accuse us both of a vicious laundry list of false terribles.”

The blog was posted Monday afternoon on HuffingtonPost.com, and by Tuesday morning, more than 250 people had commented on it.

Some comments are funny:

“I too was badly abused by Rob Lowe. He left the West Wing well before the show was canceled and the series was much the poorer for him being gone.”

Others are sympathetic to Lowe:

“Best of luck to you and your family Rob, this is a horrible situation to be in.”

Some Huffington Post readers are skeptical of Lowe’s claims:

“Excuse me if I don’t seem concerned, Rob. I would love to have a staff to take care of my kids, cooking, cleaning, etc, and to even fly around with me to take care of unwanted tasks. It would also be nice to have 1.5 million dollars extra in the bank to take care of such pesky people, or at least to have the money to hire high-powered lawyers that will crush them even if they are telling the truth.”

Lowe’s publicist Alan Neirob tells me he has no further comment on the Huffington Post blog.

Lowe isn’t just battling in the blogosphere, he’s also gearing up for combat in the courtroom.

The AP confirms that Lowe and his wife filed a lawsuit Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court, seeking $1,000,000 or more in damages, and charging Laura Boyce with violating a confidentiality agreement, defamation and infliction of emotional distress on Lowe and his family. One note: the woman mentioned in Lowe’s blog is named “Jess,” while the woman named in the lawsuit is Laura Boyce. We’re working now to determine whether the blog and court case are referring to one employee, or more than one.

This battle comes 20 years after Lowe’s 1988 sex scandal, in which he was caught on tape having sex with a teenager.

I’ll be discussing this case during America’s Newsroom this morning at 10:50 a.m. Tune in and see what you think!

While it is obviously more difficult to feel sorry for an incredibly wealthy celebrity, I applaud Rob and his family for taking charge in this matter and not letting someone take advantage of his financial situation. Regardless of the amount of money or power someone has, it is always nice to see the scammer get called out. These people bank on the fact that the person or people they are extorting will do anything to avoid the bad publicity. With Rob bringing it to the light before she can, she us now left with no recourse and will hopefully never work with children again. This is all, of course, assuming these alleged accusations are indeed false. I will admit that I have been a longtime admirer of Rob’s work, so I am hoping they are.

Way to make a stand Rob. This type of action by your nanny is not only unethical but it is criminal and criminals like this belong behind bars.

Kudos to Rob and his wife for fighting back. My husband and I were victims several years ago of a sexual harassment suit against our business based on completely false claims. Just like Mr. Lowe, my husband and I neither condone nor practice harrassing or discriminating behavior in our workplace. But these sorts of claims– just like other abuse claims– often rest on nothing more than the claims of the victim alone. And the way our courts are structured, no other corroboration is required to get these baseless suits beyond the point of summary judgment, the critical point at which most civil lawsuits settle and the damage is already done to the defendant, financially and emotionally.

We are in the restaurant industry which, like domestic and other service industries, draws from a labor pool who are often young, lacking life experience, and coming from unstable home environments, where qualities such as truthfulness, honesty, loyalty and respect are not valued, much less discussed… Combine this with our media-blitzed society which makes everyone feel entitled and the person who puts in an honest days work feel like a sucker for not figuring a way to quickie millionairism…

And add the final and most abhorrent layer of all –defense attorneys who are quite happy to rack up the billable hours to “defend” a client, but whose true loyalties are to the club to which they belong — the legal system (other distinguished members include opposing counsel, presiding judges and courthouse clerks). To them, what’s 30 or 40K in legal fees and a settlement or judgement in the tens of thousands, I mean it’s not like it’s your life on the line, right? Or on the other side are plaintiff’s attorneys who work pro bono and decide the merits of a case not on corrobarative facts, but on the winnibility (extortability) of a case.

I expect Mr. Lowe and his wife have attorneys who are responsive to their wishes and will fight hard for them, based on the firm’s expectation of a long future of billable hours from the Lowe family. But for people like my husband and myself who are small business owners, this kind of legal counsel is just not available.

Our experience has been that attorneys on both sides have no concern or respect for the truth and are too lazy to even conduct a reasonably competent case for their clients.

Laziness, disregard for truth and honesty, lack of respect for others, misplaced loyalties… no wonder these plaintiff’s and their lawyers find each other so easily and with such detrimental effect to our society.

There is no question that civil courts serve a necessary role in our society and that there are many, many plaintiff’s who deserve access to the justice they provide. But if we really want our civil courts to be fair and just, we have to take the decision of which cases are even filed out of the hands of self-serving individual attorneys and put it in the hands of a body which values truth and judges the merits of the plaintiff’s case on something more than the viability of future financial reward for the plaintiff’s attorney.

How do any of you commenters know if Lowe is innocent or guilty, if the employee is truthful or a scammer?

Just because you personally might have been unjustly accused of something, does not mean EVERYONE who is accused of wrongdoing is likewise innocent.

This kind of limited thinking is why I do not believe in the jury system. People cannot get past their own prejudices and personal experiences to objectively assess a circumstance.

By the way, if Rob was caught having sex with a teenager…does he now have to register as a sex offender? I know of someone else who had a sex offense back in the 80’s and he has to register even now so if it is good enough for the common man…then how about Mr Lowe?

How to solve Rob Lowes *nanny problems*. Don’t hire one! Maybe Mr. Lowe and his wife should learn to take care of their own children, clean their own clothes and cook their own food like the rest of the normal world. Oh honey let’s have children for someone else to raise! I suppose some feel that because they are wealthy they become immune from raising the children that they in fact make the consious decision to have. 1.35 million children experience homelessness in the United States of America, over 300,000 children are sexually abused annually in the United States, etc, etc,….but let us discuss Mr. Lowes “nanny problems*. His private nanny issues clearly take precedence over the real issues that our country faces. Well, I for one feel no sympathy for Mr. Lowe, and I would certainly hope that if Mr. Lowe does in fact win this suit that he would put the moneys made (instant lottery) towards something of significance!

Just a reminder of a segment of Rob Lowe’s past taken from Wikipedia. Maybe he has had a relapse.

Sex tape controversy

In 1988, Lowe was involved in a sex scandal over a videotape of him having sex with two females, one of whom was sixteen, in Atlanta while attending the 1988 Democratic National Convention. Lowe has asserted that he did not know that the second girl was underaged, and it was confirmed that the two had met at a bar, which the girl entered by lying about her age.

Lowe’s career was damaged by the scandal, and he later entered a rehabilitation clinic for alcohol and sex addiction. Eventually, his career rebounded, and Lowe mocked his own behavior during two post-scandal appearances as host of Saturday Night Live.

Did anyone stop to wonder why this girl waited so many YEARS to come forward and say she was sexually harrassed? Please - give me a break. The excuses of “I thought it would get better”, “I needed the money” and then her idiot of a lawyer, Allred, says, “And she left without having another job”! How many of you ou there would stand for that crap from someone for what, 5+ years? I don’t have an opinion of Rob Lowe one way or the other but my opinion of this girl is shyster! And could she be on television with anymore of a smart-aleck smirk on her face?!?! Come on people, USE YOUR HEAD! Someone doesn’t take this crap for this long. I don’t hear her saying they held her prisoner or is that next? What a disgusting scam!

She didn’t look too much like a victim of abuse on the Today Show. You couldn’t wipe that smile off her face.

i agree—if you dont want to raise your own kids, dont have any. allowing a perfect stranger into my home, at all hours, entrusting the care of my kids, allowing them to see every minute of my familys’ private life would be the last thing i would sign up for. it opens a huge can of worms, either to potential exposure of unsavory behaviors or to false allegations. if he is innocent, then he should fight back. surely if this had been happening she was either a willing participant (maybe with a future lawsuit or blackmail in mind all along) or she woudl have certainly left. further, there would have to be a witness or two to substantiate SOME part of all this, if its true.

Comment by Janice

I don’t know about anyone else out there - but if I’d been sexually assaulted (as she was if he touched her) by my employer I’d be mad as heck…and certainly not giggling about it on the air on the Today show.

If I were serious about the matter - since it’s a serious accusation I certainly wouldn’t be handling it in the media which obviously makes her lack credibility.

And I certainly wouldn’t pose for a spread in People Magazine just a few days later.

Whether or not either party is guilty of whatever - she’s certainly not handling the “publicity” of her case in a way that would make me take her side. When you put yourself out there like that don’t expect to not be judged in the Court of Public Opinion.

Comment by Tom Morgan

Come on people—you know this isn’t true! I don’t care about Rob Lowe’s past. We all have a past. That doesn’t mean he’s doing anything like that today. What it does mean is this money-greedy nanny devised a way to get some of Mr. Lowe’s income because he has a past. She’s smart!

Only he’s smarter. Kudos to you, Mr. Lowe Fight back–don’t give in to blackmail. Case closed!

Comment by Kathleen

My suggestion is that the Lowes begin to take care of their own children. Hire temporary agencies to clean the house and Gardening. Where there is smoke there is usually fire. But, there are no public facts that I am aware that indicate abuse - just that the nanny was fired and she was emotionally hurt by the dismissal.
