This Sunday is a special post because it involves sports in a way, but it also highlights such amazing generosity. Here in Los Angeles for the last 37 years many men and women from LAPD, volunteers from around the community and dollar upon dollar from corporations, have gone to the LAPD Police Memorial Golf Tournament at Rancho Park Golf Course. It’s an open house of sorts and at the same time, a way to raise money to support families of fallen officers and also those seriously injured in the line of duty. In recent years, my colleague Anita Vogel and myself have been the so-called celebrity announcers on the 9th tee, but this year I subbed on the course and Tamera stepped into my spot. It is a great time and fantastic day and cause. Here is a little video I put together, watch until the end when the SWAT Team delivers the first ball to the family of fallen SWAT member Randy Simmons, recently killed in the line of duty. This also gives us a moment to reflect. What amazing moments or things do you see combined with sports.

As long as it is Sports Sunday here, just a general sports post to add…
Penguins vs. Flyers for the NHL Eastern Conference Finals, Game 5
Pittsburgh — 6
Philly — doughnut
Hope you got to watch, because it was a fun day to be a Pens fan. Pens take the series 4 games to 1, and are next to play for Lord Stanley’s Cup.
I’m sure the SWAT team felt honored to be able to remember their comrade in that way, but wished they didn’t have to.
What a cool fundraiser! Adam this is a different kind of mix, than I am used to. That is a great way to showcase what the LAPD do and allow the supporters to play a game they love. I love it that they give the first ball to a family of a fallen hero.
ok adam-
finally something I can like about professional sports.
well done
Good morning everyone – hope all had a great weekend – heat wave here so not very enjoyable
Adam – great video and fundraiser – thanks for sharing
Great way to honor our fallen heros
Adam……what a fantastic article. I think events like this are successful because of your support and ability to raise public awareness.
Thanks for coming out.
Pete-
Any time! We had a great time and for such a good cause, but boy was it HOT. The heat wave baked the course and all of us.
Adam
That was a COOL video– I would have fun– the SWAT — LOL– I like their gof cart! LOL
I got my laugh– those cars (car show) are all cool!! Pretty trees too!
The only sports I watched yesterday was a half hour of Hannity– He was talking about global warming hypocrites– his list: Travolta, Streisand, Jolie, Leonardo, and Madonna! I am easily amused! Streisand has gotten a little zaftig in her older years!
p.s. Great article! And great cause! I wonder if philosocop was there?
Susan: I sent everything out, i hope you like it.
Max–
whatever you sent out, I will like and keep forever! I cherish memories! So I never throw anything away even if is falling apart as long as there is a story behind it–
Randal Simmons– thanks LDG– I remember now– I think the cop site had a story on him too–
Adam– Tamera took over your spot? HMMM? Why is she not in the video?
Susan-
Because we only passed by the area a couple of times and it was sooooo darn hot, everyone was in the shade and the video would have been dark.
Adam
what is that silver gizmo in front of the police department’s bomb squad vehicle? the one that looks like a small howitzer?
LDG—
I definitely remember the Simmons story– as a matter of fact, Rod, who use to post here, mentioned this all happened close by his house! I just got done reading your links– thanks for refreshening my memory!
@all–
Have a good day!
Hi everybody-
Great fund raiser indeed! The SWAT teams delivery of the ball was impressive.
Here in the Cincinnati area we have the Flying Pig Marathon. It benefits over thirty charities with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training Program being their main beneficiary.
One of the non-profits that benefit is Senior Services of Northern KY which I am a volunteer for and also volunteer at the race. Based on the number volunteers they get, the race gives X number of much needed dollars for their meals on wheels program and other services they provide.
These types of sporting events are vital to all types of fund raising efforts and bring out the good in people. It’s a good thing!

MOST DEFINITELY SO!!!! Lots of serotonin being released!!! Giving is such a fun thing to do!!!
Adam
Was it as HOT as it is here in Fresno???? 102 degrees every day now since last Thursday. Today, again 102 – Absolutely miserable, so I can imagine you chasing the shade and hoping for a bit of breeze even tho hot
KC-
We have overcast conditions this morning….FINALLY some cool. Good luck out in the valley.
Adam
Susan: It’s a bomb disarming robot, likely made by IRobot. The company donated quite a number of them to the US military for use on IEDs in Iraq.
Susan: I mean the thing in the video, not what i’m sending you.
That was great how the SWAT team delivered the ball! I like sporting events like this…
Great video Adam!
when i was a little kid i wanted to be a swat guy yet alone a fireman lol……
Great story adam.
Thanks for sharing it.
Always a good thing when people come together to help others!! Nice to know it is still common!
Avi…you’d make a good negotiator
Flying pigs?….that could lead to a few choice comments, but i’ll leave it alone! ha ha
Hi all, bye all. No time to play.
Avi–
Welcome home – good to see you had a safe & enjoyable trip.
Thx for the pictures you posted on the other thread….you where click happy taking pictures!
Max– I’m sure Susan wouldn’t mind if you sent her a robot….lol
Patty–
Cincinnati is ‘Porkopolis’–”The nickname Porkopolis was coined around 1835, when Cincinnati was the country’s chief hog packing center, and herds of pigs traveled the streets.”
I only go there when I have to. Ha!
KC–
Don’t touch that thermostat Susan!!
The heat sounds good to me — troubles getting into the 70’s here.
Headed to AZ in two weeks
So I’m hoping it lasts–sorry.
Jen: wouldn’t you be ok if it went cold and heated up[ for your arrival

Digression, but other reports state that the condition was mild and the good senator was able to maintain control of his Cadillac, veer off of the road and back onto the sidewalk (his preferred lane of travel) and drive all the way to the hospital….without spilling even a drop of his bourbon.
Sgt-
WOW….you are quickly becoming funnier than John.
Adam
Good Gosh it is hot here, much hotter than CA for that matter Adam!
Sgt I will get that link in a second, I am buzzing in and out.
Heads up TD and my rat terrior is on JD’s blog, another sweet dog called Rolex is there too!
Adam dear–
quit your belly aching– guess where I live? ARIZONA!!! It is so frigging hot today and probably tomorrow and the day after and the week after and then the month after– LOL!!!!
Dang Max– that robot would have been cool to have!
Jen– AC is on– Trust me, when you get here, you will get sick of how hot it is and hug me for having the AC on! LOL — Thanks to you coming, I have done so much spring cleaning– I am leaving the spices for you to do!
]
We had the fire trucks out here yesterday evening– the ditch I have mentioned on the blog a couple of times- —- big huge fire– I have my eyes on two kids here!! Eyes big and wide open!!!!!!! And so do a couple of my other neighbors! I didn’t see them do it but they were around that area– and very curious when the fire trucks showed up– I watched them closely to see how they were acting– and gut tells me they might have been the cause– they love to play with smoke bombs– and that ditch is so dry and full of twigs and dry branches- I stared the kids down and when the cops pulled up, I walked over to talk to the one officer and I saw some fear in the kid’s eyes) – I told the officer what my gut feeling was, so he got walked over to the boys as it was about 9:00 and asked them where they lived- the boys took off and went home– one lives across the street from me and the other next door- How unfortuntate for them! LOL
sgt–
Ted- your link– It sounds like he might have had a series of mini strokes? Maybe? I have just heard bits and parts — that is about the extent of me and Kennedy’s story–
hmm– sgt- your link says one seizure and I heard elsewhere, Mr. Kennedy had a few! Well, I hope he is doing well– end of that story-
sgt—– Derek—
pssst- hush- do you think if T. Kennedy, done the road, on his way out, is going to see Chappaquiddick Bridge or Rainbow Bridge?
Susan: if i were to send you a robot i think one that cleans your house would be more useful for you
They don’t cost much either.
Susan don’t get me started, it is as hard to be nice for me as the Dixie Chicks!
Farc captive calls for surrender
Karina said her unit was cut off from Farc’s leadership
A top commander of the Farc rebels in Colombia has urged other rebels to follow her example and surrender.
Nelly Avila Moreno, known as Karina, handed herself in to soldiers over the weekend in the latest blow to Farc.
She said Farc was falling apart under pressure from the military and growing desertions. Several key leaders have been killed in recent months.
Karina has been blamed for a string of murders and abductions in the north-western Antioquia region.
Her surrender is a coup for President Alvaro Uribe, who made her a priority target for the security forces in 2002, the BBC’s Jeremy McDermott says.
The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or Farc, has been fighting to overthrow the government for more than 40 years.
‘Not bloodthirsty’
“To my comrades: Change this life that your are leading in the guerrilla group and re-enter society with the government’s reinsertion plan,” she said at a news conference called by the army in Medellin.
Her unit had been whittled down to fewer than 50 fighters – down from several hundred – when she surrendered.
Karina said she had been out of contact with Farc’s seven-member ruling secretariat for two years.
“The decision [to surrender] was made because of the pressure by the army in the area,” she said.
She said she was shaken by the killing of secretariat member Ivan Rios by one of his bodyguards in March.
The bodyguard had cut off Rios’s hand and turned it in with his laptop computer in return for a reward.
The government has offered bounties for top rebel commanders. Karina’s was $1m (£512,000). Two weeks ago, President Uribe appealed to her to surrender.
She contacted the army who sent a helicopter to pick up her and another guerrilla, known as Michin.
She denied involvement in the 1983 murder of President Uribe’s father and said she was not the “bloodthirsty” woman the authorities described her as.

The united states soldier is a unique person, he is sworn to defend liberty and freedom, he protects free speech, he protects freedom of religion, he gives entirely of himself. He is a sheepdog, always watching and waiting for the wolf. His life is spent preparing for war, fighting the war, and then refitting for the next war.
He gives all of his freedoms, so that others can have theirs.
Because of this, he often views a book as a bunch of pieces of paper, while others view it as a Bible or Koran. He views his hands as tools and extensions of his weapon. he views his troops as his family and his leaders as his parents. He will lay down his life for his friends, he will carry a buddy through he!! and back, he views dinner as energy, not conversation time. He views sleep as a luxury not to be wasted. He believes deep in his heart of a greater being but he does not claim to have exclusive rights one, he keeps his prayers short and silent. In his quest for honing his skills, he is practicing, tightening his group, conditioning his body, expanding his mental capacity to withstand pain and suffering.
A young US soldier uses a Koran as target practice, and all the Iraqi soldiers are ready to chop his head off. He was probably using it just to “see what would happen” while tightening that group.
I am sooooooooooo tired at muslims being offended by soldiers that are giving them the right to complain.
maybe it is a bad day for me, but I am just ready to declare game on with the entire muslim world, lets drop leaflets depicting Mohammad engaged in erotic pleasures with a goat, use the Koran as toilet paper, and say “you gotta problem? step up, and lets do it”
After the dust clears, we can drill oil anywhere we want to.
EVERYONE-
I went back through and made some comments in this thread and I posted a new Tech Tuesday as well. Also, I am going to the latest Chavez thread, there’s a new comment from a lady who thinks I am lying through my teeth.
Adam
@Sgt Shot
“The united states soldier is a unique person…” — He (generic) is. And what keeps you alive and gets the job done out ‘over there’ is not what folks back home want to see or even think about. That is why somedays back in the world “we” (folks like you and I) don’t fit in, and for the love of heaven can’t explain to the people around why “we” just did something.
breathe, brother… and when you are back to calm do try to remember that symbolism is vastly more important to religious traditionalists than to “modern” religious folks. It hasn’t been all that long, in human experince, since Bibles were so valuable that it was illegal for a non-clergyman to even possess one. It has been only about 50 years since Roman Catholicism even acknowleged that people could be of other religions and still accepted as pious people.
So let’s save it for the enemy, and not go blue-on-blue about that kind of thing.
@Adam Housley
“…the latest Chavez thread, there’s a new comment…”
oh, this ought to be good. ((goes and looks))
LDG-
breathing, breathing, breathing…feeling better, and very glad that “we” is still an option for me. Very glad to know that you are out there, and someone, somewhere (you) understands someone (me) that cannot fully explain himself a lot of the time.
You are right. Thank you.
@Sgt Shot
Any time, any time. Just remember to winch me back in if I run off on something, eh?
((wry grin))

Susan: haha :big:
I’ve not seen them for sale here, i saw them in costco in atlanta.
Hey Adam, we had the pleasure of meeting you at #12 I think. We were the family all wearing Chicago sports apparel — but I just want to say again how much we appreciate FOX news and all of you guys. It was a joy to see all the support for the LAPD – my youngest son is LAPD.
Thanks also for the coverage of the fire in Santa Cruz – we have friends there and your coverage has been helpful.
Good job!!
