Drug Bust 101
FRIDAY UPDATE
Bonds for those arrested in the big San Diego State drug sting range from $10,000 to $150,000, many accused have already pled not guilty. This comes as a professor at San Diego State tells the Union-Tribune newspaper that she’s concerned the school’s president Stephen Weber “unilaterally authorized” the Drug Enforcement Administration to conduct the operation. According to reports, “Now it’s drugs,” says Carole Kennedy, a political science professor who heads the faculty union. “Maybe next time it’s about political dissent … What happens when you have students talking about federal income tax policy, saying they’re not going to pay their taxes? Are they going to bring in IRS agents?”
WEDNESDAY NIGHT
We are getting ready for Greta’s show and we’ll be talking beforehand with Deputy District Attorney Damon Mosler. He’s appearing right after our report as our live is slated for about 10:06pm (7:06pm Pacific). Damon tells me about the strong cooperation between the DA, DEA and campus police. He explains the DA in San Diego County was approached last September to get involved in this investigation, one he believes is the largest bust ever on any college campus. He like the DEA believes that more arrests could come as all the avenues are followed.
WEDNESDAY LATE UPDATE
Just got off the phone with a contact at the DEA. They are obviously swamped with the ongoing investigation and the background parts of the case. They say more arrests are very possible, nothing like the magnitude we just saw with this bust, but groups of a couple here, four there etc. could go down as the pieces of the drug puzzle are put together.
They are looking at the connections with the Mexican drug cartels. At this point it looks like the gang banger from LA was the connection into the states.
They can’t comment about any investigations that may or may not be ongoing at other colleges. So far this drug web has not spread to other schools.
The DEA agent I spoke with says they hope this bust reminds people about the dangers of drugs and that parents need to communicate and stay informed of what their children are doing even when they are in college.
WEDNESDAY MORNING
While the crackdown at San Diego State may not be a surprise to some students we’ve spoken to here in San Diego, others are obviously worried about future ramifications when they go job hunting. Several seniors have mentioned they are happy that drugs are off the streets, but will this massive raid transcend into their job hunt? Will potential employers look at a candidate and remember what happened here and then not hire a San Diego State grad?
While those questions are still to be answered, we have learned a few new details. First, there is a connection between the drugs running through this campus and the Mexican cartels. The border is a very short drive from campus and the story of the cartels and their prowess in nearby Tijuana is one that we’ve covered many times in recent months. Secondly, this investigation is not over and more people could be taken into custody at any time. There is also no coincidence that the raids came down as finals week begins. Many students head home after tests, or on trips and if agents wanted to get their men/women, there was a definite time element involved.
We got the word as the raids began early yesterday morning. My colleague Anita Vogel reported on developments as our crew grabbed our stuff and headed south. I was in Northern California for a day off and headed to the airport to fly south to San Diego where I met our team of Producer Chris Spinder and Photographer Keith Railey.
Together we left early this morning, about 5am, and headed to campus where the reaction from student is still fresh and the investigations is still very warm. More info to come throughout the day.
Jen S: i think they made a good choice, but i don;t think it was a hard one ‘hmm, nice guy or a drug user? which one to hire’
oh boy…sorry about that.
jen…. correction……Its better than that other job!
Jen…YAH for your son!!!(and you) Its better that than that other job anyway!
My son is home from college for summer break and had a job interview this morning….the kid sitting next to him asked him, “do you know if they do drug testing here?”
My son said, “I don’t know, doesn’t matter to me.’
The kid said, “man I hope not.”
Pray for our youth! They are the future generation of our country if any one gives a darn!
BTW- my son got the job!
And hello all……….
John, are you going to the Bahamas next week? —-> ‘where in the world is John going?’ lol
OMG I left a comment for Jonathan! Please tell him I am not a stalker Adam! It is the English thing and my obcession with all things Austen, it is my weakness.
Kathy…it’s really the top left…but you got the right idea! ha ha
Okay now the comments are up top right? That is my only confusion! That and my weakness for Jonathon Hunt:D Sorry Adam! Hey Darvette, and Elio!!!!
John
Thanks, I will try that
Personally refresh - 91 degrees!!! Way to hot for me, this old lady does not like to “glow”
KC in Fresno……if you mean how do you refresh the blog, a right click on the mouse (or laptop) and then hit “Refresh” should do the trick……….
If you mean how can you personally refresh, here’s a thought……..

John ~ I loved the joke!
Adam…ya know that tan suit you wear? did it come from the Bro’s?
Elio- Caruso–
I loved the video of your store– Did you see your brother, left you a post in Italian? Here– let me post it for you! One of Adam’s friends here on the blog, Jen, translated it for us! And yes, I thought Adam looked more sharper than usual– It was the suit!!!!
Comment by Alberto, another brother…

complimenti, non ho capito niente dell’intervista ma ho visto che la siete cavata molto bene.
Ho avuto modo di ammirare il vostro negozio, ordinato e pieno di vestiti.
Vi ho trovato molto bene, mantenetevi sempre in forma..
Abbracci , Alberto
Nice to meet you— If I wore suits, yours would be the store to go too for alterations!
Adam’s amica,
Susan
Welcome Elio!! That is so cool that you stopped by.
Adam
That was cool that Elio blogged - but he did not like your tie!!!!! It is also very nice to see so many new bloggers - Congrats on a great job Adam
Dumb question - How do we refresh on this new blog???
Morning all– real quick here as I head out– I too had to get my morning wake-up– Adam’s blog-
Patty– your last name– LOL– TOO many consonants! Even the guy had to look it a few times to make sure the name was right when making the label!
LDG–
Did the earthquakes stop? We just to get a few of these in Mexico City- I wasn’t around for the big one years ago–
John-
I thought I had seen alll the email jokes as I get these all the time– Nope- yours was a first!
Max-
xxxx
Terri– this is set-up like Greta’s– except sometimes she will have several pages– so I better watch my posting so this doesn’t happen here– Let the others make it happen!! LOL
ok- this was fun- time to go!
And how is Adam today? Fox flashed in the News watch about Ciudad Juarez and the drug cartel– showed the amount of deaths in the last year–
I’m NOT at all surprised by SDSU getting an on-campus / frat / sor / dorm drug bust …
SDSU is a party school … 25 yrs ago, it was a party school … It’s still a party school …
So, when is there going to be a drug bust at UCSB as they’re a big party school too ???
Jen in Hotlanta - IF you’re out here, go change your teams …
Jen-
While they can’t comment for obvious reasons, I get the feeling that there are currently other operations ongoing on other campus locations. Who knows which states/schools, but the DEA expects to be contacted after this success. Also…did you guys see that Elio blogged?
Adam
@John
were there to be so, yes!
@All
ok, need to be out of here for a while. Looking forward to the next update on the Thread topic, and further fun, soonest. Be well and safe.
((departs))
LDG………. all those pianos in the house must make a good earthquake alarm…….
@Max and Patty
I agree with the agreeing… er… well, you know what I mean. Here’s hoping she stays!
@KC-Fresno
No worries about the house. Our builder tells a funny one to visitors asking about the 2×6 construction: “The floor frame is so strong, you could put three pianos in the living room and not violate building code… moreover, as we used the same floor frame for the 2nd floor, you could put three more pianos in the bedroom… if you like pianos that much” ((silly grin on my part))
Good mornin all
LDG - so glad to hear all is well with you, princess, and the “kids” -was a bit worried about the new house
Patty - have a great day off
John - being a blonde - I still liked your joke - always good to start the day with a laugh
I agree Max!
Adam
I saw your interview from San Diego with Greta. Nice stripe suit! but the tie was a little WILD. Good Job.
ELIO!!!!!
Thanks so much for the post. This is the suit that you tailored.
Adam
@Avi
((nods)) You’ve got the picture, re Lebanon. Did you see this piece from AFP about the Saudis formalizing support for the Government?

re: Iran making accusations. — yaddayadda. Serves them right for storing a bunch of ordinance in a masjid and leaving the fuzes in.
re: Ya Libnan. — Got that one, thanks though. I also use Daily Star for local news from there. make this a link: w w w.dailystar.com.lb …if you don’t already have it.
LDG,
Check this link out…. its English News from Lebenon good info http://yalibnan.com/
Thanks Avi for the link!
Adam
LDG,
hezbollah has inflitrated the police and army and is using this inflitartion to take over areas of Beiurt and most importantly the AirPort road which of last read Hezbollah has taken over. What they dont want to do is take over the govt and army for one sole reason they dont want to be under international law they are going to take until they get to that point. We have to watch this because this could easily spill over into Israel and the middle east as a whole.
Also Syria might wanna send troops in …… the Lebenon stuff eventhough its internal is now turning external now and we all must watch it because the GOVT headed by Sinoria is backed by the West and if he fulls we are all in big trouble…
also Iran has officially accused the US and England of being behind the mosque bombing in Tehran last month….
I see Tamera is back. I think she should stay
‘morning, All
Brief visit here for now. Had to catch John’s morning wake-up joke…
@Avi
Not much in that story, but here it is in full. I know you understand about the “communications network” from other, more detailed souces:

…here’s hoping the Lebanese Army has the wherewithall to pull it off.
@Patty

16:35 Nasrallah: Lebanese government has declared war against Hezbollah (Reuters)
It is high time that the whole city of San Diego took its drug problem very seriously.
As an example, I have a son who got hooked on Methamphetamines 15 years ago and ended up damaging his brain as a result. The only way he could finally get and stay clean was to leave the area and go back east. Because of his mental condition resulting from long term drug abuse, he lives on the fringes of society, unable to hold a meanful job or function properly in society. I have been aware that it is impossible for most meth addicts in San Diego to get and stay clean very long, because in any neighborhood, it is just a matter of going a few blocks to get it.
Look at the high incidence of homelessness, domestic violence and restaining orders in San Diego and in most cases it can be traced back to substance abuse, especially crystal meth.
The drug wars in Tijuana are rampant with scores of bodies turning up on the streets every week.
Are we to believe that Homeland Security and our Police Departments can keep it from spilling over the border into San Diego ?
For those of you who have never had a loved one and your entire family destroyed by these drugs, I ask you all to wake up and learn, because this battle for our kids lives and souls is worth fighting for !
It is time for Americans to wake up and understand that this also is terrorism and probably a much bigger threat to us as a people than any terrorism from abroad. The reason is an attact on the very core of our society which is the American family. Lets join together like the parents of this girl from San Diego and have zero tolerance for drugs in America .
who died of an overdose
this is AMERICA! THE SUPPLY ISN’T THE PROBLEM,ITS THE DEMAND! THE WAR ON DRUGS CAN’T BE WON BECAUSE AMERICANS LOVE DRUGS,LEGAL OR NOT! JUST LEGALIZE AND TRY TO CONTROL IT! STOP SENDING MY TAX MONEY SO SOME DEA AGENT CAN BUY A NEW SUV!
It’s been a while since I insulted the blonde readers of the blog………..so here it goes:
A blonde (obviously) went out to her mail box and looked in……she looked surprised, closed the door and went back into the house. A few minutes later she went back out…….looked in the mailbox again, closed the door and went back inside.
She did this several more times when her neighbor who was watching her said,” You must be expecting some very important mail the way you keep checking your mailbox every few minutes.”
The blonde answered,” No, I’m just working on my computer and it keeps telling me I have mail.”
I hate it when someone’s daughter or son dies because they were idiots. I don’t know her but, I don’t think that someone held this little girl down and forced her to ingest this poison. This problem we have with narcotics should have been handled and done away with 50 yrs ago. You can thank Jimmy Carter and his dope headed son Chip for our descent into the cesspool of poison. For those of you that STILL think it’s no big deal open your ears and listen to this, a japanese researcher has found that even small amounts of Marijuana can and will trigger the defective gene that causes Bi-Polorism. Nice huh, you are your offspring can face a lifetime of medication and violence. There are NO good narcotics unless they are tested by a REAl lad. and even then you are taking you life in your hands. But then again if you are in college you know everything and all this is some old fool blowing smoke, right. Well one more thing you may concider, the affects of just Marijuana can jump a generation and your own kids can pay for YOUR stupidity. This includes a study done in the 70s by Columbia U. that showed a “change in genetic strands” and “Defects in genetic makeup”. But then these morons knew all this,,they were just “trying to earn a living” right. And these are our future leaders,,,SCREW-UM!!!!!!!!!!!
Sometimes I wonder, are the feds ‘really’ interested in the nation’s drug problem, or do they, at times, also promote the sale and use of “dangerous” drugs………or is this just another example of a major US corporation controlling a branch of our government for it’s own financial gain…………

I love the newest comments being on top…once it hits a hundred ( or something like that )
Great Job!
@Susan-AZ
I think we’ll get more POD’s and trivia and such.
Rest Well. I’m off to my rounds for the day, so I’m out too. Be back on ‘your’ tomorrow.
Be well and safe, All
((departs))
Thanks LDG–
I wrote Tochigi down here amongst all my other notes I have–
What was the fear about this new way of posting? It is not that drastic of a change– but if Adam can’t put up a POD, this is where I will draw the line!!!! Is this about the only change?
What has amazed me is how I got approved– must be some new person working in New York because I am sure the rest are like– no, no, no!!!
Well– time to go to bed– I miss the trivia!!
That drug thing is big!!! Hope word gets around to the other Universities so this can stop! I wonder how ASU fares in dealing drugs? I know when I was in school, half of this stuff was not around or as obvious!
xxx
@Susan-AZ
Glad you liked the link!
Where I live, generally, written in roman lettering: Tochigi-ken Tochigi-shi, or you can say Tochigi Prefecture, Tochigi City. It is in the zone TOCHIGI KEN NANBU on the zone map.
nanbu = southern region
hokubu = northern region
“How far away are you from…?” — Gunma Prefecture is the next Prefecture West of us, about 30 miles in a straight line west from here. But, Gunma is a pretty good sized Prefecture and getting over the Northern Region is about an hour and a half by car, mostly on the expressways.
Temperature reporting here is all in Centigrade, today we’ll hit 24 C, so about 75 F. Nice day, light wind so far.
Hope that helped!
LDG–
I had to look up the word- truncation-
Your earthquake link is great– I looked for your home in the weather forecast? Where is it again you live so I can write it down– I know it is in the Me and Max thread but that thread is too hard to get into– the script-
How far away are you from GUNMA KEN HOKUBU ?
Did I read the temps right? the numbers on the bottom of each day’s forecast? Looks like the weather as an average in many places is 60–
aDAM YOU NEED TO LOOK DEEPER INTO THIS CARTEL MESS AND READ THE INDICTMENT AND THE BILL OF PARTICULARS THERE IS ANOTHER STORY BEHIND THIS MESS.
Jesse-
We’ll take a look.
Adam
Max–
I just open all the pages (show all) and go through the posts the old way– Greta’s has her too in pages– It confuses me to see the newer ones up on the top so I just show all-
I need to do this as I have to find LDG’s earthquake link–
Hey my post showed up! I am happy as a peach pie! Gotta get back to defensive driving stinking course! I think the other url has a snag, I will have to edit that on my blog!
Hmm, yes, once there are more than one page it flips it over.
Addenda:
the sort order (top=latest or bottom=latest) also changes whether it is showing the thread after you just commented, or are reloading from the base addy.
hrm.
@Max
Also be careful of the “only shows 20 posts” or some such truncation. Otherwise you can easily miss earlier (or later) comments is a really active thread. That can be overruled with the end flag /all-comments at the end of the addy. Like this:
http://onthescene.blogs.foxnews.com/2008/05/07/drug-bust-101/all-comments
Ahh, now it’s newest comment at the top, this will be confusing for a while.
Hey there you are Adam!!!
what a story!!! Great job!!! I am so glad this bust happened! Good message to be sent!
6 fraternities? and 75 students–
SD Native-
wow– what a story!!!!
The story is on right now with Greta!
Adam–
I ordered three more bottles of wine to be sent to Everett–
Each order has the Adam bottle– I like the label– I think it is cool! LOL
xxxx
Patty–
Keep your eyes open for Tuesday– the box went out and I threw in a bonus too– You and Max are now owners of these!!!
Boy is your last name hard to spell– How the heck do you pronunce it?
Do you remember one of Adam’s friends, Dan, posting back when– I have been looking for him and i can’t find him in any of the threads!
Adam-
Karen, your second mom, paid you a visit in one of the Ireland threads–
I am going to order three more bottles of wine to be sent to Everett for my hermanos! LOL
Here’s more:
The last time I was there, a few years ago, I went into the Living and Learning Center to have a look around after my daughter was attacked. The bulletin board had been set on fire the weekend before, there were vomit and urine smells in the hallways and you could see open/used alcohol containers in the rooms. The RAs had a “so what?” attitude. Could it be that they didn’t want to make any more work for themselves than they had to, or was it because they had to live in the same building with the younger students and didn’t want to appear to be harsh for fear of retaliation? I wasn’t stopped or checked for anything untoward when I went in the building. There were many students that looked the worse for wear. I sincerely doubt that these kids just out of high school can really understand the ramifications of underage drinking, drugs and behaviors while under the influence and what actually happens when a person is arrested. The young man I know who was arrested for drugs @ SDSU thought all he had to do was pay a fine, but the reality ended up costing his family many thousands of dollars to reduce the charges. He’s still going to have a record. His parents thought they were putting him in a safe place on campus- even paid more for the service- but in actuality they just put a sheep in with the wolves. Talk about convenience… the drug dealer was right upstairs, the young man was stressed, there was pressure, influence of alcohol… way to go, SDSU and Dr. Weber! You sure know how to give a kid a full education, don’t you?
DRUGS—- ALOT OF THAT HERE IN iSRAEL…… ITS BECOME very popular amongst people my age…
a few kids in my school last year got in big a big mess with the popo….. gotta watch out sometimes at parties thast the hooka doesnt contain some un kosher stuff……….
Avi-
Stay away from that stuff as you I am sure already know.
Adam
@Adam Housley
“Thanks for the heads up.” — a pleasure to be of service, as always.
No more current reports on the Earthquakes available as of now, so that is all on this for now. Back to our regularly scheduled ‘blog…
@Adam Housley
“Have to be your pics. Local media we aren’t allowed to post…” — understood. I have yet to come up with a single report of actual structure damage, but if something breaks as the morning goes on, I can make a little side trip on my rounds later in the day.
If you happen to have a Japanese-literate staffer available, here’s the Yomiuri Newspaper’s story on the Weather Service morning press conference. Seems they counted a total of 12 contributory earthquakes in the flurry that included 2 at mag 6.3+ and the notable at mag 6.7+ :
http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/national/news/20080508-OYT1T00233.htm?from=top
It was pretty fun in the 70’s too!
Off-topic
Followup on Japan Earthquake.
Morning news had no pictures of damage, or reports of any. As usual when we get a good sized one, they did show video feed from inside the nearest NHK broadcast center… lots of monitors shaking, light fixtures swinging… dramatic, but inconsequential.
The best report I have found in English so far is this, from Reuters. They seem to have gotten most all of it right, IMO:

LDG-
Thanks for the heads up.

Adam: I know they often go home for the summer. I was just joking about your use of the word ‘trips’. Since that’s what would happen if they were to take all the drugs
KC: My flu is almost completely gone.
My intestinal condition was better, but it got worse as i couldn’t work out while i had the flu. But i’m starting again so i should be better soon.
@Adam Housley
Looks for now like things are calmer. Re Pictures: I’ll see what I can hunt up. You would want those to be personal photos, or pulled of local media reports? Either are possible. Still just 0800 here now, so the business day is just getting started.
“As a native Californian….. I have felt my share.” — Kindred spirit there. I was on the SF Peninsula for Loma Prieta.
Thank you most kindly for your concern!
LDG-
Have to be your pics. Local media we aren’t allowed to post. I was in the Northridge quake, my family felt Loma Prieta, I was away when it hit. My brother was playing a high school soccer game and remembers watching all the parents fall over in their lawn chairs. We had friends on the Bay Bridge when it collapsed. Thankfully they weren’t hurt.

Thanks for the concerns about the Earthquakes (we had 4 in less than an hour, worth reporting). Things here are fine. The area at Motegi (where the Indy Japan Race was held, if you saw that story) actually was the hot spot for effects, but the quakes themselves were all offshore and deep.
here’s a link to see about earthquakes in Japan, courtesy the Japan Weather Service.

Actually, we were going to blame Retread for causing the Earthquakes…

Good luck and let us know if they get any worse or if anything happens. Also, any pics are always welcome and I can post them here. As a native Californian….. I have felt my share.

While I feel sorrow over the loss of the lives of two students to drug overdose I totally disagree with the notion of ruining the lives of low level college drug dealers and recreational drug users by placing them behind bars. Those two students were responsible for their own drug use. The dealers and users around them never forced them to put cocaine up their noses or in their arms. These are non violent crimes committed by non violent criminals for the most part. Exactly how violent will these individuals be after spending several years in prison? Does anyone here really believe that prison reforms or rehabilitates people. It forces people to join prison gangs and develop violent tendencies in order to ensure their survival. How much more of a threat will these individuals be to society once they get out of prison. There would be no black market for these drugs, no money for drug dealers to make, and no violent gang turf wars if these drugs were legalized, taxed, and sold by the government in tightly regulated doses. Would some people still die? Yes just as people die of alchohol and tobacco use every day in this country, but the lure of illicit behavior would no longer be present and the idea of using these drugs would be far less glamorous. In the end less people would die and fewer lives would be ruined by these drugs. Read Jason Whitlocks article in Playboy this month entitled “The Black KKK” to gain an understanding of just how negatively our nations war on drugs has affected our society. Prison culture is rapidly being integrated into mainstream culture. We now have a full 1% of our adult population behind bars. That’s 2.3 million people a great many of whom are there for non violent drug crimes. Locking these people up doesn’t solve any problems, it creates them and then puts them off for us to deal with at some future date when they are released. China with it’s 1 billion plus population run by a totalitarian government has fewer people in prison than we do. That’s got to be a red flag that something is seriously wrong with the way we’re running our criminal justice system. The illicit drug trade and the domestic terrorism it sponsors (via gang violence) have claimed far more lives than violent extremists in this country ever could. Somebody in this country needs to tell Uncle Sam to stop turning so many of our citizens over to the whims of sadistic prison guards and prison gangs or we’re just going to be dealing with increasing numbers of violent ex cons flooding our streets with drugs, violence, and racism.
Welcome jule’g and jeff curtis!
Its nice to see “newbies” post.
Susan…bah, your gonna make me feel guilty about the pkg. *L*
EVERYONE-
WHEW…I am caught up. I went back through and made a ton of comments on this thread.
Adam
Max
Both I guess - I read recently you stated you had the flu, but I also know you have bouts with your intestinal condition which Iam sure you try to keep a close watch on
KC: Are you talking about the Flu or the intestinal condition?
Max
You have to be careful with that crud. The minute you think you are over it and feeling better, it zaps you right back and you are sick again. Lots of fluids and lots of rest and sleep is the best thing for you.
KC: yes, thanks.
Still not too good some of the time though.
Max
I think so too - just had to give him a bad time
BTW - are you feeling better now??
KC: i suspect Adam was just joking
Max
You got it.
Adam
Susan: I’m going to get a present for you tomorrow, i’ll send the card at the same time.
Max–
because I was the only one awake– LOL–
xxxxx
Did you get the card out? I have to get going on the project! LOL
I am just getting Patty’s present out!
I have just seen the pic of the beautiful young lady that died from an OD of coke and booze. What a waste of a young promising life. While we all must be held responsible for our life, I for one would like to see those responsible and convicted of selling this crap put away for a long long time. I have two kids in college at present and am BEGGING those of that age to take a step back and consider what you are doing to your body when you introduce too much. Think of the parents of that young woman - how do you think they feel? Would you like to put your mom and dad thru that? By all means have fun, enjoy life, but hold it dearly if you enter into too much of what you consider “fun”. We need you kids to live a full life so you can enjoy what is in store. Please take care of yourselves!
Adam.
So great to find your BLOG! I was checking on fox for information about the San Diego Bust as my brother is down there in school. Great information. Jule’ (from V.H.S, 1989).
So wonderful to see your doing so well
