Nazi Hunters

There will never be a way for any of us to understand what so many faced at the hands of the Adolph Hitler and Nazi regime, unless we actually lived the horror.

I remember first learning about the Holocaust in depth in the 7th grade at Redwood Middle School. It became a memorable meeting as I listened to the author and survivor Barry Spanjaard talk about the horrors of Bergen-Belsen. His book ‘Don’t Fence Me In’ still sits on my book shelf.

Since that time, I always take notice when yet another Nazi war criminal is caught, or even deported and have followed the hunt for Nazis a bit closer since I met Rabbi Marvin Hier a few years back. With the capture of a man in Washington state (alleged to be a member of the SS) and the hunt for ‘Dr Death’ Aribert Heim in South America, we decided to profile the hunt for Nazis 63 years after the fall of the ‘Third Reich.’

Our live report will be posted here, but I wanted to give you some raw interview video that will tug at your heart, make you appreciate your freedom. Elisabeth Mann still speaks at the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles every Sunday and I had the fortunate opportunity to hang on her every word. She is a remarkable woman with incredible strength.

A portion of her interview is here, along with some thoughts from Rabbi Hier.

I was introduced to this horror story when I was in my teens by my father- He made me read Treblinka, Survival of Auschwitz, William Frankl-the founder of Logotherapy, Babi Yar, Jerzy Kosinksi, and of course, Anne Frank!

I struggled through Inside The Third Reich by Albert Speer– At the age of 15.

what is so vivid to me are those pictures! I can never forget these as long as I live–

why did my father do this to me? I have no clue– but I do know he always claimed to be an agnostic and maybe this was part of it! So as he said while he was alive.

I was so happy to see Adolf Eichmann die– The Banality of evil! I believe his last words were:
“Long live Germany. Long live Austria. Long live Argentina. These are the countries with which I have been most closely associated and I shall not forget them. I had to obey the rules of war and my flag. I am ready…” Another rumor was said- before his death, he wanted to be converted to be a Jew-
(what a sick joker)

Who was that other freak? Martin Bormann? The Face of the Third Reich- Did he committ suicide? Whatever! Frigging coward!

Juan Peron, president of Argentina, set aside more than 10,000 blank passports and identity cards for Nazi fugitives. Bormann at the top of the list! Bribery– these guys brought over much jewelry, art, gold, and whatever they got from the atrocities to buy themselves a safe haven!

and of course– their excuse- I was only following orders!

And that Hitler started off convincing the masses because he was an eloquent speaker and Germany was hurting! I think he started off by standing on tables in bars and anywhere shooting off his mouth!

And what is more distressing is these acts towards humans still exist!!!!!! Just under a different guise!

And as Rabbi Hier said– too many thousands got away with it– and still too many thousands get away with it– aka terrorists!

Now you know how I feel about this! LOL

Those working in the modern R2P environment owe a debt beyond measure to the efforts to keep the memory of the Holocaust alive, and to keep on with the pursuit for justice.

We also owe a debt to journalists willing to keep this a part of living memory.

Thank you.

The Nazi regimes holds a terrible place in history, and i am glad that progress of mankind has come to point where terror like this will never happen ever again. It always frightens me that there are still people out there who share Hitler’s beliefs. But they are just in the minority.

I had childhood friends whose parents where survivors of the Nazi camps. It was very chilling to see the prisoner numbers tattooed by the Nazis on the arms of these survivors.

We must never forget what happened and never again allow it to happen.

There are still many Nazis in the US and Canada that need to be brought to justice. I care not one whit that they may be old grandfatherly types suffering from the ravages of old age. They should fear capture every night as they try to sleep. I call upon our elected officials to rouse the politcal will unto themselfves to track down every last one of them. Whether it is was 50 years ago or 500 years ago their crimes call out for retribution.

Russell - I agree!!!!

When I was young I remember going to see “The Hiding Place” the story of Corrie Ten Boom. WOW, what an impact that movie had on me and I later read the book as well. Ten Boom’s family hid countless Jews and were themselves eventually caught and put in the concentration camps as well and her family suffered great loss along the Jews themselves. Very moving.

Z Man - have you ever read “Islam Revealed - a Christian Arab’s view of Islam”? It is written by a great man named Anish Shorrosh who unfortunately is struggling in his older age. I think the constant fear of looking over his shoulder for an enraged Muslim may be getting to him. I have met him on several occasions and he has so much knowledge on this matter and has even debated in the Middle East with leaders of the Muslim religion.

My Mom and Dad lived through the Nazi occupation of Holland as teenagers. They hadn’t met each other yet , however their stories of those terrifying days, weeks, months and years are eerily similar. The stories I’ve heard over the years about those times could fill 1000 pages of these blogs………and that would only tell one of their tales.

On my Mom’s side of the family, are stories of heroic acts and a relentlessness in helping Jews escape the country from the Nazi’s wrath. Although born a Christian, her family and neighbors felt it a duty to help the Jews escape to England at the expense of being found out themselves. The penalty for aiding a Jew was execution…………right where you stood.
I can remember, as a youngster growing up in Holland, my Mom telling me about the war as we walked the very streets and alleyways in Den Haag where she, and other members of the family and neighborhood, would help hide Jews from SS search squads until it was safe to move them out of the country via the underground to England. One day, on one of our walks, she stopped in front of a modest row house, stared at it and began to cry. Being only 6 or 7 years old I didn’t understand why she was crying until she told me that this was a house where a Jewish family was massacred by the SS and Gestapo…………they had been packing what little personal effects they could bring with them for their escape………. scheduled later that night.
My Dad fled his hometown when the searches began to round up, not only Jews, but any male that was 16 years old or older. These young non-Jewish teenagers were being rounded up to work in the many Nazi work camps, where they were literally worked to death. To be able to escape as a young man you had to join the underground……………. Dad never likes talking about those days too much, other about something funny that may have happened, but one of my uncles ( his brother ) told me several years ago that my Dad was responsible for many a Nazi’s death during his “tour” in the underground. When I ask Dad about it, he just gets that stare that all soldiers get when they remember the horrors of war………………and it’s best to change the subject.
Mom is gone now and Dad’s getting older, but, although there are other reasons too, it’s their deeds during that terrible war that makes them the only two heros I’ve ever known…………
I know now why my parents told me and my brothers about those years during the war. It wasn’t to boast about their heroic efforts, but rather to warn us………….
Those who ignore the past are bound to re-live it

John-

Not much I can say, but thank you for passing along the story. Truly amazing……and it seems like we do forget.

For the record, the name is properly spelled “Adolf”, not “Adolph”. “Adolph” is an American variant.

Comment by Gene

I used to think the Germans were bad until I learned that the United States did the same thing to German soldiers after the war. One estmate is 1.7 million were killed by the US after the war. They were starved to death and if any of them broke(started crying, shouting, etc))they were shot. As far as I can tell, the figure is about half a million Germans killed in U.S. concentration camps. No wonder the Germans don’t like Americans today. Nobody cares that the Germans had their personal items stolen from them and then starved to death. There is a Jew that is wanted for war crimes against German civilians. He alone killed hundreds of boys over 13 years and old men. The last I heard, he was still alive and living in Isreal. They won’t extridite him because he was ONLY killing Germans. Justice demands that these people be punished the same as Nazi’s . But winners always write history and leave out their misdeeds,So bad people get away with crimes as long as their side wins. Massacres on all sides. Look at this site, they don’t pull punches with anybody. http://members.iinet.net.au/~gduncan/massacres.html

After the inhuman way the Jews were treated by the Nazis you would think Israelis would be the last people on earth to use collective punishments as Government policy on her occupied neighbors. German soldiers were tried and executed at Nuremberg for using collective punishment as a terror weapon. Maybe it’s the human condition that we all subconsciously learn lessons from our enemy.

ADAM, this is for you…..,,

Security specialists said Saturday that hackers are taking increasing aim at iPhones and Macintosh computers as the hot-selling Apple devices gain popularity worldwide.
Hackers have historically focused devious efforts on computers using Windows operating systems because the Microsoft software has more than 90 percent of the global market, promising evil-doers a wealth of targets.

Macintosh computers have been gaining market share and catching the interest of hackers, according to Zero Day Initiative (ZDI) security vulnerability analyst Cameron Hotchkies.

“There are more eyes looking over Apple products for vulnerabilities,” Hotchkies told AFP at a notorious annual DefCon gathering of hackers in Las Vegas.

“It has slowly been growing as a target people are more and more interested in.”

Hotchkies specializes in Apple software as part of a ZDI team devoted to scrutinizing programming holes and crafting “patches” to prevent hackers from exploiting weaknesses.

More than a thousand people crammed into his DefCon talk about hacking Apple software. He was peppered with technical questions at the close of the session.

“There are a lot more people getting into it and really getting their hands dirty,” said Hotchkies, who noted an obvious spike this year in the number of DefCon attendees toting Macintosh laptops.

“I’ve been seeing a lot of reverse engineering on the Apple platform.”

Part of the reason for increased popularity of Macintosh computers is that Apple has made the machines friendlier to running programs popular on Windows-based machines.

Hackers experienced with attacking Windows programs can apply some of their know-how to software modified to run on Macintosh computers.

Developers that re-craft Windows programs for Macintosh systems might not be adept at building security components on the latest Leopard operating system used in Apple machines.

“Windows developers take their code and make it work on Apple,” Hotchkies said. “They could take potential vulnerabilities with them or possibly create new ones because they are working on an entirely different platform.”

Apple’s Safari operating system is the basis for internet browsing using iPhones, which are basically handheld mini-computers with telephone, music, and video viewing capabilities.

It took about a month for someone to hack a first-generation iPhone after its release, but an iPhone 3G was cracked within hours of the start of sales in July.

The hack is crowned a “jail break” because it liberates iPhone models from the shackles of deals Apple has with telecom giants providing exclusive service to the devices in varying countries.

“It shows people are getting proficient at analyzing Apple software,” Hotchkies said.

“There are people looking at the iPhone. We pass vulnerabilities on to vendors, and when I communicate with Apple the first thing they ask is if we’ve tested it on the iPhone. They don’t want to be surprised.”

Apple engineers are also addressing “legacy issues,” protecting old software from new threats, according to Hotchkies.

Was unable to post earlier as Becky and I got back from our trip to the midwest to visit family. One of the weirder moments in my life was back in the 70’s when, stationed in England with the Air Force, my husband and I went to a Retreat at the US Serviceman’s Center in Berchtesgaden, Germany. The hotel that we stayed at was the one that Hitler built for his guests. I remember walking down the hallway and thinking that 30 years ago Hitler was walking down this same hallway. Very weird feeling. We ended that trip going to Corrie Ten Boom’s house in Haarlem, The Netherlands (The Hiding Place) and seeing where her family had hid the Jews.
