Tech Tuesday….bring on SPOT!
So, this is the weekly column where I post a cool, affordable gadget that you can find in stores or online. At the same time, you can ask questions about gadgets, camera’s, computers, etc… and I will do my best to answer those questions and find out any information. You can also suggest products to review in the coming weeks. This time I have decided to focus on the product SPOT Satellite Messenger. SPOT stands for ‘Satellite Personal Tracker’. According to the website, since it utilizes 100% satellite technology, SPOT works around the world - even where cell phones don’t, delivering messages using GPS coordinates and two satellites. I got the chance to play around with one, but haven’t yet used it in the field or on the road. The unit costs about $169 and does not include a small satellite subscription fee. After the video click on the link for specs on this unit. Here is an interview and explanation I got during my recent trip to CES.

Adam, what was the camera in Greta’s video? The one you were holding.
re: SPOT…sometimes i just dont want to be found!
Since i go round trip about 2 miles daily, I “think” i know where i am!
I need one of those Spot gizmos so I can track Max and LDG to know when they are awake!
@Susan-AZ
yes, sure you do… ((grin))
…more likely we need one to find *you*.
@Adam Housley
That does look to be a pretty trick piece of tech. The 911 function alone might make it a must-carry for certain reporters. Just make sure Retread and Derek have your find-function and can know to respond. <–inside reference to your last Venezuela trip.
OutDoor Magazine tested SPOT and they said that it was pretty much worthless if your a hiker in the mountains or under ANY type of tree cover since the signal is too weak to work. Even putting the unit under a few laters of clothing stopped the transmitter. They said, wait for the next version or just bring your GPS cellphone with you instead.
I dont get it … its an SMS thing or a call thing =/
LDG—
@2:46 post of yours-
Adam, did they give a reason why they didnt want to go with it?
Adam,
on my phone in Israel when i dial 911 it connects to the popo 101/ 100
even when there is no signal lol….. when i dial 911 it says emergency so i figure it calls the popo but not 100 percent sure lol
I love it………some hikers here in Albq, NM got lost in CO since Jan and they are no where to be found……..this would be a great and inexpensive gadget for all hikers to carry!!
Susan: i will send you my email address that goes to my cell phone so you can know where i am.
off subject…but this is amazing!

Talk about gaurdian angels!!!!
LDG,
23:23 U.S. official: Espionage case involving Pollard clearly larger than thought (Reuters) AY KARABA^2
Max-
cool– thanks–
we were looking for you today as a matter of fact!
xxx
Max-
I left my question in the classroom thread-
Adam–
there are a few of us who would like to either see if we got the right answer or if not, a hint to be posted for the POD– (porfavor)
I need a SPOT to track you down!
Adam doesn’t come around enough!
well, g’day mates! I’m off to hear the crickets and dream.
Besides, no one seems to be around now.
Adam–
let me know when an anti-aging gizmo hits the market. I will be the first to buy one!
And what is your email address so I can track you down with the cell phone? Max- find out!
Sunshine–
did you read he has to go to the store and buy groceries? You eat Adam? What is this about the tailor? You have a tailor? I would love to see that post!
And for today’s *really obscure* pop reference — from the 70’s
About wanting to meet someone’s tailor:
“He’s the hairy handed gent who ran amuck in Kent
“Lately he’s been overheard in Mayfair…”
((grin))
Will SPOT work with our tinfoil hats? I still say that the best thing to carry with you if you’re hiking in unknown terrain is a compass and a good map. If you don’t know how to use a compass or read a map, stay to hiking on the marked trails, or better yet, your treadmills in the comfort of your local health spa………….Of course, I have seen people wander through these aimlessly too…..searching for the Natural Latte Bars or Organic Mudpack Baths………..Life’s tough sometimes.
I bet K2 wishes her son had one of these. He’s out of the country (forget where) and has no communication devices.
Wondering … does the sender of the message know if their ‘call’ has been received?
(Patty- great guardian angel story! The postman’s oath needs to be re-written to include this.)
you probably heard this story but did you see the pictures of the 8 ft gator that made it’s way into a woman’s kitchen here in FL? YIKES! Here’s the link to the pictures.: http://www.wftv.com/slideshow/news/15956058/detail.html
click on my name and see the picture of a BIG gator I took while on a field trip with one of my boys. We were at the wildlife refuge (which you drive through on the way to the beach). We’ve even had one this big “walk” through our yard. They do travel a bit during mating season.
I want something like this to descreetly track teens, only they can’t know I am following them! Too bad the signal isn’t good around trees, that is my biggest loop in cell service.
‘morning All.
Jen S….i think K2’s son is in New Zealand? maybe?
LDG..Werewolves of London
Adam…tailor??? hummmmm
now you know that leads our imaginations all kinds of places!!!
Like …to a church! *L*
@Patty
yes, ma’am. Warren Zevon for the win. — “ha! I’d like to meet his tailor.”
THIRD try to post this. WordPress must hate Wiki-p links now:
@Retread and John
this was my “no way!” moment for the day. Wiki-p actually has an entry regarding Tin Foil Hats:
remove all spaces before cutting and pasting, please.
h t t p : / / en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tin-foil_hat
guess I better get me one of those hats, uh-huh.
a “reflector beanie”…LDG…that is funny!
LDG……..LOL, and this is what the tinfoil hats protect us from……..
h t t p: // en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_World_Order_%28conspiracy_theory%29
You’ll probably have to enter it into URL address as Word Press is acting up again today………….and delete all spaces
@John
oh crimney… Further proof that *everything* has a wiki-p entry…
Can you imagine being on the editorial board assigned to oversee quality on pages like those?
@Avi (or anyone else with an interest in the various Israeli conflicts)
Looks like there will be at least some public confirmation regarding the target of the Israeli airstrike against Syria back a couple months ago.
http://www.upi.com/NewsTrack/Top_News/2008/04/23/cia_to_show_north_korea-syria_nuke_link/8838/
I hope YouTube has another Presidential Debate before the general election this fall. I sure would ask how the candidates stand on the NWO and if they think the issuance of tin foil hats (TFH) to the public should be government funded. Of course we probably can’t trust any TFH’s the government issues, since they might be part of the plot.
I’m thinking about buying aluminum futures……….this could be bigger than the present day oil price speculation boom.

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,352293,00.html
he he hehe
@Avi
nothing out of UNIFIL as of now, directly or via UN News Service. sorry.
Looked at Patty’s link.
wow… 4 minutes to open a FOXNews story page… over a 35Mb connection. Something is still borked.
ok, back to silliness now for the moment:
@Patty
“They” just want you to believe those were flares… ((nodnod)).
lovely… and now we get script errors on this page, too.
good thing there is a more current thread up… about threads!
hi ho and over we go.
Adam,
Enjoy your techno gadgets while you can…at about 45 the old reading glasses will be needed and all those tiny buttons will be one big blur. :>) By the way while you’re in SoCal see if there are any storms brewing offshore and stop by the Wedge and get some good shots, and maybe try it yourself.
Tom
Patty–
I heard about the story you posted- some idiot playing games– and he didn’t know it was illegal!
Got everyone excited in the north part of Phoenix- LOL
Sunshine– I saw the alligator story last night– the alligator was after that family’s cat- (the cat is fine) The dispatcher kept asking the lady if she was sure it was not an iguana!
Cesar Laurean , in Mexico, is going to have company– some man killed his wife/girlfriend and took the three kids and they think he is headed to Mexico–
What next?
Surfdog–
you too with the glasses? I totally understand- I upgraded my cell to be cool and I couldn’t see the numbers so I am using my old one just so I can see the numbers– I like the zoom feature here on the computer!
Susan-AZ
Oh yeah, dozens of pairs…for reading…for TV and a couple for really close work and I have them squirreled away everywhere…car…house…garage and I had several at work until I retired.
And forget bifocals they’re only good for a quick dizzy drunk.
Tom
Adam….the advertisement that is stuck into the front page is funny… or ironic that its is on Housley’s House page
it says “Determine the movement of ADAM INC”
its a scottrade ad that also says “the SPAR indictes that ADAM is in a bearish trend”
Surfdog–
my sentiments exactly-
I go to the 99 cent store and stock up on them! I have them everywhere- different styles- (I have to be cool)
Ditto to the bifocals– great way you put it- quick dizzy drunk!
Now another observation of mine is I seem to have become absent minded. I have about twelve reading glasses and I can never find one. The other day I was out in the backyard and I found a pair of reading glasses I had left out on one of the chairs.
Any thoughts on how to cure this? I think I put them in an area where I will find one but I never seem to find them. Tough life here!
surferdog-
Zap over here a pair of your glasses so I can see what the heck Patty is talking about!
I haven’t watched Greta in awhile– she is talking about Wally gator! They are going to destroy the gator– Greta is like I am– she feels sorry for the gator-
susan…*L* in the front page, upper right corner, the ad changes with every reload of the page, i dont know how many choice it has to put there, but you might click for 2 days and not see the same ad!
Fox News front page?
How ridiculous is if what you eat determines the sex of the baby? If you eat a bowl of cereal everyday, you are more likely to have a boy? And if you don’t skip a meal, you will have a boy- (lots of calories)
Adam– I guess when Tamera gets pregnant and you want a boy, you know what to do now- forget the chromosomes! X and Y’s–
And if you want a girl, starve Tamera-
Susan,
The only cure is lots and lots of glasses…or you could use the granny string around your neck. I’d use the string but I’d have to wear about 4 pairs for the differing distances. Not too long ago I went to a restaurant and I didn’t have my glasses, which of course meant I couldn’t read the menu. I had to tell the waitress what I wanted rather than the number 6 or whatever. I’m sure she thought I couldn’t read…oh well.
Tom
I look at the pictures on the menu– it helps!
