U.S. Soldiers Win Olympic Gold

Pfc. Hancock's Medal

Pfc. Vincent Hancock won this gold medal for Olympic skeet shooting in Beijing.

Some of the elite marksmen who train American soldiers for combat are also Olympic athletes.

On tonight’s FOX Report w/ Shepard Smith, we feature Pfc. Vincent Hancock, who won the gold medal for skeet shooting at the Olympics in Beijing. The contest came down to an “instant death” tie-breaker between Hancock and Norwegian marksman Tore Brovold.

Hancock is one of six soldiers in the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (AMU) to compete in the 2008 Olympics. A fellow solider, Spc. Walton Glenn Eller III, won a gold medal in the men’s double trap competition.

Members of the AMU have brought home nearly two dozen Olympic medals since the unit’s inception in 1956.

President Dwight Eisenhower created the AMU at Ft. Benning, GA to raise marksmanship standards throughout the U.S. Army. In addition to international competitions, Hancock and his fellow marksmen serve as instructors, preparing soldiers for combat.

The AMU also includes a research and development team of gunsmiths and technicians.

“One of their missions is to put the best gun and the best ammo into our hands,” said Maj. Michael Anti, a 2004 Olympic silver medalist. “Their other mission is to put that same quality of weapon system into the (hands of) soldiers so they can survive on the battlefield.”

During our visit to Ft. Benning, Hancock invited us out to the firing range for a skeet shooting demonstration. Click on the video to watch this Olympic soldier in action.

Not just the Army… and not just the Olympics. The US Military as a whole has a history of excellent competitive marksmen.

As the daughter of a member of the early USAF pistol team it’s nice to see competitive shooters getting some recognition.

A little USAF pistol team history.

I am proud to have such a marksman represent the US, rrnak doesn’t matter. If it did we would only seend high rankings into combat areas. Keep the gold coming to the US.

Comment by David

As a retired U.S. Marine my hat is off to you gentlemen, Outstanding job!!! It just goes to show you no matter where you look in the military you can find a gold mine of skills and talents

As far as the PFC remark below, Yes this young man deserves a promotion but there is nothing wrong with being a PFC, he is a member of a team and no matter who you are, you have to start somewhere on a team. Next time you see a member of the armed force remember they represent our country 24/7 and making life and death decision at the tender rank of PFC.

David,

The Marines had one of the best, as far as I’m concerned. Bill McMillan was an incredible shooter and a class act all the way around. It was an honor to have known him.

Good Shooting!!!
God bless your skills and we the citizens of this great Country are behind you.
This page just goes to show that th majority of the American Citizens are patriots, we just are not big mouths like the anti-Americans, time we stood up, before we have to shoot at someone instead of just a target to keep our rights in our own country.

This is why I like Foxnews. Thanks for doing a story on shooting sports. I was on the national development team when i was a wee-one and have trained at Ft. Benning. Its a great facility. This makes me want to get back into the sport! Congrats to all the US athletes! R. Wigger, Mary Lynn says hi!

TO Larry Bauer: Why would anyone be ashamed that a PFC is representing the United States of America at the Olympics? It should be more of a pride than anything to have such a young man, who is still new to the ranks to represent our country. RANK doesn’t make somebody, its the person’s character that makes them.

He would be a mentor, to ALOT of young airmen, soldiers, marines, and seamen who are just starting out their career.

I cannot believe your ignorance!! “Promote him” I think our Commander and Chief would have EVEN MORE PRIDE that someone as young as him is representing our country. Its even more proof that not all the young servicemembers are just as honorable as their predecessors.

Comment by FORREST TRACY

STILL WAITING. 30 RESPONSES AND NOTHING NEGATIVE YET. WHY IS IT THAT SO FAR THE RESPONSES SEEM TO BE FROM SUPPORTERS OF THE UNITED STATES AND IT’S MILITARY?

Comment by platteman

Thank God for the Army. They did a great job and all the service men and women do a great job.

It is a shame that the men’s and woman’s relay team didn’t have the Army dispaline in their training. They would have won.

I go to bed each night Thanking God for our men and women of the Armed Services.

I don’t want much of the Olimpics because I hate NBC. At least Fox News covers the real stories of the games.

Well done, Troop! Congrats on a fine display of marksmanship and for representing the US as a true champion!!

The USAMU is a fantastic group of individuals that are certainly the best of the best when it comes to any facet of marksmanship. Bravo to all of the USAMU shooters and the men/women (the unsung heroes) that support them within the USAMU!!

The reason for the lack of negative comments is that Fox is the ONLY outlet for facts. Hey, should be called FACTS news channel. Plus, my daughter as the new battalion commander of JROTC at Morehead High School in Eden, N.C., finished 2nd to another young lady at this summer’s regional JROTC camp AND has been told she has a ROTC scholarship waiting for her. All she has to do is get accepted to a college and that won’t be a problem. Sorry for the gloating. GO team USA and go U.S. military. Thanks for ALL you do!!!!

I was a competitive shooter 30+ years ago and one of my shooting partners was the former (retired) AMU director. He had a crewcut and was nearly deaf (they didn’t use adequate noise protection in the 1960s) and I had hair down to my shoulders. We became friends as we looked past each other’s differences and focused on our common love of the sport. He was always kind and a true gentleman. My landlord at the time was the famed Roy F. Dunlap who was a champion marksman, built numerous parts and weapons for AMU competitive shooters, and helped train their gunsmiths in the 1960s. Through Roy I met an AMU Olympic gold medal winner and another who was a world champion. It was my honor to have met these men. This is a very honored group, first and foremost for the shooting skills they pass on to the armed forces, but also as elite, world-class atheletes. Bravo to the AMU.

Everyone,

Please slam the missing brain guy who does not care or has no respect for us enlisted persons who do our duty for the best country in the world. Or do you want to debate this fact also! Not trying to be brash with anyone, but as a disabled veteran from the Air Force and working for the Army now,
this is a slam to great skilled people who come into the service to serve. The arrogant nut who lacks knowledge of the the USA military system is lacking information because you are A. arogant and thus a loser by my standards or b. Are an person who thinks enlisted low ranking people can’t do squat= loser again. Pleople are raised in great areas of this country if you think the PFC is a loser for winning the GOLD Fu Med, you stink. God Bless him and the USA.
LOVE AMERICA and RESPECT THE PEOPLE OR GO LIVE SOME WHERE ELSE. Be glad to send your butt a bus bus ticket to south of the border for you to continue your way furthe past our great friends south to a boat to whereever. Let me and by Disabled American Veteran brothers know when to pick you up, I’ll drive your **s across the DelRio bridge to the taxi stand for furthe riddence.

Congrats to the Olympian!

Makes me smile to see the USA produce such shooters.

I wonder what loads he is using. He hardly seems to get any recoil at all and I know that is the point of why he is shooting the loads he has.

Wish my turkey loads were as nice to me.

I had wondered what had happened to the shooting sports at this years Olympics. Maybe I have just missed them on the NBC coverage or maybe NBC just doesn’t want to show anything that has to do with guns (in a good way). Thanks FOX for bringing us some Shooting Sports news. By the way, FOX is the ONLY news I watch and the last one I would ever watch would be NBC, if I HAD to watch something else. At least I can feel that FOX is honest and doesn’t slant their NEWS to match their personal beliefs. I WILL have to admit that NBC has done a better job of covering the Olympics this year than they have in the past. Of course, the previous years of coverage have been terrible at times.

I don’t know what being a PFC or any othe rank for that matter, has to do with how straight you shoot. And I sure don’t know why LARRY BAUER “WOULD BE ASHAMED TO HAVE A PFC REPESENTING THE US OF A.” I personally don’t know of any rank more worthy to represent the USA.

I don’t know if FORREST TRACY is trying to stir something up and thinks that’s fun or is just stupid and has nothing alse to say.

what a shame it is that tim gross is enjoying the freedoms men like the members of AMU die to protect so that he may belittle them with veiled insult.

I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.

“Ready on the right, ready on the left, ready on the firing line”. It still rings in my ears. I can feel that old M1 smacking into my shoulder. Way to go son. Way to go Army.

Go USA!!! Another proud veteran here– so happy and honored one of our young men has risen to the occasion. Just like they normally do 24/7 under no fanfare. But this type of success is special. A rallying point for all Americans- from old men once on the guard to those looking for strength, and also for young boys needing a real hero.

Please lighten up on the person who felt America should have higher ranking people do the work… that person doesn’t understand the commitment a soldier makes. Shaming them will only alienate– send that guy some links to valiant soldiers such as Alvin York and John Levitow. Here’s one for starters:

I know Vinny and he is a great credit to the USA and the Army. NBC did cover his accomplishment and I would suggest you visit their website and watch the final and the shoot off mentioned. Also the medal ceremony where they played my favorite song for Vinny…. you know the one by Mr Key…. The Star Spangle Banner.

We have had great coverage this year and now need to keep it going, with many new bunkers poping up it would be super to get the USAMU shooters out for clincs and instrutions to new shooters. Shooting sports need to be shown as to how safe gun handling is when properly trained, also how much fun it is.

C.R Your right about Bill McMillan. I met Mr McMillan while shooting Western Divisional match’s. He was on the relay before mine and after seeing him shoot I ask for some pointer, he gave them to me like a friend would, he was never condescending or belittling while he spoke to me. Never once did he mention his Olympic experience or Gold Medal a true sportsman who didn’t need to brag. Later a member of the Marine Corps shooting team told me who he was and his story. He left a lasting impression.

David,

Yup, that was Bill McMillan. We knew many of the really outstanding shooters of that time, some as talented as “McMillan” but none were more helpful or modest. He was always just a regular kind of guy.

Do you ever wonder if the “McMillan Tilt/McMillan Rotation” could be at the root of TV actors turning a handgun sideways to shoot? I get a kick out of it every time.

Thank’s, to all responsible for airing a shooting event on TV. All you ever see on TV is the negetive of shooting through deaths and violence. There are millions of responsible sportsmen like myself that would love to see more shooting sports on TV. Fox will always be on my list to watch more often.
Thank’s Again
