Tech Tues….on Wednesday
So this comes a day late, but better late than never…as the old saying goes. I saw these machines late last fall and decided to get one for my parents for Christmas since they have a large record collection from back in the day. It took me three weeks to find a store that hadn’t sold out and I ended up calling a Brookstone store in Northern California and had them hold one for me. The unit I ended up buying was strictly a record to MP3, but while I was at CES I saw the cassette to MP3 unit which would also be a great gift. As for the price, not too bad. Both units are well under $200 and also easy to set up. I have heard a few songs my mom has converted and they sound darn good. Perfect, no, but darn good. For most of us, it would be tough to tell the difference from one bought and downloaded online. done

Here the USB turntables like that one go for about $300-400, ugh. If good ones were closer to $200 i’d probably get one for my parents too. Something for playing cassette tapes on the computer would be good too, but they are about $200 here.
I’ll just have to wait to get to the US, and buy them there.
Seeing that record player reminds me of simpler times……..I miss those times ,just like I do the snaps, crackles and pops of the LP. Maybe we can do reverse technology…..download the song from the PC and “cut” it onto a ‘big 10 inch’.
Don’t get excited girls……….it’s a nickname for a record.
I just rewatched the video, the cassette recorder at the end was the same one i found on sale here.
And i found another turntable for converting records to MP3, for $180, more reasonable than $400.
Oh man, i could dust off my Steppenwolf lp that my bro gave me as a bday present!!
and whats this with “back in the day”??? It really isnt that long ago!
I refuse to be “that” old! *L*
I don’t have any of my vinyls anymore.
I did look this up though to see what it’s called; “vinyl to digital”
I then found ‘negatives to digital and photograph to digital’ which I would be Very interested in.
Does anyone have either one of these? And what can you tell me about it.
I have tons of my older pictures and the negatives — I’d love to do this. Maybe a good mother’s day gift

Adam - cool! That’s what my dad needs!!! Father’s day is just around the corner but this is quite a bit more than we usually spend. Sorry Dad, your on your own.
Times are tough. lol
jen S: negative scanners aren’t generally all that good, especially the low price ones, my dad takes photos of negatives with his old light box, but that’s probaby to expensive for a casual buyer. So go for one of the better quality fast negative scanners.
Jen…….I think what you’re looking for are called scanners. See the link below……b&h are a bit pricey, but you’ll get an idea of the features available. You can also try Amazon.com, Circuit City, Costco sites.

Thx for the info. The scanner on my copier/fax machine just quit working. My IT guy couldn’t figure it out– it’s about 7 years old, HP, everything else on it is fine.
Anyway, I think you are both right, I just found this site, I just need to get a ‘flatbed’ for my particular wants and needs. I have the pictures that go with the negatives I want to turn to digital, so it sounds like that is easier and cheaper.
Here’s the site — he sounds like he knows what he’s talking about. His pics are great too.

jen…months ago i posted that i wanted to get a scanner like they use for business cards, for my old pictures. For me, the flatbed was going to take too long. I’d like to feed them, but want to make sure i dont ruin them. There was a link posted, i have it at home (i think). Maybe its the same one that John posted.
Patty
Yes, I remember that- and I think this is the same site John gave you. So you haven’t found anything yet?
I don’t like shopping for this kind of stuff..I just want someone to tell me what to get The price ranges are ridiculous. I think the site I posted is a good start. I need to find a place that lets you see it in action, and has a good return policy if I don’t like it.
Tomorrow is Holocaust remembrance day ….. in honor of the 6 million Jews killed during the Holocaust by the Nazis and Hitler….. a siren rings across the country as welll…..
then next week is Soldier remembrance day also a siren then finally THe happy day Independence Day 60!
Jen…nope i haven’t. But that is just my “powers” of procrastination showing!
I do like that site, Ive been there reading about camera’s, since i’m hoping to get a new one soon. What he says makes perfect sense. Atleast he sounds like he knows his stuff.
Now I really fell old. I have LPs too, and that is Phil Collins from Genisis singing. I am so old! Good Gosh I have to sell those puppies. Any takers on some John Denver?

Look how adorable this sweet family goose was.
Adam…did you ever say what the camera was that you had in your hand in the video from Greta’s office?
AND…what camera do you have for your photos? not a slr or srl or whatever it is, i just want a good point a shoot! I’ve read so many reviews, now i am lost! *L*
Patty………Just my 2 cents worth………..assuming you want a camera for general picture taking purposes (point and shoot photography), I would recommend the Canon PowerShot cameras. There are several models available for $300.00, or less. The differences between the models are usually in the amount of megapixels and/or optical zoom ranges……….but all are highly rated by photography mags and Consumer Reports in picture quality and ease of operation.
Sony and Fujifilm also make fine cameras for about the same price range.
I own an older Kodak model (it was the highest rated at the time) for my quick point and shoot and an Olympus for my advanced photography. I use the Kodak about 75% of the time because of it’s simplicity, however,if I was in the market today to replace it I would very seriously consider a Canon.
Now Adam probably knows a lot more than I do about todays cameras and will probably tell you that I’m nuts…………..which I am.
Patty–
We got a Canon PowerShot SD1000 Digital ELPH silver last year.
Love it!! Great results. The rechargeable battery in it is great -lasts a Long time! NO more AA’s!!!
Easy to use. Got it at Best Buy. Also got an Epson Picture Mate printer - very nice.
Our previous two were Kodak (Easy Share) and Olympus (SP350) as well….hmmm John do I know you? LOL
I will probably end up going there to talk to them about scanners, they usually help us out.
BTW - I finally waved good-bye to Brooke tonight.
Hey Adam–
I love Phil Collins– good choice– I don’t have any of my records– darn– but who was to know this would be here today! I am still working on getting a better camera– You saw the cameras I used that day when I met you– they work fine but I want one which takes a better picture– going to check out John’s idea-
You buy your mom cool gifts–
Terri– I can’t look at the link– but I can write a letter!
Avi– thanks for the heads up on what is going on!
Looks like Jen just made the same suggestion as to John’s- Cannon PowerShot!
Scary huh Susan? ha
Patty
I think this is what Greta got - Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5 - i think it is pretty popular today.

oops– I was in the first thread and I wasn’t sure if this was Adam’s Kathy blogger– but I see tis is you!
Those Nikon D40’s run about $600.00?
Looking forward to seeing the senior and hopefully a prom picture!
I got mine for under 500.00 Susan! They have been going down because there is a D80 everyone wants. To be honest this camera is perfect, I have taken beautiful action shots with it.
Thank you thank you thank you. You’re all awsome, but you knew that!
Its so much easier buying a camera or anything else if someone has actually used it!
Kathy–
I need something like in the $200.00 margin–
Susan, me too. I planned to spend no more than 300. Figured if that won’t take decent pics, i need a photographer, not a camera! *L*
I do like the gifts Adam buys me!
The Vinyl Record recorder
This was very easy to copy & hook up
(even for me) and recording our old
