Wildhorse Fire near Napa
THE LATEST UPDATE….BEHIND THE SCENES VIDEO
done
Sunday afternoon/Evening update
The smoke has filled the Suisun Valley, so thick that we are now wearing face masks and periodically flying embers get into my eyes. We are now going to move about 4 miles or so to our west, over to Green valley Road where the fire is now headed. The road is not long and passes old vineyards, some nice ranches and a couple of neighborhoods tucked into the rolling hills.
This area is a mini version of the wine country and much less travelled by tourists. We make our way up the hillside on several different fire roads, some haven’t been passed in a very long time. At one point we get to the flames, it is a spot fire that blew 3/4 mile away from the front line. After our video we head back down the hill and pass the dozers and some engines that are starting to circle around homes.
We see U-haul trailers arriving and horses that are now wandering with gates open, in case the fire arrives here. The wind is no longer still, but the temperatures are cooler than yesterday, but still warm. This picture is of the fire and of photographer Ken Cavalli.
I saw the little plume of smoke over the eastern hills just before 4pm on Saturday afternoon. If you know Napa, or the wine country, the brown column grew right over Mount George.
My first reaction was like any fire, uh oh, but this one even more so since I know the area so well. In fact the last couple of years I make a habit of driving over Monticello Road into the Green Valley and Suisun Valley areas. The rolling hills filed with oaks and wild land that gets me daydreaming about what Northern California looked like generations ago…now a fire was burning in this same area. to make matters worse, the temperatures were again in the triple digits and a warm wind began to blow. I called the fire in and was told they had just gotten the call.
For the next few hours, as the sun set across the vineyards, we watched as the fire and the cloud of smoke expanded across the sky. Air tankers and helicopters can be seen and a fire engines from across the valley raced down the road headed to the hills above Napa and Solano Counties.
This area hasn’t burned in a very long time and this season is turning into a horror story for many firefighters and people who live in the country. Fire conditions are more like we’d see in late October, the rains just a few weeks away, not in mid June, with an entire summer ahead of us. Here are some pictures I snapped at the Mankas Corner fire headquarters.

Good afternoon!
There you are you little fire chaser! Left you a few hellos on the previous thread, you’re up and about early this morning.
✈ ✈ ✈ ✈ ✈
@Adam–
Yes, I have been keeping up with all those fires– Now you and Darvette were in Paradise correct? Is Paradise in Napa? And that was on fire last week?
This has become a total horror story– as a matter of fact it has become a horror story to me as well because every time there is wind here– the first thing that crosses my mind is– Please, no fire in CA-
Those poor firefighters must be exhausted!!!! They are not even getting breaks–these fires come one after another!!!!! THIS IS AWFUL!!!
Take care and stay safe, porfavor–
And this WordPress is being nasty to all of us!!! So if you don’t see any comments, it is because we are not allowed instant posting at the moment!
Hi Tamera!!!!
I’m sure you knew immediately what was happening when you saw that smoke, as many fires as you have covered.
After my visit to Arizona and the Canyon area, I now have a better understanding of DRY.
Be safe,
–from the Green Hills of KY.
Thank you for sharing with us Adam.
The fires are horrible out west or anywhere for that matter.
We had a murder in my area Thursday and it sure has put everyone in a different mindset.I made me leave home for a few days.
Hope all are well and that Avi “aced” his exams.
Till later, Montana
@Adam–
I bet you are sick of that red bag!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Underneath Adam’s pictures it reads: Comment Moderation–
so are we back to the old school of waiting to see if the comments are approved and then the posting?
Darvette–
and to think you were just mentioning on your blog about Napa Valley–
Adam– are your parents in a safe location?
Still having trouble posting…my last comment on the previous thread did not go through.
Susan: “these fires come one after another!!!!! ”
They always do, for several reasons though. First factor is of course the weather, hot and dry makes fires burn a lot longer or larger. Second is summer vacation; you have the more camper than normaly and they sometimes cause fires by accident, and also bored badly behaved youths who start them on purpose.
Been watching you all afternooon on TV….. Thanks Adam for the coverage.
Dottie
Max, your comment was so insightful and right on the money.
Hope everyone had a good weekend.
Montana
Adam–
I saw your coverage on Fox Report– While you were standing there (the two new pictures) your skin matched the color of the fires– I can’t imagine what the temperature feels like!
Max– yes– and third factor– the winds! Just awful!!!
xxx
After thought– Sylvia– Toledo– Praying at the pumps? I hope it works! LOL
—————————————————————————————————-
Arizona and Sonora have signed an agreement to exchange info on illegal weapons coming across–
This is good news!
@Adam–
I will wait until you are back safely to complain about this comment moderation going on–
(unless New York you want to tell us if this is now a permanent thing and if so– how come some other person gets instant posting and Adam does not anymore?)
Looks like we are being watched by big brother!
Adam thanks for posting this! When you think how close Ken is to the fire, really his job is not an easy one at all. I have a hard time wearing glasses and taking a picture, look at his concentration!
As Susan observed above, you have got to be getting tired of breaking out the ‘red bag’. When I turned the TV on this morning and turned to FOX News, there you were. I must say, not exactly the the person I was hoping to see first thing in the morning ( Ainsley would be my first choice ) but the first thing I thought was either Chavez started WW3, illlegal immigrants were bribing US border guards with free gasoline to gain entry, California was burning or OJ attended another sports memorabilia auction……………obvisiously I wasn’t quite awake yet.
Unfortunatley you may be there most of the week covering these fires as no real rainfall is expected. So be safe and look forward to “happier” reports from you.
I know you probably have your own forecast models, but here’s a link that show the forecast weather systems for quick reference……..just click on “animate” to start………….

Adam……..If my original post doesn’t make it through ( it was full of my usual spiffy comments so it may have overwhelmed Fox’s new and improved high tech blog site, LOL ) here’s a link that may be of some use. Unfortunately it shows no rain in the forecast for the fire areas.
As always, be safe……..

click on “animate” in the link
Wow, either no posts are going through, or FARC has been hired to moderate Fox’s blog web site.
@Adam Housley
Sad to have to cover a fire so close to home, but job well done.
@All
Given the moderation flag is up, I shall visit here only occasionally until things return to normal posting. Be well and safe.
((departs))
Susan: Well wind would be part of the weather factor. You also get that ‘dry lightening’ which causes a lot of fires.
Great video.
The snap, crackle, pop sounds belongs in a bowl of cereal; not in your backyard.
It is so dry in that area, right now Central Texas is that dry. No wonder there are so many small fires!
Max–
It was stated that lightening started the fire–
Last night on our local news, the Cave Creek Fire of 2005 was talked about– the biggest fire here since in AZ– The fire department mentioned how it was told to the residents to clear all dead bushes and shrubs withing 75 feet of anything going uphill as fire travels uphill, and many of these residents have not paid heed– I can’t believe this– I would be clearing everything for preventive– And we have a couple little ones going on at the moment–
DUH!
Ay karamba
Sylvia–
In reference to your post on the preceding thread, I answered it– but no telling if it will go through as I see a few of my comments (complaints) were not approved!
Adam–
How are you holding out?
We miss you– but not this Comment Moderator! LOL
Avi– “caramba!” xxxx
Susan,
Several of my comments didn’t go through so I haven’t tried too often today. Seems like it’s hit or miss…and I don’t like wasting my time typing only to have “misses”
Avi,
I left you a message on the previous thread but don’t know if you saw it.
Are you all done with school for the summer?
Adam,
Thanks for the information about home. We just saw that there were fires in Napa on National news this am. I figured your site would have more information on it. Is it mostly in Green Valley/Suisun area or on the Napa side of Mt George? My Mom just sold there property on Rockville Road and moved up here to Washington with us.. Good thing
hope everyone is ok there.. thanks for the info.
I live and work in Napa. This morning I found a 2″ x 2″ little square piece of burned wood in front of my garage. Never thought about the fact that a spark from the nearby fire could possibly float to rooftops where I’m at as it is a few miles away from the fire. Glad it wasn’t a burning ember. I feel sorry for the person who lost their house and barn. Hopefully that will be the only one and they will get it completely contained soon.
We are safe-fire headed toward the solano area but thick smoke all around us-can’t see the hills or any distance. Adam-great pictures again.
We all saw the first smoke and after dark we could all see the fire in the hills. Too close for comfort
but thankfully -so far-away from our homes. Hope they get a handle on it soon! It is sooooo dry
here now-soooo early too!
Hope all is well-I am catching up so hope to join in the blog more often. Any news I missed?
Did see there was another Mom on the blog, can’t remember where she was from-
so I guess I should be Mom-Napa???? Adam’s Mom sounds ????

Adam
To you and your crew - stay safe
I think all of us are trying to talk to you - but no comments are being posted - so please don’t be offended by the low number of posts on this thread.
Stay Safe
Thank you ADAM for the updates. Our children are residents of Green Valley, California and we watch Fox News for the updates on the fires. We live in Wisconsin so it is SO IMPORTANT TO US TO HAVE THOSE UPDATES. We don’t need to keep calling them for the updates. Keep the updates coming. Thank you.
Wow, did everyone quit watching Foxnews? Only 63 comments from the last 10 blogs in the Onthe scene section and that includes 25 from Adam and 25 from the Bagdad Bureau. Either people quit watching or you are reporting on news events that most people don’t care about.
Hey Adam, what’s up Fox?
BTW, since this moderator is taking his/her time approving posts on current events and some of you rely on the information posted here for what’s happening in the world, I want everyone to know that CNN has confirmed that the Titanic did sink………….just keeping you up to date.
Hey Adam!
Wished you a good morning earlier, I’m on EST but didn’t come through. Watched you during the day on FOX regarding fires & how different your dry/wet seasons are compared to ours here in Florida. During the summer, we hopefully have afternoon rains and it helps with the brush fires. Best wishes! ✈ ✈ ✈ ✈ ✈
Here is an article about Cindy McCain– Many things about her I did not know– especially how she taught kids with special needs– I think I am beginning to like her and not just think of her as daddy’s rich little girl! I am impressed!
http://www.newsweek.com/id/142650
Adam-
We’re starting to Worry about you! Hope all is well…..
I have a daughter, wholives in the Green Valley area and I can’t reach her today. Please let everyone stay safe.I will be praying for you’ll
Last post did not go through either— about McCain’s wife–
how about this one? Obama– Well he does turn the other cheek– conveniently so! So I think he is somewhat wishy washy!
When Mr. Obama began his presidential campaign, Muslim Americans from California to Virginia responded with enthusiasm, seeing him as a long-awaited champion of civil liberties, religious tolerance and diplomacy in foreign affairs. But more than a year later, many say, he has not returned their embrace.
While the senator has visited churches and synagogues, he has yet to appear at a single mosque. Muslim and Arab-American organizations have tried repeatedly to arrange meetings with Mr. Obama, but officials with those groups say their invitations — unlike those of their Jewish and Christian counterparts — have been ignored. Last week, two Muslim women wearing head scarves were barred by campaign volunteers from appearing behind Mr. Obama at a rally in Detroit.
In interviews, Muslim political and civic leaders said they understood that their support for Mr. Obama could be a problem for him at a time when some Americans are deeply suspicious of Muslims. Yet those leaders nonetheless expressed disappointment and even anger at the distance that Mr. Obama has kept from them.
“This is the ‘hope campaign,’ this is the ‘change campaign,’ ” said Mr. Ellison, Democrat of Minnesota. Muslims are frustrated, he added, that “they have not been fully engaged in it.”
OK Comment Moderation!
You took the fun out of blogging! And I think this is totally uncool! And to say the least unfair!
We were a nice group here and now you have put up this wall! I think the terms of use and the Privacy Statment were not violated, and if so, apply to all other blog sites!

John–
I ordered one of these Speedos for you for your lifeguard job!
_______________________________________________________________________________
Yet even if the Speedo swimsuit isn’t superior to Tyr’s, and even if other competitors can quickly produce similar versions, Speedo clearly has engineered a psychological edge for the LZR Racer. “I knew from the moment I hit the water, I’d make it,” Mr. Kitajima, the Japanese world record-breaker, told reporters after the Tokyo event Sunday.
For years, the trend was to make swimsuits that covered as little skin as possible — high-cut legs and wide-open backs for women, tiny boomerang-shaped numbers for men. But allowing bodysuits before the Sydney Summer Olympics in 2000 reversed that trend, increasing the potential for new technology.
For its work on the LZR Racer, Speedo conducted tests on a host of materials with NASA wind tunnels used to determine surface friction on spacecrafts re-entering the earth’s atmosphere. The swimsuit features a “compression zone” around the torso and other parts of the body, allowing swimmers to conserve energy by reducing muscle and skin vibration.
The controversial aspect of the swimsuit, however, was the application of thin polyurethane panels on the swimsuit to minimize drag.
Israeli Military Man kills himself today a few hundred feet from Sarkosi today at the airport????????? he was Druzi …… somthing fishi about this theres conflicting stories going on….

U.S. Has No Knowledge of an Attack on Iran (Update1)
By Camilla Hall
June 24 (Bloomberg) — The U.S. has no knowledge of an attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities, Lieutenant Stephanie Murdock, a Fifth Fleet spokeswoman, said.
“To our knowledge there has been no bombing activity in Iran or on its nuclear sites,” Murdock said in a telephone interview from the Persian Gulf.
“It’s not something we have any knowledge of at this time,” she added.
A spokesman for the Israel Defense Forces, speaking on condition of anonymity, said by telephone that the army wasn’t aware of any incident involving Iran.
There was speculation in financial markets earlier today that Iran’s nuclear facilities had been attacked.

Hi all. Still here in MI with my sister-in-law who is recuperating from hip surgery!
Adam’s Mom, glad to hear the fires were not approaching your place.
Adam, nice reports from the fires. Looking forward to your next report. Get some rest!
Adam - Just dropped by for a brief visit and am reading about the awful fires! Glad to hear you are leaving the area to cover something else. How was your asthma? I sure hope the west coast starts getting a little rain to help with those fires.
Florida has finally jumped in (head first) to our summer afternoon thunderstorm patterns. Wow, great lightening shows in the evenings too.
Was back out at the beach yesterday and the marshes have already started to replenish themselves. Did not smell any dead fish as we passed through on our way to the beach!
@Jen-
In 1985, the Ohio General Assembly approved “Hang on Sloopy” as Ohio’s official rock song.
Posts are still not coming through! grrrr~

I posted here a while ago… maybe 5 or 6 hours ago
That’s all I’m gonna say about this…..
Hi all!!!
Carrie

Janice Dean has some cool pictures on her site– and she has instant posting now!!!
waaaaa– please get this fixed– I feel lost! sob and sob and sob!!!!
Woah! I just came home… it went from 59 comments to 72 comments while I was gone! Both my previous comments are there…
Carrie

Susan-
great article about Cindy McCain. I hope she will be our next First Lady. Those other liberal networks are going to town dissing her about how she is taking orginal recipes from cookbooks. Its really disgusting.
Susan,
I’m still trying to post and am not having much luck. Maybe we may have to go back to the old way of communicating…. by phone and conference calls!!!
Brad–
I was not aware of everything Cindy has done– changed my perspective of her– I also heard how she (her people) copied the recipes– Who cares- Rachel Ray was flattered!
Mrs. Carrie– Hubby been keeping you busy?
Sylvia– and morse code-
dit dit dit
dah dah dah
dit dit dit
K2- so there you are! I was wondering where you had been~
Carrie—
that was a long wedding– weddingday 144– LOL
LOVED THE PICTURES
I used to live in CA, and its heartbreaking to see how many wildfires are erupting this year. I guess its Santa Ana Winds, and the total dryness of the mountains. Plus that heat wave over the weekend didnt help either.
Susan-
Yep. That was one of the incidents, with Rachael Ray. But the liberal mainstream media also started picking on yet another recipe Cindy supposedly copied, this time it was from a Betty Crocker cookbook.
Its really irritating how those liberals can get away with stretching the truth with thier biased reporting.
Brad–
don’t people just have to pick out the most mundane and most ridiculous things to write– I could care less if she had Betty Crocker in her kitchen cooking! Maybe she should have added one tsp. of something not in the recipe and that would have made it an original! LOL
Now they are harping on the Budweiser thing– How a First Lady can be First Lady with her dad having all his millions because of Budweiser– Well, I will drink a Bud anyday and thank them!
Susan-
I dont really drink alcohol, but i dont think the liberal media should be contantly picking on every little thing either.
Its just like John McCain’s comments about being in Iraq for a 100 years, and the liberal media went all crazy over it, calling him McBush, a 3rd tem President, and some others i wont bother to mention here.
If they would listen to the entire interview, McCain meant for non fighting duties. And we have been in other countries for much longer.
