The Scoop on American Idol

I still can’t believe it has been so many years since I first covered American Idol at the then new Kodak Theater on the corner of Hollywood and Highland. My parents had told me about the show, but we couldn’t see it in Pakistan at the time, so I had no idea what it was all about.

As we all know it has become a sensation and a tough ticket in Hollywood. Every year since I have covered ‘Idol’ at least one night during the run and have been to a couple of finals, but this one was absolutely amazing.

All the special guests and I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised about the quality of this years contestants.

Sometimes this season it may have seemed like they were all average, but after watching them in person for the finale….they just were all that good.

In years past there’s always those who got further than they should have, but this crew could flat out sing. Selling them….some may be tough, but as voices go, quite impressive.

That said, this year I kinda forgot to ask for tickets and get on the list, so Tamera used her connections and got some great seats.

I’ll give some scoop once I get some sleep, you know about what it was like behind the scenes and on the red carpet, but in the meantime…here are some photos.

Chuck Denton snapped the one of the two David’s and Tamera and I on the red carpet. I took the other two using his D-50 Nikon while he shot Anita Vogel’s live shots.

This photo is of us as we entered the theater, while afterwards I captured the”Idol Guru” as some like to call him, also known as producer Mike Waco. He makes it all happen for all of the Fox affiliates, Fox News Channel, Radio, internet, you get the idea.

Then you’ve got Anita interviewing Tamera after the show, I believe this live was for our Fox station in Birmingham.

Again more photo’s and stories coming tomorrow and in the meantime….what did you think about the outcome?!

I just love it when I am here first! It so rarely happens anymore. Adam you are burning the candle my friend! I do love David Cook, technically I think he is far more talented. Archie will have a following that is for sure, but he needs to “mature” vocally and mentally first. This was a great outcome for these two.

Comment by FL Sunshine

I think Cook was the right choice. David A. is a sweet kid but needs to grow out of that “really? you like me? gee thanks!” thing that he does. I really like him but that’s a bit annoying. Was he really that surprised each time he made it through another round or each time the judges gave him good complements? Both Davids were good but Cook is more of a rocker which appeals to more people I think. It was great to see some of the other top 12 last night like Michael and Brooke for example. I figure we will see plenty of David A. too, I expect he will get a contract and I hope some of the others will as well.

Adam & Sgt Shot – this is a very upsetting story. A soldier was killed in his barracks in GA. My first cousin is in this unit. I haven’t seen this on the national news. How did the murderer make it into basic training? Seems there would have been signs of problems. http://abclocal.go.com/kfsn/story?section=news/local&id=6155263
I worry about my cousin and the other’s in this unit. I don’t know if they saw any of it or what. Would be hard to deal mentally with this while in basic training and getting very little sleep I would think.

FL Sunshine: I saw something on Geraldo a while ago about gangsters joining the military.
They will send in young men who have no rap sheet, so background checks don’t discover them. The do it to get training with weapons and tactics to bring back onto the streets.
Apprently MySpace has been a great help in identifying gangsters, since they often put up photos of themselves throwing up gangsigns (idiots), which causes the Military Police to investigate them and often expunge them from the US military.

“American Idol?”……not my cup of tea I’m afraid ( I like beer ). Now, if the higher ups at Fox want to promote “American Loser”, or “American Dirt Bag”, then they’ll gain another viewer…………Wait a minute, isn’t Jerry Springer still on Fox?

Comment by John

Sunshine……….there was a report out late last year that suggested that the military had lowered the standards for applicants wanting to join the armed services so that recruiters could make their quotas. Unfortunately this means that the military is overlooking certain criminal records (mainly misdemeanors) that an applicant may have. But, as in any background check, certain ‘bad apples’ will fall through the cracks I’m afraid.

Sunshine-

Ft Benning is an entirely different Basic Training, than the others. It is the home of the infantry, the queen of battle, sand hill, malone ranges, cattle cars, marching 100’s of miles and never wearing out your boots because the sand is so soft, digging fighting positions in georgia clay, every biting bug known to man, nut buster obstacle courses, back breaking training…fort benning is the closest thing to he!! for training.

It is all male, females are not allowed in the infantry.

The job is simple, they WILL BREAK YOU. It is a requirement, you must be broken, physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually. Only after you are broken, can you be rebuilt.

The first 2 weeks you are still being broken, 100’s of push-ups a day, 30 seconds to eat a meal (if that), running everywhere you go, 30 min of sleep a night, getting yelled at constantly, never doing anything right, more push-ups, being rushed everywhere, we didn’t even shower for our first 3 weeks and then when we did you were given 10 seconds to get in lather and rinse.

The first 2 weeks, are an absolute horror, but they are preparing you for real horror, they are making you mentally tough enough to withstand combat, or they are breaking you. Combat vets like myself look back on benning with fond memories, because we have seen the real bad stuff. During this time a new recruit cannot imagine life being any worse and they are literally at the breaking point.

Soldiers are encouraged to fight, I can assure you at 2 weeks, they had not even started to learn hand to hand combat, and the fights I was in (yes, I was in 2 full on fist fights in basic) were normally resolved quickly.

This story is tragic, but in the effort to keep numbers in the military, they are allowing people that are older, with criminal back grounds, and with prior drug use, into the ranks. Before, anyone with a criminal record, prior drug use or past the age of 36 were barred from enlisting.

The drill sergeants are supposed to identify the ones not hacking it and get them out of there, we lost at least 20. This kid slipped through the cracks, and the results were tragic.

Benning…Follow Me!!!

It is a shame that this happened, and not only is a good kid dead, but the kid that did the stabbing will spend the majority of his life in a military prison.

It does not surprise me as it may surprise some of you, it did happen, but when you guys think about basic training, particularly infantry basic training, I do not want you to think about boys clubs, scout programs, campouts, or anything romantic or inspiring. Infantry school is turning young men into killers, you pray for war nightly, you condition your body to be stronger, faster, tougher than the enemy so you can kill him, you hone your warrior skills to kill people, you push your mind to out think the enemy and kill him, everything you do is in preparation to kill. that is the cold hard truth.

So when you have 240 clean shaven young men, covered in sweat and dirt, standing at rigid attention, not flinching, only awaiting the next order and the first sergeant calls out: WHAT MAKES THE GREEN GRASS GROW?

Comment by sgt shot

and the reply is, all 240 young men in unison:

BLOOD BLOOD BLOOD, makes the green grass grow

Well, you can start to understand the awesome tragedy that is training warriors. in a perfect world, we would not need to do that, but in the real world, we still need people capable of pulling the trigger.

I guess these guys will eventually see death of a fellow soldier at some time in their career – you just wonder and think “they couldn’t have been prepared for it yet”

Adam…jen and i knew that was you the camera flashed by!

How totally amazing it must have been to sit there. I was sort of dreading the whole 2 hours, wondering just what it was they were going to do to stretch that time out. But i was pleasantly surprised.
I called the winner weeks ago, didnt really expect it to happen though! *L*
They will all show up somewhere, lots of talent, for many choices of people.

Tamera…you look like a goddess! Adam…you better snatch her up!!! *BG*

sunshine-

I am sure it was somewhat traumatic, I saw an instructor blown in half with a live grenade at benning, and it was traumatic. I am sure the kids that saw the blood and body had similar reactions. I have killed with a knife, and it is an absolute horrid way to kill or be killed, it is not quick, it is not painless, it is loud, bloody and violent.

As traumatic as it was for them, these future grunts are going to see more, they are going to enter a world that is upside down, violent, and 1000’s of people are trying to kill you. They are going to be blown up, they are going to kill, they are going to have friends get killed, and some of them will die. They are going to say goodbye to good friends, long before they should have to, they are going to cry until the laugh and laugh until they cry. They will be physically sickened for the rest of their lives by memories that have not made yet.

It is the life of a grunt and a life they have chosen, but the coin is two sided. For all of the bad that comes with it, there is good, if you know where to look for it. They are mentally tougher than 99% of the population, they will make friends that last lifetimes, they will face fear and tragedy head on and they will conquer it, with that comes self confidence. They will serve their nation and will be proud of that forever. They will be disciplined for life. They will become men’s men, something lacking in todays soft society..they will look you in the eye when talking, they will smile and mean it, they will shake your hand firmly, they will carry themselves well. They will mean what they say and say what they mean. They will be comfortable negotiating with words or fists and know the time for both. They will protect the weaker and honor the older.

They will forever in their life be grunts, whatever the obstacle, whatever the challenge, whatever the situation, they will look around and say the words….Follow Me!

Comment by John

Sunshine, Sarge………..tragic occurences like this are also a good argument NOT to have a military draft, IMO. Leave the volunteer system as it is, as long as the military can get the recruits they need to man the battlefields.
The Vietnam War was mainly fought by kids that were drafted into the armed services. The screening processes were much more lenient, if they existed at all, than they are today. Violent acts ,like the one that happened at fort benning, were almost common place (especially when the popularity of that war waned) at all military instalations. I have no proof, but I would think that a recruit that volunteered for this “break ‘em down” treatment will be easier to control than one that is forced into it.

I will say – I Love American Idol – didn’t miss a show this season!

They said David Cook won by 12 million votes! WOW- and I don’t recall them ever giving out the numbers before. Congrats to David Cook. I agree multi-talented people on the show this year.

Best song/performance this year IMO – Jason Castro – Somewhere Over the Rainbow!

we were hooked this season watching the show.

we were pulling for david arch. his voice is so natural. he reminded us of josh groban. i think he will go far.

david cook was also wonderful. he seems to be very sensitive, very caring, even after he won giving acknowledgement to david a.

a music teacher said that david a’s voice is natural, whereas david c’s voice has been trained.

it will be fun to watch all of the contestants and how their lives will intermingle with singing in the future.

Forgot to mention I was wrong about David Archuleta taking it “hands down”

Patty- you should take Paula’s spot next year….congrats to you for picking it from the get go. HA!

I thought this was a GREAT American Idol finale. I had my hopes on little David, so I was somewhat disappointed. But then at the same time, I am happy for big David.

I hope that we will get to see more of little David A. I SIMPLY LOVED HIM!!!!!!!!! And I am a grandmother!!!!!

Comment by Bonita

I knew all along that David Cook’s fans would come through!!! He is THE best singer of the group. However, I was pulling for Carly too as I think (and she proved last night) that she can sing “the phonebook”. Man am I tired of that saying. What the “archie” fans need to realize is that while David can sing well, he is not quite at the top of his game yet. PLUS, his demographic is from about age 10 to 14. David Cook’s is from age 14 or 15 to age 60!!!!!! DAVID COOK ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Sarge, FYI….Artillery has always been known as “The Queen of Battle” not Infantry.

Comment by DB

I heard on Fox Cable News this morning it was about 108 million votes. That seems almost impossible. In FOUR HOURS that is 450,000 votes a minute, 7,500 votes a second. I don’t believe it. How many phone lines does this show have?

I also do not believe the 12MM win by David C. over David A. Its too high when these two were so close all season.

I call it the biggest sympathy vote ever, thanks to Simon’s harsh criticism of all of David C.’s songs and David C. crying because of it . . . pathetic. I knew it right then, David C. would win it.
I wonder if that was all done on purpose, too . . .

I will never watch this show again, ever.

Here is what happened iwth the vote: David Archuletta’s fan base consists largely of teenie-bopper kids (ages about 8 to 14). David Cook’s fan base was largely older rockers. When Idol was over Tuesday night and voting began, voting was allowed to stay open for FOUR (4) hours instead of the usual two. Now, the show was over at 9:00 Eastern. Archuletta’s main fan base (excluding us older fans who really appreciate his voice) could vote for approximately 1 to 2 hours before they HAD TO GO TO BED BECAUSE IT WAS A SCHOOL NIGHT! Upon the majority of the teenie-boppers heading off to bed on a school night, Cook’s fan base had no problem overtaking and beating out Archuletta for 2 more hours! Personally, I don’t see how that was fair!

Comment by John

Tom……..Sarge is right, the infantry is considered the “Queen of Battle”. One theory for the name is that is it comes from the game of chess, where the queen can manuever anywhere on the board (battlefield). The artilery is nicknamed the “King of Battles” , again using chess, because it fights from a basically stationary position.
An old joke amongst artilery personel is, ” You know what kings do to queens , don’t you?

stand up, hook up, shuffle to the door

jump right out and count to four

if my chute don’t open wide

I got a reserve by my side

if that one should fail me too

watch out below cuz I’m comin through

pin my medals upon my chest

The show started at 8:00 p.m. and ended at 10:00 p.m. (eastern time).

I am in the eastern time zone and, normally, shows that start at 8:00 are shown one hour earlier for central time, but I’m not sure how that works when you get to pacific time. Does the show come on three hours earlier? If it does, its coming on when people are just getting off work (5:00 p.m.).

If everyone is watching the show live, it wouldn’t affect the voting, because everyone had four hours to vote from the time the show ended.

However, if the show is delayed and doesn’t come on until later, then what? How does the voting work?

And 10:00 is even later than 9:00 . . . for “little” kids going to bed.

I guess it doesn’t really matter. I still don’t believe those numbers . . .

Heh. There actually are “Idol” contests on post/base, but I do think they are mostly for dependents. Still, glad you liked it. Oh, and about “which way to the front?” …easy answer: guide on Iron Mike.

This is came from an anonynous Japanese soldier during the fight on Iwo Jima, ” the infantry is there so that when they die the general will know where to direct the artillery fire. ”

DB: Sympathy???? Are you kidding? The judges pushed and pushed and pushed for that little Archie Puke. He needs to grow up then maybe he will become a real entertainer. Daivd Cook got the votes because he is the best. There is a big difference between a “singer” and a musician and David Cook is a true musician.

AND…you have NO idea how “close” they were all season. The viewers are not let in on the vote count. For all you know, David Cook could have been the leading vote getter ALL season.

The bloggers above where you told them to “take their blog” somewhere else because they were discussing Military are some of the most faithful of Adam’s bloggers.

In fact they are “Adam’s Personal Rescue Squad” if and when he needs them.

So, welcome to the blog, stay cool, and remember we all digress!!!!!!!

And yes I do digress, all the time, and the very nature of adams blog, is one of politics, military, and gadgets. This idol thing is just a digression instigated by adam.

To Comment by DB: All I know is Idol comes on in Central Time Zone on Tuesday night at 7:00. It is over at 8:00. 2 hours would be 10:00. I know that younger kids start going to bed by 9:00, 10:00 and a few of the lucky ones are allowed to stay up til 11:00. That still left another hour, at least, for voting by older kids and people. I don’t understand why they didn’t just leave the voting to a 2 hour time frame. I feel the outcome would have been different. No matter, both of those young men are talented and both have great careers ahead of them!

Comment by mdlwoods

To Bonita:

Why must you stoop to calling names? David Archuleta is a very talented young man. Definitely not a puke. Just because you may not like his genre of music, doesn’t mean he needs to be called names. After all, you are the one who says he needs to grow up, he is still a child. Do you call all children names?

I see a great career ahead for Archuleta, something along the lines of Josh Groban. Oh, don’t like Josh either? Well, last year, he had the number one selling album of the year…for any genre. Just like with Josh, someday David Archuleta will be able to tell everyone who talked ugly about him to kiss his behind, all the while he is on his way to the bank!

“How did you get on this subject, anyway . . .” — the third post in this thread. Comment by FL Sunshine May 22nd, 2008 at 8:14 am “off subject…”

“…why did you start your conversation here to begin with?” — same answer. You weren’t served by the ad hominem, by the by.

Generally, the “current” or top thread gets all the traffic on our good host’s ‘blog. Yes, this is contrary to most forum thread styles. (I had to get used to it too). Fortunately for Idol Faithful, this thread stopped being the top thread at 2:27 pm Eastern.

hope that makes more sense of that matter for you.

Hmmm ..I don’t have a set bedtime, so I never thought about the extended voting hour and the age factor.
Very very interesting……….
Do you think there should be an age limit on the contestants?
Or the type of songs they sing?
Or should the voting be for ages 0-16 from 8pm -10pm
and ages 16-99 from 10pm -12am?

Sounds complicated now………… :(

DB……..welcome to the blog. I have been known to start a few digressions here………at times. However, I give full credit to FL Sunshine for this one as stated above by LDG…….. (BTW, don’t mess with him……..he used to wear ‘funny hats’). Having lived in FL myself for a number of years I fully understand her motive though. People down there get bored, they put on a Jimmy Buffet 8-track, get a little booze in the blender and…………….the next thing you know………..complete digression. Ahhhhhhhh, those were the days………….

Again, welcome to the blog and enjoy your American Idol discussions.

BTW Adam………….I just watched an interview with T Boone Pickens on a competitors news outlet. Just a friendly suggestion if I may……………the next time you do a segment on our energy crisis it could be well worth it to do an interview with him. He knows what’s going on, IMO.

John-

Good to know. Thanks for the tip! Now turn back the channel!

mdlwoods: It should make no difference. All the younger kids could still have voted before bed. If they’d oinly had 2 hours then the people who voted in the extended time would just have voted earlier if they really wanted to vote.

Comment by Mrs. Carrie

Not one for any reality shows myself… except Fox News Channel! ;)

I just want to say that’s a great pic of Adam & Tamera on the red carpet!

*************************************************************

@ Sunshine: Adam has filled on F&F a few times that I’ve seen, as Susan said, usually during the holiday season.

and Tamera looks quite beautiful…

what an adorable couple.

Yeah this was like the Democratic nomination race.

David Archuleta was Hillary Clinton. Pegged as the frontrunner early on, plenty of experience (he’d won Star Search), qualified, and obviously the one with more talent.

David Cook was the Barack Obama of this whole mess. No real filling, no experience, not even all that amazing. A pretender in a lot of ways. And we know he’ll probably end up doing a crappy job. But he got way more votes just cause he’s not Archuleta.

David “Clinton” Archuleta will end up being the far more successful one with longterm, dedicated followers.

David “Obama” Cook will be a flash in the pan that everyone abandons once a new ‘flavour of month’ comes along.

Sad but true.

Laurie – you hit it right on about Brian!!! I too love that about Brian, it just says what’s on his mind no matter how it comes out. I am often thinking the same thing he is and bust out laughing because he puts it out there.

KC & Sgt Shot – great handling!!! I started to feel back for going “off subject”. I don’t feel so bad now. :-)

Archuleta should have won

Comment by Mrs. Carrie

Gracias, Susan!

The honeymoon was awesome! We spent a weekend on St. Pete Beach, Florida…. then left out of Tampa on the Carnival Legend for seven nights, with stops in Grand Cayman, Cozumel, Belize, and Roatan (an island off Honduras.) I have an online album of some of those pics, as well. I had to choose from 1,055 pictures! In the column on the left-hand part of the sceen, choose to go to snc421’s albums, and again on the left you can choose another album. I have a few albums. As for the wedding pics, they are limited for now. I am slowly getting more pics from people; I hope to get the professional ones soon!

P.S. I’m still in. ;)

btw: Pretty pathetic comparrisons Mike. Wasnt worth the response, but oh well, at 5 am I’m weak.

Comment by DB

uh oh . . . hey I’m really sorry. My questions were literal. I Just wondered.

I am a huge Fox Cable News fan and am familiar with every person on every show and all
of their correspondents.
Its the only news channel I watch. Unfortunately, this is the first time I have visited Adam’s blog.
:(

oh well.
sorry, again.

@DB

no harm no foul

And now to advertise my ignorance (and try to learn something):

“The outcomes of the later stages of this competition are determined by public voting by phone.” (source: Wiki-p)

I am more than a little curious as to *how* that works. Is it completely open to redialing? So could I vote one every n minutes (or seconds, with a computer redialer)? I know with text-message voting for games, they can count unique votes by handset identifier. <–that is done for game shows here where I live.

Your assistance would be appreciated greatly.

Comment by Patty

Yes ldg…open to voting as many times as you please. I dont know if redialers work, but redial works on my phone ;-)

welcome DB…we usually give literal answers. Ha ha.
We all agree to disagree on many things.
If we digress to far, rest assured Adam nudges us back to our senses.

no worries DB! Welcome to Adam’s we try to be host and hostess when he is busy with a story like now with the fire. I am sure he will welcome you soon himself!

Carrie beautiful pix, I love your flowers they are so tropical!

Comment by LDG

@Patty

Thank you. I was to ask a followup question, about people wagering on the outcome, but I am pleased to discover that it appears that one of the few things you *can’t* legal bet in Las Vegas is on the outcome of American Idol.

So it is certainly influence-able, if not rig-able, but to no particular gain. And that is a good thing.

Carrie-
Congrats to you and Steve = cute couple!
Love your theme = sea shells, palm trees… and everything that goes with it! aaahhhh!

Comment by Susan--AZ

Carrie-

I LOVE THE HONEYMOON PICTURES!! You two had a great time– and may I add, you two make a great looking couple!

And project still on!! I am like one of those people at the last minute, I panic and rush! LOL

xxxx

Comment by Susan--AZ

BTW Adam–

If you and Tamera ever host/hostess an Idol show, I will be sure to watch– reason I don’t watch these type of shows is because they continue– you have to watch it almost every week to keep up with the winners/losers– but yes– a lot of talent there!! LOL (I like those shows which are just there for the 30 minutes or hour and end of that) (unless my dear bud Adam is on– then I would watch for days)… (I have seen five Sister Sister episodes– the girls crack me up– they are so dang cute!)

Comment by Patty

Susan…Ryan Seacrest would probably have to fall off the face of the earth before Adam and Tamera could host! *L*
I have to wonder if they’ve made him so “big” that Idol wont be able to afford him! Curious to see if he is there next year.
Hubby says it just wouldnt be the same without him. Thats his opinoin. ;-)

Comment by Becky

Hey Adam, I was going through the AI finale again tonight b/c I missed some parts of it. One part I missed was right after the Jonas Brothers were finished the cameras were scanning the crowd and they showed you and Tamera!

Comment by Adam Housley

Becky-

I know! How cool. Later that evening the crew outside said they saw us and then I got a few e-mails and text messages. Thanks for noticing!

Adam

Comment by Kathy in Tx

Well the Jonas brothers explains so much, I was watching something else during after them, they are not my style like ZZ Top is! I will see if I can find a clip of it somewhere!
