Stolen by the Nazis and the Red Army!

This is one of those ‘Indiana Jones’ type of stores, only this one is entirely true.

This information comes to me from Eric Miller, who represents the firm involved. It is a landmark ruling from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit holding that Agudas Chasidei Chabad of United States (Chabad) may pursue its claims in a U.S. federal court against the Russian Federation, the Russian Ministry of Culture and Mass Communication, the Russian State Library, and the Russian State Military Archive to recover a collection of sacred religious books and archives.

The D.C. Circuit held that a U.S. federal court has jurisdiction over Chabad’s claims to recover an archive of sacred books and manuscripts which were stolen by the Nazis during World War II and then taken by the Soviet Red Army to Moscow in 1945 in violation of international law. In addition, the D.C. Circuit cleared the way for Chabad to pursue its claims against the Russian Federation to recover a library of sacred, irreplaceable religious books which were seized by the Soviets during the Bolshevik Revolution and then retaken by the newly formed Russian Federation in 1992 after the collapse of the Soviet Union. So what will the Russians do now, will they appeal all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court?

Chabad is represented by Bingham attorneys Seth Gerber, Marshall Grossman and David Salmons, and attorneys Nathan Lewin and Alyza D. Lewin of Lewin & Lewin, LLP, and Wm. Bradford Reynolds of Howrey, LLP.

What does everyone here think about that teen pregnancy pact? I just read it was a hoax, but some say otherwise. I think its the fault of the parents, not the media like some liberals want to blame it on.

Also, what are your thoughts on Don Imus? I think he should be given a pass this time. He wasnt offending African Americans, just explaining the reason why that football player was being arrested for. I dont see the problem with that.

Susan-

I heard about Naomi Campell. I think she has a major anger problem, and everytime something happens like she gets off easy like how most celebs do. I dont think give her community service or even anger management helps. In my opinion, she needs to do house arrest or a week in jail.

Avi,
My husband went to Ohio State for 8 years and loved it. He did pre-med and med.
Our daughter did 1 1/2 years at OSU but didn’t like it there (too big for her) so transferred to a smaller college. Our son-inlaw went to Cornell and loved it. I went to a local college and was a commuter student so never lived on campus.

What do you want to major in?

@Alfredo-
(more paranoia from Señor Chavez)

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said on Friday that the US is trying to bring him before an international court.

Chavez says the US is using accusations that the Venezuelan government is supporting the Lebanese group Hezbollah to “see if the world will make a move” against him.

The US, which has worsening ties with Chavez, said on Wednesday it was freezing the assets of two Venezuelans, including a diplomat, it linked to Hezbollah and accused Venezuela’s government of protecting the two men.

“The United States [is] accusing our government, Venezuela, me of helping Lebanese movements — in the Middle East. They are trying to take me to international court to see if the world will go along with the game against us,” Chavez said at a political rally in his first comments on the charge.

“I think it will simply turn out badly for them if they play that kind of game,” he said.

Chavez has increasingly sparred with Washington this year over accusations of his ties to groups the US calls terrorists.

US Congressmen have debated blacklisting Venezuela as a state sponsor of terrorism, even though the OPEC nation is one of the US’ biggest oil suppliers.

US officials have hardened their stance against Chavez since Colombia said in March it found FARC rebel computers showing he supported the group.

Colombia has threatened to take Chavez to international court, accusing him of backing the FARC, which is fighting to topple the South American nation’s government.

The Venezuelan leader denies he supports a group that both his neighbor and the US consider terrorists.

The US has at times identified the Lebanese Muslim community on Venezuela’s Caribbean island of Margarita as a threat, saying funds were raised there for the Shi’ite Muslim Hezbollah group.

The US considers Hezbollah a terrorist group.

Chavez, who wants to build an anti-US alliance, frequently accuses Washington of seeking to damage his image and says the superpower’s strategy is to force him from power. The US dismisses the charge.

Comment by Susan--AZ

Chavez can’t read– LOL

BRUSSELS, Belgium (Reuters): Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez seems to have misunderstood a new European Union migration law, EU leaders said on Friday after the head of the energy-rich nation threatened to stop selling them oil.

The 27-nation bloc agreed this week that illegal immigrants can be detained for up to 18 months and face a re-entry ban of up to five years.

On Thursday, Chavez said the rules were “shameful” and said he might cancel investments in the South American country made by European countries that enact them as well as stop their oil shipments.

Spain’s prime minister said Madrid was prepared to explain the new law “so that the EU’s relationship with all Latin American countries remains positive.”

“Maybe we need to explain exactly to the president of Venezuela what this directive (EU law) consists of,” Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said at a two-day EU summit.

“There have been many interpretations of this directive… that have nothing to do with what it really is,” he said.

Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Jansa, whose country holds the EU presidency, said Chavez’s threat of withholding oil exports was “perhaps exaggerated and perhaps not really understanding” of what the new laws meant.

EU officials argue the bloc needs to get tougher on illegal immigration to convince voters to be more accepting of legal immigrants. Millions of Latin Americans live in Europe, many from poor Andean countries and war-weary Colombia.

First colonised by European nations, Latin America also received waves of European immigrants after independence.

Chavez, a left-wing leader with a track record of confrontation with rich countries, has nationalised several foreign-owned companies in Venezuela, turning them into joint ventures controlled by the state.

France’s Total and Norway’s Statoil are among the European oil companies operating in Venezuela.

Chavez has regularly issued conditional threats to halt crude shipments from Venezuela — one of the world’s largest exporters of oil — although he has never followed through on a move that would hurt supplies at a time of record prices.

Other senior officials in Latin America and rights groups such as Amnesty International have expressed concern about the EU migration rules.

Venezuela exports 2 million barrels of oil per day about 400,000 going to Europe, compared with around 1.4 million that goes to the United States, according to data from the Energy Information Administration.

Sheriff’s jailbirds to take care of dogs, cats
Old jail to house unwanted pets

Jack Gillum
The Arizona Republic
Jun. 9, 2005 12:00 AM

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is giving some animals in the Valley a stay of execution.

Starting this week, a section of the old First Avenue Jail will house unwanted dogs and cats, many of which would otherwise be put to sleep at overcrowded local animal shelters. The goal is to find them all homes.

“The animals are victims that did nothing wrong,” said Arpaio, a self-described animal lover.

On Wednesday, the first day of the program, the jail located at 120 S. First Ave. received 10 dogs from various shelters, and jail officials say there is space for between 250 and 300 dogs and cats.

Arpaio couldn’t say how much the program will cost but said money would be taken from a jail education budget, since inmates staff the program. He said he plans to continue it at least through summer.

The First Avenue Jail housed inmates until it closed in 1999. The inmates were transferred to other jail facilities including Tent City, where convicted criminals and defendants awaiting trail are housed in outdoor tents.

The former jail is now used exclusively for Arpaio’s animal program.

Dogs like “Frankie,” a Dalmatian Labrador, live in refurbished jail cells that once housed dangerous criminals, complete with new paint and old mattresses once used by prisoners.

About 25 of Arpaio’s inmates have volunteered to work with the 10 dogs and one cat, cleaning their cells and giving them $2 worth of meals per day donated by Wal-Mart.

One inmate, Linda Desmond, says that the program can help inmates “start a new life” in the animal-care industry after they’re released.

“This is a lifesaver,” says Nancy Swanner, founder of White German Shepherd Rescue, a local animal rescue agency. “It’s puppy-dumping season, and everyone is getting rid of their pets. We get calls every single day, and we’re simply full.”

But Mary Rose Wilcox, the Maricopa County supervisor for District 5, criticizes the sheriff for turning a jail into an animal-control program.

“We can’t create another animal control,” said Wilcox, adding that people should be the “top priority.”

Nicholas Hentoff, a civil rights attorney who has previously sued the county over jail conditions, goes further, saying that the sheriff labels all inmates as prisoners, regardless if they’re not convicted and still await trial.

“He brings cruelty to new levels,” Hentoff said.

Arpaio hopes that the animals, soothed by radios playing Beethoven, are placed in homes soon.

More on this topic

Excerpts from agreement
Does the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office need city officials’ permission to conduct immigration enforcement in those communities?

The agreement the sheriff’s office signed with Immigration and Customs Enforcement suggests the sheriff should, or must. The agreement states that deputies trained to enforce immigration laws and who are part of Community Action Teams are “charged with the responsibility of assisting local authorities in urban areas who have requested assistance due to pervasive criminal activity occurring in hot spots within their communities.”

Sheriff Joe Arpaio argues the agreement lets immigration-trained deputies arrest any illegal immigrants they encounter while enforcing state laws.

One clause says that immigration-trained deputies have “the power and authority to interrogate any alien or person believed to be an alien as to his right to remain in the United States.” Another says they have “the power to arrest without warrant any alien” in the United States if the officer “has reason to believe the alien to be arrested is in violation of law and is likely to escape before a warrant can be obtained.”
