Ferris Bueller for the 21st century

APLast week I interviewed the one and only “Ferris Bueller,” Matthew Broderick. Today I’m talking about a film some critics called “Ferris Bueller for the 21st century.”

The film is called “Charlie Bartlett,” and it stars one of my good friends, actor and singer/songwriter Tyler Hilton. It’s out on DVD today and stars Hilton as a bully with a Mohawk. (Robert Downey Jr., Hope Davis and Anton Yelchin round out the cast).

When I cover a premiere as a reporter, I usually work the red carpet, but don’t get to go into the theater with the actors. But as a friend of one of the “Charlie Bartlett” stars, I was much more behind-the-scenes than usual for this premiere!

The film was part of last year’s Tribeca Film Festival – and I got to attend the screening alongside the stars. Just as the film started, I panicked for a moment, worried that no one would laugh at Tyler’s funny lines. Luckily, he was a huge hit with the crowd – they laughed at all the right times. Whew!

At the after-party, I chatted with a very nice, down-to-earth man named Jay. Turned out it was Jay Roach, who produced “Charlie Bartlett,” as well as a little project you may have heard of… the “Borat” movie! He also directed the Austin Powers films. The guy is a Hollywood powerhouse and was also the most down-to-earth person in the room. And you thought there was no humility in Hollywood!

You are so right on Jill Dobson. I was hanging out with my celeb friends the other day I was like, hey Clive Owen you are just like me! Natalie Portman was there and she’ll tell you about it later. Long story short Naomi Campbell hit me on the head with a cell phone. It was hilarious.

I remember Ferris Bueller. What great memories. It was part of the all the great teen movie genres made in the 80s, by none other than the great John Hughes.

This must of been such an exciting night, I’m super jealous! I’m glad the movie - and Tyler’s role especially - was well received. Can you ask Jim what it’s going to take to get him back on OTH, I miss seeing him every week! : )
