Bus Crashes En Route to Religious Festival

4:58 p.m. Leha Nguyen had a bad feeling about the bus ride. They were passing Dallas and she felt the bus driver was going a little fast. But she shrugged it off and settled in to try and get some sleep. She and the 54 other people on the bus from Houston had a long trip ahead of them. They were going to a religious festival in Missouri that attracts some 50,000 Vietnamese Catholics each year. They were going to celebrate the Virgin Mary.

Nguyen fell asleep. She awoke to chaos. The bus had flipped over on its side and people were frantic. Others weren’t moving at all. Nguyen described how people near her were piled on top of each other. She tried to help a woman next to her. Nguyen was bleeding, but she made her way out of the bus. When ambulance crews got on the scene, victims were in shock and scared. Many couldn’t be comforted or ask questions because they didn’t speak the same language as rescue workers. That’s because many of the victims are elderly and only speak Vietnamese.

As one emergency room doctor in Sherman put it– there were no “walking wounded.” People were hurt seriously. A nursing supervisor said tears and prayers filled the E.R. A  priest sat with Nguyen, forgave her of her sins and blessed her, she says, even though she wasn’t dying. I didn’t have a chance to clarify, but it sounds like the priest was administering a sacrament, the Anointing of the Sick. Nguyen says began to cry. But, she says, she feels lucky. The woman who had been sitting next to her, the one she had been trying to help, Nguyen later found out, had died. So have thirteen other people.

Police are still investigating what went wrong. Early reports seem to indicate a front tire blew out, but now there are also questions about the safety record of the bus company.

12:00: 14 people are now dead because of a charter bus crash in North Texas. We arrived at the scene just as a huge tow truck was carrying the bus away. The entire right side of the bus is smashed and the inside looked burned. Police say the right front tire may have blown out, causing the bus to hit a guardrail, flip on its side and eventually skid to a stop.

From the scene in Sherman, we went to a hospital just a few miles away. It’s where 16 of the victims from the bus were originally taken. The hospital expects to update us in a press conference at 2pm local time. In the meantime, family members of the victims are making their way from Houston. The bus had been carrying 55 Vietnamese Catholics to a religious festival in Missouri.

9:32: We are on our way to a deadly bus crash about an hour and a half Northeast of Dallas.

A private bus of Vietnamese Catholics was on its way from Houston to Missouri for a religious festival. The accident happened after midnight in Sherman. Police have initially said the right front tire may have blown out, causing the accident. They said they scene was horrific.

Fifty-five people were believed to be on the bus at the time. At least 13 of them are dead. The rest are scattered at a handful of North Texas hospitals. The bus driver survived the crash so he may be able to help police understand what happenend.

Two vehicles had been following behind the bus when it crashed. There were carrying clergy members, who probably witnessed the entire accident.

I live just 20 miles from Sherman. This community is in shock. My prayers and love are extended to the families as well as the crews working the scene. I understand that it was so bad that the firmen took a moment to say a prayer. Horrible, horrible tragedy. Thank you, Fox News, for your coverage.
