From Morgan City to Houma

I have taken this trip before in so many ways. The trip to see the wake of a hurricane that has just torn through neighborhoods, towns and fields.

The exact same trip down Highway 90 that heads south and then east from Lafayette through Morgan City, then into Houma and eventually onto New Orleans. My first hurricane back in 2002 had us in New Iberia, also along 90, where Lili seemed poised to flatten central Louisiana. While it did do some serious damage, like Gustav, it got to the coast and fell apart, but not before ruining the lives of many people. We also travelled 90 for Hurricane Katrina and a few weeks later surveying the damage from Rita.

I have dubbed 90, the hurricane highway for obvious reasons. A sad moniker since the highway runs through the heart of Cajun country. Across swamplands, bayou’s, fields of sugarcane, the road gives the traveller a view into the life of shrimping, crawdads and even gators. Unfortunately, we don’t get the chance to enjoy what might be seen most other days of the year, we instead see what now needs to be fixed, destroyed by the force of mother nature. The people however don’t seem to change.

Sure we meet people who are disappointed, hurt, upset at their luck, but in the end they endure. The people of the bayou are welcoming, more friendly than most and absolutely dedicated to staying and rebuilding.

As I sit here along the main road into Houma, I see all sorts of airboats towed by trucks, emergency and repair vehicles and Louisiana National Guard humvee’s. The soldiers have been a mainstay in these parts since Wednesday. In Morgan City and 32 miles east in Houma, they have monitored and followed the storm since last Wednesday. They now guard every exit off of the highway and also help patrol the streets. Many people evacuated from this region and they need to feel safe in knowing their homes are being watched and protected. If people return to homes that escaped the storm and any possible looting, they will be more likely to trust in knowing they can leave again…hopefully that wont be for some time.

Brad, I would bet Adam knows the headlines, since it is his business to know them. Although that is just my guess.

Adam-

Did you happen to hear about Google’ s new Web browser, called Chrome? I read about it in an article. It presents a sleek appearance, groups pages into easy-to-manage “tabs” and offers several ways for people to control their Internet privacy settings.

Maybe you can talk about it in another Tech Tuesday blog.

Take Care.

My brother lives in Houma. Has lived there since the late sixties. His family left once (the early years) in all those years. His family rides out hurricanes there. I have stuck in California since the seventies. I get earthquakes. However, he gets more hurricanes than I get earthquakes.

Adam-

What did you think about Sarah Palin’s speech? She was awesome, a truly star stunning performance.

I also enjoyed Linda Lingle’s speech about a hour earlier, she is the Gov. of Hawaii. She could consider running for President in the near future.

Glad you’re back home. Hopefully you’ll be home for a while and can blog more ;)
Having all that security there definately helped. Bobby Jindal did a great job planning an evacuation plan. I think he must have drawn it up the first week he was in power there.

Hey Max-

What did you think about Sarah Palin speech yesterday and John McCain’s tonight? All i can say is exceptional :)

And it looks like FNC topped the ratings all this week, especially with the RNC convention and non stop hurricane coverage during the weekend.

Bobby Jindal is a great up and coming conservative, He will make a great Presidential candidate in the near future.

Take Care.

Hey Mary-

I think that being in earthquakes is a whole lot scarier than a hurricane. I personally havent experienced any of the two, but that is my feeling.

Brad: They were both great speeches. Did you see about their speeches both getting more viewers than Obama’s? Hopefully it converted some more people.

Jindal is great. He’s young, only 37, so he has plenty of time, the when really depends on who wins this year.

I loved the hurricain coverage, it was very well done.

Comment by Adam Housley

Max and everyone…thanks for the thoughts as always!

I am now back. I know, I disappear for a few days, but these stories take a toll and time for travel. Just now catching up and it is Saturday! I am working on a couple of interesting stories, including McCain’s chances in California and the hunt for a serial killer here in Los Angeles. Of course, I am watching hurricane Ike and Jen G. is already on her way to Florida. It looks like our Florida Bureau will handle the the storm as it passes the tip of Florida, then the rest of us are available depending on where the storm heads next.

Hey Max-

What is really amazing is the way the liberal media is attacking Sarah Palin. They obviously cant attack her on the issues, so they have to resort to this nasty, mean spirited rubbish, questioning whether she is even qualified to do her job correctly.

I think a lot of it is sexist, but mostly is because she is a conservative. And i am sure you have heard the attacks on her youngest child, who has special needs, and even questioning if her so called neglect caused it? Its really disgusting.

Hey Max-

I read about the GOP speeches breaking tv records in some article, but i didnt bother to post about it. According to reports, Fox News Channel was again the most-watched cable news network during August, winning for the 80th consecutive month. What an accomplishment for them. I credit Adams fearless reporting for it :)

Take Care.

Hey Adam-

I am definately looking forward to your upcoming reports. I really want to hear about McCain chances in California, i hope he can gather a ton of votes there, epsecially with the majority of celebs rooting for the liberal BHO.

Greta did a great story on Sarah Palin. She sure is helping McCain. I know people here who had not planned on voting and will do so now because of her.

Great spot and coverage this morning with Jon Scott regarding McCain and California. First time I got to hear you talk about politics. I know you have to be “fair and balanced” and cannot offer your personal opinion – BUT I personally hope McCain/Palin wipes up California.
