First Pitch Surprise!

Many of you new to this blog may not know that I am a huge baseball fan and have covered many a story that crosses over to the news side of things. So when I find a baseball story that becomes news I do my best to cover it and this one takes the cake for our national pastime. Last year we covered military opening day with the San Diego Padres and no other professional team goes as far as they do to support our men and women in uniform. While covering the Padres on this occasion and a few others, we became friends with their PR staff’s which include George Stieren and Warren Miller. They just had their colleague Erik Meyer send me the story and video of 11-year-old Brad Warnick, joined on the mound by mother Irene and 8-year-old sister Ashley, who thought they were just representing the USS Midway Museum in San Diego in honor of their fathers service in the Navy. BUT…..dressed in full Padres catching gear behind the plate was Petty Officer 1st Class Rick Warnick, their father & husband. Petty Officer Warnick is part of the crew currently deployed on the USS Nimitz, scheduled to return next month. Warnick was flown home early to surprise his family on the field through cooperative efforts of the USS Midway Museum and the Navy. This video is what it’s all about.

UPDATE: Rick Warnick has left a great note on this blog, so scroll down to find it. Also, his wife had found out the night before and kept the kids out of the loop. Watch closely, you’ll see the emotion in the Brad and Ashley’s eyes.

ready for my all time favorite joke?

a wife was looking to get her husband something special for his birthday, she thought new golf clubs would be nice, but after digging them out of the garage and looking at them, she realized they were barely used…that would never work.

so then she thought maybe some new tools, she looked at those and she realized they were all new, he didn’t need those.

Then she remembered he loved Bridgette Bardot, so she thought and thought and thought and finally came up with the perfect gift, she would buy some very sexy lingerie, get a tattoo of BB (for bridgette bardot) on her arse and surprise him when he got home.

she runs down down to the Tattoo parlor, and the lingerie store and races back home to surprise her hubby.

but she is too late, the hubby is sitting there in shock, she asks what wrong and he says “why are my clubs and tools out?”

in all the years of the marriage she had never touched his golf clubs or tools and here they were, all out.

he was jumping to conclusions

she immediately stripped off her clothes to show him the new lingerie and cheer him up, but he was already thinking the worse, they had always been conservative and she had never worn anything like that for him…he was fuming now.

she was getting desperate to calm him down, so she knew the Tattoo would cheer him up, she dropped her knickers and bent over to show him the Tattoo.

her husband dizzy with disbelief, staggered back and all he could say is…

“that tears it….who the he!! is BOB??????”

Adam,

Aren’t you going to use any of Susan’s “excuses” for being late?

Comment by John

But the number one excuse for being late for work is…….” My girlfriend said her headache was gone “

Comment by Adam Housley

Wow-

After just two days away I fell waaaaaaay behind. I have some work to do this afternoon and evening. I had the wedding and a friends birthday, then travel back to LA and then a flight to Tucson for stories and live reports this week. I explain more in a new thread up shortly. Thanks everyone for keeping it going and thanks for roughly 300,000 visits to my blogs just last week.

Susan……….lol.

#10 though may be a sad but true scenario. I heard an interview with a pawn shop owner on the radio this morning. He said that he’s seen a definite increase in people coming in to pawn their stuff in the last few months. What’s scary is, he said, is that people are coming in pawning rings, bracelets, watches, etc because they need money for gas.

Another good one is: While driving to work I ran into a guy I’d never met before……..boy, was he pissed.

Kathy Texas–

it was sweet tea– You did pay attention!

John– for you!

If you’re sitting in a traffic jam watching the minutes tick away and you’ve decided honesty isn’t the best policy for you, think of a believable and acceptable reason you’re walking in late. After all, if you were a hiring manager who heard any of these 10 real-life excuses for being late, you’d be suspicious, too.

1. While rowing across the river to work, I got lost in the fog.

2. Someone stole all my daffodils.

3. I had to go audition for American Idol.

4. My ex- stole my car so I couldn’t drive to work.

5. My route to work was shut down by a presidential motorcade.

6. I have transient amnesia and couldn’t remember my job.

7. I was indicted for securities fraud this morning.

8. The line was too long at Starbucks.

9. I was trying to get my gun back from the police.

10. I didn’t have money for gas because all of the pawnshops were closed.

This guy’s wife asks her husband, ” Honey, if I died would you remarry? ”

He replies, ” Well, after a considerable period of grieving, we all need companionship, so I guess I would. ”

She asks, ” If I died and you remarried, would she live in this house? ”

” We spent a lot of money getting this house just right “, he says, ” So I wouldn’t want to move out. ”

” If I died and you remarried and you lived in this house, would she sleep in our bed. “, the wife asks.

The husband replies, ” We just bought that bed for $2500.00. so I wouldn’t be interrested in spending money for a new one. ”

The wife asks, ” If I died and you remarried and she lived in this house and slept in our bed, would she use my golf clubs? ”

” Oh no, that would be impossible ” the husband replies, ” she’s left handed “

Tamera Snuck a look at your site. Okay I took a long look. I love the picture of you and your sis on her wedding day, very sweet. I also love the picture on your about you page of you and Adam, very nice of both of you.

Patty I vote grilled shrimp!

We are having sandwiches and choc chip cookies! Daddy is working shift work. Our good dinner was at 2.

Comment by Patty

Humm, i haven’t decided if you all made me hungry, or whether i want to pass on supper now!
I’m with the burgers, steak, grilled shrimp, and instead of beer, make mine a mountain dew! I’m not one to try “new things”, sorta like to stick to the ones i know. uugh, nothing raw, thats for sure!!!

We don’t have so much gas theft here, our biggest problem is copper theft! They are stealing copper wire from work sites, etc, because the “cash it in” pay is so high. That and ammonia theft for the small time “crack” betty crockers. Although i would guess that is a “rural” problem, not much call for ammonia tanks in the city.

wow, adam must have really relaxed! Getting a new slide show ready for us adam? ;-)

Comment by John

LDG………There have been a few instances here on the east coast where tanker trucks were stolen from construction sites. They were recovered within a day with their fuel ( diesel fuel in most cases ) syphoned out. Authorities do not think it’s an organized criminal element, just soem desperate truckers or other heavy machinery operators.
What’s becoming somewhat of a concern to authorities is the apparent hoarding of gasoline by individuals. These people are thinking that the gas situation is going to get much worse, so they are storing the gasoline inside their homes/garages, usually in containers that are not designed to hold fuel. Could be a, litteraly, explosive situation.

[...] I like baseball. Yes, despite the miserable, selfish, egotistical players and the player’s union. I like the game of baseball. And every now and then, you get some real good news from the sport, where you see support for “Mom, Apple Pie, and Baseball.” Like here. [...]

Comment by LDG

@John

Another Chavez thread would be good, lots going with that (including the story you mentioned).

as to gasoline smuggling…

while it happens in a lot of the world, I bet you have already thought of the issue with the sheer tonnage involved to get any appreciable value in the North American market from international smuggling, though. The U.S. in particular is not a good target market as most of the import of petroleum to the ‘States is crude oil and there are controls on what refined products enter the market stream. I could sure see it being a good business (crime) in other places though.

If I recall correctly though, there was a period where hijacking tanker trucks inside the U.S. and sneaking off into another state to sell to an unscrupulous distributor happened. 1970’s?

Schalit family receives letter from captive son, gilad

ATLANTA — Representatives of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter delivered today a handwritten letter from Cpl. Gilad Schalit, held in Hamas captivity for two years, to his parents, Noam and Aviva.

At their Damascus meeting in April Hamas leader Khaled Mashal committed to President Carter to transfer the letter, and it was received at the Carter Centers office in Ramallah on Sunday.

President Carter and his staff will attempt to arrange for a return letter from Schalits parents to their son and hope that an arrangement enabling Gilad Schalits release will be reached soon.

uni– I had looked it up on the internet– and I didn’t type in the right clues– so I asked you– but I just typed it in again and found about the same description as yours-

sea urchin roe is more frequently called “Uni”, and it is actually not roe at all; rather it is the organs that produce the roe. In other words, the gonads.

I will reiterate– a an absolutley adorable couple– the prettiest smiles– Jen is very pretty– very natural– and her husband is way cool! Boy is he in shape! prettiest blue eyes– so peaceful!

anyhow– enough of that– I will start crying– waaaaaaaaaa!

What story do you have about my friend Rob? Is he wanted in your state? LOL

Comment by LDG

@Max

right then, taking a guess or three at “exciting” = uncommon + interesting taste, with a focus of flavorful items:

Living as I do in the Northeast, I have to mention basashi which is simply thinly sliced raw horsemeat. Serves well in small portions with a side of daikon oroshi (grated Japanese radish) that is flavored with a touch of soy sauce.

The other superb choice for flavorful meat is deer venison, but that is not exactly uncommon to you. Serving it as shikasashi, which is raw (like the horsemeat in the example above), or as a lightly blanched addition to o-nabe (a stewpot of vegetables) as a cold weather dish is how I have seen it here.

One addition, from the seafood side, is uni, which is sea urchin “roe” (actually all the insides). That is available as “adventurous food” at many sushi restaurants, served in small rolls of seaweed. It has a texture unlike most anything else.
