Goleta Fire…..Here we go Again!

LATE THURSDAY UPDATE:   The winds are still staying away and we are noticing more air attacks even though the marine layer and smoke make it virtually impossible to see the mountains in the Los Padre National Forrest above Goleta. As we watch the fire fight from this fire base, a couple of men from a company called Flir stopped at our truck. The company is located in Goleta on the ocean side of the 101 freeway. From outside their office, infared camera’s can spot the fire several miles away. The pictures are stunning and this type of technology is beginning to help firefighters all across the globe. Here is the video and my interview of the men at their office, which happens to be just down the street.

No one can remember a time when fires burned this close to the coast this early in the summer. And by coast, I don’t mean San Diego or Los Angeles, where fuel dries much quicker and can be yellow by June in dry years.

These latest fires are in Big Sur and a couple hundred miles to the south in Goleta, where we are now. We began to watch this fire yesterday and the call came last night about 7:45 or so.

Within a short time I was back home and packing and then on the road for the two hour drive (without traffic). As I passed through Santa Barbara and the 101 turned more to the north, I could see the ever familiar red glow. For so many years and so many fires, the same glow lights up the senses like only an active fire can. Many times before the smell of smoke, or visual of falling ash, the glow tells us where to head.

A few miles north of Santa Barbara sits Goleta, the college town home to the University of California Santa Barbara. The setting here is stunning as the yellow topography of Southern California begins to give way to a more greenish plant life. As I come off the 101 freeway and head southwest on the overpass, to my right I see some massive orange and yellow flames dancing on the hillsides. The rim of red has drawn quite the crowd as streets are lined with onlookers, watching the flames put on a show.

The good news is the fire is headed downhill and the winds have calmed, homes are still a mile or so away. Firefighters have come from all over and the theme/complaint is again, “We are stretched so thin and there’s still so much time left in summer and fall fire season.”

As a native Californian and someone who has covered fires here for 10 years, I have never spoken with or seen anything like this year. So many fires burning so early and in areas that are normally not as fire prone. This picture, an engine next to a dozer, is one that is becoming too familiar.

Max-

I heard Fox News Radio has a lot of good talk shows, most of them hosted by FNC hosts. There is Brian and the Judge, The Radio Factor with Bill OReilly, and the Alan Colmes Show, among others.

On the radio station where i live, we only get the FNC news updates at the top of every hour, but we have shows like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Mike Buck, and Coast to Coast AM with George Noory.

Hey Max-

Remember when ED Hill used to host the 2pm time slot? But i guess they changed, to Martha McCallum and Trace Gallagher for both hours.

Comment by Max Kon

Brad: I think he’s also saying that we don’t know who Obama is.

ED Hill is doing the 5pm show at the moment.

I wouldn’t know about the raido, not on the radio here.

Comment by Brad

Max-

I heard that Patti Ann also does the radio news updates on FNC radio, but i havent really heard her.

Comment by Brad

Do you know who is currently filling in in the 5pm news slot? I havent been watching it all the time. Someone on another blog said that Laura show wasnt a permanent thing.

I read in a source that Julie Banderas wont be back on Red Eye until next month, dont know if its true or not.

Comment by Brad

Max-

I just saw that article you posted on BHO. Its very informative, but i really dont like the columnist who is writing it, Pat Buchannan. He claims to be a conservative, but he opposed the Iraq War, and he is a regular contributor to another liberal networks morning show. I am not going to mention the name here, but its the same left wing smear channel the late great Tim Russert worked for. He was one of the least great fair journalists to come from that network.

He is bascially saying in that column that BHO is this generations Ronald Reagan, and McCain is like Jimmy Carter, very unpopular, because of his associations with GW Bush. I guess he is entitled to his opinions.

Comment by Max Kon

Brad: an article you might like on BHO: http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=27398
Yep, i saw P.A.B.
Julie Banderas was on last week or the week before.

I’ve got no info on why Laura Ingraham is off

Well the most important thing about Ingrid is that she is now with her family.

Your last post here is funny!!!! And quite clever!

Did you also happen to catch Patti Ann on Red Eye last night? Fabulous as ever. I wonder what ever happened to Julie Banderas. I noticed she hasnt appeared on the show for a while.

Do you know what happened to Laura Ingraham? I heard she is on leav caring for her adopted children. Can you comfirm it?

@socalsurfer and Susan-AZ

just an FYI on I. Betancourt…

She has said some very different things to different audiences since her release. Other than the spontaneous joy seen in the video from just after the rescue, much of the rest of what she is showing the world is… a show.

Anyone read what Ms. Betancourt said about how Columbia should deal with FARC? Columbia should deal with them in a humane and loving way and start to talk to them. WOW!……….That just reaks of Stockholm’s Syndrome. I think she should take a year or two off to fully re-adjust and get her mind straight.

—————————————————————————————————

You are so right! This would be Stockholm’s Syndrome!
BTW— only because you are so cool– Colombia is spelled with two “o’s” and not with the “u” LOL

I have to acknowledge my old stomping grounds! ;)

It seems that Patti Ann has been doing a ton of filling in jobs, most recently she did the 5pm news hour during the 4th of July holiday. And most recently she has been seen filling in for Alisyn Camerota on Fox and Friends First the other week.

Brad: I’d never seen the activity pit website before, but i would think it was started by one of them.
I think it’s a great show. They are all insain! Patty Ann Brown is great when she’s a guest as well.

I think they like to think they know him if he’s on their friends. Even though it doesn’t really effect his policies (and if it does that’s another reason for him not to be president).

Comment by Brad

Another thing that started to happen with the youth vote, and was mentioned the other night, is those social networking sites(which i absolute hate, most of them are full of weirdos), they play a large role. I guess its a way young people can feel more connected to their candidates.

Comment by Brad

Not to mention you cant even challenge BHO on any issues, even question the partriotism of his wife, because you will be branded a racist. This isnt about race, its about his liberal beliefs. If this guy is going to run our country, he had better be scrutinized to the fullest extent.

Comment by Brad

Max-

It depends what kind of coverage of McCain you are talking about. FNC is the only place where i usually hear most of the positive stuff. All the rest is just badmouthing and dissing, talking about how his age and health, calling him McBush, etc.

I am guessing you are an avid fan of Red Eye. It seems like a lot of people i know hate the show, for some reason. Its very hilarious, especailly that Bill Schulz. I heard he is the guy who writes most of the jokes on the show.

Do you know who started this site,

activitypit.com

i am wondering if its Greg’s or one of the other panalists.

Comment by Brad

Hey Karen-

You make excellent points, BHO is just an empty suit. And if anyone remember the disasters of the Jimmy Carter years, he wants to take this country back in a time warp.

Its a well known fact that all liberals want to raise your taxes, so try and hide it between earmarks or pork barrel spending.

Comment by Brad

Susan-

I highly doubt BHO is intelligent, i wouldnt want to start giving the guy compliments. He is a part of the liberal smear machine, pure and simple. He is so inexperienced all he can hope for is to try and link McCain to a 3rd Bush term, but i highly doubt that will work. I guess he is blind, because Bush isnt running for a 2nd term.

Plus i dont think this will even happen, but i think BHO should choose that Sen Webb, like how it was discussed this morning on F&F. Because he apparently wrote some racy novel, and it will give the Conservatives more of a reason to go after him.

What do you mean “going with the flow”?

Take Care.

Comment by Karen 2 (K2)

Here’s my take on BHO… Just another career politician! Will say what he needs to get the vote……Questionable if he has any true convictions. All speak was far left to get the nomination…..now his speak is centrist to get the vote. NOT to be trusted.

And, here’s a guy who wants to raise taxes…….and just think how is CA going to pay for all the firefighters. They do not work for free! So, where is CA going to get the money – yep, you guessed it, TAXES. So, look out CA residents……. state taxes increase – federal taxes increase – property values continue to decline…….NOT good.

I dont think BHO is a good person at all, its just an act. I think he is an anti American, just like all of the people he is associated with, Reverand Wright, Father Pfleger, and that terrorist who once bombed the US years ago, who is now a professor at some college campus. He wouldnt be connected to them, if he didnt share his values.

Comment by Brad

That site about those firefighters is very informative. Its going to be just like those working on Ground Zero right after the 9/11 attacks. A lot of them got respiratory problems, and some even passed away. I just want to let everyone know that there efforts will always be remembered.

Susan: Yeah, we can both celebrate! I’ll get down all my Poland stuff.

Brad: I tried today, don’t think i convinced her, but i hope she looks closer at his message and sees it really is never the same.
At least when McCain changes his message he generally does it at the same time as information changes (old Polish saying: only a pig never changes his mind). But to change it every day is too much, especially if it’s back and forth and not just one way.
And as in a Gregalogue: “There are only so many recipies” lol :D
Thouh i’m sure if he wasn’t the media’s choice all his inconsistancies would be at the forfront. McCains actually seem to get a lot of coverage each, but he doesn’t make many.

That is to be expected, but your efforts arent going in be in vain, i am sure you can convince certain people of McCain platform message.

I dont know what is drawing young voters to BHO, but its probably because they want change, and this guy supposedly is a smooth talking politican, who is very rich, and can probably buy his sway into the White House if he can.

I know what you mean, BHO has recently flip flopped so much, i dont even know who the real person is anymore. Most recently, he had taking on some very conservative beliefs.

Of course, the liberal mainstream media isnt going to knock down any of BHO’s views. In their mind, he is their Golden Boy.

But if McCain does the same thing, they would be all over him, hounded him like a junkyard dog. Its just like what happened to McCains wife, some of her recipes she wrote in a book seemed similar to another from Betty Crockers, and the liberal media has a field day over it.

this link went through– much thanks- I see the fund raiser is going to be in LA– with Jay Leno– I love Jay Leno– now if Adam could be there as well, this would make this perfect!!!

Were you around for the Rodeo-Chediski fires in 2002? (Two separate fires– one caused by an arsonist and the other by a stranded person doing smoke signals, I believe) Is this the one you made reference to?

The second largest one after these was the Cave Creek fire and can you believe the firefighters were just there to remind the locals to remove all dry shrubs within 75 feet of their homes? Why did they have to remind these people?

And my hat off to you for putting yourself out there and being so dedicated!

Visit http://www.firefightercancersupport.org. I will be glad to provide addtional contacts and information if needed. I noticed in the news that the number of hospital visits for smoke related problems in California has increased. A common practice used to fight wildfires is to fight fire with more fire (backburning, burnouts, etc). Hence more smoke for the public to breathe. I spent much of 2002 on the fire line in your great state on several fires from Mexico to the Upper Rim of the Grand Canyon. Thanks for you comments. Take care.

Brad: I do try and spread the word, it’s hard when people don’t want to listen though.

I think I understand what it is that attracts people to Barrak. Ever have something (book, movie, music, food, whatever) that looked really good, and a brief description of it sounds really great? But once you start to use it you find the best part of it was the first impression?

Obama shifts his message a lot, so if you only follow say local news coverage and politcal adds there then you get his targeted message to you and he seems like a good guy, but if you watch national news you get to see him in different settings with different messages. Thanks to the TV and the internet gone are the days when a politician could tour the nation saying different things in different places and not get caught out. Sadly the MSM isn’t focusing very heavily on Barrak’s shifting.

Hey Max-

It doesnt matter your age, its never too early to get interested in politics, and what is happening in this world. Even though you live overseas in England. Try emailing your friends and spreading the word about FoxNews, and how its the most fair and balanced and informative network out there, not to mention its the number on cable news network in the US for almost 10 years.

I sure hope you saw that FNC special about the youth vote yesterday, if not, they will probably show it again soon.

I just have an uncomfortable feeling about this years election. I know in years past, the youth vote really could have swayed the election, but they really didnt show up. It seems like most young people are amazing by this candidate named BHO, He is flawed in many ways, i couldnt even begin list the reasons. And what is this stupidity i have been hearing about young female college students fainting whenever they see BHO? No offense, but what is so amazing about this guy? Maybe its the fact that all he craves is power.

That is precisely the reason why McCain supporters like yourself need to rally behind him, and spread the word about his message on college campuses and student unions.

well, the fire that started near me wasnt arson. It started as a propane explosion in some poor guy’s RV.

well, just 15 minutes ago a brush fire in the muholland/ malibu cyn road area just started. I find this very interesting as this is about 2 to 5 miles away from where that guy said he ran those kids away. Winds are just starting to blow to the ocean right now.

I totally agree with the person who said the “homeosexual’s” right to marry should be overturned. I am all for equal rights, but this isnt the way it should be. What is our society nowadays teaching our next generation how to act? Traditional marriage is a very sacred thing, and it shouldnt be changed, ever.

Just heard about the first casuality of the CA wildfires, apparently a volunteer fireman collapsed after battling a round of the horrfic flame. He should get a medal of honor for bravery, for his heroic acts :)

Adam, It would be good and somewhat reasuring to viewers if your report focused some on the Incident Action Plan. The public in general could learn a lot from the Daily Briefings with incident objectives, fire weather forcast, fire behavor, personnel assignments, communication plan, resources assigned, fire location, air operations etc. Happy 4th of July!

well, some guy riding a bike coming out of the state park where I live just said to my nieghbor that he chased some kids trying to start a fire. Adam, knows where I live. My area hasnt burned since 1958 and if it goes. It will burn right down tothe ocean in about 3 to 6 hours. Not a good way to start the holiday!

Kathy–

I checked out your blog earlier and I posted a comment– and thank you sooooooooo much!

Brad– I am not sure of your age but I use to love to watch those horror stories– not anymore– although last night, I did watch Megan about the Brooke incident– whoever filled in for O’Reilly made some pleas to the people in Vermont– Vermont needs to make some changes in their laws– when it comes to child molesters– Definitely– Wendy Murphy, yes, on CNN, was all heated up about this– I like her!

is this loyalty? team spirit? mindless mechanistic repetition?
((faint grin))

…friday morning test post.
Only you could think of something this creative!! Call it your daily habit- LOL

Adam– I was checking out the links of blogs to visit on some of the blogs and your blog is on various people’s blogs as which blog to visit– You are quite popular! LOL

I HATE fires– my closest encounter to one was when I came home one night from work and the fire department and the media were all there– (apartment) Apparently, the lady who lived in the apartment with her husband fell asleep or passed out with a cigarette and the place went up in fire– She died and Dick, her husband, had smoke inhalation where they had to do a tracheostomy. I still remember this as if this were today!!!

Happy 4th– we are headed out to the ex-capital of Arizona for the day–

stay safe to all! Praying that kids don’t play with fireworks today!

Adam,

unfourtantly no……it was akward enough going up to them and asking for a pic. 99 percent of the people there were like diplomats and special people who see those ppl everyday soo they didnt stick out much. So i just like went up to them with a friend and asked for a pic. It was funny to see that Bibi didnt talk to Linvi or Barak but Linvi spoke to Barak or to his wife at least. Peres was a lucky shot i pushed throw a million ppl and guards to get that shot and the IDF chief of Staff was chill walking around lol…….. I thought it would be super akward to be like ” soooooo what do you think … lol…

BTW …… notice the hooters sticker….. i didnt realize i had it on me when i took the pics lol… ill crop it out eventually ……. they had hooter girls walking around giving out stickers ……. I didnt see Tobin or Ninin there …… there was Israeli press doing live shots….. ? =s

Olmert ran in and out with Peres…. gave there speeches and ran away…. all the other ppl stayed for awhile before and after the speeches …
