Adam Housley’s Live … Underwater?

Part II: 3:34pm

They are all members of the Coast Guard Auxilery, the team from Cinema Aquatics, now working along with our fantastic Los Angeles Fox Technicians Eric Graychock and Rich DeAnda, to make a live report underwater possible.

For each dive demonstration, William Hall heads out with our photographer Eric Barnes while Rob Trussel and I team up. Our 100 yard swim last only a few minutes thanks to fins and some strong kicks. Once we reach the ships’ prop and keel, we meet up with four divers from the LA Port PD. The 8 of us prepare to dive as Jim Pearson and Curtis Marzinzik from Cinema Aquatics, along with Graychock, moor the boat to the aft.

Ten minutes out from each live report, we sink to the depths of the port.

The green, murky water allows for only a few feet of visibility. At this depth we see the dive team conduct its training operation, the copper glow of the ships massive prop and the mossy fur of the rudder, peering through the brackish water.

Above the team in the pontoon boat drops an HD underwater video camera system, connected to our wireless system above water through a blue video cable.

I can hear the program through an underwater audio system (underwater coms), where a cable is dropped into the water to transmit and also receive my audio. Above, Eric Graychock manually switches audio out and in, so they don’t cross over each other and thus cancell each other out. Got it? I am sure you do, it sounds complicated and is has become quit a set up and technical cooperation.

NEW BEHIND THE SCENES VIDEO

Part One: 1:54pm

Ten feet above me, ships pass through one of the most essential ports in the world — the port of Los Angeles. My photographer Eric Barnes and I are scuba diving with the Port of Los Angeles dive team, 15 men committed to serve, protect and in this case prevent.

The water hovers around 67 degrees and we can see only about five to eight feet in front of us. Diving in any situation is dangerous, but in this case, the traffic in the port is incredible. Tug boats, supply ships, cargo ships, catamarans, cruise ships, water taxi’s and personal boats, among others, clog the channel. These divers avoid it all and in many cases dirty water from port activity and city runoff. Their job … to inspect everything. Hulls of ships, pipelines and docks, just to name a few. Of course that coincides with everyday police work and even water recovery.

7,500 acres handling 150 billion dollars in commerce, that’s what this area is all about. As Port Police Captain Mike Graychik tells me, “Port operations go on 24-7 and diving in the port is dangerous diving, it’s dark, it’s dirty, there’s a lot of structures in the harbor that are potentially dangerous.”

And in this day and age there are people and elements that remain a danger. Groups around the globe intent on denying freedom and damaging the safety and security of the United States.

Says the Captain, “Our mission is to ensure the safety and security of the port and our officers train for that. They have the mindset that we’re combatting terrorism here and we’re focused everyday on ensuring that we make the port as safe as it can possibly be.”

So, how do we show these men and their demonstration live? We’ve hired the team from Cinema Aquatics, a team of former militaruy divers who now primarily work in movie and television production … as far as we know, we are the first news crew ever live underwater, let alone in water under a busy port.

More on the technology after our next live report.

Susan-

Can you ask John if he has any latest Britney news, if you have the chance?

Maybe you can use your investigative skills to aid the local authorities in the search for that monster who commited that honor killings. I heard you are good in dealing with forensics.

John would have the Britney updates! :D

re: the father to the Honor killings is probably back in Egypt– they take care of their own there and his actions would be justified by their beliefs so he is probably well hidden! And with the garb they wear there, he can hid easily and walk around freely!

It is mind blowing that they havent found that father who killed those sister, i wonder if he fled to his native middle eastern country? Or as reported, maybe he is hiding somewhere in the US, in NYC. I sur hope this guy is caught very soon. I also get the feeling the police arent doing enough.

My mentor sent me the article!!!

I did see the segment on Honor Killings– As the taxi incident was talked about on Adam’s old blog and some author came into Adam’s blog and made a comment about these type of killings– the thread started on some issue but in our digression, those killings of the sisters came into the conversation– Very sad — beyond words!

I know what you mean, hearing of any kind of death or tragedy always makes me feel sad and stressed out.

By any chance see that FNC special last night hosted by Megyn Kelly about honor killings here in the US? It was so upsetting watching it, i couldnt even sleep well afterwards.

Thanks for that article on BHO. I guess it is damage control time for his campaign crew, trying to explain the big mistake he made by not going to visit those wounded troops. How much of an elitist can he get?

Statement on Barack Obama’s Cancelled Troop Visits

ARLINGTON, VA — Today, Chief Warrant Officer (4th class) Michael J. Durant (Ret.) issued the following statement on Barack Obama’s canceled visit to Ramstein and Landstuhl:

“Over the last week, Barack Obama made time in his busy schedule to hold a rally with 200,000 Germans in Berlin, hold a press conference with French President Nicholas Sarkozy in Paris, and hold a solo press conference in front of 10 Downing Street in London. The Obama campaign had also scheduled a visit with wounded U.S. troops at Ramstein Air Base in Germany, but this stop was canceled after it became clear that campaign staff, and the traveling press corps, would not be allowed to accompany Senator Obama.

“I’ve spent time at Ramstein recovering from wounds received in the service of my country, and I’m sure that Senator Obama could have made no better use of his time than to meet with our men and women in uniform there. That Barack Obama believes otherwise casts serious doubt on his judgment and calls into question his priorities.”

Michael Durant, CW4 (Retired), US Army; born July 23, 1961 in Berlin, NH. He entered the United States Army in August 1979. Following basic training he attended the Defense Language Institute, and was then assigned to the 470th Military Intelligence Group, Fort Clayton, Panama as a Spanish voice intercept operator. He then completed helicopter flight training at Fort Rucker, Alabama. Upon appointment to Warrant Officer 1 in November 1983, he completed the UH60 Black Hawk Qualification Course and was assigned to the 377th Medical Evacuation Company, Seoul Korea. His next assignment was with the 101st Aviation Battalion, Fort Campbell, Kentucky, where he performed duties as an instructor pilot.

Michael joined the 160th Special Operations Group on August 1, 1988. Assigned to D company, he performed duties as Flight Lead and Standardization Instructor Pilot. He participated in combat operations Prime Chance (Persian Gulf in 1989), Just Cause (Panama invasion in 1989), Desert Storm (Liberation of Kuwait in 1991), and Gothic Serpent (Somalia in 1993).

On October 3, 1993, while piloting an MH60 Black Hawk in Mogadishu, Somalia, he was shot down and held captive by hostile forces. He was released eleven days later.

I understand your frusration and anger. I posted a couple of comments featuring some interesting articles, but they never showed well. It seems like the problem is only happening with FNC blogs that are being moderated. I dont think i have ever had trouble on Janices blog, and i think you also post there regularly.

FL Sunshine-

I didnt really have a chance to catch the NASCAR race today. I must have missed a spectacular event. Remember the other week when an arguement and confrontation from Danica Patrick to a fellow driver got violent. Talk about road rage!

Comment by Brad

Did you all hear about that gunman who opened fire at a Tennesee Church? 1 dead, and 8 people were wounded? Its really shcoking, a Church should be a place for worship, not for people to be in danger. It seems strikingly similar to an incident that happened in another Church last year.

Plus a fan was seriously injured after plunging 25 feet from the handrails of an escalator at Shea Stadium during Saturday’s New York Mets game, police and team officials said.

Any thoughts on all this? I also had a ton of other posts over the last couple of days, but they didnt come up as usual.

EVERYONE–

After taking a beating from Susan…I can now explain the slow blogging of the last couple weeks. I have a ton of excuses and they are all true. The last couple of weeks I have had limited internet connections (fires and underwater stories) and also birthdays/weddings and family events. Also, there are all sorts of changes going on at the website and problems with WordPress. It’s all getting ironed out and I am now getting back into the swing of things again. Thanks for hanging in!! I am also working on some stuff….more on that to come. In the meantime…..I have a new thread because I am at the Yosemite fire….yet another one.

Anyone out there watching the NASCAR race today??? This is history! Unreal!!! Goodyear put out a poor tire and it has been one car after another to have a blow out. They will have to shorten the race or they will for SURE run out of tires as each driver comes in when someone has a blowout and they all get new tires (for good reason too as I’m sure they are all holding their breath wondering…am I next to blow a tire).

Subj: IN OBAMA’S OWN WORDS —

In Obama’s own words (Very, very Scary)

This guy wants to be our President and control our government.
Pay close attention to the last comment!!
Below are a few lines from Obama’s books.
These are passages in his own words:

From Dreams of My Father: ‘I ceased to advertise my mother’s
race at the age of 12 or 13, when I began to suspect that by doing
so I was ingratiating myself to whites.’

From Dreams of My Father: ‘I found a solace in nursing a pervasive
sense of grievance and animosity against my mother’s race.’

From Dreams of My Father: ‘There was something about him that
made me wary, a little too sure of himself, maybe. And white.’

From Dreams of My Father: ‘It remained necessary to prove
which side you were on, to show your loyalty to the black masses,
to strike out and name names.’

From Dreams of My Father: ‘I never emulate white men and
brown men whose fates didn’t speak to my own.
It was into my father’s image, the black man, son of Africa ,
that I had packed all the attributes I sought in myself, the
attributes of Martin and Malcolm, DuBois and Mandela.’

And here’s the clincher: (grab on to something when you read this:)

From Audacity of Hope: ‘I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.’
_____________________________________

Holy Moley!!!!! Is anyone paying attention out there???????
Does that mean if elected President he would hand us over
to the Muslims????????

And it’s in PRINT AND IN HIS OWN WORDS!

HE WANTS YOU TO THINK HE IS.

@LDG–

Remember the Pablo Esobar trivia question?– the history channel had a two hour segment on him– I managed to see the last 45 minutes– very interesting– I managed to get to watch how The Pepes– Delta Force, Search Bloc and Centra Spike all played a role in killing Pablo Escobar– what was ironic is how Pablo used his son to communicate with the outside as he tried to hide and Col. Martinez’s (Search Bloc) son found Pablo through a conversation Pablo was having with his son– two fathers with sons– one representing the bad side and the other the good side– what a tale! Some grisly footage– especially on the rooftop after he was shot– The segment ended with introducing FARC as picking up Pablo Escobar’s techniques– I immediately thought of you and our trivia question which John guessed right away as who it was! LOL

The latest in BHO’s liberal views. This time he is questioning why our troops in Iraq are watching FNC? Give me a break? This guy obviously is so inexeperienced he dont know a thing about the wellfare of our troops.

http://www.mediabistro.com/tvnewser/fnc/fnc_to_obama_troops_can_change_the_channel_90038.asp#disqus_thread

This is his first attack on FNC, remember in that Glamour magazine article when he attacked Hannity and FNC for all the negative publicity over him and his wife.

I have something to say, what did he think this was going to be? a free ride to the white house? If he is going to be our next president, he better be scrutinized to the fullest.

Hey Becky-

You are absolutely a whiz when it comes to computers. It took me a while, using trial and error, to figure out that with certain browser, you can view videos and other media. Internet explorers are famous for freezing up and having those error messages appear like crazy, then you have to take the trouble of restarting your computer. It wastes a lot of precious time, not to mention its wearing in down in the long run.

Susan-

Or course Jimmy Carter and BHO email, they are both the typical politician, and liberals who share the same views. I just wish McCain and the GOP would show more ads linking the both of them, and there policies. Because most young people these days, dont even know who Carter is. I bet after they get a good history lesson, they would probably faint also, not because of BHO, but simply because of what dire danger our county is going to be like if this man becomes our next president.

You are going into space, i would be very frightened, you hear about all the space shuttle explosions that have happened through the last couple of decades, and its scary. It must be awesome to explore different planets and see how it is like, but i wouldnt want to risk my life just for that.

I dont know, i guess you arent really safe when you do out to the wilderness or take a hike, because you never know the dangers that lurk.

LDG-

Do you happen to get FNC out there in Japan? If not, i have a link that might be of benefit to you. Its on the first comment of the Tony Snow tribute thread. I posted there for another bloggers. Hope this helps.

Patty-

I know with certain versions of Internet Explorer, you can view Youtube videos, but with firefox you cant, i guess its the fact of whether a person had media flash player installed in their computer.

As much as i admire Arnold, sometimes he acts like a liberal. Maybe because he was one, until he decided to run for Governor. Plus on another interview on another liberal network, he suggested that BHO flip flopping is a good thing. Is he out of his mind?

You may not know that AFN (Armed Forces Network), the broadcast service for overseas American military bases, was forced a year or so ago to add Ed Schultz (Progressive talk-radio, e.g. the Left) to their radio programing to “balance” the long-time provision of Rush Limbaugh’s program (Limbaugh, for those outside the U.S., is a Conservative talker, e.g. the Right)…

…and E. Schultz is, well, shall we say less than widely popular with the troops…

..and now, we get this:

http://amyproctor.squarespace.com/blog/2008/7/24/obama-wonders-why-soldiers-are-always-watching-fox-news.html

(yes, a private ‘blog, but one that references the FOX News video about this)

…and yes, AFN does carry all the Mainstream Media…

…and I have to ask:

What part of “we don’t like to listen to defeatist nonsense while we are off serving our country” does Mr. Obama *not* understand?

and with that, Be well and safe All, for I am off for the day.

Its probably from all the stress of the campaign trail. Plus BHO smokes, and its probably ruining his health, so i dont think he is fit to run for office. And with the free publicity he is getting on those liberal networks, its like he is already being elected to be president. The reason he has the youth vote is because they are all mesmerized by him, so much so that they get fainting spells.

Well– I took a very long break from here– I had to get busy–

However, I would like to say about Adam’s murky scuba diving is he does have a purpose or maybe an important issue when he reports– A) Environmental issues– B) Subs drug smuggling

But if you watch the tele, which I have not today, but I did yesterday, I saw how that one girl who is in jail up for bond because her daughter is missing is getting bonded to be released and maybe, only maybe, the whereabouts of this missing girl may be disclosed only if this girl has immunity? Meanwhile the cadaver dogs found a scent in the trunk of a car! All this attention on another everyday incident!

Meanwhile– ocean is polluted– who knows what the others are doing to bring in more drugs- These are big issues! Drugs brings murders! Pollution in the ocean endangers!

Brad– you are welcome about the Chavez links– He is also trying to stay in power as he is about ready to be ousted in the next year, I believe– I read his supporters are trying to get him to be re-elected. That man is not JUST dangerous– he is just crazy!!! LOCO! And he uses his oil as his shield!

I just noticed something about Obambi. He stopped dying his hair black and he is letting his grey hair come out. I’d love to see a photoof him from last november compared to today. Why did he do this? Well,IM guessing since he already has the youth vote (hence the dying in the first place to fit in) Now,he has to go after the boomers (he has to fit in with themtoo to get their votes). One way to fit in is to start looking like them. Let the grey hair fly!,,,,,,,,Man this guy really is just a marketing excersize isnt he?

Sylvia-

I know what you mean. I just reposted several comments that i posted last night, and somehow they magically disappeared. Strange.

Thanks for the link on the Japan earthquake. It looks like everyone there is safe :)

Susan-

Thanks for all those Hugo Chavez links. He is definately a tyrant that the Venezuelan people need to oust immediately.

Adam,
Underwater reporting??!! I love it! I gotta admit it was hard to understand you during the live show’s on Fox, but I did love the ‘angle’ you took on this story! You’re by far one of the best Fox reporters because of the energy, intellect, and your williness to report from beneath a boat.

If you were given an assignment to report a story live from space, would you go to space for us? just wondering! Keep up the good work!

Matt-

Thanks!! And YES!! I would report from space any time. Wouldn’t that be cool.
