Say NO to Avocados?!
We are nestled in the mountains of inland north San Diego County. A light breeze has drifted through the orchard next to our satellite truck most of the day. I can picture myself sitting in a hammock strun between two trees with a book in hand. While the normalities of everyday life may not be available (Internet access, restaurants), a spring day in the clean air and amongst the agricultural is truly delightful. We have already reported live for FOX News, FOX Radio and FOX Business eight times, with more to come.
Our story should concern every American, from sea to shining sea, mountain range to orchard, because as California farmers run out of water and these trees run out of time, the sounds of saws now echo through once serene groves of hass avocados. As owner Jerome Stehly said to me “You want your food grown close to home. You don’t want all of your food grown offshore or being put on ships and being shipped for weeks. Fresh produce needs to come fresh.” more on the the story after the video and link
done
According to Brian Thomas at the Metropolitan Water District, “The first time that we’ve actually called upon the growers to cut back 30% is this year, 2008. It’s in response to lower water supplies primarily from the state water project.”
The California project taps water from a variety of sources. Even in a relatively normal rain year, water remains scarce in these parts, with the Colorado River being tapped more than ever before and the California aqueduct periodically shut down to protect endangered fish. That means in places like Valley Center California, northeast of San Diego, family farmers like the Stehly brothers are now forced to cut down a significant number of their avocado’s because the tree saps more water than most other crops.
Brother Noel Stehly says, “We’re not sure that the water will be there. So it’s a guessing game at this point, but farmers are a resilient people and we keep on trying.” Even though they have been sawed down, avocados are a jungle tree and they can regrow from a stump to produce crops in just three years. But with a shortage of water here in California, many farmers are either yanking these stumps out and planting a different crop … or putting in nothing at all.
Farmers hope the water shortage can be solved soon, by conservation, and improving storage and delivery methods. In the meantime, while the trend to cut continues, the resolve to re-grow hasn’t gone down with the trees. “We’re still here, we want to farm and we think we have the best tasting and best quality fruit,” says Jerome.
But the concern now is that the lack of water could spread and impact other crops, from citrus to melons. And if that happens here … expect to pay more at the store.

susan, i dunno, there is just something about the mushy green that reminds me of a sick baby calf! if you get my reasoning!!?? *LOL*

Looking forward to it! Thanks for the comments, too.
And for today’s entry in the Deniable Intermediaries category:
B. Richardson, New Mexico Governor and common “volunteer” intermediary in international hostage situations, has his latest pronouncement on the Colombia FARC hostages… well at least the three American and one French national of note. Apparently the other ~696 aren’t worthy of his assistance…

I do prefer to have our own avocados from here in California. We eat a lot of them and I
really don’t want them coming in from foreign lands. We have enough water and I pray that
we always will. Some things are just a scare tactic and we must go on faith that He will
provide the water and the avocados. God bless all the farmers too.
Max–

will check later to see what question you have come up with!

Terri: walking most of the time. We also have busses and a subway system, so we use them for longer journies. And cabs when we need to be somewhere fast.

Jen & Terri: We don’t even own a car, it’d be far to expensive.
*******************************************************
*big huge wide eyes!!!!!!!!!!!!!*
I could not imagine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How do you all do it? Cab?
Shuttle?
Wow.. I’m in shock…. I could not live w/o a car.
Jen & Terri: We don’t even own a car, it’d be far to expensive.
Susan: John McCain was the one publicizing the cuting of the gas tax from Memorial Day to Labor day. He’s trying to get congress to pass it, but gas tax is only about 18cent per gallon in the US, so it’s not a big saving.
Hi all-
Be looking in the mail for those rebate checks– coming earlier– who do I thank? China? Is this where we borrowed the money from? LOL
Safeway has it if you buy $50.00 or more of food, you get 15cents deducted from the gas if you pump gas from one of their stations. Good for one visit! whoopie doo!
Isn’t there a rumor going on about cutting the gas taxes from Memorial Day to Labor?
Terri– do your stores run specials? Frys has the milk running on sale right now- I always look at the ads- We drink a lot of milk here- Eggs, I hardly ever buy- only if I bake- which is not too often- Maybe it is a good thing Ken is a diabetic–
I will watch CNN tonight. I want to see you again. LOL
Jen– Adam sure does get confused with time, doesn’t he?
Max… how do you all afford gas????????????????????????
Honestly… that is awful.
Terri
That’s great; I will watch again.
Adam-
You lose track of time? Your two hours has turned into over 24.
Hope you’re OK.
——————————
Max– Holy Cow!! No wonder you walk
Pattypult–
Susan– interesting as usual; news from A-Z!
Terri: at least you don’t have approximately 210% gas tax there.
70% of the price here is taxes. So you multiply the price of gas there by 3.10 to get the price here.
Your trip to beaver would cost around $400 if you were paying UK gas prices.
We’ll be on CNN again tonight, they are re~airing the Healthcare ~ Critical Condition program.
8pm Eastern.
Hello everyone.
Scary about the food prices…
a couple weeks ago I went to a local store, a gallon of milk was $4.99 and a dozen eggs were $2.99! I don’t know how big families are doing it….
My husband is convinced that it’s b/c of the ethanol deal…
causing grain to go up, yada yada.
Gas, OMG … it’s killin us everytime we run up to Beaver… it used to cost us about 75 a trip..
now it’s 130 ~ Mike runs up every week to work on the cabin.
Avi-
you can be arrested but you don’t have to have the Miranda warnings– these come into play as for arrest and interrogation–
“However, an individual can be arrested without being read a Miranda warning. The purpose of a Miranda warning is only to protect a suspect from making incriminating statements during questioning. All police need to legally arrest a person is probable cause - a reasonable belief that an individual has committed a crime. Police are required to read the Miranda warning only before interrogating a suspect.”
But I think since the Miranda warnings are a procedural safeguard, law enforcement reads the warnings even in a simple arrest to cover their butts!
Yes- Ernesto was killed in a bar brawl– He would have lived longer behind bars!
Shall be a good interview
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/04/24/60minutes/main4040294.shtml
SUs,
yah i know the history of him i learned it in AP american govt …. the ironic thing of his story is that the he was killed and the guy who killed him didnt say a word due to his maranda rights and walked free no one was ever charged with Miranadas murder…
But Susan the question is once your arrested meaning having the handcuffs put on you that means our arrested and have the right to the Miranda rights. Or can you be handcuffed and not arrested? Because if your just going to be interrogated you go willingly??
So if they are handcuffed by Border Patrol they are taken to a prison cell therefore into US soil soo yah they are arrested ……
Or do they just send the back to Mexico through a back door after they are caught ??
I think on Fox i saw a story a long time ago that showed illegals in a AZ or TX jail who were caught.. not sure though
Adam–
we went from avocados to aces– Well, they both begin with an -A-
Hope you made it back safely!
@LDG
re: R. Cunningham (and his RIO, W.P. Driscoll) — they were the only Navy “aces” in the VietNam War,
Oh yes– Ace=5 kills— whoever his final kill was for that day, (Duke) it made him an Ace–
May 10th is KC Fresno’s anniversary–
Carrie– I know you won’t see this– but happy day to you tomorrow– Carrie is getting married tomorrow!
LDG–
I jotted notes while I was watching– you think I would have remembered all that? Yes– Driscoll and Cunningham both ejected as the plane was on fire!
The title to this was Dog Fight– which I found to be interesting as Top Gun (the school teaches this) as at one time, Dog Fighting was to become obselete and it was realized dog fighting was needed– so yes, I had a great time learning today!
@Susan-AZ
Wow, you did have a good time at all that! Yay for the History Channel!
re: R. Cunningham (and his RIO, W.P. Driscoll) — they were the only Navy “aces” in the VietNam War, yes. And yes, Cunningham pled guilty to various corruption charges as a congressman in 2005.
LDG—
I decided to take a nap after I got back earlier and I turned on the History channel– Well so much for snoozing- I only caught the second hour– what did I learn? (Dog Fights)
First there are two guys I would love to acknowledge Bud Anderson– triple Ace in WW11 who flew a P-51- Mustang– I came in at the end of this but I was able to get a bit of air combat– What a guy! And now I know when I hear P-51, where to place this plane- and which war- In his 80’s he was still in active pilot!
Second person I am acknowledging is Major General Blesse Fredericks aka Boots– Korean War Ace Fighter- who flew the F 86 Sabre. Here I learned about the MiG 15– He had a major air combat with the MiG 15 and ran out of fuel but managed to get to the ocean and he ejected–
Wrote the- No Guts, No Glory– truly amazing man!!!!
But then Duke Cunningham and his May 10th, 1972 story was shown– (Isn’t he a felon or didn’t he plead guilty to some federal charges?) well the bit about the MiG-17 and the Phantom planes and the air combat was very interesting– the last MiG-17 Cunningham shot down was said to have been Colonel Toon’s– but this is just conjecture– I guess because the pilot was so skilled- doing the vertical flying as opposed to the horizontal as the MiG-17’s were use to–
Quite a dogfight!! His plane got hit by a SAM — He had to eject too–
I also learned a bit about g turns–
My point here– I won’t be so in the dark when I hear these names anymore and I can even place the war! LOL
oh and the Miranda warnings are named after an Ernesto Miranda– a case which took place here in Arizona circa 1960’s– story goes he kidnapped and raped an 18 year old mentally retarded woman and he was not advised of his rights as to self-incrimination and having a lawyer present when he was brought in for questioning.
His attorney tried to get the confession thrown out of court–this case hit the Supreme Court and Ernesto won–His statements were not held admissable, hence the intro to the Miranda warnings– (you have the right to remain silent and the right to have a lawyer– however these are said) but point to these warnings are if you are to be in custody and interrogated–
oops– meant to say– ..not read the Miranda warnings, they have found a loop hole …..
Note that one need not be Mirandized to be arrested. There is a difference between being arrested and being questioned. Also, basic questions, such as name, address, and Social Security number do not need to be covered by a Miranda warning. The police also need not Mirandize someone who is not a suspect in a crime.
Avi–
Miranda warnings are for arrest and interrogation– so if they are being detained and not being interrogated, there is not need for the Miranda warnings– Many people think if you are being arrested and not read the Miranda warnings, they have no found a loop hole– Miranda warnings are just procedural– this is not a statute-
Avi..dont know the answer to your question, but i did find this…
Immigration agents are not required to obtain warrants to detain suspects. The agents also have broad authority to question people about their immigration status and to search them and their homes. There are no Miranda rights that agents must read when making arrests. Detained immigrants have the right to a lawyer, but only one they can pay for.
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10/14/weekinreview/14preston.html?_r=1&oref=slogin
Kathy in TX……….also, let’s hope that the bottom doesn’t fall out of the prices for those crops the farmers have spent their hard earned dollars on planting………..as you said, in hopes of “great times”. If the commodities speculators, who are the main driving force behind these outrages prices, pull their money out of the crop futures markets and go somewhere else, let’s say coal futures for example, it will leave a lot of US farmers high and dry………Unable to sell their crops for profit, thus leaving them vunerable to not being able to pay off their bank loans that many have accumulated in buying their seeds and equipment.
This would be a total disaster for the US economy, as not only more farms will fail, but also more banks and lending institutions would follow suit. This summer and fall crop market could be very volatile indeed.
Adam or to anyone,
When the Border Patrol catches illegals crossing the border( Mexico) and they arrest them are they read their Maranda rights and put in jail till they are deported or do they go stright back to Mexico without being read their Maranda rights eventhough they have been ” arrested” or what?
Socal surfer,
Hope you look like a lobster, may your beer be luke warm, your peanuts stale, and your subscription to playboy be replaced by jihadist weekly and may Al Gore be your next door neighbor and Michael Moore be your long lost and now homeless brother. Oh and my wife hopes you burned your butt.
To everyone: I’m going home to warm up with my beautiful, hot and sexy wife. She feels sorry for me.
Have a cold weekend. :grr:
Being married to a farmer I asked a month ago where he thought we were headed on food costs. His prediction is SKY HIGH. He knows far more than most pundants when it comes to farming. As he said the cost we have is tripled to just produce a crop that cost is the base cost. He planted a lot of corn, I hate to say it but we need corn comodity to go sky high. It would hit us at a great time.
Remember I am the one that told this group many moons ago those oversea farmers are completely subsized, and have far fewer restrictions. Our American farmers are farming with one hand tied behind their back and trying to make it. It is time America comes to understand how we feel, and truly maybe this situation will get a true FARM bill not a Welfare bill on the agenda of the congress and senate.
K2 remember Denmark is a socialist country, they don’t care who they have they all make the same no matter who is running the country.
Please visit my blog for a great big announcement, hint blogspot and brazoscowgirl will get you there.
Abbas says pessimistic about peace prospects
Published: 04.25.08, 22:42 / Israel News
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas says he failed to achieve any progress in Middle East peace talks with President George W. Bush and he is returning home with little to show for his visit.
The Palestinian leader is pessimistic about the prospects of achieving any deal with Israel this year, despite a big US push that began five months ago at a summit in Annapolis, Maryland. Abbas says the biggest obstacle is Israel’s continued expansion of settlements. (AP)
