Just Hang A Sign
As many of you know, we have interviewed the Mexican Attorney General on two occasions in the past 6 months or so. He has always expressed the concern about drug cartels and the power of corruption in the northern border areas. I got the impression as President Calderon and his administration battles to win back security in the country, the last frontier of the fight will be the northern border areas where violence continues to rage. Now we see the very clear example that the cartels are snubbing their nose at the Mexican President. According to the AP, hitmen tied to Mexico’s Gulf cartel appear to be boldly seeking recruits by posting help-wanted signs in the border city of Nuevo Laredo, including a giant banner hung across a thoroughfare. I have been to Nuevo Laredo in the past and the place isn’t one of the safest.
The banner appeared over the weekend and said “Operative group ‘The Zetas’ wants you, soldier or ex-soldier. We offer a good salary, food and benefits for your family. Don’t suffer anymore mistreatment and don’t go hungry.” While some people are criticizing Calderon, using this example, I take a different view. I think the Mexican government is making some headway and now cartels are having to fight and now even advertise to gain recruits. By the way, I took this picture during our undercover operation with Mexican drug officials. This man is a drug lookout.

Very interesting article - however, it does seem odd that a drug lookout during an undercover operation would be standing in front of a police vehicle. Would that not deter the drug dealers from coming up to him???
Adam Hard to believe there would be a change in attitude in Mexico, but the majority of the people are not wealthy. So hopefully something is moving forward in their own country.
The must be pretty desperate to be so openly trying to recruit, since they regualr sources may have dried up.
Adam, what is the Dental and Vision plan like? How much vacation time do you get with them? did you ask?
I know, it’s the NY Times………but this was out several days ago…….

the website technopatriots.com that gave your the above video has an interesting story. “2 people onthe FBI Terrorist watch list were arrested in Arizona coming up from Mexico.”
Two men on the “National terrorist watch list” have been turned over to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) following a traffic stop, accourding to Patagonia Police Cheif Ed Dobbertin.
Dobbertin said that on Feb. 12, between 9-9:30 a.m., he was patrolling State Route 82 near milepost 28 when pulled over a car for a traffic violation. “There were just indicators that something wasn’t right with the vehicle,” said Dobbertin, “We searched. My dog indicated that there was the presence of narcotic odor in the vehicle” he added.
BP ASSISTED
Dobbertin said he then called Border Patrol to assist.
“They (the driver and passenger) were transported back when they found out that they were on the national terrorist watch list, and the investigation was turned over to Border Patrol and the FBI, “said Dobbertin. He added that the men were of middle eastern decent and had been residing in Sierra Vista, Az
“They were on the list because apparently they were non-citizens going to Nogales to basically bond out an individual - their associate - who was also a non-citizen that had been stopped the night before by Customs and Border Protection agents for entering the United States illegally.” said Dobbertin.
The Border patrol did no return calls made by the Weekly Bulletin by press time
that website is kind of cool, You can sign up and then patrol the border from your very own home and then if you see some illegals jumping the border you can call the Border Patrol and tell them the location. This is way cool!

Here is an article from 2005– about the Los Zetas- And how these guys started– alarming isn’t it?
KPHO | May 19, 2005
They were the elite “special forces” of the Mexican military, trained in the U.S. at the School of the Americas at Fort Benning, Georgia and sent to “wipe out” one of the most powerful Mexican drug cartels.
But these soldiers deserted and became the muscle for the very cartel they were supposed to destroy.
According to this Department of Justice “Intelligence Bulletin” obtained by the 5i-Team, these rogue commandos now known as “Los Zetas” may be heading our way.

US-trained Mexican commandos pose threat to authorities
The normally busy streets and busy stores in Nogales Sonora have been a little less bustling lately. Caesar Fierro says, “It’s been slow this year.” Caesar Fierro says his empty store is the result of rumors about a drug war. Tourists are scared.
Out on the streets, other vendors play down the speculation the Mexican Commandos are already here. Tony Marques says, “The Zetas.. I don’t think they’ll operate here you know.” Marques says, “Maybe in the big cities like Juarez , Tijuana , now you’re talking seriously like that.”
The Intelligence Bulletin we obtained says the Zetas are responsible for hundreds of violent drug-related murders. It says they’ve executed journalists, murdered people in Dallas, McAllen and Laredo, Texas. They even detained two DEA agents and recently they’ve shot at Border Patrol agents. At the Arizona border with Mexico agents are already seeing a major increase in violence.
Jose Garza says, “Last year we had documented only nine shootings against our agents. This year we’re up to about 18 shootings already.”
Agent Jose Garza says his agents have seen no direct evidence the Zetas are responsible for the shootings here, but as far back as three-years ago, the Zeta-like tactics started to appear.
In March of 2002, U.S. Customs agents were involved in a shootout south of Phoenix with an enemy they had not seen before. Equipped with automatic weapons, body armor, and state-of-the-art communications, in a word - it looked “military.”
Kyle Barnette says, “I’d be lying if I didn’t say it concerns us.”
Now, as a drug war between the Gulf Cartel to the east and the Tijuana Cartel to the west starts to heat up, the Justice Department bulletin warns: “The violence will spill over the Mexican border into the United States and law enforcement agencies in Texas, Arizona and Southern California can expect to encounter Los Zetas in the coming months.”

U.S. officials say Zetas (Mexican Commandos) have killed in Texas
ALI | February 20, 2005
Investigators say the feared band of ex-military elite forces are operating in Texas and other parts of the United States. A team of rogue Mexican commandos blamed for dozens of killings along the U.S.-Mexico border has carried out at least three drug-related slayings in Dallas, a sign that the group is extending its deadly operations into U.S. cities, two U.S. law enforcement officials say.
Read the latest headlines about illegal immigration.
The men are known as the Zetas, former members of the Mexican army who defected to Mexico’s so-called Gulf drug cartel in the late 1990s.
“These guys run like a military,” said Arturo A. Fontes, an FBI special investigator for border violence based in Laredo, in south Texas. “They have their hands in everything and they have eyes and ears everywhere. I’ve seen how they work, and they’re good at what they do. They’re an impressive bunch of ruthless criminals.” Dallas and federal officials said that since late 2003 eight to 10 members of the Zetas have been operating in north Texas, maintaining a “shadowy existence” and sometimes hiring Texas criminal gangs, including the Mexican Mafia and Texas Syndicate, for contract killings. The Texas Syndicate is a prison gang that authorities blame for several murders statewide.
The Zetas’ activities in North Texas were described in interviews with two U.S. federal law enforcement agents, two former Drug Enforcement Administration officials, a former Dallas undercover narcotics officer and two undercover informants. “We’re aware of the Zetas’ threat to U.S. cities, and we consider it a growing threat,” said Johnny Santana, a criminal investigator for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Office of the Inspector General. “We’re conducting investigations into several cases statewide to establish evidence. We still don’t have those links yet, but the telltale signs are there, and they point to the Zetas.” The Zetas’ presence in Dallas represents a sharp departure from standard practice for Mexican cartels, which traditionally have kept a low profile on U.S. soil and have sought to avoid confrontations with U.S. law enforcement.
The Zetas, who are accused off carrying out killings and acting as drug couriers for the cartel, are regarded by U.S. law enforcement officials as expert assassins who are especially worrisome because of their elite military training and penchant for using AR-15 and AK-47 assault rifles.
“The Zetas are bold, ruthless and won’t think twice about pulling the trigger on a cop or anyone else who gets in their way,” said the former Dallas narcotics officer, who asked not to be identified.
“And they like to take care of business themselves or, when forced to, hire their own assassin.” Gil Cerda, a spokesman for the Dallas Police Department narcotics division, said he had personally not heard of the group and could not comment.
RISK DOWNPLAYED
Mexican authorities have downplayed the threat posed by the Zetas, saying that a major government crackdown has left the group leaderless and on the run.
José Luis Santiago Vasconcelos, the country’s deputy attorney general for organized crime, suggested that many of the crimes attributed to the group may have been committed by outsiders emulating the group’s violent tactics. “There are many Zetas wannabes,” he said.
Still, Fontes of the FBI and other U.S. law enforcement officials said the former commandos are both a potent threat and are bolder and more ambitious than their predecessors.
They are extending their reach and violence beyond the Nuevo Laredo-to-Matamoros border area into Dallas, Houston and San Antonio, where they blend into burgeoning Mexican immigrant communities, state and federal officials said.
The group may have ventured as far as Nashville, Tenn., and Atlanta, Ga., the officials said.
“These guys are anything but wannabes,” said Fontes. “They’re the real thing, and they’re a threat to law enforcement officers on both sides of the border.” Dallas and federal law enforcement officials have linked murders and drug violence in Dallas during the past 18 months to cocaine and marijuana trafficking in Laredo and Nuevo Laredo, a base of operations for the Zetas. Dallas and federal investigators have blamed at least three Dallas killings on the Zetas, and some officials said that more than a dozen violent incidents can be attributed to the group.
Federal and Dallas authorities have blamed the following incidents on the Zetas: At 1:20 a.m. on Dec. 5, a gunman stepped out of a red sports car with a semi-automatic weapon and opened fire on three suspected drug traffickers as they played pool in the open garage of a home in the 5100 block of Mimi Court in Oak Cliff. Christian Alejandro Meza, 26, alias Juan Antonio Ortega, a parolee from Wichita, Kan., who was wanted on weapons charges, died of multiple wounds to the abdomen. Two other men were severely wounded and are being held on drug charges.
Law enforcement officials said the men were attacked because they allegedly worked for a rival drug lord, Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, who escaped from the maximumsecurity Puente Grande prison in Jalisco state in January 2001, hidden in a laundry truck.
RIVAL GANG FIGHT
Guzmán is reputed to be a leader of the Juárez cartel, a rival of the Zetas’ employer, the Gulf cartel, and is wanted in the United States, said Fontes, the FBI agent.
Dallas police seized 45 kilos of cocaine said to have been smuggled from Monterrey with a street value of US2.5 million and about 300,000 in cash from the Oak Cliff home and one next to it.
“The hit was a message to Chapo Guzmán, and the killer is believed to have been a Zetas member,” said the former Dallas narcotics officer. “The gunman was very meticulous, didn’t shoot a lot because he didn’t have to.” The case is under investigation, and the gunman remains at large.
On Sept. 28, police found the bodies of Mathew Frank Geisler and Brandon Gallegos, both 19 and from Laredo, in a burning 1996 Chevrolet Tahoe in a field near the corner of Morrell Avenue and Sargent Road, in the Cadillac Heights area of Oak Cliff. Both men had been shot, and the case probably involved drugs, according to police accounts.
A federal investigator said that “without a doubt” both incidents were carried out by the Zetas.
“We’re seeing an alarming number of incidents involving the same type of violence that’s become all too common in Mexico, right here in Dallas,” said the former Dallas narcotics officer. “We’re seeing executionstyle murders, burned bodies and outright mayhem. It’s like the battles being waged in Mexico for turf have reached Dallas.”
With this banner going on, to attract the poor and indigent, for their propanga thinking, is very scary!!!!

Regardless: As long as Zetas name comes up– I am not comfortable! This is a very dangerous organization!
Although these senseless murders along (and across) our borders by these drug cartels need to be addressed by both the US and Mexican govrnments, let us not forget the root cause for these cartels existence in the first place……………demand.
As long as there is going to be a demand in the USA for the products that these cartels are offering the cartels will be there. Their names may change, their personel may change, their tactics may change………but they will always be there to supply the US demand their products. It is just too lucrative a business for them not to engage in this “trade”.
Remember, the best way to kill a snake is to cut off it’s head…………The head, in this case, is inside the USA, IMO. Kill the demand and you will kill the cartels.
@Susan-AZ
An organization of the quality of Los Zetas does not recruit on the street, or by banners. Not for what they really do. The gangs that actually do the drug-running and selling, sure, they need common criminals.
Do be wary of one common oversimplification when talking of organized crime: “senseless killings” are rarely senseless when considered in how the organizations relate to one another and to civil authority. Immoral, illegal, brutal, yes… senseless, almost never.
@John
same caveat about “senseless” applies. That aside, you seem to be on track (IMO). The keys to defeating organized crime regarding commercial activities are usually: Reduce demand; Increase costs of activity. I always found it odd that in exotic activities (where what is sold by the criminals is rare or tracable, like Missiles or Diamonds) attacking the activity as close to the source as possible is optimal, but how utterly pointless it can be to attempt to do so to stop commercial quantity materials (like Handguns or most Drugs).
Taking the profit out of the activity (somehow) looks like the winning move.
…the devil of that, as always, is in the details.
http://michellemalkin.com/2008/04/19/hard-numbers-illegal-alien-drunk-drivers-in-north-carolina/
I think the cartels also try and create a demand, more that just that is needed.
Already there are programs to educate people about drugs, concentrate on dealers especially the pushers, and going after the plantations.
What is also needed is to make it more difficult to transport the drugs, mexico is a great place for drug runners, so they need to condentrate on gangs, like they are starting to do. But also, we need to disincentivise illegal immigration, because at the moment drug runners are hidden among the crowds, if there were no crowds the Boarder Patrol would have a much easier time finding drug runners.
People won’t be prepared to take the risk of smuggling drugs if there’s a 90% chance they will be caught, but they will if there is only a 10% chance of getting caught.
Ughh.. Mexico scares me….
to me … they are a “turd world country”…
Adam,
LDG told you yesterday but im having the same problems as him… foxnews.com takes forever to upload with all the advertising stuff….
@Max
Well said, especially the part about creating demand (yes, even Narco-criminals enjoy the advantages of modern Advertising).
A question, if I may:
“People won’t be prepared to take the risk of smuggling drugs if there’s a 90% chance they will be caught, but they will if there is only a 10% chance of getting caught.”
How does the real world example of North Korea being the #1 source of illegal drugs (mostly sitmulants), and bringing in what would be considered anywhere except the U.S. to be large amounts of the drugs, fit into that when Japan has absolutely Draconian anti-drug laws?
@Terri~Las Vegas
No slight to your stating your feelings, but is that just a gut-level fear, or are you actually feeling threatened? I am more than curious, if you please.

Yes- maybe so– the gophers–
Los Zetas– as organized crime are nothing but a bunch of murderers–
Demand– unfortunately, there is too much of this– and the drug traffic flow comes from many other parts of the world–
Avi–
Does your family put out a plate with the parsley, egg, etc? out on the table as the video shows? I had a Jewish roommate when I lived in Minnesota and I went to the sader but I don’t remember the plate being on the table–
LDG: it also depends how high the street value is i guess.
Unfortunately drug education programs rarely work. Granted, there will always be a certain percentage of the population that will be adicted to some type of narcotic, irregardless of education programs, rehab programs or stiff judicial penalties. However, statistics from public schools in the USA ( from polling students and drug related arrest statistics ) are showing an alarming increase in drug use. These school systems are suposed to be educating our youth on the dangers of drug abuse……..but it does not seem to be working. Or, at the very least, it is not decreasing the drug use……..thus not decreasing the demand.
One far fetched idea ( although not new ) is to legalize drug use……….leave it up to the individual to decide. Legalize it and tax the hell out of it . Similar to how alcohol (a drug) is handled by most societies today. We won’t alleviate the problem of drug abuse , but at least we will take the demand away from the drug cartels and the local street dealers.
Susan,
Thanks we just got back from Sedar at a family friend!…..
Did anyone notice when Bill Maher was appologizing for calling the Pope a nazi he kept making the ‘hail satan’ devil horns sign with his fingers?
He only made it when he was apollogizing.
They need to advertise for recruits because all their friends moved (illegally) to America.
Max, Don’t like Bill Maher…he’s a comedian in disguise…with an agenda. And I didn’t hear him say ‘I’m sorry’. All he did was qualify why he said what he said.
Hand jester…it figures.
Jen S: Yeah, he’s not very funny, but making the ‘hail satan’ sign when talking about the Pope seems to be him trying to stir up the pot some more, the Nazi Salute would have been too obvious.
Susan - great link you posted on the Passover. Very helpful considering I will be teaching it to my Sunday School class tomorrow. The History Channel doesn’t usually get all the facts right but this one is right on.
I am actually teaching them about the Lord’s Supper and how Christ observed his last Passover with the disciples before he was crucified and how he changed it’s meaning to be a remembrance of his death (sacrifice for us - 1 Corinthians 11:25 “…this do in remembrance of Me”.) The bread represents his body broken for us and the wine represents his blood shed for us.
I will be explaining the meanings of the various items on the Sedar plate so that was very helpful. Too bad I don’t have a laptop or I’d pull up that link and let them watch it.
Sunshine and Avi–
I went and looked up the spelling for Seder– I found it is spelled Seder– LOL– Is this correct Avi?
Sunshine– I thought those videos were interesting and I am so glad you are able to use it tomorrow– for once, I am helpful! It is LDG and Max who clean up after my blunders!!
Jen teaches Sunday School too~
Avi– is this correct?
Maror and Chazeret; Two types of bitter herbs, symbolizing the bitterness and harshness of the slavery which the Jews endured in Ancient Egypt. For maror, many people use freshly grated horseradish or whole horseradish root. Chazeret is typically romaine lettuce, whose roots are bitter-tasting. Either the horseradish or romaine lettuce may be eaten in fulfillment of the mitzvah of eating bitter herbs during the Seder.
Charoset; A sweet, brown, pebbly mixture, representing the mortar used by the Jewish slaves to build the storehouses of Egypt.
Karpas; A vegetable other than bitter herbs, usually parsley but sometimes something such as celery or cooked potato, which is dipped into salt water (Ashkenazi custom), vinegar (Sephardi custom) or charoset (older custom, still common amongst Yemenite Jews) at the beginning of the Seder.
Z’roa; A roasted shank bone, symbolizing the korban Pesach (Pesach sacrifice), which was a lamb offered in the Temple in Jerusalem and was then roasted and eaten as part of the meal on Seder night.
Beitzah; A roasted egg, symbolizing the korban chagigah (festival sacrifice) that was offered in the Temple in Jerusalem and was then roasted and eaten as part of the meal on Seder night.

Did you see Mr. O’ last week after Bill Maher made those comments against the Pope? Boy was he angry– and I will say Mr. O’ was right on the money!!! Afghan police clashed with Iranian forces at the southwestern border between the two countries, leaving one civilian dead and two Iranian officers wounded, officials said Sunday.
The incident in the village of Pul-e-Abreshum in Nimroz province happened Saturday after an Iranian patrol entered Afghanistan, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.
Afghan police dispatched a unit to the village and a gunbattle ensued. A teacher from the village was killed during the firefight, said provincial police chief Gen. Ayub Badakhshi.
Two Iranian officers were wounded, the statement said.
The long and porous border between the two countries is used by smugglers to traffic drugs into Iran. Many Afghans also cross illegally into Iran from the area. Border clashes are common.
Separately, in eastern Kunar province, a rocket attack killed a 15-year old-boy and wounded five other children Sunday, said Abdul Sabur Allayar, the deputy provincial police chief.

Christians fight Chirstans in the Holy Land
Avi - both stories are very sad. Regarding the fight at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre….if Jesus were to return there today He would probably react in very much the same way he did when he threw out the money changers (sellers) from the Temple on Passover. His message was to love one another and here we find His followers fighting. Very sad.
Just a correction of the minor point in the first paragraph of the story. The ‘Zetas’ were NOT trained at the School of the Americas–this is part of the urban myth about the school. Zetas did receive some sort of US training (not sure how much, and how long ago) at Fort Bragg, NC. (The School of the Americas was at Fort Benning, GA at the time.)
They were the elite “special forces” of the Mexican military, trained in the U.S. at the School of the Americas at Fort Benning, Georgia and sent to “wipe out” one of the most powerful Mexican drug cartels.
