Border Battle

As a reminder and as we have reported recently, the United Nations High Commissioner on Human Rights has been lobbying Mexican President Felipe Calderon to pull his troops out of Mexican cities in favor of police forces, many of which have either been corrupted by the drug cartels, or depleted due to fear. Now this..Seventeen Mexican drug gang members were killed near the U.S. border on Saturday, their bodies scattered along a road after one of the deadliest shootouts in Mexico’s three-year narco-war.

Rival factions of the Arellano Felix drug cartel in Tijuana on the Mexico-California border battled each other with rifles and machine guns in the early hours of the morning, police said.

Fourteen bodies were lying in pools of blood on a road near assembly-for-export maquiladora plants on the city’s eastern limits. The corpses were surrounded by hundreds of bullet casings and many of their faces were destroyed.

Two of the dead were believed to be senior hitmen for the Arellano Felix cartel and were identified by large gold rings on their fingers. The rings carried the icon of Saint Death, a ghoulish figure that gangsters believe protects them, police said.

Some 190 people have been killed in Tijuana so far this year. In 2007, there were more than 2,500 drug killings across Mexico and there have been more than 900 this year. Heavily armed federal police patrolled across Tijuana after the gunfight. Soldiers and police guarded the city’s main hospital where the wounded were being treated to prevent any attempt by drug gangs to pull them out.

Baja California state police chief Daniel de la Rosa said fresh troops from Mexico City were arriving in Tijuana, which borders San Diego, California. President Felipe Calderon has sent thousands of troops to Tijuana and Baja California state since taking office in December 2006. Some 25,000 soldiers and federal police are deployed to fight cartels in drug hot spots across Mexico.

Couple of “unfunfacts” about that fight, as per wire reports:

–1500+ empty ammo casings swept up as part of the evidence collection after the fight.

–several of the vehicles used by the shooters had U.S. license plates.

Those re-enforcements are arriving none-too-soon. Big mess to deal with and no clear answer as to whether the fighting is over, even for now.

wow. that’s such a high murder rate in Tijuana, considering only about 1,287,000 people live there.

why would the survivors want to destroy the faces of the dead? would it have been the dead’s friends or foes who destroyed their faces?

Comment by Socal Surfer

local socal news is running stories about how tourists in TJ have dropped 90% since 2005. Well, duh! who wants to be kidnapped or killed for simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time?

Comment by Terri ~ Las Vegas

Yikes…
You wouldn’t catch me EVER going to Mexico.
Nope… never ever. Such corruption that goes on there.

It’s too bad soo many Americans do drugs …
… I can’t help but think that each person that does drugs is helping to keep this kind of thing happening.

Drugs… such an ugly thing… it ruins people lives….
My husband was telling me that so much of the crimes that go on in this city is b/c of drugs.

Comment by Kathy in Tx

Adam I thought this was a very catching story. Tijuana and Nueva Laredo used to be the places you could go and feel safe. Sad it has come to this amount of violence.

Comment by K2

Tijuana was once a safe place to visit. You could walk across the border, catch a cab and head to the downtown area. Good food, good shopping. Many very poor living around the city. We do not even have a comparison in the USA as to the level of poverty.

Would not even think about going to Tijuana now.

Kudos to Calderon for addressing the problem. It has not been, nor will it be easy. Ignoring the drug cartels did not work either.

Comment by Susan-AZ

This is extremely disturbing- This is out of control — way out of control!!

Ditto to Kathy’s remark– It was like taking a vacation when people use to go to Tijuana and have a good old time! This is ruining the economy there-

As for Mexico, the country Mexico has some very beautiful places where it is still safe to go so I would not boycott Mexico. My father’s property is there and it is very safe.

I just hope Calderón and US can get this situation under control.

thanks for the heads up to this story Adam!

Did you water the plants and do those dirty dishes you left when you took off?

Comment by Susan-AZ

No more partying in Tijuana—

Comment by Max Kon

Adam: did you send the video? I haven’t got it, my email has been all screwy.

Comment by John

The use of US license plates on some of the vehicles involved is not surprising. Cars/trucks that carry US license plates in Mexico are less likely to be stolen or broken into by local thieves ans gangs ( seems like even the hardcore drug cartel members don’t like international incidents ), but probably more importantly, US tagged cars are less likely to be bothered by the Mexican local police departments for simple traffic violation stops (ie-speeding, illegal lane changes etc.)…………no traffic stops means no searches.

Hi everyone!

We have visited Mexico many times over the years.

This story distresses me as we will go again. We haven’t
been to the border towns recently-think I will stay away.
The cruise lines are still going-and they won’t go where there
is a danger to the passengers.

What areas, besides the borders are so dangerous?

Does anyone have a plan to clean up the corruption-ideas?

Do the high officials still want to clean up the drug problems.
I must have missed a bunch of threads on this story!

I love avacados too! Salt water to watering water would be great
if it didn’t cost too much!

Hi everyone!

Hi Adam’s Mom!
Where have you been?

Adam–
Glad you got your housework all done and you are back online.

These numbers are staggering and so sad.
Saint Death?? Please protect me from my evil deeds. …..I think their prayers fell on deaf ears.

Comment by Susan-AZ

Hi Adam’s mom!!!

We have missed you and I have asked about you a couple times!

I can’t think of any areas inside Mexico which are more dangerous than some of what goes on in our cities here- A friend of mine called me today from Bend, Oregon- crime is escalating there and she is moving back to Arizona the first week of July.

Corruption is been an ongoing thing in Mexico and Presidente Calderón walked right into a hornet’s nest- My neighbor in Mexico City worked for Petroleos Mexicano, and he was so corrupt- he stold millions and got away with it as they all did and do. I did not like the man but I loved his family.

I saw Tia and Cory’s wedding picture today in People Magazine as I was checking out at the grocery store. What a great looking couple!! The cake was beautiful– But I was disappointed Adam was not mentioned– it should have read: Tia’s twin sister Tamera, and her beau Adam Housley, correspondant for Fox News, were at the wedding also.

Should I write them a letter and tell them to re-write the article?

Regards from Arizona– (and I just made guacamole– so I had my avocado for the day!)

Project is still on!

I used to see Tia and Tamera in Agoura all the time a few years ago. Nearly everytime I went to my local Thai or Chinese restarant for lunch. Both of them would be there.

Speaking of plastics– was in my emails-

The news about plastics has been pretty alarming lately, causing some of us to go dashing for the water bottles to see what kind of plastic they are—and find out if we’ve been unwittingly poisoning our children and ourselves with chemicals leaching into the water from them.
If you’ve been concerned, here is a handy chart that identifies the good, bad, and OK plastics and where they are found. Find out here:
1 Polyethylene terephthalate (PET or PETE)
Used to make soft drink, water, sports drink, ketchup, and salad dressing bottles, and peanut butter, pickle, jelly and jam jars.
GOOD: Not known to leach any chemicals that are suspected of causing cancer or disrupting hormones.
2 High density polyethylene (HDPE)
Milk, water, and juice bottles, yogurt and margarine tubs, cereal box liners, and grocery, trash, and retail bags.
GOOD: Not known to leach any chemicals that are suspected of causing cancer or disrupting hormones.
3 Polyvinyl chloride (V or PVC)
Most cling-wrapped meats, cheeses, and other foods sold in delicatessens and groceries are wrapped in PVC.
BAD: To soften into its flexible form, manufacturers add “plasticizers” during production. Traces of these chemicals can leach out of PVC when in contact with foods. According to the National Institutes of Health, di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), commonly found in PVC, is a suspected human carcinogen.
4 Low-density polyethylene (LDPE)
Some bread and frozen food bags and squeezable bottles.
OK: Not known to leach any chemicals that are suspected of causing cancer or disrupting hormones, but not as widely recycled as #1 or #2.
5 Polypropylene (PP)
Some ketchup bottles and yogurt and margarine tubs.
OK: Hazardous during production, but not known to leach any chemicals that are suspected of causing cancer or disrupting hormones. Not as widely recycled as #1 and #2.
6 Polystyrene (PS)
Foam insulation and also for hard applications (e.g. cups, some toys)
BAD: Benzene (material used in production) is a known human carcinogen. Butadiene and styrene (the basic building block of the plastic) are suspected carcinogens. Energy intensive and poor recycling.
7 Other (usually polycarbonate)
Baby bottles, microwave ovenware, eating utensils, plastic coating for metal cans
BAD: Made with biphenyl-A, a chemical invented in the 1930s in search for synthetic estrogens. A hormone disruptor. Simulates the action of estrogen when tested in human breast cancer studies. Can leach into food as product ages.

We honeymooned in Xtatpa, someone told us to go over to the fishing village called Zatanahu. We did and everywhere we went the policio had machine guns. It was a sad village, the mexican people are very poor.

We have a friend that married an illegal years ago, she said you could drive into his hometown in a twenty year old car and be treated like a king. Mainly because no one can afford a car that is that new.

Our doctor has done mission trips to Mexico, they go deep into Mexico and built schools and churches. He has seen men with starving kids, the church began to cook meals at night for the community they helped.

All the corruption robs the really needy of the what most would be able to do.

The Lost City the movie about Havana by Andy Garcia is on Netflix instant viewing. It is incredible! Really go watch it!

Comment by Susan-AZ

Kathy–

I haven’t seen the movie– Isn’t it about the Cuban revolution? I guess it has been banned in certain parts of South America because it depicts Che Guevara in a not a favorable light– I imagine Venezuela would be one of these places–

The Mexican citizens who care about their country and it’s stability need to rise up against these drug dealers. I feel for them! It must be such a scary thing! You would be like a prisoner in your own home, afraid to go outside for fear of being shot.

Comment by John

Sunshine……..good morning. There are also plenty of neighborhoods right here in the US where people are “prisoners in their own homes”, as you put it. This is not just an isolated Mexican problem. We (law abiding citizens) need to take a lot of neighborhoods, cities and, in certain cases, whole countries back. IMO

But, let’s start the week on a happy note………
A young couple, on the brink of divorce, goes to a marriage counselor for help. The marriage asks the wife what the problem is in their relationship.
She responds somewhat uncomfortably, “My husband suffers from premature ejaculation”
“Is that true?”, the counselor asks the husband.
“Well, not exactly true”, the husband replies, “It’s her who suffers…….not me”.

Clearly she thinks so. *sheesh*

that is a prime example of why “power” should not be given to certain types of people (or the presumption of power)! Like Politicians!!!!!!

Comment by Max Kon

Patty: Well let’s hope that the Dems alienate half their base so badly that those alienated join the GOP, and the GOP get control of the White House and Lower House at least, then Pelosi will be ‘former speaker’ :D

Susan,

SurfDog has not been in Mexico, but close. :>) I don’t guess it’s appropriate to say I’ve been on a long weekend since I’m retired and everyday is the beginning of a long weekend.

The border appears to be getting more dangerous especially Tijuana and Nuevo Laredo. I wonder if the drug smuggling and violence is becoming that bad in the smaller communities that dot the Rio Grande?

and now, for a little threadjacking, for a good cause…

The former “trivia/connections” game that was on the POD-8 thread is moving here.

The open question was mine, and Susan-AZ was in hot pursuit of the Bonus (2) answer before the thread became utterly unusable from script errors. Here is where she left off:

The Treaty of Versailles–

League of Nations–

let me read this more tomorrow– Stepwise–

I need to connect the dots!

I will figure this out– of course with you around! (sending you a wave)

the two who wanted the Treaty of Versailles enforced was US and Japan-

WOW– off topic!

Going back to many, many comments about Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia– in another quiz question– I just found the answer-

Summary
Self-determination was point 10 of Wilson’s Fourteen Points. Wilson wanted to re-draw the frontiers of eastern Europe so that races ruled themselves. In some ways, self-determination was achieved. The Treaty of Versailles created Poland by taking West Prussia from Germany. It also created the new nation-states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The Treaty of Saint Germain created Czechoslovakia and the Treaty of Trianon created Yugoslavia. In all, nine nation states were set up.

However, the Big Three did not allow the defeated countries self-determination. Germans found themselves living in Poland, Lithuania and Czechoslovakia, and Anschluss with Austria was forbidden. Bulgaria and Turkey also lost land. In the new countries (especially Poland, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia), were ‘enclaves’ of minority races. Also, France and Britain did not allow colonies self-determination, and German colonies and the Turkish empire became mandates.

My reply:

@Susan-AZ

You do have all the elements to help you get the answer, but you haven’t connected it to the open question… “Bonus (2): What later treaty negotiation is said to have squandered that same relationship and led to an unfortunate change of world-view by the government and common populace of Country #1?” <–That relationship we now know refers to the good and respectful relationship between Teddy Roosevelt’s U.S. government and the Japanese Government of 1907 *and* we know Country #1 is Japan.

You did guess the Versaille Treaty as the answer. good so far, but…

…so what *About The Negotiation of the Versaille Treaty ending WWI* spoiled the good relationship, and what change happened to the Japanese “world-view” because of that?

((waits some hours for your reply, likely))

Hope you are having a good one. ((grin)) <– note I use them too… I just don’t want them to appear in the midst of text when I don’t want them there. ((nodnod))

@Susan-AZ

I am sort of here. You are telling me in your answer how things changed for the U.S. when the negotiations didn’t lead to the desired result for the U.S. … but that is not Country #1, i.e. Japan.

Comment by Susan- AZ

LDG–

I am slowly going to get there– first of all it helps to understand the Treaty– I am not going to look up answers now without understanding the concept– (thanks to you) it gives it more meaning–

I am headed to the store– I will be back in a bit– if your are resting– you can see later–

Sent you mail regarding your thoughts on this. It looks like you do have the idea!

Yes, Wilson’s treatment of the Japanese delegation at the Paris Peace Conference and the overall poor outcome of that is important to the answer.

Sorry to have kept you awake. I do hope you rest well, and satified that you have mostly all solved the last Bonus on this exercise.

“You just make my head work!” — then my work here is time well spent.
